Greater Miami Valley Computer Science Circle

Dear
Miami Valley Residents,

The
Greater Miami Valley Computer Science Circle (GMVCSC) for high school students and advanced level middle school students is now in its second year.  We have students from all over the Greater Dayton and Cincinnati areas. GMVCSC has classes from 10AM to 12PM on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month in Room 170 of the Mathematical and Microbiological Sciences (MM) Building on the main campus of Wright State University.

Topics
for this semester include: an introduction to problem solving, computational science education and career, Python and Java programming, and more. (See Fall 2016 Class Schedule copied below!)

Our
volunteer instructors come from both academia and industry, teaching over 40 students last Spring and Fall semesters. We however need more volunteer instructors because we would like to divide the circle into two groups based on the level of mathematical knowledge. Please contact us (Dr. Lining Qi at qiln@yahoo.com or Dr. Munsup Seoh at munsup.seoh@wright.edu  if you are interested in helping the Circle by giving talks/workshops/etc.

If
your or your friends' children are interested in joining one of our circles, please email Dr. Lining Qi at qiln@yahoo.com or Dr. Munsup Seoh at munsup.seoh@wright.edu.

Thank
you very much for your attention to this letter,

Munsup
Seoh, Ph.D., and Lining Qi, Ph.D.

Greater Miami Valley Math Circle

Dear Miami Valley Residents,

The Greater Miami Valley Math Circle (GMVMC), in its 3rd year of operation, is an organization dedicated to helping the students of the Miami Valley and beyond. Our math circle focuses on mathematical enrichment and problem solving while also providing a few competition opportunities. We have three levels: Beginning (Grades 5-7), Intermediate (Grades 7-9), and Advanced (Grades 9-12 with completion of Algebra I). Faculty come from local school districts, area colleges and universities, private industry, and local government. We have students from all over the area and beyond; we are truly a "Greater Miami Valley" organization!

We meet from 10:30am-Noon every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month during the school year (September-early May) in the Mathematical and Microbiological Sciences (MM) Building on the campus of Wright State University.

Enrichment topics include age-appropriate treatments of logic and proof, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, algebra, statistics, and more. We cover topics not usually seen in school mathematics and reinforce and explain things learned in school as well. Competition opportunities include the American Mathematics Contest 8th Grade Test (AMC 8 Test) for our younger students each fall and the Ohio Mathematics Contest (OMC) for all of our students each spring.

If you would like to inquire about enrolling in our group, please contact either Mr. Erik Potts (at erik.potts@wright.edu) or Dr. Munsup Seoh (at munsup.seoh@wright.edu). Space is limited! If there is not space for your child at the time you email us, then you will be placed on our waiting list. Available spaces will be offered to those on our waiting list first, with priority given to those on the list longest.

If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering with our organization, then please let us know as well! We will be happy to talk with you and see where your skills and talents can be best used!

Lastly, please let us know if you have any questions and see the below flyer about our group. We thank you in advance for your time and consideration in reading this letter and wish you well!

Sincerely,

Dr. Munsup Seoh and Mr. Jason Knapp
Co-Founders, Greater Miami Valley Math Circle

Subject: [OFFICIAL-L] Concealed weapons still prohibited on campus

The new state law, HB 48 that was adopted this week continues to prohibit the carrying of a concealed weapon on university and college campuses including on Wright State University's Dayton and Lake Campuses. The bill permits university and college boards of trustees to make an exception in policy. At this time, Wright State University policy does not permit the carrying of concealed weapons on campus.

21st Century Peace Literacy Foundation

From: Rabbi Joseph Berman, Manager of Government Affairs and Grassroots Advocacy
Subject: we have to respond

It's the first week in session for the 115th US Congress, and what's top of the agenda? Based on the vote they just took: promoting Israel's endless settlement expansion.

Your member of congress, Rep. Mike Turner, voted in support of that rightwing agenda. Make sure they hear from you.

Two weeks ago the Obama administration did something that was long overdue: for the first time in nearly a decade, the US did not stand in the way of the United Nations affirming the international consensus that Israel's settlement constructions violates international law.

While we know that halting settlement construction is a necessary but insufficient step toward Palestinians having full rights and equality--and abstention is far from a ringing endorsement of rights for all--the US abstention in the UN Security Council (UNSC) was still a welcome change.

But now legislators are proving they will fight even incremental progress toward justice and peace with everything they've got. Indeed, they voted to pass House Resolution 11 this afternoon, condemning even the mild anti-settlement move of abstaining from the UNSC resolution.

80 members of congress voted no to the resolution, standing up against that agenda, but your representative voted yes to Israel's continued impunity.

We need to tell them we will resist every step of the way.

We're not surprised that the 115th congress is moving so fast to back Israel's disregard for human rights and international law. We know that the new US administration and congress is going to be pursuing retrograde, racist, rights-abolishing policy from every angle.

The fights ahead are going to be epic: there is already legislation pending about moving the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, giving a green light to Israel's annexation of the city. Trump's pick for Ambassador to Israel is David Friedman, a settlement funder who is eagerly awaiting his move to Jerusalem and aligned with the farthest right wing of Israeli politics. Indeed, next week confirmation hearings begin for Trump's cabinet of horrors, spelling disaster for Palestinians as well as for working people, people of color, women, queer and trans people, immigrants, and Muslims.

The fight ahead is going to be constant, and it's going to take all of us.

We believe those 80 no votes represent the thousands of letters to the editor, phone calls, and emails, so many of our members have been sending over the last few days. And even more, those no votes represent the vast and growing-by-the-minute Palestinian-led movement for justice, liberation, and equality, and the way that our movement is and will hold elected officials accountable to a vision of the future where all are free.

Organizing works. And that includes holding Rep. Mike Turner accountable. Act now.

Subject: Help ATU Members Avoid A Strike

I am sending this message today because Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1385 workers in Montgomery County need your help in order to avoid a strike!

Our sisters and brothers have been trying for years to get a fair agreement with management that will provide similar wage increases as management received, affordable health insurance, more protections on the job and to open an avenue of communication between management and members which will only improve the already great service provided by the RTA.

Yet RTA CEO Mark Donaghy doesn't want to do what is right and fair. ATU 1385 members are not asking for any more money than the city workers and RTA management received and want to have a real voice to provide input into making RTA even better.

Workers and management are meeting the morning of Sunday, January 8, which is about 15 hours before the strike deadline of midnight Monday, January 9.

You can make your voice heard by emailing CEO Mark Donaghy and tell him to keep the RTA running. Tell him management is no more important than the drivers and mechanics and everyone should be treated fairly. Tell him drivers need to have a voice in safety for both passengers and workers and should have a seat at the table to help make those decisions.

Sisters and brothers, you know better than anyone that being ready to go on strike is not a decision that comes easy. We need to show our support for these hard-working members of ATU 1385 so please email CEO Mark Donaghy right now and make your voice heard.

On responding to the message from  Tim Burga (the President of Ohio AFL-CIO), a subscriber of MPEN e-Newsletter wrote a short e-mail to Mark Donaghy (the CEO of Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority). You might want to do likewise. The e-mail response is immediately below.

I am writing in support of the RTA employees represent byAmalgamated Transit Union local 1385.

Even though those good people may not wear suits and ties to work, they deserve to be treated fairly. In particular, the drivers need to have a voice in the safety of passengers and workers alike. They should have a seat at the table — meaningful input that is heeded by management — when safety decisions are made. Most fundamentally, you need to keep the RTA running, and to do so by treating your organized employees with dignity and respect.

Thank you kindly for your attention to this message.
