Subject: An Asian Epilog of 2016 Election

Speaking as a Vietnamese-American, hence a very newcomer to this country since 1975, I have not seen this much hatred toward immigrants as I have witnessed from the Trump campaign since I arrived on this land. Let this be a lesson that we will not make the same mistake again. Hillary had met every target in every poll pre-election, but what the polls did not take into account was the first time Republican voters (most likely the KKK and crazies and angry whites) that were driven to the polls, and this was never matched by the Latino/millennials/young African-Americans/Asian Americans side. Let's use this moment to solidify our building blocks and thank all Republican Asian Americans (on this list and throughout Ohio) who voted for the Dems and HRC and told us about it. I felt anger, disappointment, but never despair, or discouragement, or loss of hope, because otherwise one is not worthy of leadership. I recommend to all to be proud and have the shortest memory of last Tuesday but not forgetting our main missions and wake up tomorrow and business as usual, about building the greatest coalitions and teams, so we can be on the winning side of love, compassion, and humanity, all that flows in the veins of proud Democrats and Asian-American Democrats. I will continue to fight hard to protect and preserve the Affordable Care Act and you find your passion and fight as hard as I.

November 9, 2002

Somewhere between 450,000 and a million Europeans in Florence, Italy, peacefully protested the threatened U.S. invasion of Iraq. The inaugural meeting of the European Social Forum had just concluded there. It was a regional part of the framework established at the World Social Forum which had met in Porto Alegre, Brazil, first in 2001.

Subject: White supremacists think their man won the White House

Yesterday, I watched Hillary Clinton give a gracious concession speech, one that was filled with hope and a touch of reassurance. It was, in some ways, a celebration of our democracy and its stability, which depends on the peaceful transition of power.

President Barack Obama, who campaigned fiercely against Donald Trump in the final weeks of the campaign, has been equally magnanimous, reminding us of the incredible dignity and grace with which he led our country over the past eight years.

I share the sentiments they expressed. We do need to give Trump a chance, for the good of our country. Maybe he will surprise us and build bridges, not walls.

But we can't suddenly forget or forgive what he said during the campaign.

We can't forget that Trump called Mexican immigrants "rapists" and killers, or that he said a federal judge can't decide a lawsuit fairly because he is a "Mexican" (he was born in Indiana).

We can't forget that his signature campaign promise is to build a wall at the border with Mexico.

We can't forget that he proposed banning Muslims from entering our country or that he suggested that the "Muslim community" was complicit in the terrorist attack in Orlando.

We can't forget the despicable way he talks about women or that he bragged about sexually assaulting them.

We can't forget that he mocked people with disabilities.

We can't forget that he exploited ugly, racist stereotypes when he described African-American communities as "war zones" and "hell."

We can't forget that he failed to immediately disavow the endorsement of David Duke, a neo-Nazi and probably the most well known white supremacist in America.

We can't forget that he named as his campaign manager a man who runs a website catering to the alt-right, a rebranded white nationalist movement.

We can't forget that he re-circulated racist and anti-Semitic tweets.

We can't forget that he went on Alex Jones' radio show and told the far-right radio host that his "reputation is amazing." Jones is, in fact, a fabulist, a con artist known for propagating wild conspiracy theories, such as his claim that the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was the work of the government.

The point is, in Trump we suddenly face a president-elect who has been wallowing in the cesspool of hate and extremism.

White supremacists who backed his candidacy are jumping for joy. They think they now have their man in the White House.

Andrew Anglin, proprietor of the Daily Stormer, a truly sickening website popular among neo-Nazis, declared, "Our Glorious Leader has ascended to God Emperor. Make no mistake about it: we did this."

David Duke was equally exultant, tweeting that "our people played a HUGE role in electing Trump!"

Kevin MacDonald, an outspoken anti-Semite and former professor, wrote, "This is an amazing victory. Fundamentally, it is a victory of White people over the oligarchic, hostile elites."

We can't afford to take these statements as the ravings of extremists on the fringes of society. They are now at the gates.

But it's not just sieg-heiling Nazis and cross-burning Klansmen who should trouble Americans concerned about what a Trump victory portends. It's also the more polite, suit-wearing extremists who move in mainstream political circles and already have their nose under the Trump tent.

They're people like Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state who birthed the viciously discriminatory, unconstitutional anti-immigrant laws enacted by Arizona, Alabama and other states several years ago; and Ken Blackwell, the former Ohio secretary of state who is now a senior fellow at the rabidly anti-LGBT Family Research Council. Both are reportedly serving as key members of Trump's transition team.

