No need to wait for Trump's inauguration. Our basic civil rights - and the Palestinian freedom movement - are under attack in Ohio today.

Monday night, we found out that state legislators were sneaking a bill into the House that adds a specific clause in all state contracts forbidding boycotts of Israel.

Click here to send an email your Senator now to tell them to vote NO on HB 476.

This isn't the first round of this fight. In May, 40 activists from around the state testified in opposition to the bill during the House committee hearing, raising unprecedented opposition. Because of the opposition we raised, 4 different editorials from newspapers in major cities around the state raised serious questions about this bill as an affront to boycott and divestment as free speech.

But now it's coming back even worse. They snuck in an ammendent that doubles the amount the state can invest in foreign bonds - but with technical limitations that actually only qualify Israeli bonds. So we're being attacked on both sides: on the one hand, the movement for Palestinian human rights is being undermined, on the other, investment in the Israeli government is being incentivized.

All this, and at the Federal level the Senate just passed the so-called "Anti-Semitism Awareness Act" - that claims to fight antisemitism by defining criticism of Israeli policies as officially antisemitic.

We can't let our rights to protest Israeli policy get taken away, and have to stand up starting in Ohio.

And I think we can. When the bill was rushed through the state House Tuesday, 13 representatives opposed it - and for this political climate, that's major.

Now, we are watching closely as the state leadership is working to get it passed through the Senate, which could happen literally any day now. We need to tell every Senator that their constituents reject this bill and support boycott and divestment as a constitutionally protected right! This bill would create a chilling effect for BDS and Palestinian rights advocacy around the state.

Tell your Senator that you oppose HB 476 now!

If you would like to get more involved, such as testifying during a Senate committee hearing (if we are able) or taking other actions to stop this bill, get in touch with us! Here is our contact info:

As the incoming administration promises to incite racist and Islamophobic violence in our communities and crack down on political resistance in this country, it's up to people like you and me to protect and lead justice movements.

I hope you'll take action to protect your right to protest unjust policies, everywhere.

Subject: Republicans may be backtracking

Immediately after Election Day, Paul Ryan and Republicans announced plans to destroy Medicare as soon as the new Congress convenes.

This week, President-elect Trump joined the war on Medicare when he announced his nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Rep. Tom Price, a consistent voice to dismantle Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Social Security Works members immediately rallied to defend Medicare and it appears several Republican Senators are getting nervous.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said this week, "I think we should leave Medicare for another day."

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said, "It's just too much to bite off."

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), chair of the Senate Finance Committee, said "It might be way too much, but we'll have to see."

Let's slam the door shut on the Republican plan to destroy Medicare. Sign the petition to demand that Congress drop its crusade to turn Medicare into a voucher program.

Activism works! Together let's protect Medicare from Paul Ryan and Republicans in Washington.

YOUR FIVE MINUTE ACTION OF THE DAY!

Reposted from private group as an action item from a trusted source:

"I just got off the phone with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) - (202-512-5500) in support of Senator Warren's request to audit the President Elect's finances for conflicts of interest. I asked the person who answered what the most effective way to be sure my support counted. She said to email a new address set up specifically for this issue, as well as the two administrators. Their names are:

·         Katherine Siggerud -email: siggerudk@gao.gov

·         And Timothy Minelli -email: minellit@gao.gov

·         As well as: congrel@gao.gov.

Suggested text of the emails is one sentence: 'I'm writing in support of Senator Elizabeth Warren's request for an audit of our incoming President Elect's finances, to prohibit conflicts of interest that would prevent him from carrying out the responsibilities of the office without corrupt influence.'"

Petition to Facebook not to censor documentation of civil liberties or human rights violations.
------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Mara Schechter, Daily Kos
Subject: Facebook is cooperating with police to censor activists (please read)

Facebook has been complying with law enforcement to censor activists and human rights documentation, including videos of police violence.

Facebook's videos and platform are powerful tools to document human rights abuses. And we'll need them more than ever under the new presidential administration.

Sign now to tell Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg:
Don't censor human rights documentation, especially content that depicts police brutality.

