Soliciting for Speakers at Ohio Mathematics Contest (OMC)

The annual Ohio Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Sinclair Community College

During the time when students take the test
s from 2:00 pm, their parents are free until students finish their exams (at 3:00 pm for grades 4 through 8, and at 3:30 pm for grades 9 through 11). And then, students and parents will wait --- for the period when we score students' answers, record their scores and determine winners --- until the Award Ceremony which will begin at 5:00 pm.

As you may be aware of, the Mathematical skills form a backbone knowledge on pursuing careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM). The purpose of the OMC is to stimulate interests in mathematics among upper elementary, middle and high school students and to recognize those who exhibit exceptional talents in Mathematical skills. To enrich these students of highly talented in Mathematics, as well as to enlightening their parents' knowledge and interests, we have been offering seminars, workshops and/or demonstrations related to the STEM fields.

To this end, we need highly motivated persons to give:

2.     a few presentations to lower-grade (possibly to upper-grade) students

3.     a few presentations to upper-grade (possibly to lower-grade) students.

As far as concerning
contents, you may choose any topic to promote parents' knowledges and interests to guide their children to go into STEM fields and promote students' enthusiasm in learning Mathematics. The time duration would be in 20, 30, 45 and 50 minutes depending on your preparations. If you are interested in, please contact me at Munsup.seoh@wright.edu

We also need
your help with these tasks: (1) Greet and check-in students before the test (12:30 pm– 1:50 pm), (2) Proctor exams and grade papers (1:30 pm -4:30 pm) and (3) Help Award Ceremony (5:00 pm – 6:00pm). We still need a few more volunteers. Please let me (mseoh@siscom.net) know with your choice of task to help us.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Letter from the Director

Karl ColónDear Greene County Public Library Friends and Family,

The holidays have passed, but the season of giving continues here at Greene County Public Library. We are excited to bring our most popular and successful programs to you again this year, as well as the very best in books, movies, and music. Many of our programs this time of year focus on giving back.

It's tax time, and once again the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be in the Xenia Library from January to April helping community members to prepare their taxes. This award winning service has become an important part of helping people claim their returns.

February 11 to 17 will be Food for Fines Week! For every canned good a patron donates, one dollar will be deducted from their fines. Last year, this program brought in over 2,200 canned goods. The non-perishable food items are donated to each community's local food pantry. This year we are adding a pay-it-forward component to Food for Fines, so we can all do more together to fight hunger!

Speaking of giving back to our community, the Xenia Community Library is hosting a series of events during their Random Acts of Kindness Week. Each event focuses on giving back to a part of our community—Children's Hospital, Greenwood Manor Nursing Home, and the Family Violence Prevention Center. Check out the program calendar for more information.

Thank you for being the best friends a library could ask for.

Karl Colón, Director

Black Authors of Ohio

Ohio is not just the cradle of the presidents, but also the birthplace and home to many beloved African American writers. Ohio's black authors can boast many literary prizes, spanning from poetry awards to Nobels to Newberys. You'll also notice most of the writers are women. In celebration of Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March, here are a few of Ohio's most revered writers:

She was recently named the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for the Library of Congress. Woodson continues to be active in the writing community and loves to promote the work of public libraries.

Virginia Hamilton
, a local children's author, was awarded the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, and many more. The farmlands of southwestern Ohio had been home to Hamilton's family since the late 1850s, when her grandfather came to Ohio as an infant via the Underground Railroad. In 1969, Virginia and her husband and fellow writer, Arnold Adoff, built their "dream home" in Yellow Springs. The Greene County Public Library honors Virginia's legacy with a dedicated area inside Yellow Springs Community Library. Along the street outside is an historical marker noting her connection to the community.

In 1987 she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Six years later, Dove was named US Poet Laureate. At forty years old, she was the youngest poet ever elected to the position.

Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Morrison is one of the most prestigious writers to hail from the Buckeye State having been awarded the Pulitzer, Nobel, and several other literary honors. Paul Laurence Dunbar, the son of two former slaves, was born in Dayton, Ohio. He was taught to read by his mother, Matilda Murphy Dunbar. Dunbar published eleven volumes of poetry. Wright State University honors Dunbar by naming their library after him. You can tour Paul Laurence Dunbar's house in Dayton where you can see his personal treasures, including a bicycle given to him by the Wright brothers.

Tax Help

Greene County Public Library is once again coordinating with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) personnel to offer free tax assistance to area residents. Since first partnering with the library in 1986, VITA has helped area residents claim millions of dollars in tax returns. Xenia Head Librarian Melissa Fasanella is enthusiastic about the program. "Last year VITA assisted more than 2,700 people here at the Xenia Community Library. They were able to secure over three million dollars' worth of refunds and nearly one million dollars in earned income credit. That makes a big difference in our community and in peoples' lives."

VITA clients can expect assistance with most aspects of the tax filing and return process. Tax volunteers are trained in Federal, State [Ohio] and School District Income Tax Returns preparation, and can e-file all three returns for their clients. Clients can rest assured their returns are prepared in accordance with tax law and securely transmitted via computer. In some instances, people already have their taxes completed and only want someone to double-check them. Volunteers will be glad to assist those clients as well.

Xenia Community Library: VITA personnel will be at the library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, starting January 26 and continuing through April 16, 2018. First come, first served. Please line up at the east (parking lot side) entrance. The schedule is as follows:

Mondays: 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Wednesdays: 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Fridays: 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Beavercreek Community Library will also have a few VITA sessions on select days. Patrons must schedule an appointment for a VITA session at Beavercreek. You may stop by or call the Beavercreek Reference desk at (937) 352-4001, option 3, to make an appointment. Registration begins on February 3 at 10 a.m.
Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 25, 1 - 5 p.m.
Saturday, Mar. 3, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

You must have the following documents to receive VITA assistance:

Food for Fines

From February 11-17, patrons with existing fines will receive $1 credit toward their fines for each canned good they donate. Credit will not be applied toward fees for lost or damaged items. If you're fine-free, you can still contribute to area food banks. Pay it forward by dropping off canned goods at the circulation desk. Librarians will put the overflow canned goods on display, which other library patrons may use to pay down their fines.

Online Book Club

The Online Book Club meets exclusively online. On the first of each month, we unveil a new book. On Mondays, we post blogs with videos, pictures, and questions to enhance your reading experience.

Upcoming Titles:

February: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty   &    March: The Underdogs by Melissa Fay Greene
