Ben and Jerry here. The Ben and Jerry, founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. And we're writing you today about our simple request to Congress: Don't give rich folks—like us and Donald Trump—a tax giveaway and put the burden of paying for it on everyone else in America.

Republicans are currently rushing a tax scam through Congress that would be an enormous giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest Americans by putting the burden on everybody else. In Ohio alone, the richest 1% would receive $2,231,400,000 in tax breaks in 2018, if the proposed tax scam is passed. That's the equivalent of 461,014 health insurance premiums, 376,926 Pell Grants, or 21,154 infrastructure-related jobs in the state.1

We were fortunate and made a whole bunch of money making ice cream, and that's why we can say that slashing trillions from health care and education spending for regular Americans just to give people like us trillions more in tax breaks makes no sense. This tax scheme doesn't benefit everyone—it's designed to benefit guys like us (and those a lot richer than us)—and Trump. Because he'd be getting a tax break, too. (Can't say exactly how much of a tax break, since he won't show us his tax returns.)

So will you sign our petition to Congress that says:

Don't give massive tax cuts to corporations and the wealthiest Americans by taking trillions from everyone else. Medicare, Medicaid, education, job programs, and all of the other great things that the government pays for deserve MORE funding from the richest Americans, not massive cuts that would pay for tax cuts for corporations and the superrich.

Sign Ben and Jerry's petition

We have been vocal about wanting the government to reduce spending, especially on our military budget. But this latest Republican scheme doesn't address military spending; it just ravages essential programs to give rich folks more money.

We need to oppose this plan completely—not one penny in tax giveaways to the wealthiest Americans and corporations and not one penny in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and education.

Add your name now. MoveOn will deliver this petition to Congress, and we'll work with
elected officials who are Democrats, independents, and even Republicans
to stop this ridiculous tax giveaway scheme.

Subject: Tell Sen. Portman to vote NO on attacks on health care and middle class families

Senator Rob Portman may be the crucial vote in stopping Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, raise taxes on tens of millions of middle-class families, and give corporations, millionaires, and billionaires a massive tax break at the expense of Medicare, Medicaid, and education. Now that the House has passed its own version of this corporate giveaway, it's up to the Senate to stop it.

Can you call Sen. Portman now? You can say, "Please don't take health care from tens of millions of Americans and raise taxes on tens of millions more—vote no on the tax scam and health care repeal."

Here's where to call: Sen. Portman - (202) 224-3353

Then click here to tell us about your call—we want to share the numbers of calls MoveOn members are making to let politicians and the media know the depth of constituent opposition to this bill.

Just last Thursday, House Republicans voted for a morally atrocious bill—that hurts middle-income families, teachers, veterans, grad students, people with student loans, and folks with medical conditions—in order to pay for a trillion-dollar holiday gift to major corporations and wealthy Americans, including the Trump family and big Republican donors.

They passed this bill despite the fact that it has the support of only 25% of Americans.1 And now the Senate is considering a version that's even WORSE. The Senate bill would eliminate the individual health care mandate—an act that would unravel the ACA, leave more than 13 million more Americans without health insurance, raise premiums for everyone else, and serve as a backdoor repeal of Obamacare.2

If just three Republican senators oppose this outrageous plan, it can be stopped—and numerous Republicans have expressed concerns.

But "concerns" are not enough. Can you call Sen. Portman and ask him to commit to voting no on this bill?

Here's where to call: Sen. Portman - (202) 224-3353

Then click here to let us know how your call went.

The House vote was a disaster—but not unexpected. As with Trumpcare, the fight now goes to the Senate. MoveOn members and our allies have won fights here before, and we can do it again. But it will take all of us.

P.S. MoveOn members are mobilizing for a national week of action from November 29 to December 2, during what will likely be a critical moment in this fight. You can click here to host a local action in your area to put pressure on your senators or representative—or click to see events that are already planned across the country.

From: SPAN Ohio
Subject: Let's Talk, Speaker Rosenberger

Let’s Talk, Speaker Rosenberger!

The following letter was sent to Speaker Rosenberger concerning comments he made about our bill being introduced into the Ohio House. In addition to the letter, Speaker Rosenberger was invited to join the SPAN State Council at its next meeting on December 9th in Columbus.