Activists have reported various incidents of Facebook's censorship or compliance with police, including: censoring accounts of activists covering the civilian uprisings in Charlotte, NC; the removal of live footage of water protectors against the Dakota Access Pipeline; and reports that Facebook sent data to help police track and surveil protesters in Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD.

This sets a dangerous precedent. Trump's administration will no doubt increase law enforcement's requests of Facebook. Facebook needs to stand firm now and be accountable to the public, including by clarifying its policies on removing content at the request of government actors. Facebook cannot be an arm of the police.

Sign the petition to tell Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg:
Before Trump comes into office, address public concerns about Facebook complying with law enforcement to censor human rights documentation.

Facebook has come under fire lately for NOT censoring fake political news, which may have contributed to the awful results of the presidential election. However, real news, powerful news that depicts human rights abuses, is being broken and then shared on Facebook. The least Facebook can do is stop complying with law enforcement to censor such content.

Already, with Trump coming into office, movements against entrenched power are at risk of being silenced. Trump and his administration will not respect the First Amendment. Facebook must not assist them in violating freedoms of expression.

Now more than ever, we need all the tools we can to protect marginalized voices, particularly voices of people of color.

Sign the petition to tell Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg:
Do not censor human rights documentation. Do not act as an arm of the police, especially under the new administration.

Instead of fighting actual anti-Jewish hatred, Senators want to slander students who organize for Palestinian human rights as antisemites. We need to raise our voices -- now!

CALL NOW

Hate crimes against Muslims, people of color, and white Jews alike have skyrocketed in the weeks since Trump's election.

So you might think it's a good thing that an "Anti-Semitism Awareness Act" is being rushed to the Senate floor. But this bill's title is wildly misleading. What it would actually do is specifically classify any criticism of Israeli policies on a college campus as officially antisemitic.

It doesn't raise awareness about anti-semitism: it scapegoats student activists and faculty who are organizing for Palestinian human rights.

We need to call our Senators right now, and tell them we won't accept this. They need to oppose the ASAA today.

To be clear, if this bill passes and you or I walk onto a college campus and say "The US needs to end military aid to Israel," we will officially be antisemites in the eyes of the government.

This bill doesn't target Steve Bannon, Trump's racist chief strategist. Or Richard Spencer and his "hail Trump" rally. Or the people who have defaced synagogues and threatened Jews in the past month.

This bill, under the cover of fighting antisemitism, is targeting the diverse group of students, including many Muslims and Arabs, who organize for Palestinian human rights. So we have to show that Jews and allies stand against it -- click here to call the Senate.

The bill is being put forward by Senators Bob Casey and Tim Scott, who apparently think that fighting campus activists is the best way to spend the last 61 days we have to get ready for the Trump administration.

And it's being supported with incredible hypocrisy by supposed "leaders" of the Jewish community like the Jewish Federations of North America - who have refused to condemn real antisemitism from the Trump team but are jumping at the chance to attack Palestinian human rights activists.

Here's their "logic": if Jews want our real concerns about antisemitism addressed, what we should accept instead is censorship about Palestinian human rights.

I believe in fighting antisemitism and Islamophobia, and I believe in Palestinian human rights. If you do too, help make a strong show of force against this brazen attempt to silence our movement. Click here to call the Senate now.

Our opponents are hoping we'll be too exhausted and too depleted from every other fight we're taking on that we won't notice, and won't fight back. They're hoping Islamophobia is already so entrenched in our society that no one will insist they lift a finger to fight it. They're hoping we are so confused, scattered, and weak that we'll accept the terrifying proposition that our government can protect us from hatred by prohibiting criticism of government policy.

No way. Let's flood the Senate with calls right now. Click here to call Senate leadership now. We'll connect you to a series of Senate offices that have the power to ensure that the legislation is not rushed through the Senate, no dialing required.

Thank you for speaking up,

P.S. This perfectly illustrates why JVP needs to grow. This news broke at 10pm last night - literally dragging some of our staff out of bed. Help us make sure we have the resources we need to fight with a gift today.

Donald Trump's bold-faced LIE that "millions voted illegally" serves a single purpose: To justify passing harsher voting laws that make voting MORE difficult for minority voters.

