Sam Dubose

Wed 29 Jul 2015 by abagond

sam-dubose

Sam Dubose (1971-2015) was an unarmed Black American man who was shot dead
by police in Cincinnati, Ohio after a Routine Traffic Stop.

ray-tensing
At 6.30pm on July 19th 2015 at Rice and Valencia streets near the University of Cincinnati (UC), Dubose was stopped by Ray Tensing, a White, UC police officer.

According to the police report:

“Officer Tensing stated that he almost was run over by the driver of the Honda Accord and was forced to shoot the driver.”

Officer Phillip Kidd said he saw the car drag Tensing and saw Tensing fire his gun.

Officer Eric Weibel said it appeared to him that:

“the back of [Tensing’s] pants and shirt looked as if it had been dragged over a rough surface.”

Dubose was stopped for a missing number plate on the front of his car. There was one on the back.

audrey-duboseAudrey Dubose, his mother, said of his past encounters with police

“He got stopped a lot, but he never tried to fight.”

She prayed to God for the truth to come out and hired Mark O’Mara, George Zimmerman’s old lawyer.

The Associated Press went to court under Ohio’s open records law to try to get Tensing’s body-camera video.

There were street protests.

But the city feared riots if it made the video public like the ones in 2001 after city police killed Timothy Thomas, also Black, also unarmed.

Within just ten days, Joe Deters, the county prosecutor, got a grand jury to charge Tensing with murder and had him arrested. Only then did he make the video public, on July 29th:

sam-dubose-video-still

The video shows Tensing repeatedly asking Dubose for his driver’s licence. Dubose is sitting in his car looking for it.

Then Tensing, telling Dubose to take off his safety belt, tries to open the car door! Dubose tries to keep the car door closed and starts his engine.

Tensing reaches into the car and tells him, “Stop!” and then shoots him in the face (fuzzed out in the video).

Tensing is not being dragged or run over. Nothing like that. Instead, he falls backwards as the car speeds away and crashes down the street.

joe-deters

In talking about the murder charge, Deters used words and phrases like:

“a pretty chicken-crap stop”,

“senseless, asinine”,

“He should have never been a police officer.”

“This doesn’t happen in the United States, okay?”

“I’m treating him like a murderer.”

and even:

“Could you imagine the outrage you would have if this was your kid, if this was your brother, over a stop like this?”

Amazing
stuff, coming from a White district attorney.

Nor is Tensing enjoying paid leave, the customary reward for killing unarmed Black people: UC fired him!

But what if there had been no bodycam video? Or what if Tensing had been a city cop, not some wannabe UC cop playing Rambo off campus?

In the US in 2015 so far, police have killed over 550 people.

This is only the fourth time anyone has been charged with a crime.

The Eye, Ear, and Mind Principle
August 3, 2015
By Raynard Jackson, Columnist

A few weeks ago I wrote a column titled, “Republican Presidential Candidates Lack Diversity.”  I called out Republican presidential campaigns for not having any Blacks on staff or as consultants.  I received several phone calls from various campaigns with them expressing their “disappointment” in my piece; they didn’t deny the facts of my piece, just the fact that I criticized Republicans.

These campaigns and the party, as usual, are missing the point.  While diversity within a presidential campaign is extremely important; the optics are even more important for 2016.  In the immortal words of my good friend John Travolta from the movie Swordfish, “What the eyes see, and the ears hear; the mind believes.”  I have dubbed this the eyes, ear, and mind principle (E.E.M.).

Can you name me one Black who has been publically validated by the leaders of the Republican Party?  I am speaking in terms of a Black who is known and respected both in the Black community, as well as the White community; a Black who is well regarded in both communities simultaneous.

Have you seen one Black get out of the car or off the plane with any of our candidates for president?  Have you ever seen one Black with House Speaker John Boehner or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell?

Since Blacks are not seen in the party, nor heard in the party; it is understandable why in the mind of Blacks we believe there is no place in the Republican Party for us; the E.E.M. principle in effect.

Issues of race will be one of the top three issues going into next year’s elections and the Republican Party is totally unprepared to deal with anything with a racial component.  Look no further than the anemic response our presidential candidates have given to issues like Ferguson, Baltimore, or South Carolina.  How do you expect these campaigns to adequately respond to these issues when they have all White staffs, consultants, and pollsters?