------------------------------------------------------
Representative Clifford A. Rosenberger
77 S. High St.
14th Floor
Columbus, OH 43215

Mr. Speaker:

In an article in the Toledo Blade concerning introduction to the Ohio House of a single payer universal health care bill by Representatives Teresa Fedor and Bernadine Kennedy Kent, you were quoted as saying:

“I don’t think it’s a conversation that’s gone over well on a national [level], and I don’t think it will go over well here,” he said. “We’ve got to find a way to fix the current system in our country that President Obama put forward in Obamacare.”

While we agree that there is an immediate need to protect the health coverage of vulnerable Ohioans due to action on the part of the current administration in Washington, DC, we disagree that the conversation has not gone over well at the national level concerning single payer.

Currently, HR 676, The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, introduced by Representative John Conyers, has 120 co-sponsors, the most it has had in history. Also, the Medicare for All Act of 2017, introduced recently by Senator Bernie Sanders, has 16 co-sponsors. Again, this is the most in history.

The conversation is going equally well among the voters. A recent Harvard Harris poll found a majority support for single payer. A Pew poll conducted last July found:

A majority of Americans say it is the federal government’s responsibility to make sure all Americans have health care coverage. And a growing share now supports a “single payer” approach to health insurance, according to a new national survey by Pew Research Center.

Currently, 60% say the federal government is responsible for ensuring health care coverage for all Americans, while 39% say this is not the government’s responsibility. These views are unchanged from January, but the share saying health coverage is a government responsibility remains at its highest level in nearly a decade.

Among those who see a government responsibility to provide health coverage for all, more now say it should be provided through a single health insurance system run by the government, rather than through a mix of private companies and government programs."

I, for one, would love to have this conversation here in Ohio. Not only does this bill provide security to Ohio families, it is good for business as well. Our health care costs are double those of our economic competitors and these excess costs are tacked onto every product we try to sell in the world market.

It is time to set aside political ideology and have that conversation where we talk health policy based on evidence and experience. Let’s do that as we discuss the health care legislation from Representatives Fedor and Kent.

Feel free to copy this letter, sign your name, and send it to Speaker Rosenberger. Let’s start the conversation!

Subject: BREAKING: You helped beat the NRA and protect elephants!

Earlier this week, we told you about yet another favor Donald Trump granted to the NRA and the corporate gun lobby. He'd decided to reverse a ban on importing elephant trophies and ivory, extending the NRA's "more guns, more places" agenda to include the slaughter of elephants.

Just last night, thanks to your huge response and that of millions of other citizens, that decision was put on hold -- for now. We need to keep the pressure on to make sure the ban on endangered elephant trophies remains PERMANENT.

We're asking you to keep up the fight against the NRA and its allies by putting the Administration on notice that you're watching.

Please tweet this graphic to the Department of the Interior and tell them you won't stand for the slaughter of elephants.

The hold is only temporary while the ban is reviewed by Ryan Zinke, the Secretary of the Interior and a longtime ally of the gun lobby.

We can't let the ban on "trophies" and ivory be overturned. We know all too well what happens when the gun lobby gets their way and successfully pushes their agenda. And just like their efforts have led to more human deaths in America, their success on this issue would mean more dead elephants in Africa.

Finally — no beating around the bush. Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09) just introduced a one-sentence bill that gets right to the point: “It is the policy of the United States to not use nuclear weapons first.”

Preventing the United States from triggering a nuclear apocalypse isn’t just general common sense. It’s also urgently-needed protection from a president with an itchy Twitter finger and the sole authority to launch nuclear war.

Add your name as a citizen co-sponsor of Rep. Smith’s bill to prove that the American people support common sense, not nuclear apocalypse.

Trump is playing an international game of chicken with the most deadly weapons humanity has ever dreamed up. It’s time to cut him off.

P.S. We both know that common sense legislation doesn’t mean widespread support in Congress. This bill threatens the war lobby in Washington and their profit-driven agenda — so they’re eager to stifle the bill at the bottom of Congress’ to-do list. Trump's so-called "tax plan" will only benefit people like Trump and his favorite corporations -- those who want to further rig the economic system in their favor. They will be blowing up the deficit, which will mean less for schools, for infrastructure, for our health care.

It's up to all of us to stand up to this president, not just for impeachable offenses but also for building an economic system stacked against Americans.

  • A year into Trump’s presidency, Christians are facing a spiritual reckoning

Although not a particularly religious person, myself, I have many friends and family who are, and a considerable portion of these folks would even proudly claim themselves to be 'evangelicals'. While I consider all of these 'believers' to be deeply good people, many of them remain staunch political Conservatives and Trump supporters. Meanwhile, a number of others have grown increasingly distressed by the 'Deal with the Devil' which they feel many of their Christian brethren have made, and they've grown increasingly vocal about speaking out against it.

