Subject: Welcome Tim Kaine

I'm thrilled to share this news: I've chosen Tim Kaine as my running mate.

Tim is a lifelong fighter for progressive causes and one of the most qualified vice presidential candidates in our nation's history.

But his credentials alone aren't why I asked him to run alongside me.

Like me, Tim grew up in the Midwest. During law school, he too took an unconventional path -- he took time off and went to Honduras to work with missionaries, practicing both his faith and his Spanish.

When he returned to the states and graduated from Harvard Law, he could have done anything. But instead of going to some big corporate firm, he chose to fight housing discrimination as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond. He and his wife joined a church, built a home centered around their faith, and raised three beautiful children. Then, after 17 years of practicing law, Tim ran for city council -- and won.

Tim says his experience on city council taught him everything he knows about politics. To the people in Richmond, an underfunded school wasn't a Democratic or Republican problem. It was simply a problem that needed fixing, and his constituents were counting on him to solve it. So Tim would do it. He'd roll up his sleeves and get the job done, no matter what.

He's a man of relentless optimism who believes no problem is unsolvable if you're willing to put in the work. That commitment to delivering results has stayed with him throughout his decades-long career as a public servant. So I could give you a laundry list of things he went on to accomplish -- as mayor of Richmond, governor of Virginia, and in the United States Senate.

But this is what's important: Tim has never taken a job for the glory or the title. He's the same person whether the cameras are on or off. He's sincerely motivated by the belief that you can make a difference in people's lives through public service.

That quality comes through in every interaction. To know Tim is to love him. When I was talking to people about this decision, I couldn't find anyone -- Democrat or Republican -- who had a bad thing to say about him. From his staff over the last 20 years to his colleagues in the Senate, Tim's beloved.

He is a genuinely nice person, but Tim is no one's punching bag. He will fight tooth and nail for American families, and he'll be a dogged fighter in our campaign against Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

I want you to know that I didn't make this decision lightly.

I've had the privilege of seeing two presidents and two vice presidents up close. I want a vice president who can be my partner in bringing this country together. I want someone who will be able to give me their best advice, look me in the eye, and tell me they disagree with me when they do.

But what matters most is a simple test that's not so simple to meet: whether the person could step in at a moment's notice and serve as president.

I have no doubt that Tim can do the job.

I want him by my side on the trail and in the White House.

Welcome him to our team, and let him know you're proud to have him. Chip in today:

Subject: BREAKING: KKK leader David Duke announces U.S. Senate run

I'm disgusted with the presidential campaign. Not since George Wallace's racist campaign nearly 50 years ago have we seen mainstream candidates appealing so openly to the radical right.

White supremacists feel so emboldened that KKK leader David Duke announced today that he's running for the open Senate seat in Louisiana to stop the "ethnic cleansing" of white people.

Please make a special gift today and help the SPLC track and expose haters and extremists during the final months of the election.

It's no surprise that hate group members and extremists are clamoring to support candidates. They're energized and showing up to rallies.

The SPLC is committed to unmasking influential haters in mainstream society and putting a stop to their bigotry.
Please make a special gift to help us:

  • call out candidates who exploit racial divisions and stoke violence;
  • expose bigots who are advising and influencing mainstream candidates; and
  • track down the sources of hate group propaganda used by politicians.

Please let me know that you're with us by making a donation today for all of our work fighting hate and bigotry.

P.S. And, please speak out against those who seek to divide us along the lines of race and ethnicity.
Most important, encourage everyone you know to go to the polls and make their voices heard.

50,000 SIGNATURES NEEDED: Demand the Trump campaign apologize for plagiarizing Michelle Obama →

On Monday night, Melania Trump spoke at the GOP Convention, an we couldn't believe it.

Her speech lifted entire sections from the historic address Michelle Obama gave to the Democratic Convention in 2008.

This level of flagrant disrespect for a sitting First Lady is absolutely UNPRECEDENTED. We cannot let the Trump campaign get away with this.

Tell Trump: Apologize to Michelle Obama

-- this is hypocrisy at its worst.

Just last year, Donald Trump personally accused our President and Vice President of plagiarism.

Now, in front of millions of people, Trump's campaign did exactly that -- stealing from Michelle Obama and thinking they can get away with it.

We will NOT sit idly by while our First Lady is treated with disrespect.

This is long but I hope you will take a few minutes and read the whole thing.

Donald Trump's big speech last night was full of false humility, false promises, false sympathy (for minorities, women, and workers), and outright falsehoods. He affirmed various right-wing tropes for his base, but the speech was -- at its core -- a naked attempt to con the voters Trump and the Republicans need to sway to their side by November.

Trump was introduced by his daughter Ivanka, who was completely out of touch with the Republican Party by claiming that Trump would change labor laws to ensure equality in the workplace for women and, especially, mothers. Of course, the Republican Party has firmly opposed those same policies for years, and the federal judges promised by Trump subscribe to an ideology that shuns protections for women -- not to mention the fact that Trump himself has called pregnancy "an inconvenience" for business.

