Does Donald Trump Still Think Climate Change Is a Hoax? No One Can Say

By PETER BAKER

No one working for President Trump who was sent out to explain his decision on the Paris accords knows or would say if he believes in climate change.

Subject: Betsy DeVos, Trump Climate Change Expert

Betsy DeVos, Michigan's longtime anti-public school crusader and America's current unqualified Secretary of Education, is now apparently Trump's unofficial climate change expert.

On Thursday, she issued a statement in support of his incomprehensible decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

But, yesterday, when asked about her thoughts on climate change, DeVos responded, "Certainly the climate changes" but "I don't have an answer" on how to fix it.

Huh? Maybe by not pulling out of an historic international agreement to stop climate change?

It's bad enough she's running the Department of Education (into the ground), but now she's weighing in on environmental policy, another area she clearly knows nothing about.

We're fighting back with the facts, but we need your help to step it up and keep it up. Can you chip in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, or whatever you can afford right now?

President Trump has announced that America will abandon its allies and back out of the most groundbreaking international climate agreement in history. This move puts America last, and will have disastrous consequences for our country.

It undermines our place on the world stage, puts the health of Americans at risk as we breathe dirtier air, and jeopardizes homegrown manufacturing jobs spurred by the clean energy economy in parts of our country left behind by globalization—all while dialing up the disastrous ramifications of climate change.

With a presidential administration that's gambling with our future, we need Congress to stop hiding in the back seat and step up to fulfill their responsibilities.

Take action with EDF today, and tell your elected officials that it's time to act on climate.

While we shirk our duties as one of the world's largest emitters, the rest of the world is stepping up. China, the EU, and Canada are now poised to lead the world on climate action—while we fall behind.

And we know there can be momentum on this in Congress—when we fight for it. The first vote that the Trump Administration lost in either Chamber of Congress was a Senate vote attempting to roll back limits on climate pollution, thanks largely to the tireless work of EDF supporters who sent over 100,000 messages and drove 3,000 calls to Senate offices.

Now, it's time to work to ensure Congress doesn't just block attacks—but moves us forward. Because we know we can't count on the President to do the same.

Take action today, and tell Congress: It's time to put America first and take the climate crisis seriously—before it's too late.

Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam praises LeBron James at NAACP dinner

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said Saturday night that Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James showed "class and dignity" in how he has responded to his home being  vandalized with racist graffiti on the eve of the NBA Finals.

Haslam made the remarks at the beginning of a speech at the Cleveland Chapter of the NAACP's Freedom Fund Dinner at the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel. The NAACP honored Haslam for making the front office of the Cleveland Browns among the most diverse in the National Football League.

Earlier in evening, NAACP President Michael Nelson also praised James for his response to the racist slur directed at him, noting that it is another reminder of need to continue to work for civil rights.

James has been widely praised for his comments.

"No matter how much money you have, no matter how famous you are, no matter how many people admire you, being black in America is -- it's tough, " James said Wednesday. "And we got a long way to go for us as a society and for us as African-Americans until we feel equal in America."

Haslam briefly talked about the Browns before making his formal remarks, promising to continue to do everything he can to field a winning team. He then joked that "we are minorities in the front office," referring to his wife and Browns co-owner Dee Haslam. The remark won laughter and applause.

Haslam said he wasn't deserving but considered the recognition a great honor. He said he wants the same level of diversity of the Browns to spill over to his family business, Pilot Flying J, where he said there is more to do.

He said he grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is "as white as you can get." He said working in the NFL was his "first experience with diversity."

He received wide applause and a partial standing ovation at the conclusion of his remarks.

He was one of several Cleveland leaders honored Saturday night at the fundraiser. Other honorees included Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Ronald B. Adrine.  Actor and author Hill Harper gave the keynote address.

Saturday's event marked the return of the once annual NAACP dinner, which was cancelled in recent years as the NAACP tried to rebuild its organization. The event drew hundreds of people, many of them corporate leaders, elected officials and non-profit leaders.

Several Cleveland mayoral candidates attended, including Cleveland Council members Jeffrey Johnson and Zack Reed, Brandon Chrostowski, president and CEO of the nonprofit Edwins Leadership and Restaurant Institute, and Tony Madalone, founder and owner of Fresh Brewed Tees, who only recently announced his intent to run for mayor. He was seated next to his friend and former Cleveland Browns player Josh Cribbs. (Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson was not spotted at the event.)
