Subject: Action needed: Senate to vote on Trumpcare next week

Trumpcare is scheduled for a vote at the end of next week. Republicans are more divided than before about passing this bill, but Mitch McConnell's arrogance truly knows no bounds.

Trumpcare faces serious Republican opposition. Moderates oppose it because the Medicaid cuts are too extreme, while far right conservatives want to deny poor and disabled Americans health insurance even faster. Both sides are digging their heels in, and arrogant McConnell thinks he can satisfy them both by next week.

Our job over the next two weeks is to drive an even bigger wedge between Senate Republicans. Call Senator Rob Portman at (202) 224-3353. Tell them "No deal, no how, no way on Trumpcare." Here's a sample message:

Hello, my name is Munsup calling from 45431 in Beavercreek. Trumpcare is the least popular legislation in 30 years. Forcing this bill through is defying the will of the American people. We don't want this. Reject Trumpcare now. Thank you.

After you hang up, please fill out this form and let us know how your call(s) went.

Can't call? Getting a busy signal? Sign and send a letter to your Republican senator(s) telling them why you strongly oppose Trumpcare.

McConnell cannot win without far-right extremists, so he's starting to consider Ted Cruz's asinine proposal: make health insurance inaccessible to folks with pre-existing conditions, while somehow still costing taxpayers more than Obamacare. And moderates? He's throwing money at them and counting on them to cave and vote with him anyway.

Trumpcare is the least popular legislation in three decades. The GOP is divided on it because Americans have roundly rejected this cruel attack on Medicaid for 22 million, guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions, reproductive healthcare and so much more. We need to keep the GOP split on Trumpcare.

Call Senator Rob Portman at (202) 224-3353. Tell them "No deal, no how, no way on Trumpcare." After you hang up, please fill out this form and let us know how your call(s) went.

Can't call? Getting a busy signal? Sign and send a letter to your Republican senator(s) telling them why you strongly oppose Trumpcare.

Keep fighting,

Overly generous. Underfunded. Too expensive.

Special interests and political ideologues are always making up new excuses to take away pensions from public servants.

Since the Great Recession, they have waged a false-information campaign against public pensions.

While not all of the motives are clear, one thing is certain: if the over $3.8 trillion in public pension funds were converted into 401(k)s, someone on Wall Street would stand to reap enormous financial benefit.

Despite their "sky-is-falling" rhetoric and outright lies, we know the truth: defined benefit pensions continue to be the most efficient way to provide a secure retirement for working families.

Subject: [JVP-NewsAndUpdates] june updates!

I hope you are enjoying your summer thus far! I want to specially welcome our new members--after May's membership drive we have almost 14,000 members (that means you if you are reading this update), of whom over 1200 are brand new!

For those of you new to this list, I try to send periodic updates (sometimes more regularly than others, i must admit) to keep you updated on the big issues we are grappling with. And as usual, June was a busy month.

We kicked it off with one of our biggest national actions ever--six interruptions of the Celebrate Israel Parade in New York, which coincided almost exactly with the 50th anniversary of the occupation.  Over 100 JVP members and friends took part, including from JVP-DC Metro, Baltimore, Philly, NY, and Westchester.  The intention of the action was to bring attention to the ties between the NYPD and Israel (the NYPD even has a permanent office open in Israel and the NYPD has pride of place in the Israel Parade) as part of the official launch of our #DeadlyExchange campaign.

Because of the vagaries of multiple coordinated actions in a highly securitized environment, the most successful action turned out to be one organized by queer JVP members that specifically called out the LGBT contingent of the parade for its part in pinkwashing Israeli apartheid. Five activists were arrested as part of that action, and a backlash ensued.  You can see a video about the action made by  Jake Ratner here, a first hand account of the action by Craig Wilse here, an explanation of the action by Alissa Wise here, and some necessary context by Donna Nevel here.

Later in the month, a staff member of pinkwashing organization A Wider Bridge accused the Chicago Dyke March of antisemitism because of her insistence on proclaiming her Zionism in a space that was explicitly anti-Zionist.  Our JVP-Chicago chapter, which has members that were part of the Dyke March, put out a statement in solidarity which you can see here.

The controversy about the Dyke March did lead to an important public conversation about the relationship between zionism and antisemitism, and the role of Israel in Jewish identity, both symbolically and in reality.

All of the above issues are touched on in our book "On Anti-Semitism" which you can order here if you haven't already! This is a great time to organize talks about the book--if you are interested in doing so please contact tallie@jvp.org.

