John Lewis is a true champion of voting rights.

As a young man, John Lewis marched alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. from Selma to Montgomery at the helm of America's Civil Rights Movement.
He carried that fight to Washington, where he was instrumental in passing the Voting Rights Act to ensure every American has the opportunity to participate in our Democracy.

Tell Congress: Don't cut Medicare, expand it

"Do not cut America's health care benefits by supporting the Republican plan to raise
the Medicare eligibility age at a time when millions of Americans have no retirement savings."

Sign the petition ►

House Speaker Paul Ryan just introduced a plan to slash America's earned health care benefits. His latest Don't cut Medicare, expand it.attack on Medicare would raise the eligibility age from 65 to 67, leaving millions stuck paying for expensive private insurance at a time when countless Americans have little or no retirement savings.1

Ryan is making it clear, yet again, that gutting Medicare is a key component of his Republican Party's extreme right-wing agenda. We need a loud and immediate outcry to stop this plan in its tracks, and make sure both parties know cutting Medicare is a political loser.

Tell Congress: Don't cut Medicare, expand it. Click here to sign the petition.

The vast majority of Americans are working long into their retirement years just to stay afloat. According to recent estimates, America's future retirees together have $7.7 trillion less in savings than they will need to retire with dignity. They will become the first generation in recent history to retire to a lower standard of living than their parents.2

In the face of such a retirement crisis, we should be expanding Medicare, not cutting it, by immediately lowering the eligibility age to at least 62.

If Republicans really want to save on health care costs instead of punishing America's working class, they would take on price-gouging drug companies. The price of pharmaceutical drugs is skyrocketing, as Big Pharma monopolies buy up competitors and rake in record profits.3 But at a time when the pharmaceutical industry is rife with immoral operators like Martin Shkreli, the "Pharma Bro" who bought an AIDS drug and immediately increased the price astronomically, Republicans still oppose allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices.4

Tell Congress: Don't cut Medicare, expand it. Click here to sign the petition.

Despite sensational claims, many working Americans are not living longer. If you are a member of the 1 percent, you can expect to live more than a decade longer than the poorest Americans.5 In fact, the lives of Americans experiencing lifelong poverty are getting shorter.6 Republicans are citing misleading statistics in order to justify pushing Americans into the hands private capital and profit-making health care enterprises.

America's retirees paid into Medicare their whole lives and earned the benefits Republicans want to take away. We need to make it clear right from the start that such a plan is absolutely unacceptable.

The link is a tough read:
https://www.ssa.gov/oact/trsum/

STATUS OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE PROGRAMS

I wish to point out a few things:   First and foremost, we must never let Social Security be privatized.   Why?   Look at what happened to the value of teacher's pension funds, policemen pension funds and firemen pension funds which were invested by Wall Street and Banks during the 2008 financial meltdown.   Those Public Service Employee's pension funds took a terrible hit.

Closely tied into that thought; in the private sector, is the rise of the 401(k) to replace corporate traditional pensions.   People in the two lowest quintiles in earnings, maybe even the three lowest, just couldn't participate in the 401(k) to any great extent because they needed their earnings to live on.   So they could not save for retirement via the 401(k).   That means that Social Security is tremendously important to them.

Do you check yourself out at the grocery store or at Walmart?  If you do, you are depriving somebody of a job.   That somebody would pay Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Think for a moment.   The Baby Boomers began retiring six years ago.   They get a Social Security check and Medicare.

Let me define the generations for you before I continue:

The Millennial Generation born 1981 to 1997 now 19-35.

Generation X born 1965 to 1980 now 36 51.

The Baby Boom Generation born 1945 to 1964 now 71 to 52.

The Silent Generation born 1928 to 1944 now 86 to 54.

The Greatest Generation born before 1928 now 87 and older.

Right now, the Millennial Generation is the biggest in numbers followed by the Baby Boom Generation.   But the Baby Boom Generation did not have as many kids as their parents did.

I am going to give you an FYI:   There are places in the good old US of A where hamburgers are made entirely by robots.   (Good bye burger flipper jobs.)   How much in Social Security and Medicare taxes do robots pay?   My guess is ZERO.

I say it is time to start tweaking the system.   For 2016, the maximum amount of taxable earnings for Social Security purposes is $118,500.
00.   Why should those earning above $118,500.00 be exempt from paying Social Security taxes on every penny they earn over $118,500.00?

To me a dollar is a dollar.   A dollar earned by a person's labor is worth exactly the same as a dollar earned by capital gains.   Capital gains should be taxed for Social Security and Medicare.

This is going to send an even worse chill up a Laissez Faire Capitalist's back.   Since many people use expensive software to "day trade", why not impose a Social Security and Medicare tax on each and every stock market trade?

From Wiki:  Day trading is
speculation in securities, specifically buying and selling financial instruments within the same trading day.   Strictly, day trading is trading only within a day, such that all positions are closed before the market closes for the trading day.   Many traders may not be so strict or may have day trading as one component of an overall strategy.  Traders who participate in day trading are called day traders.   Traders who trade in this capacity with the motive of profit are therefore speculators.

See how easy an unsolvable problem can be solved?

Alton Sterling was a 37-year-old Black father of five selling CDs outside of a local store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He did not deserve to die.

Yet here we are again. Another Black man slain by police. Another hashtag carrying the fury and pain of his community. And another family deep in mourning—in the same state that passed the 'Blue Lives Matter' bill to silence protests against police violence.

On Tuesday night, Alton Sterling was selling CDs outside a local store, like he always does, when police arrived on the scene. The police tased him, held him down on the ground, and shot him in the chest and back. In the witness-recorded video, you can hear one of the officers shouting "If you f---ing move, I swear to God!"

These officers have no respect for Black life, and must be held accountable.

News just broke that the FBI and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division will be leading an independent investigation into his murder—and we have to keep up the pressure until they deliver accountability.

That's why I signed a petition to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, which says:

"The Department of Justice must bring charges against the Baton Rouge police officers who killed Alton Sterling. Over and over again, we have been forced to witness the killings of Black people on video without any accountability. Local prosecutors have proven to be almost completely opposed to bringing charges against police. Now that the Department of Justice is leading the investigation, you have the authority to swiftly resolve this tragedy by prosecuting the officers who treated Alton Sterling's life with such disregard.

Both you and President Obama have repeatedly emphasized the need to build trust between police and communities but how can Black communities trust law enforcement when even the worst police killings don't result in any consequences for officers. Please make the right choice and bring charges against these officers."

Justice for Alton and Philando

The pain is unbearable. Like so many of you, I woke up to yet another video of a Black man's death autoplaying in my social media feed--and it feels like we're in a never-ending nightmare.

Philando Castile's murder comes less than 24 hours after the cops executed Alton Sterling.1 And it's just as devastating, just as infuriating to wake up to this for the second day in a row. The officer shot him four times after pulling him, his girlfriend, and his daughter over for a broken taillight. Philando's girlfriend, Diamond "Lavish" Reynolds, livestreamed the entire incident on Facebook--you can hear the officer screaming at her while she tries to hold it together and her four-year-old daughter says "It's ok, Mommy. I'm right here with you."2 Then Diamond was arrested while the police took her child away.

Sign the petition demanding accountability for Philando Castile and Alton Sterling's murders.

Philando Castile complied with the officers' orders. He had a concealed carry permit. The only thing he could've done to avoid being killed was to not be Black yesterday.

There's a lot we can't make sense of, but one thing is clear after these two hard days: Law and order is not going to save us. Policing in our communities does NOT equal safety. It has been nearly two years since protestors in Ferguson inspired a national outcry for police accountability.3 But our leaders have only increased their investment in the very police departments that are killing us. They do this with body cameras, racially-biased policing software, and 'Blue Lives Matter' bills while Black communities deal with the same outcomes of police terror and over-incarceration.4

The Department of Justice still hasn't agreed to launch a federal investigation into Philando's murder--but we're calling on them to bring accountability to the Baton Rouge and Falcon Heights police departments and bring charges in both Alton Sterling's and Philando Castile's cases. Will you sign the petition?

I don't want to wake up to another police killing tomorrow or the day after that.

Alton Sterling was a 37-year-old Black father of five selling CDs outside of a local store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.5 He did not deserve to die.

Yet here we are again. Another Black man slain by police. Another hashtag carrying the fury and pain of his community. And another family deep in mourning – in the same state that passed the 'Blue Lives Matter' bill to silence protests against police violence.6

News just broke that the FBI and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division will be leading an independent investigation into his murder – and we have to keep up the pressure until they deliver accountability.7 Will you sign the petition demanding the Department of Justice bring charges against the two officers that killed Alton Sterling?

Tell the Department of Justice: Don't waste any time. Bring charges against the officers that killed Alton Sterling NOW.

On Tuesday night, Alton Sterling was selling CDs outside a local store, like he always does, when police arrived on the scene. The police tased him, held him down on the ground, and shot him in the chest and back. In the witness-recorded video, you can hear the officer shouting "If you f---ing move, I swear to God!"8

The Baton Rouge police pulled a gun out of his pocket after they killed him. However, witness accounts say Sterling was not holding the gun, and his hands were never near his pockets. This is eerily akin to the killing of Eric Garner.9

When Alton Sterling's aunt, Sandra Sterling, heard about the killing and tried to identify her nephew, the Baton Rouge police – showing no remorse for what they had just done – threatened to taser her too.10 These officers have no respect for Black life, and must be held accountable.

