Soliciting for Speakers at Ohio Mathematics Contest (OMC)
The annual Ohio Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Sinclair Community College (NOT at Wright State University anymore) in Dayton, Ohio.
During the time when students take the test from 2:00 pm, their parents are free until students finish their exams (at 3:00 pm for grades 4 through 8, and at 3:30 pm for grades 9 through 11). And then, students and parents will wait --- for the period when we score students' answers, record their scores and determine winners --- until the Award Ceremony which will begin at 5:00 pm.
As you may be aware of, the Mathematical skills form a backbone knowledge on pursuing careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The purpose of the OMC is to stimulate interests in mathematics among upper elementary, middle and high school students and to recognize those who exhibit exceptional talents in Mathematical skills. To enrich these students of highly talented in Mathematics, as well as to enlightening their parents' knowledge and interests, we have been offering seminars, workshops and/or demonstrations related to the STEM fields.
For this end, we need highly motivated persons to give:
- A few presentations to lower-grade (possibly to upper-grade) students
- A few presentations to upper-grade (possibly to lower-grade) students.
As far as concerning topics, you may choose any topic to promote parents' knowledges and interests to guide their children to go into STEM fields and promote students' enthusiasm in learning Mathematics. The time duration would be in 20, 30, 45 and 50 minutes depending on your preparations.
If you are interested in, please email me with (1) title, (2) a short abstract, (3) target audience among (i) upper-level students or/and (ii) lower-level students.
We still need a few more volunteers to help these tasks: (1) Greet and check-in students before the test (12:30 pm– 1:50 pm, (2) Proctor exams and grade papers (1:30 pm -4:30 pm) and (3) Help Award Ceremony (5:00 pm – 6:00pm). Please email me (Munsup.Seoh@wright.edu) with your choices of task to perform.
Please feel free to contact me (mseoh@siscom.net) if you have any further questions.
Please recall that the early registration is now opened

Subject: [DAWN] Sanders Introduces Resolution to End U.S. Military Involvement in Yemen
Sanders, Lee, Murphy Introduce War Powers Resolution
to End Unauthorized U.S. Military Involvement in Yemen
Sens.. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) introduced Wednesday a bipartisan joint resolution to remove U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis in Yemen pursuant to the War Powers Resolution. The bill will force the first-ever vote in the Senate to withdraw U.S. Armed Forces from an unauthorized war.
As a result of the Saudi-led war, a child under the age of five in Yemen dies of preventable causes every 10 minutes. More than 10,000 civilians have died and more than 40,000 have been wounded in this war. Fifteen million people can't access clean water and sanitation. An estimated 17 million people – 60 percent of the total population – do not have reliable access to food and are at risk of starvation.
In 2015, the Obama administration, without consulting Congress, quickly deployed U.S. military forces to provide "logistical and intelligence support" to the Saudi coalition. U.S. military support for this intervention continues to this day. U.S. forces are coordinating, refueling, and providing targeting guidance and intelligence to the Saudi-led coalition, as confirmed recently by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.
Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that "Congress shall have power to.... declare war." However, U.S. participation in Saudi and Emirati hostilities against Yemen's Houthis has never been explicitly authorized by Congress as required by law.
Under the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the assignment of a member of the United States Armed Forces to "command, coordinate, participate in the movement of, or accompany" another country's military during a war constitutes the introduction of U.S. Armed Forces into a conflict. This definition indisputably applies to U.S. military activities in Yemen in support of the Saudi-led coalition.
In November, the House of Representatives passed, by a vote of 366-30, a resolution stating that "Congress has not enacted specific legislation authorizing the use of military force against parties participating in the Yemeni civil war that are not otherwise subject to" the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force or the 2003 AUMF in Iraq.
The Sanders-Lee-Murphy joint resolution is guaranteed a vote in the Senate in accordance with the procedures outlined in the International Security and Arms Export Control Act of 1976. It will be referred to the Foreign Relations Committee and if it hasn't been reported within 10 calendar days, it is subject to a motion to discharge. If reported or discharged from committee, the motion to proceed to the measure is privileged. The joint resolution is debatable for 10 hours on the Senate floor.
"We believe that, as Congress has not declared war or authorized military force in this conflict, the United States involvement in Yemen is unconstitutional and unauthorized, and U.S. military support of the Saudi coalition must end," Sanders said. "That is why today we are introducing a joint resolution pursuant to the 1973 War Powers Resolution calling for an end to U.S. support for the Saudi war in Yemen."
"With this resolution, Congress can re-assert power over foreign policy decision-making," Lee said. "It can authorize – or decline to authorize – military engagement and define U.S. national interests."
"Thousands and thousands of innocent civilians inside Yemen today are dying, and the United States is complicit," Murphy said. "This horror is caused in part by our decision to facilitate a bombing campaign that is murdering children, and to endorse a Saudi strategy inside Yemen that is deliberately using disease and starvation and the withdrawal of humanitarian support as a tactic. There is no legal authorization for the United States to be part of a war inside Yemen, and Congress cannot continue to be silent."
A similar resolution, introduced by Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Walter Jones (R-N.C.), has 50 cosponsors in the House.