Given these discussions, the timing couldn't be more appropriate to finally launch our webinar series on Zionism in the fall. The staff/board/member committee has been preparing the curriculum on and off for a year and a half, and we're hoping this will truly be an organization-wide community learning experience.  Almost 300 members have already pre-registered, which you can do here, and a FAQ with more detailed information about the goals of the series is also attached to this email. We'll be starting in September with about one seminar a month through January.

In a related vein, JVP student and faculty members in California have been fighting hard on an egregious case at SF State (sadly only one of several battles being waged on campuses this month). A coalition of groups (including JVP) held a know your rights fair at SF State, specifically for undocumented Arab and Muslim and LGBT students. Hillel subsequently filed a suit claiming that their exclusion from tabling as part of the event was an incident of discrimination against Jews.

These claims not only erase the Jews on campus who are actually supportive of Palestinian rights, but  uses claims of Jewish discomfort to harass and repress the rights of Arab and Muslim students, who were already under severe pressure at the university.  David Spero wrote an excellent op-ed explaining the situation, many students wrote letters to the editors, and our members in California have been making calls to the President of the University, urging her to defend against the lawsuit and protect all students.  The decision is expected sometime in the next week. If the university rules in Hillel's favor it will in effect be validating Hillel's claim to defining Jewishness on campus and its claims that the Palestine solidarity movement is antisemitic.

While all of these events have drawn enormous attention in the U.S., there has been frustratingly little attention to  the escalating electricity crisis in Gaza. During this month, Israel and the Palestinian Authority colluded to reduce the already drastically curtailed supplies of electricity to Gaza to just two hours a day, which constitutes a severe public health crisis and escalation of pressure on Gaza.  Our new Health Workers Council put out this statement to help bring a sense of urgency to the crisis. See this video from the IMEU for a sense of the impact on people in Gaza.

Meanwhile, in better news, we were very proud to be part of the effort, along with the US Campaign, Code Pink, and American Muslims for Palestine, to urge congresspeople to sign on to a letter expressing concern about Issa Amro.  The founder of Youth Against Settlements in Hebron is facing charges in Israeli court on July 9th for non-violent protest. An unprecedented 32 congresspeople signed on to the letter, the largest number to date that have signed on to a letter supporting Palestinian rights. So many of you in chapters did an enormous amount of work reaching out to your congressperson--and even if yours didn't sign on this time, hopefully they will the next!

Speaking of which, we have set an ambitious goal for 20 chapters to participate in Town Halls with your congresspeople in August.  We want to make sure that Palestinian rights are on the progressive agenda.  We'll be holding a special planning call for the August recess on July 17th at 8 ET/5 PT--if you want your chapter to participate you can register for a planning call here or reach out to alana@jvp.org if you have any questions.

Also this month, I was invited to represent JVP at the UN Forum to Mark 50 Years of Occupation, a first for us!  You can see video of my remarks here.

And finally, I want to thank our seven wonderful Fellows who are with us for the summer in the New York, Oakland, Seattle and Chicago offices, all of who are coming from campus JVP chapters or chapters-to-be. They are doing everything from writing the daily news updates to helping plan our Jewish Communal Transformation work to helping with JVP's tech needs, and are not only fun to be around but getting so much done!

Here's to a summer of fruitful political conversations, effective campaigning, and continued progress!

U.S. judge finds that Aetna deceived the public about its reasons for quitting Obamacare

From: Andrew Tierman
Subject: 25th Amendment

It is said that a relatively small number of individually composed letters to a Congressperson can have an impact.

It is true that a Representative may discount the appeals of those not in his or her district.

Some, like myself, may be represented by a Democrat, and thus without the onus/opportunity of appealing to a Republican Representative as a fellow citizen to withdraw support for the President of his or her own Party. I believe that this may increase our responsibility to speak up.

The logic will be evident to sender and recipient: Republicans need to hear all American voices, and particularly - not only the voices of Republicans in their own districts. The recipient will know from your return address, if it is the case, that you reside in Democratic member's district, and thus need to extend a voice beyond, that the Republican member not live under the illusion that the only voices that count are those of the Republican voters who elected him or her; that much of America is in an uproar waiting for his or her Party to assume its patriotic duty, beyond partisanship and for the good of the nation.

I am including below a letter which I am sending to Republican House members in my State of Michigan, which has 9 out of 14 House Districts held by the President's Party.

I am not sending this letter to exhibit my work per se, but to urge others to do the same. However you put your thoughts into words, expressing your belief that President Trump is not, cannot, and will not protect our United States or otherwise discharge the powers and duties of his office, receipt of even ten or twenty letters apiece by Republican Representatives of your State can make an impression. The impression sought is that the mass of the American people do not trust Donald Trump to competently, lawfully, and satisfactorily serve out his term as our President; that a plurality of Americans believe that he is unfit for that office. Please read my letter in that manner, as encouragement and impetus for you to write and send your own letter to your Republican member of Congress, and even to other Republican members from your own State. Please note that while I did not refer explicitly to the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, I have used language therefrom, so that the suggestion that the member might assert influence in that direction is in effect explicit.

