There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

Petitioning Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
Take Responsibility for Wartime Crimes of
Sexual Slavery and Human Trafficking:
Remember the "Comfort Women"

Sign the petition

Prior to and during World War II, Japan's Imperial Army established a system of brothels in its zones of combat specifically designed for military use, called "comfort stations." Women and girls as young as 13 years old were enticed, kidnapped or coerced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military and its designated agents. Historians estimate that as many as 200,000 women and girls throughout Asia and the Pacific, the majority from Korea, were trafficked into government-sponsored military brothels. These women and girls are euphemistically known as "comfort women."

While other instances of wartime sexual slavery have occurred throughout history and still do today, post-war Japan continues to have difficulty admitting to Imperial Japan's role in what is deemed the most extensive case of government involvement in human trafficking. In 1993 Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yohei Kono, issued a statement, (the Kono Statement) recognizing that "the Japanese military was, directly or indirectly, involved in the establishment and management of the 'comfort stations' and the transfer of 'comfort women'." However, the Kono statement is perceived only as a partial apology because (1) it was not issued by the Prime Minister in his official capacity, (2) it did not fully recognize the magnitude of the crime, and (3) it offered no government reparations to survivors and families of "comfort women."

Today, the Japanese government is in the process of erasing this chapter of its wartime history. Despite corroboration and verification from historians and the international community, including the United Nations, that Imperial Japan engaged in systematic, government-sanctioned human trafficking for the purposes of sexual servitude, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is intensifying efforts to whitewash the history of "comfort women." Abe and his political party are leading a campaign to revise textbooks in Japan and around the world to delete or dilute the sections on "comfort women." Abe's administration is also pressuring Japanese newspapers to retract their articles covering the subject and calling on foreign governments to remove references from official documents, as well as to destroy any memorials dedicated to the "comfort women."

Members of Prime Minister Abe's ruling party have reportedly stated that acknowledging atrocities committed during WWII, particularly sexual slavery, would diminish Japan's honor and national pride. The government of Japan must take the opposite position. Honor is bestowed upon governments that recognize their role in perpetuating human rights violations and in fulfilling their responsibilities as members of the international community to work toward truth, democracy and equality for all.

Today, there are fewer than fifty "comfort women" survivors, well into their eighties and nineties. They are still fighting for an official and unequivocal apology from the Japanese government. We must join them to ensure that the world will never forget the women and girls trafficked, raped, physically and emotionally abused, and maintained in an institutionalized system of sexual slavery by Imperial Japan. Justice must be served.

Please sign this petition urging Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Japanese Government to:

Immediately end any efforts to revise, remove, or request the removal of references to the history of the "comfort women" in Japanese and foreign textbooks, newspapers, historical records, and official United Nations and other government documents

Officially affirm that Japan's Imperial Army was engaged in systematic human trafficking for the sexual enslavement of women and girls in WWII military "comfort stations" and call for prosecution of the perpetrators.

Affirmatively and unequivocally apologize to the survivors and the bereaved families and accept historical responsibility for this institutionalized sexual slavery.

Subject: Close the loophole that could cost up to $17 billion in retirement savings each year

Hey, we;ve worked hard to earn our retirement nest eggs. I know I'm counting on it to be there for me when I retire, and I bet you are too. But did you know that a dangerous loophole makes it easy for financial advisers -- the people who are supposed to be protecting and growing our money -- to recommend costly funds and riskier investments that line their pockets instead? This loophole is estimated to cost hard-working Americans up to $17 billion in retirement savings each year.

That's crazy.

The U.S. Department of Labor is considering a new standard that would hold financial professionals genuinely accountable for helping you chose the best investment for you and your family. But Wall Street special interests and their allies in Congress are already trying to stop it. I just took action to end this loophole and protect my retirement savings -- will you join me?

Thanks and pass it on!

Subject: Huge Obama/Warren announcement

On Monday, President Obama—with Senator Elizabeth Warren by his side—made a huge announcement: He called upon the Department of Labor to take steps that would protect millions of Americans by requiring financial advisers to act in the best interest of their clients. Will you sign the petition to make sure Congress doesn't stand in the way of this bold proposal?

I had the honor of representing millions of MoveOn members as President Obama spoke about this proposal. But we know that Wall Street, and its allies in Congress, will fight this tooth and nail. It's going to be a huge fight, but with President Obama, Sen. Warren, the AARP, and other organizations that push for financial reform backing this effort with us, we can win.

That's why we launched a petition to Congress, which says:

Help protect Americans' retirement security by supporting new rules that would require financial advisers to act in the interest of their customers rather than for their own financial gain.