I've maintained a long-term and ongoing conversation with one such rebellious evangelical, an old friend and former coworker, who, along with her pastor/husband, has dared to try and dissuade their fellow brethren from their misguided political beliefs, an effort which has apparently cost them numerous friends and relationships, and yet they continue to speak out. This friend recently shared with me the following quote, something which her husband had posted online:

"Some people have repeatedly told me that my anti-Trump statements "divide the body of Christ." Such remarks assume that the body of Christ is naturally and rightly united under the GOP and Trump. That is a pernicious, blasphemous assumption."

What follows are links to a number of articles which this friend and I have shared between us, over the past week or so. As Jim Wallis states in his op-ed piece, in the Washington Post, "President Trump is an ultimate and consummate worshiper of money, sex and power. American Christians have not really reckoned with the climate he has created in our country and the spiritual obligation we have to repair it. As a result, the soul of our nation and the integrity of the Christian faith are at risk."

But how can evangelicals ever affect such a repair if they staunchly continue to remain completely blind to the moral/spiritual crisis which they, themselves, are largely responsible for having created??
    Peace -  Eric

Fort Detrick bioweapon? New 'Black Death' plague strain can kill in three hours as lethal disease goes 'airborne' | 16 Nov 2017 | An outbreak of the "Black Death" -- also known as pneumonic plague -- has been described as the "worst in 50 years" as numbers of recorded cases soar. The disease has already killed more than 171 people in Madagascar alone, with thousands more confirmed cases across the east African country. A local news crew following one health worker in the stricken city heard doctors informing residents that the new strain of the disease "can kill in three hours". Earlier this week, infection and immunity expert Dr Matthew Avison told Daily Star Online that the "extremely rare" disease has been "resilient" to antibiotics. A spokesman for the World Health Organisation admitted there were fears that this strain of plague -- which is now believed to be airborne -- could cause a global outbreak of the disease.

Plague spreads to dozens of health workers amid fears Madagascar can't contain black death | 16 Nov 2017 | The plague outbreak in Madagascar has spread to health workers, with dozens struck down by the black death. A staggering 82 health workers have been struck down by the disease -- about around four per cent of the total number of cases -- according to latest figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO)...There are also fears the disease could develop a resistance to the antibiotics being used to treat victims, which would likely see the number of cases surge. At least 2,119 cases of the plague have been reported and the death toll is continuing to rise with the disease having now claimed 171 lives, according to latest WHO figures.

And the status of the report has become a mystery...Multiple state police sources said that the report has been complete for more than a year and that officials are reluctant to release it, in part, because of criticisms about state police response and post-shooting actions. Then-Mst. Sgt. Erik Murray was assigned to do the after-action report within days of the massacre...In 2015, when The Hartford Courant first requested the report, Murray was transferred to headquarters and ordered to complete it. State police sources said that Murray completed a preliminary report that was shared with members of the Western District Crime Squad and other state police brass who were asked to make revisions around July of 2015. It is unclear what has happened to the report since those revisions were made.

It gave few other details about the omission.

'Smart Fire' Aircraft Lasers Likely Used on California Fires By aplaintruth.info | 05 Nov 2017 | Using the excuse that the county/state does not want to use taxpayer funds for debris removal and must require homeowners hand over any debris removal funds from their homeowners insur-nce is highly questionable because the President already approved debris removal funding under the Stafford Act. (See here.) Due to the severity of the destruction, it looks like the county/state may get 100% federal funding for debris removal rather than the normal 75%. IMO, those that sign the ROE are in for a major shock when they try to rebuild...

Corruption trial of U.S. Senator Menendez ends in mistrial | 16 Nov 2017 | The corruption trial of New Jersey's Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Menendez ended in a mistrial on Thursday, after the jury said it was hopelessly deadlocked on bribery, fraud and other charges. Menendez, 63, a longtime fixture in the state's political circles who first joined the Senate in 2006, was accused of accepting private flights, campaign contributions and other bribes from a wealthy patron, Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, in exchange for official favors. The hung jury was a victory for Menendez and a major setback for federal prosecutors in what was the Justice Department's first high-profile corruption trial since a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year limited its ability to bring such cases.

After initially apologizing without fully acknowledging her all of her accusations, he then released another lengthier, more contrite statement that contested nothing.

Leeann Tweeden is now a morning news anchor on TalkRadio 790 KABC in Los Angeles and posted her story in a lengthy post on the station's website...Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have each called on the Senate ethics committee to review Tweeden's account against Franken.

