Soliciting for Speakers at Ohio Mathematics Contest (OMC)

The annual Ohio Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Sinclair Community College (NOT at Wright State University anymore) in Dayton, Ohio.

During the time when students take the test from 2:00 pm, their parents are free until students finish their exams (at 3:00 pm for grades 4 through 8, and at 3:30 pm for grades 9 through 11). And then, students and parents will wait --- for the period when we score students’ answers, record their scores and determine winners --- until the Award Ceremony which will begin at 5:00 pm.

As you may be aware of, the Mathematical skills form a backbone knowledge on pursuing careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The purpose of the OMC is to stimulate interests in mathematics among upper elementary, middle and high school students and to recognize those who exhibit exceptional talents in Mathematical skills. To enrich these students of highly talented in Mathematics, as well as to enlightening their parents’ knowledge and interests, we have been offering seminars, workshops and/or demonstrations related to the STEM fields.

For this end, we need highly motivated persons to give:

  1. A few presentations to lower-grade (possibly to upper-grade) students
  2. A few presentations to upper-grade (possibly to lower-grade) students.

As far as concerning topics, you may choose any topic to promote parents’ knowledges and interests to guide their children to go into STEM fields and promote students’ enthusiasm in learning Mathematics. The time duration would be in 20, 30, 45 and 50 minutes depending on your preparations.

If you are interested in, please email me with (1) title, (2) a short abstract, (3) target audience among (i) upper-level students and (ii) lower-level students.

We still need a few more volunteers to help these tasks: (1) Greet and check-in students before the test (12:30 pm– 1:50 pm, (2) Proctor exams and grade papers (1:30 pm -4:30 pm) and (3) Help Award Ceremony (5:00 pm – 6:00pm). Please email me (Munsup.Seoh@wright.edu) with your choices of task to perform.

Please feel free to contact me (mseoh@siscom.net) if you have any further questions.

Subject: [WSU-OFFICIAL-L] DACA Update

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision yesterday to require a full appeal of the legal challenge regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is encouraging news for Dreamers studying and working at Wright State University. We are hopeful that a permanent and positive solution is reached as soon as possible.

For now, Wright State encourages all eligible students and employees to apply for renewal of their DACA protections as soon as possible. Legal support services are available in the Dayton, Ohio area to assist you with this effort at this service agency

We continue to hope that federal policymakers will create a solution for those impacted by the DACA program that reflects our shared American values of inclusion, opportunity and excellence.

Helpful information about renewal applications can be found here: Apply for Renewal

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.

Definition of Disability

For all individuals applying for disability benefits under title II, and for adults applying under title XVI, the definition of disability is the same. The law defines disability as the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA) by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s) which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.

Subject: FW: The Uptown Triangle Plan - Potential Use of Good Samaritan Hospital Site

FYI: This is a comprehensive plan provided by John Lumpkin of Lumpkin & Lumpkin Group, LLC.  This plan could be for the use of the impending vacant Good Samaritan Hospital site!  The Uptown Triangle plan is an excellent concept that incorporates a sports complex for our youth; it creates gateways, adding a mix of new housing stock along Philadelphia Dr. and Salem Ave, as well as adding small specialty retail to compliment and service existing residents and businesses, potentially a hotel and a 10 screen Cinema, and accompanying jobs.

The Uptown Triangle Plan - Potential Use of Good Samaritan Hospital Site

The Uptown Triangle is the comprehensive transformation of Northwest Dayton into a youth sports and entertainment district of the city. In the past 14 years significant investment that exceeds $65 million have been poured into this section of the city. The combination of public and private investment in the area has afforded us with an opportunity to capture this momentum and transform Northwest Dayton into an economic driver for the entire Dayton region.

The Uptown Triangle encompasses the businesses and neighborhoods that are inside and border the triangle formed at the convergence of Salem Ave, Philadelphia Dr., and W. Siebenthaler Ave.  This section of the city is home to diverse set of housing, amenities, infrastructure, and location to major modes of transportation to support the three phase plan that is the Uptown Triangle.

The Uptown Triangle is a comprehensive plan that begins by branding the area and creating a sense of “Place”. Creating this sense of “Place” is accomplished by addressing the appearance of the main corridors of the district by creating gateways, adding a mix of new housing stock along Philadelphia Dr. and Salem Ave, as well as adding small specialty retail to compliment and service existing residents and businesses.

Phase two will position Dayton to capture market share in the $7 billion and growing youth sports industry. The Uptown Triangle will construct a new youth sports venue that would cater to all sports in a state of the art indoor facility on the Good Samaritan Hospital site. This facility will connect to the existing garage and would be available for year round use and programming for the local community. This phase would also add hospitality to support the sports facility and bring something entirely new to this part of the city. A new 10 story hotel will not only house visitors but be the Beacon for the Uptown Triangle. This phase would also include additional housing along the Salem Ave corridor.

The third phase would develop the “entertainment” portion of the Uptown Triangle. The redevelopment of the old Elder Beerman site into a new “flex” retail space for small specialty shops and 10 screen Cinema. This amenity will cater to residents, local businesses, and travelers attending events at the new sports facility. An additional hotel will be constructed at this time to support the growing number of events that will be held in the Uptown Triangle.

Phase I

  • Branding this section of the city to establish “Place” with new and distinct street lighting and landscaping along main corridors to make the entire district walkable.
  • Reface the entire exterior of Miami Valley Golf Course with decorative lighting and sidewalks to restore the exterior beauty of this PGA golf course that is a hidden gem in the city.
  • Construction of two mixed use buildings with market rate apartments and small specialty retail at the corner of Hillcrest and Philadelphia to compliment the new Northwest Library.
  • Construction of 6 story mixed use tower with market rate condos, inside secured parking, and retail on street frontage of the Miracle Lane site on Salem Ave.

Phase II

  • Construction of a 5 acre youth sports facility attached to the garage at the former Good Samaritan Hospital site. This facility will host youth sports events year round as well as provide programming for the youth of west Dayton and adjacent communities.
  • Construction of a 10 story 115+ room hotel at the corner of Salem Ave. and Philadelphia Dr. to support travel teams that attend various tournaments throughout the year at the youth sports facility and other annual events that take place in the Dayton Region
  • Construction of mixed use building with market rate apartments and small specialty retail adjacent to Northwest Library on Hillcrest (Expansion of Phase I apartments)

Phase III

  • Construction of a 6 story mixed use tower with market rate condos, inside secured parking, and retail on former state liquor store property (Expansion of Phase I Condos)
  • Construction of second 10 story 115+ room hotel at corner of Salem Ave. and Benson Dr.
  • Remodel of old Elder Beerman site to 10 screen Cinema and Flex retail space.

There is a unique opportunity for us, as Daytonians, to do something bold to transform part of our city. Recent announcements, although disappointing, should be seen as opportunities to begin a new renaissance of our neighborhoods by bringing transformative economic development. Our goal is to make the Uptown Triangle a national destination for youth sports events and entertainment. The destination that is The Uptown Triangle will bring jobs, new housing, community programming, hospitality, entertainment, retail, and dollars from outside the Dayton Region. By enhancing the amenities that we already have, telling the story of the rich history of this area, and adding some new and vibrant amenities this will be the new place to live work and play in Dayton, Ohio.