You can find a listing of all members of the House of Representatives with their office addresses [note that the zip code for all Representatives is 20515] at http://www.house.gov/representatives/#roomNumbers

There are 3 House office bldgs, CHOB, LHOB, and RHOB, respectively, the Cannon, Longworth, and Rayburn House Office Buildings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my letter:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Honorable ____________
____ _______ House Office Bldg.
Washington DC  20515

Dear Representative __________:

I am writing to you, a Republican member of the House from Michigan, as a Democrat who would have respectfully and graciously accepted a Republican such as Marco Rubio as President, had he become the candidate of your Party and fairly won the 2016 election, in order to express my deep concern about the man who has become the President of our beloved nation.

I am concerned about the following regarding President Donald Trump: that he will not protect the United States from foreign enemies; that he will not protect the national interests of the United States; that he will not protect the stature of the United States in the World; that he will not protect the health and well-being of the people of the United States; that he will not protect the liberty and freedom of the people of the United States; that he will not protect the civil rights, human rights and Constitutional rights of the people of the United States; and that he will not protect the integrity of American democracy.

Various facts have become publicly clear that affect the capacity of President Donald Trump to satisfactorily discharge the powers and duties of the highest office in the United States having enormous impact not only on our nation but on the entire World; that affect the President's inclination to faithfully discharge those powers and duties; and that affect the likelihood that, while in office, the President will in fact faithfully discharge those powers and duties, particularly in regard to the stated concerns above.

President Donald Trump does not exhibit the education, experience, quality of mind, moral composition, or mental attributes and psychological disposition to assume those powers and duties with solemn respect toward and comprehension of the elements, scope and substance of the stated concerns involving protection of the United States and its people or of our tradition of democracy itself. The President has demonstrated that it is difficult to impossible for him to distinguish his individual persona, sentiment, and interest – whether material, psychological or of any other kind – from the high office of the Presidency of the United States of America. He openly and without restraint responds to events that pertain to his office as the principal representative and the sole executive of the most powerful nation in the World as if they were personal slights and insults, and he exhibits the proclivity to translate personal slights and insults seamlessly and without modulation by any sense of the dignity and responsibility of the office, into official declarations and behaviors. President Trump cannot clearly distinguish which nations are friends, and which are enemies of our own nation, with far-reaching consequences for our safety as one nation, and for the stature of our nation, in the World – much of which lucidly views Mr. Trump as an embarrassment, as our own embarrassment as the people of America. While Donald Trump exhibits very little understanding of the history of our nation or of the World, or of the civil traditions of American democracy, or indeed of any of the arts or sciences of statecraft or statesmanship, policy, or governance in our Constitutional Republic, he also exhibits little desire to learn any of these things. On the contrary, he expresses contempt for learning, experience, and expertise in these matters, such are ordinarily supplemented by civil servants who serve, without regard to Party, in order to achieve the protections listed above. And he expresses contempt for those who would so serve, who have served, and who can serve by their intelligence, experience, and dedication. President Trump instead parrots the very themes of simplistic demagoguery that he used to inflame crowds of partisans to support him prior to the election; and he returns preferentially to the same crowds for narcissistic self-affirmation rather than focusing on performance as the national executive. A telling aspect of Mr. Trump's delinquency from leadership is his obsessive focus on reversing the accomplishments of his predecessor, as if thereby retaining the fervor of those partisan crowds were the only index of success he understands.

President Trump evinces in his words and actions no understanding of the Constitution of the United States, to which countless public servants, in the armed services and in government at all levels of our Republic, those in the learned professions, and elected officials at all levels have declared their dedication and which they have acknowledged as the source and compass of their authority and powers. President Trump shows in his words and actions a want of regard for the truth; a profound lack of humility when faced by criticism that is based in truth – to the extent that he compounds his disregard for truth by blatant rationalizations, circumlocutions, vacillation, and equivocation – indicia of prevarication readily recognizable by any precocious child of eight, because the mental gymnastics by which he avoids accountability and truthfulness resemble the psychological tactics of an insecure child. President Trump has demonstrated in myriad ways a fashion of speaking and a style of behavior that would attract censure and condemnation by responsible persons if observed among their peers or own children in daily life outside the spectacle of high office. Such behavior suggests either an inability or unwillingness to apply, or an incapacity to recognize the  need for, ordinary human restraint. President Trump exhibits not only features of authoritarianism, but an affection for those who exhibit the same; and he seeks out the approval of those who appear to admire authoritarian instincts and behaviors, to the exclusion of any appeal to the people of our nation at large. Indeed, the other national executives with whom he shares the greatest rapport are autocrats who suppress their own populations.

