2017 MLK Celebration

Dear Greater Miami Valley Residents,

Thousands of people marched in a 10-below-zero wind chill from West Third Street through downtown Dayton in January to honor the memory of Dr. King-clergyman, activist and prominent leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial discrimination.

The celebration also featured an interfaith worship service, an interfaith prayer breakfast and an evening banquet featuring an address by civil-rights pioneer Johnny Ford, the mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama.

“Still Standing” is the theme for this year’s event, which will feature The Rev. Joan Brown-Campbell, the first clergywoman to lead the National Council of Churches and to direct the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches. Over the years, the Rev. Campbell has worked with Dr. King, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

As you know, the Martin Luther King (MLK Dayton) Planning Committee was established under the leadership of Mr. Anthony Whitmore, Civil and Human Rights Activist and retired RTA Executive. It is comprised of presidents or their designees of owned businesses, church leaders, community agencies, non-profit organizations and youth.

Our mission is to inspire citizens and act on the vision of social justice influenced by the legacy of Dr. King. We want to continue to advance and promote the dream.

We look forward to celebrating with you and hundreds of other citizens, community agency members and corporate leaders of the Miami Valley.

Please review website weekly for updates,