The National Urban League’s annual convention last week provided a great teachable moment for Republicans; but I doubt very seriously that they will learn from it.

I have been telling Republicans for years that they should never attend or speak to any of the major Black organizations unless they are given certain concessions.  I am speaking about groups like the National Urban League, the NAACP, the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), etc.

These Black groups are all very liberal in their orientation and rarely if ever have Black Republicans on any panels during their conventions.  So why would any Republican go there and give a speech, only to have the group’s members constantly criticize the Republican messages; if there are no Black Republicans on various panels to push back on this criticism then the speech is a total waste of time?

JEB Bush spoke at the Urban League’s conference last week only have Hillary Clinton thoroughly eviscerate Bush and Republicans and we had no one to refute Hillary’s bogus speech.  Bush’s speech said absolutely nothing of relevance to the audience or the Black community; and I can guarantee you that the speech was written by a white staffer with no input from any Blacks that understand communications and the Black community.  So Bush got what he deserved.

Republicans go to these groups simply out of fear.  They are terrified of being called a racist, so they go to these groups with hat in hand because they have no Blacks around them who are willing to take a hard line with these liberal Black groups.  If these groups refuse to have Black Republicans participate in their conferences, why would party leaders agree to speak?

The Black community is not hearing anything of any relevance to them from these presidential candidates specifically or the party in general.

If Blacks don’t see anything, or hear anything of relevance to us; then the mind will tell us Republicans don’t give a damn about our vote.
The Republican Party has a brand problem within the Black community and until they decide to deal with the eyes, ears, and mind they will never make any gains in our community.

Rand Paul deserves some credit for attempting to engage with the Black community, but his execution was horrible at best; incompetent at worst.

Isn’t it amazing that Republicans have done absolutely nothing to build relationships with the Black business community?
Not only are they an invaluable source for policy input; but they are also a great source for potential political contributions.

Even with the upcoming presidential debate on Thursday with FOX News, you have all white journalists asking the questions.  Why would FOX not at least have Kelly Wright (my fellow Oral Roberts alum) or Juan Williams as one of the questioners since they both work for FOX?
To my knowledge, I don’t think either party has ever had a journalist from a Black newspaper ever participate in a presidential debate.

Why?  There are over 200 Black newspapers in the U.S.  I hope the Republican Party will mandate a least one journalist from a Black newspaper be chosen to participate during one of the many upcoming Republican debates.

I will continue to write about these issues of diversity until the party finally begins to look like America.  But too often Republicans try to do the right thing; but they do it the wrong way.

Subject: Here’s to 50 years of Medicare & Medicaid

http://files.www.drsforamerica.org/issues/-50th-anniversary-of-medicare-and-medicaid/3.png

Fifty years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. Together, they cover nearly one out of every three Americans that’s more than 100 million people.

The Affordable Care Act has continued to open up the doors of care to millions more. However, leaders in 19 states have refused to expand Medicaid leaving nearly four million people without access to care. We have not forgotten about them.

Today, we delivered signatures from physicians and medical students across the country urging these governors to put down their partisan opposition and close the coverage gap. Our message: no matter how long it takes, we will stand up and speak out until everyone is covered.

Since Doctors for America began, we have fought to make sure our patients have access to the care they need.

When Congress threatened to cut billions of dollars from Medicaid in 2011, thousands of us spoke up to keep the program going. When the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that states had the option of whether to expand Medicaid, we worked together to tell state leaders that it is not acceptable for people to die for lack of care when the federal funds are already there and available to give them the care they need.

Like any program, Medicaid has its strengths and weaknesses, but it is working and remains a lifeline to care for millions of women, children and families. That is why we will not be silent until it is expanded in every state and strengthened for all.

Today, let's celebrate 50 years of progress through Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, the Affordable Care Act, and the hard work you put into making sure the most vulnerable among us have the resources they need to live a healthy life.  Post on Facebook, have a celebratory dinner, put up a sign, visit a senior center, or simply take a moment to appreciate how far we've come as a Nation in the past 50 years.

Let us redouble our efforts to make sure everyone in America has access to affordable, high-quality health care and the foundational resources they need to live a healthy life.

From: Michael Phelan, Social Security Works
Subject: Let's build on 50 years of Medicare

Fifty years ago, Americans came together to pass Medicare--a health insurance program that built on the success of Social Security.