Citing the recent mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Trump promised to keep LGBTQ Americans, specifically, safe from Islam … but what they really need is to be kept safe from Republican policies!

Trump's chosen running mate, Mike Pence, is the most anti-gay vice presidential nominee in memory. He once called for HIV/AIDS funding to be reallocated to "gay conversion therapy."

This Republican Convention, just days before Trump's speech, passed the most anti-gay major party platform EVER -- including opposition to same-sex marriage, adoption by LGBT people, and protections for transgendered students, as well as support for, you guessed it, "gay conversion therapy."

And almost the very next part of Trump's speech focused on the kind of Supreme Court justices he wants to appoint the kind that have consistently opposed legal protections for LGBT rights! (Let's not forget that earlier this year Trump pledged to nominated justices who were against what he called the "shocking" Supreme Court decision affirming marriage equality as a right.)

Trump also distorted statistics to gin up the anxiety and inflame many of the false perceptions driven by right-wing media lies, oversaturation of sensationalistic news stories, and the violent videos and memes that constantly go viral on social media.

The reality is that, despite recent high-profile, and rightfully concerning, tragedies, violent crime is at historically low levels, and has been trending down, not up. Same goes for illegal immigration. And those are just two examples -- Trump also promoted Orwellian notions about our military being "depleted," refugees not being vetted, and the US being humiliated on the global stage that run directly counter to the actual facts.

As one of my colleagues here at PFAW pointed out, Trump was lying from his very first breath last night, when he said he "humbly" accepts his party's nomination -- clearly, this is not a man who does anything "humbly." In fact, Trump seems to believe a previous convention speaker's assertion that he "is sent from God."

The entire theme of Trump's speech was that the country is beset by crises of a historic magnitude and that Trump and ONLY Trump can save us. His speech, which has widely been called "apocalyptic," made the case that Americans are completely unsafe, and are under siege from enemies both within and outside our borders … that the state of the economy is terrible.

He said he would fix all of our problems quickly upon taking office -- make the streets safe, bring back all of our lost manufacturing jobs, expand opportunity for young people and minorities, and more -- but declined to say how.

He also reminded the crowd that his economic "plan" includes the biggest tax cut of all of this year's candidates in either major party -- weighted heavily for the ultra-rich, of course -- but at the same time promised wildly expensive programs, including his infamous border wall -- the price tag of which analysts estimate would be at least $25 billion (no, Mexico is not going to pay for it). It's a recipe for a behemoth deficit … but of course, facts don't matter … and never have for Trump.

Now, as if all of that wasn't scary enough, here's the really scary part: There are many -- too many -- Americans that will find all of Trump's blustery rhetoric and empty promises appealing. If there is anything history has taught, it's that when people are afraid, they will put power in the hands of strongman leaders who promise safety and national glory. We're even seeing it right now in other places in the world.

Sadly, no one should be surprised to see Donald Trump get a significant post-convention bump in the polls, and even gain on Hillary Clinton.

We need to keep voters' attention on the GOP's radical agenda, and on the hate and extremism that were on display all week long at their convention.

We need to ERASE any polling bounce and success Trump gets from last night's speech.

And we need to DEFEAT right-wing extremists like Trump and many of the other candidates running in the GOP.

If you have not yet given a financial contribution in 2016 to support our efforts, now is really the time to give.

If you have already given generously, there could be no more important time to give again.

Will you chip in now to help us fight back and stop Trump and Trump Republicans?

Yes, I'll give today>>

ON THE BUS FROM THE RNC TO THE DNC

Goodbye Cleveland; Philly Next Week

http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=ngOj1nN/ZGUwhp9zi0j1UQJxXbuJbwsCWe have left Cleveland and are now driving through the northeastern part of the United States on our way to Philadelphia and the Democratic Convention. Tonight, Donald Trump is making his acceptance speech and you can bet Nuns on the Bus will be watching and tweeting—be sure to follow along at @Sr_Simone, @NETWORKLobby, and #NunsontheBus.

Cleveland was unlike anything we could have imagined. We started the morning with our first ever Facebook Live interview. We divided into two teams: "Holy Curiosity 1" and "Holy Curiosity 2" and roamed the streets with wagons full of lemonade. We asked delegates three questions: Who in your family is difficult to talk to about politics? What concerns do you have about the election? What gives you hope in our nation?

Our lemonade ministry was met with mixed reactions—but we were able to have a conversation with delegates and other RNC attendees about what concerns they had. Read more about our lemonade ministry in the news and on our blog.