We REFUSE to allow that to happen. Please read our open letter, and make a donation today to sign on >>

------------------------
Dear President-Elect Trump,

I am SICK of your lies. Your latest lie that "millions of people voted illegally" is not just brazenly FALSE -- it's downright dangerous.

If this is how you plan to justify passing disgusting voter suppression laws to make it harder for minority Americans to vote -- hear me when I say:

I will NOT allow you to defile our Democracy.

Today, I pledge to do everything in my power to get MORE Democrats out to vote in our elections.

Mr. Trump, America has grown accustomed to your lies. And while the media may have stopped holding you accountable -- I have not.

The lie of voter fraud has been used by your Republican cronies time and time again to build barriers to the ballot box for minority voters. In fact, laws that demand specific forms of ID have prevented thousands of African Americans from voting in 2016.

Look -- you have spent your entire Presidential campaign alienating minorities.

I will not allow you to silence their voices.

Today, I pledge to defend the right to vote for ALL Americans -- not just those that got you elected.

Subject: THIS is how we stop Steve Bannon

There is going to be a misogynist and known white supremacist in the White House--unless we force Republicans in Congress to speak out.

Right now, all eyes are on Speaker Ryan and the Republicans. Will you call them to stop Steve Bannon from getting to the White House?

The outcry against Donald Trump's misogynist and white supremacist pick, Steve Bannon, has reached a fever pitch.

Right now, Democrats in Congress are loudly opposing Bannon's appointment as Trump's chief strategist, the streets have erupted in protest, and Republicans are nervous.

We need to pressure Senate Republicans and Speaker Paul Ryan to speak out NOW. Can you call and tell them to stop Steve Bannon from reaching the White House?

Since Trump announced he will appoint Bannon as his top advisor, protests have sprung in the streets and in Congress. Republicans are now under intense pressure to speak out against Bannon, and getting direct calls from their constituents will push them over the edge.

Munsup, Congress has every power to stop Bannon's appointment. They can even block Trump's other nominations until Bannon is out. We can get Republicans to join the outcry if we speak up now, and he'll be sure never to step foot in the White House.

Here's the phone number:

Sen. Portman - (202) 224-3353

If you can't reach a person, leave a voicemail.

After you call, can you tell us how it went?

It's always best to speak in your own words, but here are some points to guide you:

You are knowingly letting a white supremacist and misogynist in the White House. Why?

No decent person, Republican or Democrat, should allow Steve Bannon in the highest level of government.

You have every power to stop Bannon from reaching the White House, starting with publicly denouncing him.

If you represent the people, speak up now--denounce Donald Trump's appointment of known white supremacist, Steve Bannon.

Let us know how it went.

From: Ray Morris; CEO, CREDO
Subject: Breaking news: How we're fighting to protect your privacy

This is something I've wanted to tell you since I became CEO of CREDO but haven't been able to because of a gag order issued by the federal government.

In 2013, CREDO received two National Security Letters from the FBI. We filed a lawsuit against the FBI challenging the constitutionality of National Security Letters or NSLs. NSLs are a tool the federal government can use to secretly demand information about our customers. The federal government forced us to remain silent about these requests and our fight against them with a gag order. For three long years, we have been forced to keep this lawsuit a secret.

Unlike other phone companies who profit by selling information to the federal government, privacy is a core value for CREDO, and we will fight to defend it. We have run campaigns opposing the PATRIOT Act and other privacy-violating laws and funded a variety of groups who fought alongside us.

That's also why in 2014 we became the first mobile phone company to issue a transparency report and why we are the only phone company to earn a five-star rating last year from the Electronic Frontier Foundation for our policies protecting your data from government requests.

We owe a special thank you to the Electronic Frontier Foundation for representing us in this lawsuit, which ably and heroically fought in court to make sure we could exercise our First Amendment rights and talk about these NSLs with you.

You can read the press release further explaining this critical issue here.

I want to thank all of you for being a part of the CREDO family. Families fight to defend each other, and that's why we've sued the government to protect your privacy rights.
