FOX NEWS: Trump proposes cutting all federal funds for NPR, PBS

President Trump's latest budget could pull the rug out from under PBS and NPR. Just imagine a world with FOX News everywhere… and NPR GONE. It's Awful!! But sadly, right-wing donors and Special Interests HATE public funding for news and educational programming. So they're trying to kill NPR and PBS. We need to send a petition to Washington before anyone even THINKS about passing these cuts. [15,OOO Signatures Needed] Demand Congress SAVE NPR and PBS:

But sadly, right-wing donors and Special Interests HATE public funding for news and educational programming. So they're trying to kill NPR and PBS.

The 2019 federal budget that the White House unveiled Monday again proposes cutting all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funnels money to NPR and PBS. In a statement, President and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Patricia Harrison excoriated the proposal, suggesting it might even lead to fatalities.

"Americans place great value on having universal access to public media's educational and informational programming and services, provided commercial free and free of charge."

PBS and NPR have been producing educational programs and public safety broadcasting for decades. A Democracy without free, educational programs is DOOMED. Many Americans rely on these programs to learn about our country and the world. To support PBS and NPR is to support transparency. So we are sending an urgent petition to Congress to DEMAND they save PBS and NPR. Sign the petition now:

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough

The petition to Republicans in Congress reads:
"Put your constituents before the National Rifle Association.
Take immediate action to ban weapons of war, including assault weapons and
large capacity magazines, which have no place in the hands of private citizens."

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough

Within hours of Wednesday's deadly mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school – which took the lives of at least 17 people – Republican politicians without the courage to support real solutions to our gun violence crisis released statements and social media posts offering their "thoughts and prayers" to the victims and their families.1

It was the exact same cowardly, ineffectual response they offered after gunmen wielding AR-15 assault rifles killed people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a concert in Las Vegas, Pulse nightclub in Orlando and Sandy Hook Elementary School.2

It is time for Republicans in Congress to join Democrats in standing up to the National Rifle Association and pass an assault weapons ban that will save American lives.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Click here to sign the petition.

Tragic mass shootings like the one yesterday in South Florida have become all too common. The last 5 months alone now account for three of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.3 In the past 5 years, there have been nearly 300 school shootings in the United States4 – including 17 so far in 2018 alone.5

According to Newsweek, "Florida has some of the weakest gun laws in the country." Gun owners are not required to have a license, they are not required to register their guns and it is perfectly legal to own semi-automatic assault rifles like the one used in Wednesday's tragic shooting.6 The heartbreaking truth is that the combination of weak state and federal gun laws made Wednesday's horrific attack possible.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Click here to sign the petition.

There's one reason why politicians consistently fail to take real action on gun violence: The National Rifle Association. The NRA has a chokehold on Congress that keeps most bills about gun control from even coming to the floor for a vote. Politicians beholden to – or afraid of – the NRA are willing to turn their backs on their constituents when it comes time to implement reasonable limits and controls on guns. But you can count on them for a "heartbroken" tweet about their "thoughts and prayers" when a tragic shooting makes the national news.

Finally breaking the NRA's chokehold on Congress will require massive grassroots pressure on our elected officials, demanding that they deliver more than thoughts and prayers in the face of our epidemic of gun violence.

We must forcefully demand that Congress takes immediate action to ban weapons of war, including assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Please add your name to our emergency petition now.

Yesterday, another mass shooting took place in a school leaving 17 people dead and many others severely injured. It was the 18th school shooting in 2018, and it's only February.1,2

The shooter used an AR-15, a military-style assault weapon with large capacity magazines. This type of weapon was also used in previous mass shootings, including Aurora, Newtown, San Bernardino, Sutherland Springs, and Las Vegas.3

We do not want to hear our state and federal officials offering their thoughts and prayers for this latest tragedy—we want action now!

Sign the petition to ban military-style assault weapons and large capacity magazines in civilian society. They are designed to kill and injure large numbers of people in a short period of time.

Our schools must be havens for learning where students can feel safe and not have to worry about being gunned down in their own classrooms or on the playground. Military-style assault weapons are weapons of war and have no place in our communities.

We cannot allow the daily carnage in our country to be the new normal.

Tell Trump, Congress, and Florida legislators to act now to ban military-style assault weapons and large capacity magazines.

Subject: They're Privatizing Purdue

They're privatizing Purdu!

In five days the Higher Learning Commission, Purdue's regional accrediting body, will vote on the final step toward privatization. If the HLC votes in favor, online courses at public land-grant Purdue University will be produced and run by for-profit higher ed corporation Kaplan.

The
Indiana conference of the AAUP, along with the Purdue Social Justice Coalition, Hoosiers for Action, UnKoch My Campus, In the Public Interest, American Federation of Teachers, and elected officials across the state of Indiana have mounted a bold coalition-based resistance to this privatization deal. But we need your help.

Stand with us in urging the Higher Learning Commission to vote against accrediting Kaplan's online program at Purdue until issues of transparency, student welfare, and academic quality are resolved. Sign our #KeepPurduePublic petition.

Additionally, if you're a community leader, serving as a local elected official or at the helm of an organization, sign our Leader Sign-on Letter.

Kaplan
is notorious. And the lack of transparency with which the Purdue-Kaplan deal has been advanced is troubling -- even more so when considering Kaplan's record of unaccountability to their students.

As
Senators Dick Durbin and Sherrod Brown point out in their September 2017 letter cautioning Purdue University President Mitch Daniels: "Like nearly every major for-profit college, Kaplan has been the subject of numerous state and federal investigations and lawsuits. In 2014, the company reached a settlement with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to settle allegations that it made misleading marketing claims to Florida students. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey reached a settlement with Kaplan in 2015 related to inflated job placement numbers and unfair recruiting practices. Also in 2015, the company agreed to pay the U.S. Department of Justice more than $1 million to settle a False Claims Act lawsuit."

Tell the Higher Learning Commission to #KeepPurduePublic and say #NoKaplan.

Or if you're a community leader, sign here.

This
is just one piece of a bold coalition-based movement we're building to keep privatization out of public higher education. We hope you'll join us.

P.S.
Here's even more background information on the Purdue-Kaplan deal to share with friends and colleagues:
