WSU pays $13K to settle lawsuit brought by former administrator

ByJosh Sweigart, Staff Writer

Update:

Wright State University's research arm has agreed to pay $13,209 to settle a lawsuit brought by former administrator Ryan Fendley.

In a settlement agreement obtained today by this newspaper, Wright State Applied Research Corporation denies claims brought by former advisor to the provost Ryan Fendley, who claimed WSU failed to pay him under a contract he had in addition to his full-time job.

Original story:

Wright State University's research arm and a former administrator fired by the school have settled a lawsuit that alleged Wright State Applied Research Corporation failed to pay him under a side contract he had in addition to his full-time job.

Ryan Fendley, former senior advisor to the WSU provost, filed the suit in January demanding $32,583 in damages plus interest and attorney's fees.

Greene County Common Pleas Court records show the case was formally settled Sept. 29, with each party agreeing to pay their own costs.

The specific terms of the settlement have not been released yet, though this news organization has requested a copy of the settlement agreement under Ohio public records law and will update this story when more information becomes available.

Fendley still has a separate lawsuit against the school filed in the Ohio Court of Claims. In that suit, he claims he was improperly terminated and is owed $249,000 in back pay.

Fendley was fired after the launch of an ongoing federal investigation into WSU's potentially illegal misuse of a federal work visa program. The school's former provost and a researcher have been on paid leave for more than a year during the investigation, and the school's top attorney was forced to resign.

Worried About "Stigmatizing" Cluster Bombs, House Approves More Sales to Saudi Arabia

Alex Emmons The Intercept

THE HOUSE narrowly defeated a measure that would have banned the transfer of cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia, but the closeness of the vote was an indication of growing congressional opposition to the conduct of the U.S.-backed, Saudi-led bombing coalition in Yemen. (The amendment sponsored by Rep. John Conyers)

The vote was mostly along party lines, with 200 Republicans – and only 16 Democrats – heeding the Obama administration's urging to vote against the measure. The vote was 204-216.

"The Department of Defense strongly opposes this amendment," said Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J., chairman of the House Committee on Defense Appropriations, during floor debate. "They advise us that it would stigmatize cluster munitions, which are legitimate weapons with clear military utility."

Cluster munitions are large shell casings that scatter hundreds or thousands of miniature explosives over large areas – often the size of several football fields. Some of the bomblets fail to explode on impact, leaving mine-like explosives that kill civilians and destroy farmland decades after a conflict ends.

Cluster bombs are banned by an international treaty signed by 119 countries, not including the United States. The United States opposed the treaty, and instead of signing it, adopted a policy that cluster bombs should never be used in concentrated, civilian areas.
Speaking in support of the amendment, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said Saudi Arabia has deliberately targeted civilians with cluster bombs. "Earlier this year, the Saudi-led coalition dropped cluster bombs in Yemen's capital of Sanaa, specifically targeting known civilian neighborhoods," he said. "One of the buildings hit was the al Noor Center for Care and Rehabilitation for the Blind, which also has a school for blind children. The destruction of the school and the injuries sustained by the children was unbearably gruesome."
The coalition has also used U.S.-produced weapons to destroy marketsfactories, and hospitals.

The vote came the day after one of the war's key architects, Mohammed Bin Salman, the Saudi deputy crown prince and defense minister, met with lawmakers to discuss, among other things, "the threat posed by Iranian aggression in … Yemen, and the broader Middle East."

Despite the defeat, human rights activists celebrated the closeness of the vote. "This is a big deal for the U.S.-Saudi Arabia alliance," said Sunjeev Bery, Amnesty International's advocacy director for the Middle East in the U.S. "More and more members of Congress are clearly getting tired of selling Saudi Arabia bombs when it is dropping them on civilians in Yemen."

The vote comes at a time when the U.S.-Saudi alliance is facing unprecedented skepticism in the United States. Although the Obama administration has refused to publicly condemn the use of cluster bombs, Foreign Policy reported that the White House has quietly placed a hold on a transfer of CBU-105 cluster bombs. A bipartisan group of lawmakers is trying to place a complete arms embargo on the kingdom, until it stops deliberately targeting civilians in Yemen.
The Saudis faced further loss of support Thursday when Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the deputy crown prince of the UAE, announced on Twitter that the "war is over" for Emirati troops. The UAE had previously been one of the most active members of the coalition.  (June 16, 2016)

DAYTON'S 3rd SRI SUNDERKAND KA MAHA AYOJAN

We would like invite you to join us for the Third Maha Ayojan of Sri Sunderkand is being organized at Dayton's Hindu Temple on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at 3:00pm.

At this immensely holy event being organized at an auspicious time just before Diwali, 101 families (and individuals) will take "sankalp" and enchant Sri Sunderkand together creating a unique and blissful experience for all present.

It is believed that enchanting of Sunderkand with devotion brings peace and eliminates troubles and all hinderances in life. When we worship and sing in group it is called Satsang. Satsang creates divine energy at the place where Satsang is being performed and for the devotees present at Satsand. Now think about divine energy which will be created when 108 families enchant Sri Sunderkand together (along with many other devotees). We hope that with your participation this event could be one unique and blissful experience for all.
This year the Maha Sunderkand has a very special purpose as we are collecting pledges to restore the beautiful and iconic Rajagopuram of our Temple. Please join us in support of this cause and register for the Maha Sunderkand as well as make a pledge!!!
So, register as soon as possible and be one of the main participants to take Sankalp for the Maha Sunderkand.
Venue : On Shanti Cultural Center, Dayton Hindu Temple
Date : October 15, 2016 Time : 3:00pm (Sri Sunderkand will take 2.30 hours, followed by mahaprasad and food)

(Note: We are seeking children to volunteer to help in taking sankalp by 101+ families. Pandit Ashwani Ji will educate the volunteer children about the rituals before the start of the Sunderkand. Maiden Flight a novel by Harry Haskell
Meet the Author and Book Signing

Tuesday, October 25, 2016 1:00 pm
Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center
16 S. Williams St. Dayton, OH

Maiden Flight is the true-life story of the Wright sister who in 1926 left her world -famous and intensely possessive older brother to marry newspaper editor Harry Haskell, the man she loved, and suffered the unhappy consequences.

An international celebrity in her own right, Katharine embodied the worldly, independent, and self-fulfilled New Woman of the early twentieth century. Yet she remained in many ways a Victorian. Torn between duty and love, she agonized for months before making her devastating break with Orville at age fifty - two.

Cast in the form of three interwoven first - person memoirs, Maiden Flight is imaginatively reconstructed from personal letters, newspaper reports, and other documents of the period-in particular, Katharine's lively and extraordinarily revealing love letters to Harry. In allowing Katharine to step outside of Wilbur and Orville's shadow, it sheds new light on the http://files.constantcontact.com/5e20f97f001/ccad3f87-2c7c-4d24-8878-f34540f5b3f7.jpgcentral role she played in their private lives, as well as on her often misunderstood contribution to their scientific work.

Above all, Maiden Flight celebrates Katharine's abundant store of what she called "human nature" - her lively and perceptive outlook on life, her great capacity for both love and indignation, and her acute and sometimes crippling self-awareness.

Harry Haskell is the grandson of Henry J. (Harry) Haskell, husband of Katharine Wright. He is the author of Boss-Busters and Sin Hounds: Kansas City and Its Star, The Early Music Revival: A History, and editor of The Attentive Listener: Three Centuries of Music Criticism. He lives in Guilford, Connecticut.