Subject: End America's secret war in Yemen
For years, the United States has been enabling Saudi Arabia's brutal campaign driving more than 8 million Yemenis to the brink of famine. Our government gives Saudi Arabia bombs and planes. Our troops even deliver fuel to Saudi jets in midair while they conduct bombings.
Yesterday, Vermont progressive Senator Bernie Sanders and constitutional conservative Senator Mike Lee of Utah introduced a resolution to cut off U.S. support for this illegal war.
Win Without War is leading a massive coalition of progressive partners, millions of activists strong, to win this vote. But we're racing against the clock — and we need your help to get your Senators on board. Will you join our mass movement and urge the Senate to pass Bernie's resolution and end U.S. support for the war in Yemen?
Make no mistake: This is a United States war in Yemen.
With United States support, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war in Yemen and allowing diphtheria and cholera to ravage the country. A Yemeni child dies every ten minutes from famine or disease.
Yet this disastrous war was never authorized by Congress or debated by the public. It has nothing to do with fighting Al-Qaeda or ISIS. In fact, intelligence experts say it's making these groups stronger.
Bernie's resolution is our best chance to end U.S. support for this unconscionable, man-made crisis. But you only have a few days to make sure your Senators vote for this bill.
Tell the Senate: Stop the bombing and let food and medicine into Yemen to save the lives of millions. Vote yes on S.J.Res 54.

BREAKING ON NPR: "Supreme Court could GUT public sector unions"
Crushing unions is the Republican dream. We can't let it happen.
So we need you to sign this petition to STOP the Supreme Court from destroying unions >>
Republicans HATE workers' rights.
So they're demanding the Supreme Court crush unions once and for all. It's AWFUL!
If Republicans have their way, public sector unions will be CRUSHED.
Conservative fat-cats and the top 1% will be SO happy. And working progressives will be completely ruined!
We need your signature before the Court rules. So add your name now to STOP the Supreme Court from destroying unions:
Yesterday, Republican interests groups backed a case (Janus v. AFSCME) that will strip the remaining collective bargaining power of unions.
But Justice Sonia Sotomayor EXPOSED their awful plan:
A Republican victory would turn every state into a "right-to-work" state.
It would be the beginning of the end for unions everywhere!
We need Progressives to stand together and stop Republicans from destroying unions. Will you sign our petition now?

Subject: A Day of Action as Supreme Court Debates Unions' Futures
Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Janus v. AFSCME, an attack by wealthy, anti-union organizations on the voice of working people and their ability to negotiate collectively.
People from around the country rallied at the Court to let the world know that, regardless of the outcome of the Janus case, we will continue to organize for the public good and for our rights. This followed the Working People's Day of Action over the weekend, which called attention to our rigged economy and the need to defend our rights at work. It marked the fifty-year anniversary of protests by Memphis sanitation workers and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. against discrimination, low pay, and inhumane conditions that led to worker deaths. Share the graphic below on Facebook and spread the word.
The AAUP supports the right of working people, including faculty, to join together in unions as well as in traditional nonunionized AAUP chapters. Our collective voice is a powerful force to set standards and create better workplaces. Together, we fight for higher education and the critical role it plays in this country. Together, we defend academic freedom, shared governance, and due process protections. Standing together also makes it possible for us to negotiate affordable healthcare, a fair return on our work, and the ability to retire with dignity.
At issue in Janus is whether non-union members, who share in the wages, benefits and protections that have been negotiated into a collectively bargained contract, may be required to pay their fair share for the cost of those negotiations. Learn more about the Janus case and the amicus brief we filed.
Yesterday's oral argument went largely as expected. Many of the justices sharply questioned the attorneys. Justices Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg, and Kagan generally asked questions and advanced arguments that were supportive of the constitutionality of fair-share fees, pointing to their benefits and to the fact that unions and others had relied on the prior decisions of the Court. Justices Kennedy, Alito, and Roberts took the opposite approach. Justice Kennedy seemed particularly hostile, asserting that unions compel nonmembers to subsidize their political speech.
Because none of the justices appeared to depart from their expected position, today's oral argument reinforced the view that the Court will rule against us.
AAUP members are sticking together as One Faculty, One Resistance to fight for our collective voice, to promote safe and challenging learning environments, and to defend the important role our universities play in advancing the public good.