This 50th birthday of Medicare is a time to appreciate all of Medicare's contributions to retirement, economic and health security, and recognize that Medicare is the beginning of a journey--not the end. Medicare has reined in health care costs, ensured older adults and people with disabilities broad access to doctors and hospitals, promoted their health financial security and fostered transparency, accountability and innovation throughout the health care system. After 50 years of proven success, it's time to make Medicare available to everyone
.

Please sign this petition today – tell Congress you support Medicare and want it to be available to people of all ages.

Expanding Medicare to give everyone the choice of a public health insurance option will reduce health care costs by creating competition with commercial insurers. A public option will also give consumers more coverage choices and greater control over their health care.

Robert Reich

Click here to watch Robert Reich's short video on how Medicare for all is the solution to health care reform.

We’ve already seen incredible success with the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare as it’s often called. Despite the relentless attacks by extremist Republicans, Obamacare is working: more Americans have health coverage than any time on record, people can no longer be dropped by an insurance company because of a pre-existing condition like asthma or high blood pressure, women can no longer be charged more for their coverage, 76 million people are benefiting from preventive care, and health care price inflation is at its lowest rate in 50 years.

Urge Congress to expand Medicare for all, so that everyone in America has a public health insurance option.

This is why I dislike two of the four Koch brothers so much. Think of all the Senators and Representatives those two have bought to do their evil deeds.   Now think of all the Governors and members of the State Legislatures they have bought.   Next throw in two SCOTUS Justices who have in all likelihood also been bought.   Thanks Citizens United.   You did this country proud.  DUH!!  Make that totally screwed this country.

Long live pollution of our planet.   Long live droughts and floods.   Long live Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Cyclones.   Especially long live Tornados in this country.   The worst devastation I have ever seen from a tornado was from the one that hit Xenia Ohio in 1974.   And Xenia has been hit by other Tornados since we have been here.   Xenia was also hit by Tornados before we came to Ohio.   The Native Americans warned the early settlers about the devil winds that hit Xenia.

http://wdtn.com/2015/04/03/xenia-tornado-a-vivid-memory-41-years-later/

I was TDY to Battle Creek Michigan with a gaggle of people from Wright-Patterson when the Tornado hit Xenia.   A few of those people lived in Xenia.   Were they ever upset because they couldn’t find out a thing?   No calls could get through.

The worst lightning storm I have seen in my 77 years, I saw that night in Battle Creek, MI.   Battle Creek is about 250 miles from Xenia so you can imagine the intensity of the storm that hit Xenia and other places in OH, IN and KY.   Look it up.

This is a good read to get a better feel about the TPP. Did you note that the House blew town before voting on the TPP.  That was done so there was no record of which way the Congressmen voted.  That was done to avoid being asked embarrassing questions at "Town Hall" meetings back home.  I expect people, at least the non sheep, are becoming more interested in the TPP. I expect the Senate to follow suit next week.

What Are Foreign Military Bases For?
by David Swanson - 13 July 2015

If you're like most people in the United States, you have a vague awareness that the U.S. military keeps lots of troops permanently stationed on foreign bases around the world. But have you ever wondered and really investigated to find out how many, and where exactly, and at what cost, and to what purpose, and in terms of what relationship with the host nations?

Petition to Pope Francis that anyone can sign

A few days ago I  forwarded to you a petition to Pope Francis, since he is scheduled to visit the U.S. in September.   It was originated by a Catholic group inviting  anyone who is  a "Catholic or a Christian"  to  sign it.

SINCE THEN THERE HAS BEEN A BIG CHANGE!

The national peace group, Roots Action, headed by David Swanson now is also circulating the petition, but anyone can sign it.

I ask you to add your name to this important issue. Every name that is added builds momentum around the campaign and makes it more likely for us to get the change we want to see.

Will you join me by taking action on this campaign?

Subject: Billy Graham's son wants to ban Muslims from U.S.

Franklin Graham once hinted that President Obama might secretly be a Muslim, and accused him of allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to infiltrate his administration. Now, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham has reached a new low.

Graham posted a hateful Facebook screed calling for all Muslims to be banned from immigrating to the U.S. and insisting they be treated the way America treated the Japanese and Germans during World War II.

Next month, Graham is scheduled to headline revivals in Birmingham, Alabama, and Oklahoma City. Local churches -- including Methodists and Episcopalians -- are lending support to Graham by holding classes and hosting other events aimed at turning people out to hear him preach.

