Subject: [SchooltoPrisonPipeline] United Nations Expressed Serious Concerns about Police in Schools

As the world recognizes the serious problem with police in school, why can't Dayton Board recognize that placing police in school and school related activities is an invitation  for a human rights violation.

______________________________________________

The United Nations Working Group of experts on People of African Descent.  On Januarry 29th, at its press conference, at UN Offices, Washington, DC, . .
UN experts urge US to address legacies of the past, police impunity and 'crisis of racial injustice'

* * *  the experts found that contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the "racial terror and lynching" of the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency, they said. * * *

However, the experts expressed serious concerns about the police killings, the presence of police in schools, and violence targeting the African American community with impunity, and racial bias in the criminal justice system, mass incarceration and the criminalization of poverty which disproportionately affects African Americans.

During its 11-day mission, the Working Group's delegation heard from civil society, researchers and families of victims of police killings about racial discrimination and Afrophobia.

"The persistent gap in almost all the human development indicators, such as life expectancy, income and wealth, level of education, housing, employment and labour, and even food security, among African Americans and the rest of the US population, reflects the level of structural discrimination that creates de facto barriers for people of African descent to fully exercise their human rights," Ms. Mendes France stressed.

The human rights experts met representatives of the Government at the federal and the state levels, and the US Congress and Senate, as well as hundreds of civil society organization representatives, lawyers and human rights activists from more than 20 states who had gathered in the different cities.

Nature Quest is designed to provide children ages 6 to 12 with knowledge and skills that will encourage them to explore the natural world around them. This is an opportunity for children to experience nature and learn about natural science in a structured and safe environment.

Dates:  February 11, March 10, and April 7, 2016
Time:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Place:  Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center on Wright Brothers Hill, GPS:  Near the intersection of State Route 444 and Skyline Drive (Road), Wright Patterson Air Force Base. 937-425-0008.

Each program will include nature-based learning experiences through hands-on science based activities and experiments.  If the weather permits, a hike or outdoor activity will explore the concept of the day.  Be sure to have the children dress for the weather!

Limited Space is available, so please sign up ahead of time.  Please include the age of each child, number of children, and which programs you wish to attend. To sign up for Nature Quest call the park at 937-225-7705 or email maribeth_kambitsch@nps.gov.   Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

FIRST PROGRAM:  Get to Know Your H2O! Where Does all the Water Go? Thursday, February 11, 2016.
Everything that is alive depends on water, but when it rains where does the water go? How does it get to our lakes and oceans?  And why is it important to know where all this H2O ends up? Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the watershed in the Miami Valley and how it impacts our lives.  There will also be an introduction to the two different habitats, wetland and upland, which will be explored in the later sessions.

SECOND PROGRAM:  Exploring Habitats:  Up on the Hill, Trees and Woods. Thursday, March 10, 2016.
Trees are everywhere on Wright Brothers Hill.  They provide food and shelter for animals and even for other plants.  Students will learn how trees benefit wildlife, how they fit into our urban environment, and how they provide tremendous benefits to our lives.

THIRD PROGRAM: Exploring Habitats:  Down in Prairie, Grasses and Forbes. Thursday, April 07, 2016.

What is a prairie?  How does it differ from a forest?  Students will study the prairie habitat and learn about the differences between animals and plants that live in each habitat.  They will learn the importance of wetlands and they will investigate how water played an important role in creating and preserving the Huffman Prairie.

PLEASE JOIN US!

PRESS CONFERENCE:  "EXPANDING OUR HEARTS"

FEBRUARY 12, 2016; 11:30 AM
TEMPLE ISRAEL, 130 RIVERSIDE DRIVE

People of faith and concern from the Dayton Metropolitan area are gathering on Valentine's weekend to proclaim their love and support for the Muslim community and immigrants from the Middle East, especially Syria.

"Expanding Our Hearts" is the theme of a press conference slated for Friday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Temple Israel, 130 Riverside Drive in Dayton.

Spiritual leaders from a diversity of religions including Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Bahá'í, Unitarian Universalist, Hindu and others will offer perspectives from their respective teachings and prayers. Confirmed participants include Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz from Temple Israel, Dean of Roman Catholic clergy, Fr. Chris Worland, Rev. Dr. Crystal Walker, Executive Director of Greater Dayton Christian Connections, Dr. Colette Harrison of the Bahá'ís of Montgomery County, Shahin Tadayon, a Sufi Muslim […and others as they confirm]

This united message of support aims to dispel fears, countering much of the vitriolic rhetoric and violence being promulgated in various quarters of our nation. It highlights the common practice at the heart of all religions to extend hospitality and welcome the immigrant. The press conference is sponsored by an interfaith coalition that came together in December, "People of Faith Welcome Islam: Liberty and Justice for All."

Subject: Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence Call-In Session

The Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence (CIRGV) is a multi-jurisdictional, multi-agency, mutual effort, intended to quickly and effectively reduce gun-violence and associated homicides, with sustained reductions over time.  This initiative is a focused deterrence strategy, modeled after the 1990's Boston Gun Project, using the 2007 Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence Best Practices as a guide, with variations tailored to meet our greater Dayton community.  The "gun violence must stop" message, targeted toward group member involved (GMI) violent offenders, is disseminated by Call-In sessions with GMI parolees and probationers.  Offenders are presented with a clear message that gun violence will no longer be tolerated in this community.  If gun violence occurs, a coordinated effort by law enforcement agencies will use all available lawful means to address the gun violence, focusing on all members of the group.  Offenders are also offered alternatives.

The next Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence (CIRGV) Call-In Session is scheduled for  Friday, February 19, 2016, 2:00 p.m., in the Federal Court Building, 200 West Second Street, in Judge Rice's Courtroom.

If you would like to attend, and I encourage you to do so, please let me know by the end of the day, Tuesday, February 16, 2016, so that I can put you on the guest list. Space is limited and, as you know, security is especially important. All guests must be on the list and bring a photo ID. In addition, cell phones must be turned off in the courtroom. You are asked to be at the courthouse at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the session Please be on time as no one will be allowed to enter or exit the courtroom during the session. CIRGV would welcome any elected officials in your community that you may wish to invite as well.  In your response, please include the names and e-mail addresses of any guests you wish to attend.

At this Call-In Session, we intentionally invite family, community, and community leaders to be present when the message is delivered by community leaders, service providers, and law enforcement agencies because the message of stopping gun violence is really a message from all of us. I thought it would be good to have you there if you are available to show your support of the community norm of rejecting violence (especially gun violence).

RSVPs are mandatory.

The Call-In session will be approximately 90-120 minutes.

Please be on time, as no one will be allowed to enter or exit the courtroom during the session.