Tell the Department of Justice to hold the officers that killed Alton Sterling accountable.

It's no coincidence that Alton Sterling's murder took place in the same state that signed the 'Blue Lives Matter' law designed to feign protection of police instead of actually protecting Black lives – or that Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate across the country.11

In so many ways, Black people are under attack in Louisiana. But an independent investigation by the Department of Justice could mean systemic changes in local policing as well as accountability for Alton Sterling's killers. When the FBI and DOJ took over the Walter Scott investigation, it led to multiple indictments including a murder charge from the state.12 If thousands of us stand up now, we can make sure the Department of Justice brings charges against Alton Sterling's murderers too.

Sign the petition. Demand the Department of Justice ensures accountability for Alton Sterling's murder.

Yesterday morning, we witnessed 15-year-old Cameron Sterling's heart-rending breakdown at the press conference about his father Alton's shooting death by law enforcement.[1]

This morning, we woke up to the grief of Valerie Castile, who is experiencing every parent's nightmare: the death of a child, who also died at the hands of an officer of the law. Her son, Philando Castile of Falcon Heights, Minnesota, had a permit to carry a gun and was shot and killed by police during a minor traffic stop because of a broken taillight. [2] His girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds, and her 4-year-old daughter were in the car with him at the time and she videoed the aftermath, including her young daughter heartbreakingly comforting her mom with, "It's O.K., Mommy. It's O.K. I'm right here with you." [3]

Families should never have to fear that our loved ones could come to harm at the hands of those charged with protecting them.

Join us in calling on the executive branch of the federal government to take comprehensive steps to protect civil and human rights for everyone!

Philando Castile of Falcon Heights, Minnesota, and Alton Sterling of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, join a long and unending line of African American and Latino youth and community members killed by police, including:

  • Eric Garner, husband and father, who was choked to death in New York. [4]
  • John Crawford, who was shot to death when he picked up a toy gun that was for sale in an Ohio Walmart. [5]
  • Seventeen-year-old unarmed Jesús Huerta was shot to death while handcuffed in the back of a police car. [6]
  • Eighteen-year-old unarmed Ramarley Graham who was shot to death in Bronx, NY [7]
  • Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black woman who was found hanged in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas. [8]

This year, already more than 500 people have been shot and killed by police. [9] Studies show that, even though White Americans outnumber Black Americans five-fold, Black people are three times more likely than White people to be killed when they encounter the police in the US, [10] and Black teenagers are far likelier to be killed by police than White teenagers. [11]

Enough is enough.

*Tell the executive branch of the federal government it's time to take comprehensive steps to protect civil and human rights for everyone!

At the national level, we need higher standards of policing, strengthened accountability mechanisms, and critical reforms to end: Biased racial profiling, police brutality, and militarized policing targeting African American and Latino youth, families, and communities throughout our country.

Local police departments have all too often been ineffective in investigating themselves. It is time for fair, outside, independent, federal investigation and prosecution of police misconduct. The more pressure we mount, the more voices we share, the stronger the call for justice.

Every day there is another death. We must end this now.

Subject: Sign if you agree: The DNC platform must include unequivocal opposition to TPP

The fight to stop the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) has reached another critical point.

Members of the Democratic National Convention Platform Drafting Committee voted against an amendment that would have unequivocally stated the Democratic Party's opposition to the TPP.

Members of the committee who helped defeat the amendment – including some who say they personally oppose the TPP – argued that it would be disloyal to President Obama and compromise party unity if the pro-TPP views held by the president and other high-ranking Democratic officials' were not considered.

But the goal of the Platform is to "advance progressive Democratic values" – not demonstrate loyalty to an outgoing president by supporting his anti-worker, anti-environment trade deal. We have a huge opportunity in the coming days to pressure the Full Platform Committee to reverse course and take a stand against the TPP before it finalizes the Platform on July 9 in Orlando.

Sign the petition from CREDO and Daily Kos: The DNC platform must include unequivocal opposition to TPP.

All the Democratic presidential candidates along with the vast majority of Democrats in Congress oppose the TPP, recognizing it as a corporate power grab that would destroy jobs, pollute the environment, and undermine corporate accountability both at home and abroad.

There should be no question where the Democratic Party stands on this basic issue. A strong, clear message that the TPP is an unacceptable deal is what is necessary, and what will unite the party. The language must be irrefutable.