We need to make it clear that it's unacceptable for mainstream Christians and churches to cooperate with Franklin Graham.

Tell Birmingham and Oklahoma City churches: Don't participate in Franklin Graham revivals.

Planned Parenthood does invaluable work providing healthcare for women, and defending women’s rights. When Republicans scheme with anti-abortion extremists to defund them, they’re not just threatening women’s lives, they’re also aggressively striking at one of the most important advocates for women in the country.

Democrats have to push back now. They need to go on the record in support of Planned Parenthood’s work and speak out to discredit these orchestrated attacks. And they must block any attempts to undermine or defund Planned Parenthood in Congress.

Defend Planned Parenthood against Republican attacks

On Monday, the Senate is going to vote on defunding Planned Parenthood.

A little more than two weeks ago, a group of extreme anti-abortion activists released the first in a series of secretly obtained videos designed to discredit Planned Parenthood. The videos have all been widely discredited, but that has not stopped Republican politicians from using them as an excuse to defund Planned Parenthood.1

Republicans Senators are clearly willing to throw women and their families under the bus in order to score points with their extremist base. They need to be reminded that they and their party will have to answer to the hundreds of thousands of people who stand with Planned Parenthood if they choose politics over women’s health.

More than 158,000 people have already signed on to this petition. We’re going to deliver the petition signatures to every Republican Senator on Monday before the vote, so please sign our emergency petition today to stand with Planned Parenthood.

Can you add your name today to tell Senate Republicans not to play politics with women’s lives? Click here to sign the petition.

Planned Parenthood provides vital health care services to millions of women a year. With women’s access to health care under constant assault by the radical right, Planned Parenthood is often the only place where women can go to get cancer screenings, prenatal care, STD testing, birth control and abortions.

The fight against Planned Parenthood is not just about Republicans trying to take away women’s access to abortion and other reproductive healthcare. They also want to destroy an institution that fights every day for women’s rights.

The extremist anti-abortion group behind last week’s video released a fourth video on Thursday, and have promised that there are more to come. They’re using a tactic well-known in the right-wing playbook — using selectively edited, secretly obtained video to discredit vital progressive institutions and provide political cover for Republicans in Congress to destroy them. They have been after Planned Parenthood for years, but each time they’ve attacked, activists have pushed back, and won.

Planned Parenthood is fighting back on every front.2 More than 150,000 CREDO activists are standing with them. Can you add your voice today?

If you haven't been paying attention to the attacks on Planned Parenthood, now is the time. Because Planned Parenthood is in serious trouble.

The first major vote to defund Planned Parenthood is scheduled for tonight. And after two weeks of relentless smears, it's now being reported that Senator Joe Manchin—a Democrat who previously supported Planned Parenthood—has now switched sides and become the first Democrat to say he'll vote to completely defund Planned Parenthood.1

This is bad—very bad. Until now, it's been the same old conservative Republicans attacking Planned Parenthood. But if we start losing Democrats who used to be on the right side of this issue, then all bets are off. Will you chip in?

Two weeks ago, the idea that Planned Parenthood could get defunded was laughable. Now there's no question it could happen.

Today's vote is the latest and most serious step in what's shaping up as a months-long campaign to destroy Planned Parenthood. Even if we can stop the very worst defund Planned Parenthood bills in Congress, we're seeing former allies propose so-called "compromise" bills that would still impose damaging cuts.2 And we're seeing state-level efforts to attack or fully defund Planned Parenthood popping up all over the country.3

This isn't just a crisis for Planned Parenthood. It's an attack on the 2.7 million women and men who rely on Planned Parenthood each year for basic health care.4

Make no mistake: When a woman asks that fetal tissue be donated for medical research, Planned Parenthood is 100% right to honor those wishes. It's legal, it's ethical, and it's essential for finding life-saving cures for diseases like Parkinson's.

The good news is that Planned Parenthood's public support remains rock-solid. Millions of Americans trust Planned Parenthood based on firsthand experience, and 63% still oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.5

The key is to send a strong message to wavering senators and state legislators that they will be held accountable by the majority of voters who trust and support Planned Parenthood. We need to track these attacks over the coming months and push back against them as we've already begun doing—with phone calls, tweets, online ads, and more.