In summary, President Donald Trump has by his own words and actions displayed that he is unable to perform in the Office of the Presidency of the United States. I implore you, as a fellow citizen, to consider what may be done under the lawful powers and solemn duties of your Office in a co-equal branch of the government of our Republic, for the good of our nation and its people, to bring about in a lawful and duly considered, impartially deliberated manner a declaration that Donald Trump is unable and unfit, mentally, morally, psychologically, and intellectually to discharge the powers and duties of the Office of the Presidency in order to protect the people of this nation from enemies foreign and domestic, in their health and well-being, in their liberty and rights under law and Constitution, and to protect the sovereign interests of the United States of America.

Thank you.

Most Sincerely and Respectfully yours,

Andrew Jay Tierman

From: Vicki Kaplan
Subject: A big, audacious plan

Hi, I'm Vicki Kaplan, MoveOn's organizing director.

I'm writing you a personal note today to ask for your help.

One thing that the Trump presidency has taught us is that fighting Republicans on issue after issue using our old political playbook is simply not enough. There are too many critical fronts that demand our attention and, in most cases, victory means only stopping bad, cruel, or even dangerous things from happening.

The resistance needs to change the playing field.

That's why, as part of our broader efforts to build an anti-Trump wave and take back the House in 2018, MoveOn has launched a big, audacious new program that we're calling Resistance Summer.

It's a summer-long training program for 1,000 people across the country to learn how to organize and lead high-impact efforts in their own communities. That means increasing direct constituent pressure on elected officials, engaging and registering voters, and building on-the-ground organizing capacity. And it means setting the stage for our elections program; it's a key step in laying the groundwork for an anti-Trump wave next year.

It's a massive program, but that's the scale of what this political moment and our country's future demands. That's why we made Resistance Summer a reality, kicking off our work and preparing for big actions in the months ahead.

But a program this big is expensive, and we took a huge leap of faith by launching the program before we've recruited enough monthly supporters to fully fund it. That's why I'm writing today on behalf of MoveOn with a simple request. Munsup, will you chip in monthly to help sustain this game-changing organizing program?

Donate monthly!   Or make a one-time gift

In the first months of Trump's disastrous presidency, we've blocked much of his and the GOP's agenda so far, strengthened our networks and resolve to protect ourselves and our neighbors, and convinced elected officials to act with a backbone they wouldn't have found without us. In the face of the greatest obstacles and setbacks, we have risen up, and we have not wavered.

But we need to be clear-eyed about the long-term challenges that we still face: slashing of the social safety net to benefit the wealthy; an escalation of saber-rattling and war-making; rampant racism, sexism, and anti-immigrant hate-baiting; deliberate undermining of our democratic institutions; and climate denial and environmental destruction.

The only way out is to organize and mobilize.

All of the organizing work that MoveOn has done over its long tenure—from knocking on doors and making calls to help take back the House in 2006, to our long, hard fight to elect Barack Obama president in 2008, to passing Obamacare, to engaging in direct action to stop a potential war with Iran—has been possible only because of support from members like you.

And now, in 2017, as we go toe-to-toe with Trump and an increasingly unhinged Republican Party that's willing to toss aside decades of political norms and change the rules to try to jam through their despicable agenda—and as we push Democrats to deserve to win, as a visionary progressive alternative and not simply the least-bad option on the ballot—we need your help once again.

Will you chip in monthly to help support Resistance Summer, to build organizing capacity
in communities across the country, and to kick Republicans out of office in 2018?

Donate monthly!   Or make a one-time gift

Resistance Summer has three core objectives:

  1. Build organizing skills and leadership capacity in communities across the country.
  2. Build and demonstrate the power of the resistance.
  3. Win tangible victories this summer against Trump's agenda through both defensive and proactive campaigns.

As the program swings into action, we need more monthly donors to cover our costs, including a monthly stipend for the best trainers in the country and a $150 monthly reimbursement to each participant to help offset the often-hidden costs of volunteering, such as paying for transportation, cell phone minutes, and renting venues to hold events. We'll also need your ongoing support to make sure we can sustain the organizing we build through this program to win back power in 2018.

Click below to chip in now to help support Resistance Summer's high-impact organizing
in communities across the country and to lay the groundwork to win back power next year.

Donate monthly!   Or make a one-time gift

Together, we're going to keep our democracy intact and our communities strong—and pave the way for a better future.

Want to support our work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your ongoing support, now more than ever. Will you stand with us?