Cruz pulls support from Moore: Allegations merit 'criminal prosecution' if true | 13 Nov 2017 | Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday withdrew his support from Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore, saying allegations of sexual misconduct should be looked at by prosecutors. "As it stands, I can't urge the people of Alabama to support a campaign in the face of these charges without serious, persuasive demonstration that the charges are not true," the Texas Republican told reporters, according to a Texas Tribune reporter. "Both last week and this week, there are serious charges of criminal conduct that if true, not only make him unfit to serve in the Senate but merit criminal prosecution," he added.

Moore lashes out at Washington Post | 11 Nov 2017 | A defiant Roy Moore on Saturday adamantly denied accusations that he pursued romantic and sexual relationships with teenagers while he was in his 30s, instead charging that The Washington Post published "fake news" to advance its own political agenda. Speaking at a Mid-Alabama Republican Club event at the Vestavia Hills Public Library near Birmingham, the embattled Republican argued that the timing of the story just a few weeks before the special election for U.S. Senate was an attempt by the Post and his opponents to undercut his campaign.

House passes tax overhaul on party-line vote | 16 Nov 2017 | The House of Representatives passed its version of a tax overhaul Thursday, advancing a key Republican priority. The bill, called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, would cut the corporate rate to 20%; set up four tax brackets; and switch the U.S. to a so-called territorial tax system. The Senate Fin-nce Committee is working on a separate measure that differs in key respects, notably by repealing Obamacare's individual insurance mandate. The House bill passed 227 to 205.

'I misspoke on that,' McConnell told the New York Times on Friday, noting that it wasn't possible to guarantee that 'no one sees a tax increase.'

Although Enzer was the one to formally report Coons, the action was spurred by accusations from multiple students about Coons's repeated and intentional bigotry, according to Enzer...When information is reported to the Bias Response Line, an Office of Equal Opportunity employee listens to the report and determines any follow-up action, if necessary, the office said. If the office concludes that action should be taken, it relays the information to the specific school or department in which the original bias issue occurred."

Subject: GOP attacks ACA in tax bill! Sign the petition to STOP them

Earlier this year, the American people banded together and took to the streets to STOP Republicans in Congress from repealing the Affordable Care Act. It was a powerful victory for Americans’ health care and our democracy.

Well, the Trump administration’s response was to take executive action to sabotage the ACA and now Senate Republicans are following Trump’s lead, with a sneak attack they’re adding to their tax scam bill to destroy one of the foundational elements of health care reform, the individual mandate.

This move will end up denying 13 million Americans access to health care and will drive the costs up, through increased premiums, for many millions more.

The Senate is expected to vote on their version of the tax bill shortly after Thanksgiving. It’s a disastrous and devious plan that, in addition to including this latest health care attack, would -- like the House version -- shift more of the tax burden onto the middle class in order to pay for massive giveaways to corporations and the top fraction of the 1%.

Sign our emergency petition to STOP the GOP’s tax scam -- including the new attack on health care -- NOW>>

The House votes on their version of the tax bill TOMORROW and every American who cares about stopping this scam needs to speak out now.

Besides the attack on health care, both the House and Senate versions of the bill are a terrible deal for working families.

THE REPUBLICAN TAX SCAM WOULD...

  • give massive cuts to corporations and a relative handful of the very top most wealthy families, including the elimination of the Estate Tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax -- one of the very few things we know about Trump’s taxes is that with no AMT, Trump himself would have saved $31 million in taxes in 2005!
  • directly set up massive cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education, and other vital programs.
  • actually INCREASE taxes on millions of middle-class tax payers, especially in states like California, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. This is in addition to elements of the bill that hurt many middle-class households like capping mortgage interest and property tax write-offs, and cuts to personal exemptions.
  • increase the overall tax burden over 10 years on 46% of Americans earning under $100,000 a year.
  • INCENTIVIZE the offshoring of jobs via a specific tax giveaway to American companies with offshore subsidiaries.
  • reduce giving to charities in the US by BILLIONS, through changes in the tax code.
  • blow a massive hole in our national debt (as much a $1.5 trillion).

It’s easy to be baffled by why the GOP would pursue a tax plan that would cause such harm to the middle class and working families ... but the answer is that, after the failure of health care repeal, their Big Money donors are DEMANDING a legislative win or they are threatening to close their check books. And this tax bill gives them A LOT of the items on their regressive, right-wing wish list.