As is customary, Trump has pledged to be a president "for all Americans."

If he truly means it, he must first boot the extremists out of his tent and tell them in no uncertain terms that they will have no voice or place in his administration. If he does that, perhaps he can begin to stanch the bleeding from the wounds he ripped open in our country.

But, given the early signs, we're not counting on it.

No, we're going on what Trump has been saying all along. The time is now for progressives everywhere to unite and fight with everything we have.

-----------
P.S. Please read our report on Trump's transition team. It's not reassuring.

So it wasn't a dream.

Today we woke up to the reality that Donald Trump, who has attacked and belittled so many of our diverse communities and shown his disdain for our country's best values, will likely—despite losing the popular vote—be sworn in as president of the United States on January 20.

We have only 71 days until the inauguration.

And we have to get ready.

The resistance begins now. Are you in?

Pitch in now to help us build the momentum we'll need to stop Donald Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress from tearing our country apart.

Our typical efforts won't be enough. We have to rethink what we're doing on four major fronts:

  • Keeping ourselves, our families, and our fellow Americans safe. We need a plan for what we do when a version of the Muslim immigrant ban is attempted. And when the first wave of deportations beings. And we need a legal strategy to cope with harassment and surveillance of movement leaders or protestors.
  • Starting to organize to stop Trump's destructive policies. Trump has a big agenda on dozens of fronts—almost all of it toxic—from repealing Obamacare to overturning President Obama's climate rules to undoing the breakthrough Iran diplomatic agreement. We need a concerted plan to stop him—from making sure Democrats in Congress have visible public support to filibuster him, to supporting mass peaceful protests.
  • Rebooting activism infrastructure from the top down to make sure our communication is secure. It's not paranoid, at this unique juncture in our history, to note that the surveillance state will now be in the hands of Donald Trump and his attorney general—maybe Chris Christie or Rudy Giuliani.
  • Developing an electoral strategy to take back Congress in 2018 and the White House in 2020. The organizing for that starts now.

As Elizabeth Warren says, "We can whine about it, we can whimper about it—or we can fight back. I'm fighting back."

The country is counting on MoveOn members to fight back. The resistance begins now. Are you in?

Subject: The future of Social Security is in Donald Trump's hands.

There's no way to put a happy face on what happened on Tuesday.

Americans voted, and the result handed power to a unified Republican government led by President-elect Donald Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan, who has made dismantling Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid his personal mission.

The only thing standing in their way will be a united American public who know that our Social Security system must be expanded, never cut.

In the primaries, Trump broke with the standard Republican position and pledged to honor Social Security's promise, and not cut benefits. Our job for the next four years is to hold him to that promise.

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid's future has never been more precarious than right now. We need to stand together and ensure that these programs remain strong.

Can you let us know that you're with us? Click here to say loud and clear: No cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid!

In 2005, a reelected President George W. Bush and a unified Republican Congress set out on a plan to privatize our Social Security system. The American people stood up to protect a system that has never missed a payment, doesn't add a penny to the deficit, and can pay full benefits for nearly two decades.

We are not giving up. We're going to stand together.

Subject: Will you be part of the resistance?

What does a Trump presidency mean for our work? It means we're fighting for the very survival of the American Way and the rights of all Americans. We need you with us in this fight.

As we head into uncharted and dangerous waters, we need to be able to rely on our supporters for the battles ahead. And we need a base of support strong enough to send the message loud and clear that Trump's narrow Electoral College win (he did not win the popular vote) did NOT redefine the American Way.

Will you pledge a monthly donation today to sustain our work to defend constitutional rights and values, as well as the people who will be on the front lines of right-wing attacks?

Yes -- I am ready to commit to being part of America's opposition to Trump and Trump Republicans over these difficult years to come>>

If Trump attempts to implement even a fraction of his campaign promises, we're in store for a wave of unconstitutional attacks on immigrants, Muslims, women, people of color and others.

The vote-suppressing former Ohio Secretary of State, Ken Blackwell of the right-wing Family Research Council -- formerly the vote-suppressing Ohio Secretary of State -- is set to lead Trump's domestic policy transition team. And the names of potential cabinet secretaries being floated are terrifying -- Myron Ebel, a high-profile climate change denier, for EPA; Rudy Giuliani for Attorney General; Sarah Palin for Energy or Interior.

This is no joke. It's our new reality. And vigilant opposition is a patriotic duty like it has never been before.

