Subject: Thursday in Troy: Vigil for peace and diplomacy

This is the week Congress votes for war or peace.

Thanks to the incredible work of thousands of MoveOn members and allies, 38 senators have now pledged to support peace and diplomacy.1

But the war hawks aren't giving up, so neither can we. In just a few days, as Congress begins voting on the Iran nuclear accord, Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are planning a massive pro-war rally in Washington, DC in a last-ditch effort to sway enough Democrats to abandon diplomacy.2

That's why MoveOn members and our allies are countering Trump and Cruz and declaring our support for peace and diplomacy by holding hundreds of candlelight vigils for peace all across the country this Thursday evening, including one in Troy.

Can you attend the vigil Thursday in Troy to join the call for peace, and show your support for diplomacy with Iran?

Yes, I'll be there!

We've come too far and are too close to a historic victory to let these warmongers derail diplomacy. Please join with thousands of everyday Americans who support peace this Thursday and send a message to Congress: vote for peace, not more war.

ABLE, LAWO, GDVLP 2015 Campaign

2015 Access to Justice Award Recipients Announced;
Gala Plans Under Way

Plans are under way for the 2015 Access to Justice Awards Gala, scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at the Sinclair Community College Ponitz Center starting at 5:30 p.m.  Awards will be presented to four honorees who have worked diligently as advocates for the rights of low-income and disadvantaged people living in the Miami Valley.

The Access to Justice Awards Gala is presented annually by the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO), and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), area providers of civil legal aid services. Proceeds will be used by LAWO, ABLE and the GDVLP to provide free legal assistance to low-income clients who are unable to afford an attorney when facing such issues as domestic violence, elder abuse, tenant /landlord and foreclosure issues, disability, health care, and immigration concerns.

Access to Justice Award Honorees

A Selection Committee comprised of representatives from a broad cross-section of the community selected the following honorees from public nominations:

David E. Larson of Altick and Corwin Co., LPA is the recipient of the Lloyd O'Hara Public Interest Law Award for his work in the areas of immigration legal assistance and community advocacy.

Derrick L. Foward, president of the NAACP, is recipient of the Community Advocacy Award for his diligence as a civil rights activist. St. Vincent de Paul is the recipient of the Community Impact Award for 30 years of service helping homeless individuals and families find shelter and gain stability.

A Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Dayton attorney D. Jeffrey Ireland; managing partner of Faruki Ireland & Cox P.L.L., for his long-time commitment and service to civil legal aid, and for his extensive community involvement. His efforts raised the bar on contributions to the Campaign for Equal Justice and the Access to Justice Awards Gala. Ireland also led the Salvation Army's $7.2 million Kroc Center Development campaign, served as Oakwood Mayor for 10 years, and has served on numerous community boards and committees.

"These recipients embody a unique commitment to the poor and disadvantaged in our Miami Valley community," says Thomas P. Whelley, II of Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP.  Whelley and his wife, Beth Whelley of Fahlgren Mortine, are co-chairs of the 2015 Access to Justice Awards Gala. "We are delighted by these selections."

Whelley adds, "This Gala is an important event to showcase what LAWO, ABLE and the GDVLP do for our community's most needy. It also is a necessary event to raise much needed funds to support the mission of these important community organizations."

WilmerHale, L.L.P. is the presenting sponsor of the Access to Justice Awards Gala, allowing all donations to be used to provide legal services to residents in need. "Funds from the Gala and Justice on Tap!, a fundraising event scheduled for Monday, October 5 at Warped Wing Brewery, will be combined with private contributions toward a goal of  $200,000 for the 2015 Campaign for Equal Justice," says Beth Whelley.

Individual Patron tickets are $100, Grand Patron $150. Reservations can be made with a credit card at
donate.ablelaw.org or by contacting Karla Garrett Harshaw at  kharshaw@ablelaw.org or (937) 535-4432. Tables, sponsorships, and ads also are available.

City Manager Responds to Dayton FOP Statement

Release Date:  Friday, September 4, 2015

In response to the letter issued by the Dayton Fraternal Order of Police today, I would like to offer the following clarifications regarding my statement of September 2. I emphasized then and repeat now that the traffic stop made by Officer Betsinger on August 15 was a lawful stop. My concern was about the lack of understanding between the officer and Mr. Felton and the perceptions that resulted.

My tenure as City Manager demonstrates my support of City employees and public safety employees specifically. The City Commission and I have worked closely with President Galbraith, our police administration, and officers throughout my time as Dayton City Manager and will continue to work with President Galbraith and the Fraternal Order of Police on matters of importance to the police work force. The safety of our officers and of our community continue to be my top priority as City Manager.
