Dayton Unit NAACP Statement
On The Nomination of Chief Judge Garland to the US Supreme Court
DAYTON, OHIO - MARCH 22, 2016 - The Dayton Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) President Derrick L. Foward today released the following statement in regards to President Barack Obama’s announcement of Chief Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit as his nominee to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court:
“President Obama’s nomination of Chief Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court unquestionably fulfills the President’s Constitutional duty to put forth a well-qualified nominee. Based on what has been shared publicly, Judge Garland brings an abundance of legal and judicial experience as a nominee to the nation’s highest court and we look forward to engaging in a thoughtful and thorough analysis of Judge Garland’s record. As the city’s oldest civil rights organization, the Dayton Unit NAACP expects nominees to the Supreme Court to possess not only first-class legal acumen, but also a sharp understanding of how the Court’s decisions impact the diversity of the people and communities across Montgomery County, and a demonstrated commitment to enforce our nation’s civil rights laws.”
“We appreciate the President’s timely action in putting forth a well-qualified nominee and expect the same swift action in the Senate confirmation process. We urge members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to put aside partisanship and obstructionism and fulfill their Constitutional duty. The Committee should give Judge Garland a fair and timely hearing, and the Senate should then give him an up or down vote.”
“As the second largest NAACP Unit in the State of Ohio, we urge our members and every citizens across Montgomery County to call their U.S. Senators, particularly those on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and demand they move forward expeditiously with a hearing on Judge Garland’s fitness to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Founded in 1915, the Dayton Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the city’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the Dayton Region and Montgomery County are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. Their core goals are to Inform, Educate and Empower the Citizenry as they pursue justice and equality for all Americans.

Subject: Peace Corridor News - Full Service Grocery Planned For Salem Avenue!
Worker Owned Full Service Grocery Cooperative
The Greater Dayton Union Cooperative Initiative, (GDUCI) is planning for a worker owned full service grocery cooperative. The grocery is planned for the lower Salem Avenue corridor between Grand Avenue and the Great Miami River.
To gauge initial consumer interest, GDUCI is asking community residents to indicate their current grocery shopping habits and whether they have an interest in a grocery in that general area. The survey will take about 10 minutes. The Business Research Group at the University of Dayton is conducting the survey for GDUCI. The results will be kept strictly confidential. At the end of the survey you will get a chance to indicate whether you have an interest in receiving further information about the planned grocery.
