OVER 30 CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS CONDEMN TRUMP'S CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION (CBP)
FOR PROPOSING INVASIVE SCREENING OF CHINESE TRAVELERS

Civil Rights Groups to Submit Comprehensive Letter to CBP Opposing Unjust Border Policy

(San Francisco, CA) -- Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice), alongside a diverse group of civil rights, civil liberties and community-based organizations, have signed on to a comprehensive letter to CBP condemning their proposal to collect social media identifiers from visitors from China. In light of Muslim Ban border policies that have been halted by federal judges and invasive screening practices that have discriminately targeted travelers from Muslim-majority countries and Muslim Americans, our organizations are alarmed that Trump's CBP now proposes to target visitors from China.

In February, CBP announced a policy proposal to collect social media identifier information from long term visa holders from China via its Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS).  Over 30 organizations have signed onto the letter opposing this proposal, representing a wide cross section of groups including Asian American and Pacific Islander, Muslim American, immigrant rights and civil rights and civil liberties organizations. These organizations believe this proposal would "lead to increased profiling based on race and national origin, erode internet freedom and individual privacy, and would ultimately be an ineffective use of CBP resources."

Civil rights and civil liberties organizations have consistently stood against such suspicionless social media information collection as a violation of privacy and contrary to our constitutional values. Collecting information about someone's online presence is highly invasive, and CBP has not outlined any protections to prevent misjudgment or misuse of visitors' information, which could have disastrous impact for travelers.

Advancing Justice stands against the wholesale targeting of people and believes this policy would exacerbate race, religion and national origin based profiling. People of Chinese and Asian origin have long faced exclusion, surveillance, and targeting by the U.S. government, and this policy would serve as yet another example. CBP's adoption of such a policy would only fan the flames of anti-China, and anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S., which is already on the rise. The bottom line is that racial or religious profiling has never been and will never be an effective national security tool.

This proposed policy is not yet final, and it is open to public comment until April 24. Now is the time community members can make their voices heard to try and block this proposal from becoming the rule. We urge community members to express opposition to this policy by submitting a comment directly to CBP, which they can do through Advancing Justice's targeted letter campaign that sends individuals' comments directly to CBP, or by following the instructions on the federal register website.

Read the full letter here.

Subject: Republicans are panicked, and here's why:

Last night in Georgia, Daily Kos-endorsed Democrat Jon Ossoff pulled an incredible 48 percent in the first round election for GA-06.

This isn't the sort of district that Republicans thought they'd have to worry about. A Democrat hasn't won here in decades. It was Newt Gingrich's home base in the 90s. Mitt Romney won here by 23 points in 2012, and Republican Rep. Tom Price—who resigned this seat to become Trump's secretary of Health and Human Services—also won by 23 points last fall, even as Trump limped along to a one-point win.

Ossoff's performance last night is an almost unbelievable 22-point turnaround for Democrats.

GOP hacks and "geniuses" like Donald Trump are trying to spin this as some sort of win for the GOP. But this is simply a disaster for them.

Worse still: Ossoff's stunning performance mirrors the surge in support that Democrat James Thompson saw last week in the Kansas special election for an even-more-conservative district. Thompson came up just short, but Ossoff is still in the game: A runoff election between Ossoff and the top GOP vote-getter, Karen Handel—who's most infamous for trying and failing to get the Susan G. Komen breast cancer charity to defund Planned Parenthood—is scheduled for June 20.

Can you chip in $5 to Democrat Jon Ossoff to help flip this seat from red to blue?

P.S. If you haven't already, be sure to check out Daily Kos Political Director David Nir's extensive recap of last night's election here.

P.P.S. After that, be sure to chip in $5 to put Ossoff over the top in the June runoff.

I stand with Jewish Voices for Peace and I hope you will also!  Thanks for all that you do.

From: Stefanie Fox; Deputy Director, Jewish Voice for Peace

It's a dystopic riddle for our times: what do you get when you bring US police, border agents, ICE officers, and FBI officials from the US together to learn with soldiers and cops in Israel?

The answers are deadly serious:

  • An apartheid army empowered as a global gold standard.
  • Police and soldiers shooting people in the streets with total impunity.
  • Massively expanded spying and surveillance programs holding entire communities captive.
  • Unprecedented levels of deportation and imprisonment separating families and destroying futures.
  • Physical and legal attacks on human rights defenders, gutting movements for justice.

Indeed, one of the most dangerous places where the regimes of Trump and Netanyahu converge are in exchange programs that bring together law enforcement and military personnel from both countries. Thousands of the highest ranking police officials and law enforcement executives across the country have participated in these exchange programs, which are primarily billed as opportunities for U.S. law enforcement to learn counterterrorism tactics from the Israeli military and police. In these programs, both sides exchange worst practices that promote and extend discriminatory, repressive, and violent policing and surveillance.

That's why we are launching a campaign to end this Deadly Exchange. Sign up here to bring the campaign to your community.

