Subject: WATCH: My conversation with Bernie

A few days ago, I had the real pleasure of introducing Senator Bernie Sanders at a California get-out-the vote rally. If you've ever been to a Bernie rally, you've experienced the roar of the crowd as Bernie steps up to the microphone. It's electric. It's inspiring. And it gives me hope for our future.

Just after the rally, Bernie and I had a few minutes to sit down and chat—about the campaign, this political moment, and how to make real change in America. It was just the two of us at a kitchen table sit-down of sorts (that is, with a video camera). Our conversation was so far-reaching (and funny and raw and a little profane), that we decided to team up with MoveOn to share this video will all of you the MoveOn members who have been so central to Bernie's campaign.

Please watch and share "Bernie and Bob" with your family and friends right now.

BernieandBob

Bernie's campaign has given voice to countless Americans who are hell-bent to take back our country.

It has changed our nation and our politics—hopefully forever. Now it's up to all of us. To you and me and the courage and grit it's going to take to fulfill the promise of this historic moment.

Please watch "Bernie and Bob" and share it with your family and friends—before the primaries
this coming Tuesday, while millions of Americans prepare to go to the polls.

P.S. This Tuesday is the final big election day of the primary season. Do you have some time this weekend to help make sure every Bernie supporter gets out to the polls? Click here to find the nearest volunteer opportunity or to make a few calls from your home.

Subject: BREAKING: President Obama wants to expand Social Security

This afternoon, President Obama announced his support for a great idea: increasing Social Security benefits. As Talking Points Memo reports, the president said:

"We can't afford to weaken Social Security, we should be strengthening Social Security," Obama said. "And not only do we need to strengthen its long term health, it's time we finally made Social Security more generous and increased its benefits so today's retirees and future generations get the dignified retirement that they have earned."

Obama suggested the country pay for expanding Social Security by asking the "wealthiest Americans to contribute a little bit more."

"They can afford it," he added. "I can afford it."

This is huge. Only a few years ago, the President included cuts to Social Security in his budget. This change came about because of your work, and your support. With your donation, we can make expanding Social Security a reality.

Since you took a past action with us to protect and expand Social Security, I wanted to make sure you saw this big news:

President Obama, for the first time, called for an expansion of Social Security, in an economics speech on Wednesday.

Your activism is really helping to move the needle on this important issue, as it does on many of the issues we work on together!

Subject: Obama supports Election Day holiday? Let's do it!

President Obama recently expressed support for making Election Day a holiday!

Now let's see some action on it!

add my name

Did you know that the US is 120th out of 169 countries in average voter turnout? That's a disgrace… one that's directly attributable to policies and conditions that make it hard for Americans -- particularly working Americans -- to vote.

Many other industrialized countries give their voters a holiday to cast their votes or hold elections on the weekend. It increases turnout dramatically.

Asked recently if he thinks it's time for the US to follow other counties with an Election Day holiday, President Obama said, "Absolutely. We are the only advanced democracy that makes it deliberately difficult for people to vote…"

And the good thing is the president has the ability to do something about it!

He can sign an Executive Order that would make Election Day 2016 a one-time federal holiday … but the chances that he will are slim-to-none if he doesn't hear from a massive groundswell of Americans demanding the action.

Please join members of PFAW and an impressive coalition of pro-democracy organizations in creating that groundswell.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.couragecampaign.org/images/Election2016_Fed_Holiday_Election_Polls_EmailGraphic.jpgYou won't believe it. After we flooded the White House with thousands of signatures, President Barack Obama announced his support for making election day a national holiday.(1) He went on to say, "We are the only advanced democracy that makes it deliberately difficult for people to vote…. everything we can do to make sure that we're increasing participation is something that we should promote and encourage." We couldn't agree more!

But, here's the catch -- Creating another national holiday would incur massive pushback from corporate interests in an election year, and President Obama needs to know you have his back. He needs to hear from passionate people like YOU one more time to make sure he has the courage to put his money where his mouth is!

JOIN Courage Campaign and eleven other organizations to call on President Obama to make November 8, 2016 -- the next U.S. Federal Election Day -- a national holiday.

Munsup, the United States has one of the WORST voter turnouts in the world, putting us below countries like Tunisia, Yemen, and Iran!(2) Having our elections in the middle of the week, with limited hours, makes it hard for many Americans to get to the polls. It's especially difficult for people with multiple jobs or children with after-school commitments; people with strict working or school hours; or people with long commutes or limited transportation.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the Supreme Court gutted the historic Voting Rights Act in 2013.(3) This allowed a significant number of states to issue discriminatory voter ID bills and cut back on early voting and same day registration. These discriminatory reforms have made it even harder for people to vote, especially people of color, young voters, and low-income voters.(4)

But with the stroke of his executive pen, President Obama can make our next federal election a one-time national holiday, giving millions of Americans more freedom to get to the polls and exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Sign on to help make election day a federal holiday.

