Subject: Ombudsman Office Weekly Update

(On
4-15-2016)
Dear Members of the Board of Directors of the Ombudsman Office, Elected Officials and Colleagues:

This week your Ombudsman Office opened a dozen cases on Children's Services, Food Stamps, Medicaid, the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program, the Work Experience Program (for those receiving public assistance), County Water, the Federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and Social Security for residents of Dayton, Englewood, Kettering, Miamisburg, Riverside and Vandalia. An additional thirty households were given brief advice or assistance regarding Dayton Municipal Court, the ADAMHS Board, Food Stamps, Medicaid, the EITC, HUD, Medicare, Social Security, the Department of Labor, housing matters, legal issues, the Attorney General's office for consumer matters, and the State Medical Board. Those assisted live in Centerville, Dayton, Harrison Township, Kettering, Miamisburg, Riverside and West Carrollton.

This week our Long-term Care Ombudsmen opened cases in five facilities on the right to exercise choice, staff not following care plans, access to personal funds, cessation of therapy, poor staff attitudes, shortage of staff, failure to respond to requests, and accidental injury. We participated in the Department of Health surveys of 10 facilities by providing information about our verified complaints and the results of our advocacy visits. We spoke with a dozen individuals about their resident rights, visited 11 facilities, and advocated for residents in 4 discharge hearings.

The Ombudsman Program on DATV featured Bart Kinkaid from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office on the topic of "Protecting Seniors from Financial Exploitation and Scams." It can be viewed at www.datv.org.

This week is National Volunteer Week and we thanked our volunteers both individually by letter and collectively on facebook for the 966 hours of service in 2015 valued at $21,667.80!

Today several staff attended the CityLinks conference at University of Dayton. One highlight was that citizens have used Open Source code to produce a website www.lotlinker.com which can inform us immediately if a home and property are eligible for citizens to purchase and rehabilitate through the LotLink program. The citizens are a group called Code Dayton.