A few other highlights from this leg of the trip:

In Toledo, Rep. Marcy Kaptur joined Nuns on the Bus and thanked Catholic Sisters for their work on the Affordable Care Act, which helped mend the gap in access to healthcare for millions of people across our nation. Read more about our time in Toledo.

http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=7iRXpBAY7GwfqOdXvj3+kwJxXbuJbwsCWe are so glad that Buffalo's St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral invited us to visit the statue of "Homeless Jesus" to remind people of Matthew 25:35 "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you https://networklobby.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/SistersinRochester.jpggave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." Rep. Brian Higgins shared a powerful story about the first time Congressman John Lewis visited Buffalo as a young boy from Alabama and realized that desegregation was possible. Watch the video

We picked up some new sisters along the way and said goodbye to some sisters from the first half of our trip. We hope to see those of you in the northeast at one of our events in the next few days or in Philadelphia at the DNC!

From: Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos
Subject: WOW! GOP in retreat, Kochs pulling out of must-win Senate race

The latest:

  • Republicans are in full-on panic mode. Donald Trump is officially the Republican Party's nominee for president. The Republican National Convention has been a disaster for them. Hillary Clinton is leading in the polls.
  • The Koch brothers have started abandoning at-risk GOP senators. Koch-funded Freedom Partners just canceled a whopping $2.2 million ad buy in Wisconsin, where incumbent GOP Sen. Ron Johnson has struggled in the polls. The Kochs abandoning Wisconsin suggests they think the race is unwinnable and that their money would be better-used elsewhere.
  • This could be the beginning of a full-scale GOP retreat. Trump is toxic and he could sink the entire GOP ticket this fall—Democrats could run the table. We need to respond to the Kochs' retrenchment with a surge of support for Democrats running in must-win Senate seats for that to happen.

Can you chip in $1 to each of Daily Kos' endorsed candidates for Senate?

From: Michael Phelan, Social Security Works
Subject: Overruling the will of the voters

It was not that long ago that the conventional wisdom in Washington was that in order to "save" Social Security, we had to make deep cuts. But you changed that.

We fought attempts to cut, privatize and dismantle Social Security. And now 79% of the American people – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – want to expand Social Security's benefits and pay for it by asking the wealthy to pay their fair share.

The American people are clear on expanding, never cutting Social Security. And we need to ensure that the peoples' voices are heard in all areas of our politics.

Unfortunately, in the Democratic Party's presidential nominating process the "superdelegates" – Party insiders and elected officials – play a heavy role. The 712 unelected superdelegates make up 30% of the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, enough to overrule the will of the voters in a close election.

Sign the petition today: Tell the Democratic Party to abolish superdelegates and ensure our voices are heard.

Thanks to your activism and overwhelming support from the American people, expanding, not cutting Social Security is included in the Democratic Party Platform for the first time. But we have seen how politicians – under pressure from wealthy donors – can deny the will of the people.

Next week, when Democrats gather in Philadelphia, it is critical that our voices are heard.

Please, sign the petition today demanding that the Democratic Party abolish superdelegates.

The American public must be heard. And superdelegates interference should never overrule the people.

From: Eddie Kurtz, Courage Campaign Super PAC
Subject: Sign if you agree: Put an end to "super-delegates" at the DNC

Join activists from across the country to say: "No more super-delegates."

Party leaders should never trump the will of the voters. Period. Yet that is what's happening with the Democratic Party's "super-delegate" system.(1)

Supporters of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and others are uniting to end super-delegates before an important floor vote at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia next week. And we need you to join us to send a powerful message to the DNC.

Join Courage Campaign and our partners to become a co-signer of a coalition letter to the DNC asking them to end the role of super-delegates!

Under the current nominating rules, the 712 super-delegates are free to support any candidate for the presidential nomination at the party's national convention. Absurdly, these un-elected delegates have roughly as much weight as ALL of the pledged delegates from the two largest states in the country, California and New York, combined.(2)

Super-delegates are elected officials and well-connected members of the party. It was the preferences of super-delegates -- rather than California voters -- that led the Associated Press to declare Hillary Clinton the winner of the Democratic nomination the night before Californians actually voted.(3)

That's not OK. The principle of one person, one vote is a core value of the Democratic Party, and it's crucial that our nominating process reflects that value.

SIGN THE LETTER TO THE DNC DEMANDING AN END TO SUPER-DELEGATES.

In addition to undermining the concept of one person, one vote, the current super-delegate system undermines the Democratic Party's commitment to gender equity. While the party's charter rightfully mandates that equal numbers of pledged delegates be male and female, a near super-majority of super-delegates are men. The Democratic Party also prides itself on its commitment to racial justice and having diversity among its ranks. Yet the 712 super-delegates skew the party away from the appropriate representation of communities of color. Proportionately, this year there are 20% fewer super-delegates from communities of color than was true of the voters when compared to 2008 and 2012.(4)

In short, the super-delegate system is unrepresentative, contradicts the purported values of the party and its members, and reduces the party's moral authority. Join us to help end it.

Yours in the fight to put an end to super-delegates,

Eddie, along with Annie, Emma, Ernesto, Kelsey, Laura, Lindsay, Moonyoung, Scottie, and Tim (the Courage team)