November 8th, 2016 is going to be one of our country's most historic elections. It will determine the next President, control of Congress, national leaders up and down the ticket, critical state ballot measures, and so much more. And since this is President Obama's final term in the White House, this may be our last chance!

With so much on the line, we must act now. But first, President Obama needs to know that YOU'VE GOT HIS BACK to make sure that he does the right thing.

JOIN US to urge President Obama to make the next U.S. Federal Election Day a national holiday!

Subject: Not a good week for the Donald #FridayHotTakes

Donald J. Trump was not someone you wanted to be this week. From the not-so-shocking allegations of fraud and predatory practices against Trump University to the discovery of even more sexist comments towards women, Donald couldn't catch a break. Check out our rundown of this week's insanity in our #FridayHotTakes:

1. Trump University made big news this week
And it took hit after hit as a predatory scam designed to take advantage of those who were most vulnerable.

2. Trump defended his Trump University con… with another con.
Turns out that every person who gave a "testimonial" for the university actually has other ties to Trump. Pathetic!

3. We think there's yet another thing Trump doesn't want us seeing in his tax returns…
Like the fact that he moved many of his trademarks to Delaware to cut his income tax bill.

4. Trump insulted (more) women
This week, it was revealed that Trump once said, "Putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing." Yikes.

5. Hillary Clinton gave a speech on her foreign policy vision for America
And destroyed Trump's incoherence along with it, proving that she can do what the entirety of the GOP couldn't.

6. In a stunning display of a missing backbone, Paul Ryan endorsed Donald Trump.
The same guy who, just a few months ago, said Trump's policies are not what the GOP and what America stand for. Sad!

And the most prestigious award, Tweet of the Week, goes to ...jmartNYT!

Subject: Amazon is debating sponsoring TRUMP?!?

Don't let Amazon sponsor the Trump-led RNC!

Hv

Tell Amazon: "Reject Trump's racism, bigotry, and sexism. Cancel any plans to sponsor the Republican National Convention."

Take Action

BREAKING: The New York Times is reporting that – thanks to ColorOfChange members like you – Hewlett Packard (HP) is "declining to help pay for the Republican National Convention, as pressure builds on the business community to repudiate Donald J. Trump."This is a huge testament to the power of our community. But this fight is not over as many tech companies still need to hear from us and dump Trump.

Despite Donald Trump's violent, sexist, and racist march to the Republican nomination, Amazon.com still hasn't committed to canceling plans to support Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention. It's outrageous that one of the world's largest companies is even considering sponsoring an event for someone as violently anti-Black, anti-Muslim, anti-Latino, and anti-women as Trump.

Trump's hateful message and thinly-veiled threats of violence are likely to lead to significant unrest in Cleveland during the convention.

Amazon has a history-making choice right now. Amazon can stand with the vast majority of Americans who reject Trump's message of violence and hate or they can forever be associated with Donald Trump.

Will you call on Amazon's executives and ask them not to support Trump's convention?

Taking a stand against Trump's coronation at the RNC should not be a difficult choice for Amazon. It speaks volumes that HP – a company that has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to past conventions, and is helmed by a long-time member of the Republican party – has pulled out of the RNC. It's a clear acknowledgement that what we're all witnessing right now is beyond traditional party politics. They are not willing to associate their brand with someone who has leveraged white nationalist allies and isolationist language to secure a presidential nomination. Amazon needs to hear from their costumers that we expect the same level of integrity from them.

Help us remind Amazon what's at stake for them and folks across the country if they sponsor Trump.

Subject: Sign the petition: Tell Democrats NO to a lame duck vote on TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal is a bad deal for American workers. The TPP is an agreement that would move 40% of the global economy even more in favor of multinational corporations and corporate lobbyists.

But it cannot go into effect unless Congress votes to approve it.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has spoken out against this trade deal. Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders oppose the TPP and oppose holding a vote on it during a lame duck session of Congress -- after the November election, but before members are sworn in for the new session.

Sign this petition to stand with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton: Tell the Democratic Party Platform Committee: No lame duck vote on the TPP!

The Democratic Party Platform Committee has been formed and is still developing the party's platform. The four Members of Congress serving on the committee -- Reps. Keith Ellison, Luis Gutierrez, Elijah Cummings, and Barbara Lee -- all oppose the TPP and voted no to Fast Track the TPP.

Sign to tell the Committee: The party platform must indicate that there will not be a vote on the TPP after the November election. No lame duck vote on TPP!

Unhappiness in America
By: Carol Graham

Everyone is struggling to understand why so many whites—including many who are not suffering economically—are rallying to the angry words and fearful music of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. Meanwhile, blacks and other minorities are sticking with the status-quo incrementalism of Hillary Clinton. It's an odd juxtaposition, but there's an explanation, one with far-reaching ramifications. A wide and growing optimism gap has opened between poor and middle-class whites and their counterparts of other races—and the former are the congenital pessimists.