Join the president's call to the Department of Labor to issue these rules, and don't let congressional action undermine this commonsense effort.

Sign the petition

Every single year, an estimated $17 billion is transferred from Main Street retirement accounts into Wall Street's coffers—because brokers and financial advisers are allowed to steer investors into unethical investments that aren't in their own best interest.1

But the new rule proposed by President Obama—and championed by Sen. Warren—could change that.

As the White House explains:

A 1 percentage point lower return could reduce your savings by more than a quarter over 35 years. In other words, instead of a $10,000 retirement investment growing to more than $38,000 over that period after adjusting for inflation, it would be just over $27,500.2

And for a young person just starting out today and saving consistently—the numbers are staggering: A worker who saves $5,000 a year for 40 years could end up with over $224,000 more if Obama's new rule is implemented!3

There's reason to worry that Republicans in Congress will side with their Wall Street pals and try to undo this work. They could try to pass laws preventing the Department of Labor from issuing such rules, or could threaten the agency's funding to enforce these rules.

We need to make sure members of Congress hear from us: These rules make sense. Don't mess with them. Side with Main Street over Wall Street.

Sign this petition now.

These types of rules sometimes fly under the radar. By signing and sharing this petition, we can make sure this important move gets the attention it deserves—and puts Congress on notice that we're paying attention.

3.    According to the White House fact sheet, the average loss for investors who receive investment advice with conflicts of interest is 1% per year. If a worker deposits $5,000 each year for 40 years into a retirement account and never withdraws anything, the worker would retire with $773,809 at a 6% rate of return with conflicts of interest. But the worker would receive $998,176 with a 7% return without conflicts of interest. The 1% per year difference compounds to $224,367 over 40 years.

Subject: Victory over vouchers in Congress! THANK YOU.

We did it. YOU did it!  Because of the calls and emails that poured into Congress from thousands of activists like you, from all around the country, NO voucher amendment came to the floor this week!  This is a great grassroots victory against an attack that would undermine public education and allow taxpayer dollars to be used to fund religion. THANK YOU for helping to make it happen.

2/25/15

Tell Congress: Stand Up for Public Education; Say NO to Vouchers!

speak out

Call your U.S. representative now.

Rep. Michael R. Turner (202) 225-6465

Please call your U.S. representative to oppose sending public dollars to private schools!

Private school vouchers are an education privatization scheme. They undermine public education by diverting much-needed resources from public schools, they often go to religious schools (meaning your tax dollars get used to fund religion) and, according to years of studies, they don't even work at improving educational outcomes!

This week, the House will debate the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and we expect a proposed amendment that would allow states to send critical federal dollars designated for public schools to private schools.

Please take a moment to pick up the phone and call now tell your representative to oppose any amendments that would create private school vouchers.

The funds in question, known as Title I funds, were designed to enable public schools to address achievement gaps between low-income and high-income students, and to ameliorate the differences in state and local funding by sending additional federal resources to communities with concentrations of low-income students.

The amendment we expect would provide states the option of making Title I funding "portable" by allowing the money to follow a child to a private school.

Please call your rep now and ask others to do the same.

If for some reason your member of Congress did not appear above, call the Capitol Switchboard to be connected 202-224-3121.

Thank you for standing up for strong public education the American Way.

One Human Family Workshops' "Unity in Diversity" experience which takes place the weekend of 3/27 – 3/29, at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 W. First Street, and adds to the bi-monthly Dialogue Series.  This time the Friday evening (6:00pm), Saturday all-day (9:00am – 6:00pm), and Sunday afternoon (3:00pm) segments are both independent of, and interconnected with, each other. [Refreshments will be served at each]

OHF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the eradication of racism and the creation of a multi-faith, multi-cultural, multi-generational community promoting the idea of unity in diversity through the extensive use of the arts, particularly through the use of gospel music, as well as the frank and honest dialogue which stems from an appreciation for what the lyrics come to mean to each of the participants in our various workshop settings.

This unique combination fosters greater freedom of expression and understanding far beyond current levels and aspects of other types of discussion workshops.  Unless and until there is a close association among all the members of the human family, no amount of rhetoric about unity can be taken seriously.

At OHF we feel that any "differences" seen between members of our human family only enhance the beauty and function of the whole.  Through fellowship and the greater appreciation for the concept of the oneness of humanity stemming for this workshop setting, barriers are broken down, myths are dispelled, and untruths begin to dissolve.                    The workshop is intended to jump start new Race Unity initiatives as well as to reinvigorate those that have been in existence and are looking for a new way to approach the issues and concerns that have brought them together in the first place.