As we speak, supporters of the TPP are gearing up for one last push get the deal through Congress before President Obama leaves the White House. With this platform, Democrats have a unique chance to build a firewall against any last-minute attempts to ram this bad deal through after the election. We must speak out now to demand the DNC Platform Committee is clear and unambiguous in its opposition to the TPP.

We are at a critical moment in the fight against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Corporate lobbyists and the Obama administration want to ram the deal through a lame-duck Congress after the November election. Now is the time to raise our voices, talk to friends and family, and mobilize.

That's why Sen. Elizabeth Warren and CREDO have teamed up to produce this revealing video, in which Sen. Warren exposes a particularly dangerous and undemocratic provision of the TPP called "Investor State Dispute Settlement" or ISDS. Sen. Warren lays out in compelling detail how ISDS allows corporations to bypass traditional courts in favor of unaccountable, industry-friendly "arbitration panels."

The TPP was forged in secret and will be enforced in secret. We have a chance to build powerful resistance against any attempts to sneak the TPP through Congress if we raise our voices loud and clear. Please watch and share this video widely to get the word out about how destructive ISDS is, and why the TPP must be stopped. As Sen. We're Dwight Bullard and Kathy Hawken. At first glance, we don't have much in common.

I (Dwight) am a Democrat in the Florida State Senate representing the 39th District.

And I (Kathy) am a Republican in the North Dakota House of Representatives, proudly serving the 46th District since 1996.

In some ways, we couldn't be more different. But we do have a few key things in common: We're both advocates in support of reproductive freedom. And neither of us wants to see Donald Trump elected president.

Stand with pro-choice Democrats, Republicans, independents and everyone in between. Sign NARAL's pledge that you #WontVoteTrump in November.

Donald Trump is a man who has made it his job to demean and belittle women at every turn. He refers to women as "bimbos," "dogs," and "pigs." He tells them they would look good "on their knees."

Unsurprisingly, his low regard for women extends to his views on reproductive rights. He said women who choose abortion should be punished, and his list of potential Supreme Court nominees is filled with anti-choice extremists who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

We want a president who's a role model for our children, who believes women and men are equals who should have the same opportunities in life. These are the values we were taught—regardless of political party—and they are the values we strive to pass to the next generation. That's why we can't support Donald Trump.

No matter where we stand politically, we know Trump is a vulgar bully no one can be proud of and we know he is completely unfit to be President of the United States.

Neither of us—Dwight or Kathy—can say we'd be able to look our children, our neighbors or our friends in the eye and tell them we voted for Donald Trump.

We've taken the pledge that we won't vote for Donald Trump this November. Will you join us?

Yes, I'll add my name and stand up to bigotry, misogyny and hate.

Thank you for all you do for reproductive freedom, and all you've done and will to do to ensure Donald Trump makes it nowhere near the White House.

Subject: Star of David

Last weekend, Donald Trump tweeted a horrifyingly anti-Semitic image from a white supremacist website showing a Star of David over a pile of $100 bills.1

This is just the latest example of why it's not enough for Trump to lose. He needs to be crushed in a historic landslide so that Republicans never nominate a candidate on a Trump-style platform of bigotry again.

MoveOn is preparing one of the biggest summertime door-to-door canvasses in Ohio history—just before the Republican National Convention—to make sure Trump's bigotry backfires on him.

No Republican has EVER won the presidency without winning Ohio, and face-to-face conversations have proven to be the most cost-effective way to persuade voters. Will you chip in to make sure we have the resources we need to make it happen?

Donald Trump has said Mexicans were rapists and murderers. He said we should close the borders to all Muslims. He said that judges of Mexican descent cannot be trusted to judge him fairly.2

Time and again, he has shown himself to be a bigot, pure and simple. And yet most Republicans continue to faithfully endorse him as the candidate of their party. That's why it's so important that we not only defeat him, but that we defeat him with a large enough margin to put Trump's politics of bigotry in the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

That's where our historic door-to-door canvass comes in. We'll unify Ohioans of all walks of life, and every voter we can talk to is another obstacle to Trump's ambitions.

Studies have proven that face-to-face conversations are the most effective way to change people's minds and to motivate people who don't always vote to get to the polls.3,4 And during the Republican convention, voters in Ohio will be focusing on the election more than they have at any time this year.

What MoveOn and our partners accomplish in Ohio could be a model that we learn from and deploy in state after state for this election and beyond. So what we do know could have a huge impact beyond the Republican National Convention.

Organizers are on the ground in Cleveland, Youngstown, and Toledo, and we're seeing a surge of interest across the state. That means more clipboards to purchase, more voter pledge cards to print, more yard signs, more t-shirts, more coffee and donuts. Can you chip in?
