My Mother Kept A Garden
My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life it's start.
She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem…
And when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enough-
But not too much because she knew
I'd need to stand up strong and tough.
Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong-
Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.
I am my Mother's garden.
I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me

Subject: Stand with moms

Being a mom isn't just the most important job I have -- it's also a huge part of why I'm a Democrat. I'm so proud to support my colleagues who are fighting day in and day out so that moms and their kids have access to affordable health care, a quality education, equal pay, and paid leave to care for their family. The list really goes on and on.

But the guys on the other side of the aisle -- some of whom think they should be our next president -- have other ideas about women and families, and, frankly, those ideas are pretty bad. They're pushing back against equal pay and paid leave protections tooth and nail, finding new ways almost every day to undermine Obamacare, doing whatever they can to take women's medical decisions out of their hands, and threatening to eliminate the Department of Education entirely. As we gear up for 2016, I think we're clear on one thing: If we want to make things better for mothers and their families, we've got to keep the White House and we've got to put everything we have into taking back Congress.

So if you're in to stand with moms all over the country, and the people who will fight for them and their kids, then add your name and commit to electing Democrats in 2016 who will do just that:

We can't let our opponents have their way on these issues. We can't afford to let them set us back decades. So thanks for showing them we're committed to moving this country forward.

Who taught you to fight for a better world?

I know my answer because I come from a long line of remarkable women.

My grandmother got a PhD in Mathematics in 1938, and managed to balance a career, public service, and being a mother throughout her life. My mom, following my grandmother's lead, is still actively involved in causes from public education to the ACLU. And my older daughter made me pretty proud when at the age of 7 she wrote an essay for school about what she'd seen with her own eyes when we lived in Israel:

"Palestinians are trapped inside a big wall and they can only be in the inside. They most certainly can't cross to the other side and go to Israel, but Israelis can go to Palestine whenever they want to. It's actually not fair."

At JVP, we're inspired by the generations of women who came before us, and motivated by the generations who'll come after us.  L'dor vador - from generation to generation - we'll stand side by side with every woman, every mother -- every person -- who fights for peace and justice.

Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday. This year I'm going to make a gift to JVP in my mom's honor.
Will you join me in doing the same in honor of your mother - or any mother who taught you to stand up for what's right?

Mother's Day Card from JVP

We'll send her this e-card (so you don't even have to worry about flowers).

Mother's Day isn't just about my mom, or yours. It's about every mother, and the remarkable -- and too often forgotten -- contributions mothers have made to every struggle for peace and justice. This mother's day, we honor mothers who have, since the beginning of time, stood on the front lines of change-- in the US, in Israel, in Palestine, and around the world.

Happy Mother's Day.

P.S. Stand with every mother in Israel and Palestine fighting for justice. Make a tax-deductible donation to Jewish Voice for Peace in honor of Mother's Day.

PFAW was founded to fight the Radical Right. If it seems these days that we use the same language to talk about most Republicans, it's not because we've simply become more partisan -- it's because most Republicans now are "card carrying members" of the Radical Right. That's not hyperbole -- it's nothing but the truth.

If you haven't done so already, I hope you'll check out PFAW's Right Wing Watch In Focus report on the 2016 field of GOP presidential candidates, for a glimpse at how strikingly similar -- and extreme -- the candidates' agendas are.

Right Wing Watch is arguably the number one source for in-depth reporting on America's Radical Right movement. Whether it's politicians, influential preachers, pundits, or activist leaders, by capturing right-wing figures in their own words, our reporting exposes that what they say among themselves and to their followers (who make up the Republicans' activist and voter base) is often very different, and much more extreme, than what they say to the mainstream press.

And boy do we get their attention! And as our stories get picked up more and more by popular mainstream news outlets, they're even less and less pleased.

Just last week, the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins lashed out at Right Wing Watch on his blog after he was confronted by host Bob Schieffer on CBS's Sunday morning show Face the Nation with a statement he had agreed with, per Right Wing Watch's reporting -- that impeachment would be an appropriate response to Supreme Court justices ruling in favor of marriage equality.

Perkins lamented that "mainstream networks like CBS, Politico, and others" would "rely on RightWingWatch's propaganda." Of course, what we publish is not propaganda, it's the Right in their own words … no matter how badly they wish they could walk those words back when they become inconvenient.

Thank you for your continued support and for standing with PFAW to help expose and counter the Radical Right.

The Personhood Movement: Where It Comes from and What It Means for the Future of Choice

"Even though anti-choice and pro-personhood groups are often at odds over their strategies, it's unquestionable they are united by the same end goal: criminalizing abortion. By pushing a relentlessly uncompromising attack on reproductive health, the personhood movement has given cover and support to other anti-choice groups focused on gradually chipping away at choice. Ultimately, the efforts of personhood and anti-choice groups alike amount to a slow erosion of abortion access -- and a dangerous attack on women's health."

--Miranda Blue, Senior Researcher, PFAW Foundation

A new report from PFAW Foundation details:

  • The origins and key players of the far-right Personhood Alliance and Personhood USA
  • Battles over personhood within the broader anti-choice movement
  • How the personhood movement contributes to the push for state and national legislation that restricts abortion access
  • The extreme goals that animate both personhood groups and their rivals within the anti-choice movement