I hope you'll let us know you're with us by pledging a monthly sustaining contribution to PFAW and making your first monthly gift today.

Will you commit to standing up to Trump with a monthly donation to PFAW?

Yes -- Trumpism is NOT the American Way and I am ready to FIGHT BACK>>

Subject: A Film Update: The Sultan & the Saint

As you may or may not be aware, earlier this year, I'd spent the better part of a month shooting a soon-to-be-released feature-length, historical docudrama, entitled The Sultan & the Saint.  With a cast of close to 400, including extras and background performers, it tells the true story of how two deeply religious men of warring faiths, during the 13th Century's Fifth Crusade,  managed to come to a meeting of their hearts, souls and minds, and it's a project that I'm extremely proud to have been a part of.  It's also one which, following the results of this week's election, has an even deeper significance to the current state of world affairs, especially now, here in America.  I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to play the #3 role in the film, that of 'Cardinal Pelagius', the imperious Papal Legate who took charge of the Crusader forces, during the siege of the Egyptian city of Damietta, and a lot of love went into the making of this project, from everyone involved.

Eventually expected to air on PBS stations, nationwide, sometime in 2017, the film will have it's theatrical premiere on the campus of Georgetown University, in Washington DC, this Saturday, November 12.  It will then be seen, in limited screenings, in select cities around the country, during which the audiences will be encouraged to participate in a discussions on Muslim/Christian relations, prior to its airing on PBS, next year.

Narrated by Jeremy Irons, and utilizing the talents of many remarkable movie industry professionals, including the concept artist who'd also worked on the 2015 summer hit movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, the producers made every effort to make this a visually stunning, as well as deeply inspirational, movie, and I hope you'll try to see it, when the occasion might arise.

Peace, and let's all continue on in Hope and Love...

The election may be over, but we have not closed the door on the hate-fueled rhetoric and actions emboldened by Donald Trump's campaign. In fact, Americans in increasing numbers continue to be terrified.

We are seeing reports from across the country of Nazi symbols, of attacks on Muslims, of aggressive hate speech against LGBTQ and communities of color, and of sexual assault. We are also hearing about children terrorized by race-based bullying at school. [1] This hurts our children, our families, and our country.

--->
Donald Trump, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan need to take steps to put a stop to this now. Tell them to use their leadership positions to immediately condemn racism, misogyny, sexism, violence and all forms of hate in order to make it clear that this type of behavior has no place in our United States.

  • In Illinois, white university students put on blackface and posed in front of a Confederate Flag to celebrate Trump's victory. [1]
  • In Philadelphia, vandals scrawled Nazi and pro-Trump messages in city neighborhoods. [2]
  • In Kansas, a high school suspended two White boys wearing Trump shirts for ripping a hijab off a fellow student. When asked why they did it, one boy answered, "Because she's about to get kicked out anyway and we won." [3]
  • In Delaware, a Black woman filling her gas tank was approached by a group of four White men. One said to her, "How scared are you, you black b****? I should just kill you right now, you're a waste of air." Another showed her his firearm and said, "You're lucky there's witnesses or else I'd shoot you right here." [4]
  • In California, a young woman was approached by an older man who said, "I can't wait until Trump asks us to rape your people and send you back over the biggest damn wall we're going to build. Go back to hell, wet back." [5]
  • Also in California, a gay man at a bar was approached by a group of men who shouted at him, "We got a new President you f***ing f****ts," before assaulting him in a nearby alley. [6]
  • Educators from across the country are reporting rising levels of anxiety and fear among their students of color. In Utah, two parents reported seeing two kindergartners tell a Hispanic classmate that he would be going back to Mexico after Trump's victory. [7]

We absolutely cannot allow these painful and alarming new levels of hate to become normalized in our country, for there could be no quicker erosion of America's promise of liberty and justice for all than such terrorism of our people.

--->
Donald Trump and the Congressional leadership must do everything possible now to nip the normalization of hate in the bud. Tell them to speak out now and condemn racism, misogyny, sexism, violence and all forms of hate, making clear that this type of behavior have no place in our country.

America's diversity is our strength. That our citizens, who come from all walks of life and tapestry of backgrounds, are free to live, love and worship as they will, is protected by and enshrined in our U.S. Constitution. After the long, divisive campaign we just experienced, we look to our leaders to bring us together and heal the body politic. May they do the right thing and unify us now, so we can continue to enjoy the blessings of democracy now and forever.