The sad truth is that the majority of these programs are run by Jewish organizations, including the neo-conservative Jewish Institute on National Security of America (JINSA), local trips led by Jewish federations, and a large program run by the Anti-Defamation League. All with the buy-in of local elected officials who send police on taxpayer time.

Civil rights organizations and Jewish communal institutions have no business participating in further endangering those in Trump's and Bibi's crosshairs by dispatching police, ICE and FBI agents to exchange tips with an occupying army. And cities— especially so-called progressive or sanctuary cities— must end their participation in these programs.

As a Jewish organization dedicated to safety and justice for all people, it's our duty to draw the line at these exchanges. Join us today.

We can't end this exchange, or uproot the deeper systems it exposes, without first educating ourselves and each other. We have a full curriculum ready-to-go, and we'll coach you on every step of the process through an online training. All you have to do is sign up and we'll walk you through the rest.

Sign up now to host a community teach-in.

There is so much going dangerously wrong these days, it's hard to know what to pay attention to. But in fact, all the threats we face are inextricably connected. And if we are going to fight back effectively, we have to recognize and address these connections.

The US and Israel are premier propagandists of the dangerous lie that violence against some communities will create security for others. This campaign is an opportunity to upend that deadly myth.
We know that real safety is created through joint struggles for justice. We build together by showing up to protect and defend one another. It is that exchange— not between police, but peoples' movements— that we must grow.

We're counting on you to take this campaign and make it your own. Let's do this together.

Net Neutrality Now

Grassroots activists won an epic victory two years ago when together we pushed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to pass strong net neutrality rules. Hundreds of thousands of CREDO members and millions of others fought for years to protect the free and open internet with net neutrality – the principle that internet providers must treat all users' content equally. In 2015, together we finally won.

Now, Trump's FCC chairman is quietly moving to scrap the rules. Earlier this month, news reports revealed that FCC Chairman Ajit Pai wants to give up the FCC's role in protecting internet users and instead ask companies to voluntarily police themselves.1 If he's successful, the hard-fought victory to protect our rights on the internet will be lost.

Tell FCC Chairman Ajit Pai: Don't kill net neutrality. Click here to sign the petition.

Just as telephone companies connect callers in the order received without regard to how much they can pay, the internet under net neutrality is classified as a protected utility. Internet providers can't block content, slow traffic, or create "fast lanes" to prioritize websites whose owners pay more.2 Net neutrality protects our privacy, keeps broadband prices competitive and helps new companies to innovate. That's why consumer groups and internet businesses like Google, Facebook and Netflix all strongly support net neutrality and oppose Pai's plan to kill it.3

Pai's plan for the internet looks a lot like Paul Ryan's plan to repeal Obamacare. In both cases, Republicans are trying to replace a popular policy with an impractical and deceptive proposal. Like the Obamacare repeal plan, Pai's net neutrality "fix" would help a few corporations earn more profits by eliminating protections for the rest of us.

Pai's plan would ask telecom companies to voluntarily pledge to follow the principles of net neutrality and task the Federal Trade Commission with punishing offenders. As one commenter noted, the idea that Pai will get every large and small internet service provider to voluntarily put strong open internet provisions in their terms of service agreements is "pure nonsense."4 Even if companies agree, they could change their terms at any time. Meanwhile, broadband internet would no longer be classified as a utility, and the FCC would have abdicated its authority to protect internet users.

Republicans are trying to revoke our rights on the internet, and we need to fight back. We cannot allow Pai to move forward without a vocal and sustained opposition at every stage. Now, we need to stop Trump's FCC the same way we stopped Trump and Paul Ryan from repealing Obamacare.

Subject: Today We're (Literally) Calling on Amazon to Stop Funding Breitbart

Thank you again for signing the petition telling Amazon to stop supporting Breitbart's hate.

Amazon has taken notice, and is apparently weighing whether or not to join more than 1600 companies by boycotting ad placement on Breitbart.

Will you take 30 seconds today to call Amazon's Director of Investor Relations and ask him if Amazon will continue to invest in Breitbart's hate? You can use this number to be connected automatically to Amazon.

Call 1-844-334-3644

You don't have to say much. Just say something like this:

"I would like Amazon to stop investing in Breitbart's hate. Please stop all advertising on Breitbart."

(Important Note: If we fill up the voicemail box for Dave Fildes, this number will connect you to Amazon Support and you will have to be sure to press 0 after being connected. You can deliver the same message to support staff but please be polite.)

P.S. Hundreds of you responded yesterday to our call for action on Breitbart's hidden advertisers.  Look at all the people who have been tweeting and getting ads taken down from Breitbart: Tweets to remove Breitbart ads.   It's awesome!  And many have sent emails directly to the companies.  You can get involved right here.  Bit by bit, Breitbart's revenue is shrinking and their ability to expand globally is evaporating.
