Embracing Our Neighbor in the Miami Valley

Many of us are freshly aware of divisions and misunderstandings among and within communities of faith      especially around race, nationality and religious belief.  We treasure our faith communities and value their many gifts.  How do we best tap into these gifts to address our divisions and misunderstandings? We are not all the same, but in this time of derisive and reductionist politics, we can stand together united and inclusive.

Interfaith for Change has made it its’ mission to stand together with all faith and non-faith communities in challenging the bigotry and overt racism that seems to have gripped our community and our nation.  We invite you to join us in our stance and come together as one nation under GOD.

We would like to invite you to participate in our next gathering of Interfaith for Change: Embracing Our Neighbors in the Miami Valley, where people of faith share constructive ideas, plans, and opportunities to unify our diverse communities.   We would also be very interested in hearing about any efforts or initiatives that you may already be involved with and with which we can collaborate.

We meet monthly on the 3rd Thursday; different faith communities take turns hosting the gathering. Our next gathering will be on March 16th at 6:30pm at Dayton Mercy Society, 2277 Maue Road, Miamisburg, OH 45342.

We are planning a press conference for March 1 – to present our “statement of unity and collaboration” to the public and invite people to join with us in this cause. The press conference will take place at Dayton Mercy Society, 2277 Maue Rd, Miamisburg, OH at 10:00am. You are also invited to attend.

Should you have any questions or want any additional information, please feel free to contact Rev. Dr. Crystal Walker by email drcrystal1@yahoo.com or phone 937-222-4322

Welcome Dayton Continues Outreach and Education
on Issues Impacting Immigration

Within the first few weeks of the new presidential administration, we have experienced many challenges regarding immigration. We know that the recent Executive Orders have impacted our community in very personal ways and we want to offer our support during this time of increased uncertainty and fear.

We have expanded our efforts in outreach and education with both the receiving community and immigrants and refugees who are living in Dayton. Over the past few weeks, we have engaged in a number of community presentations to ensure our newest residents are aware of their civil and constitutional rights and how the Executive Orders on immigration may impact them. Additionally, we are continuing our community-building work to create mutual understanding between long-term residents and new Daytonians. Please check our
calendar of events and Facebook page to stay up to date with all of our activities and events.

By working together, we can make sure that our community stands on the better side of history. When we look back 10 or 20 years from now, Daytonians will remember that we weren't hindered by our fears but that we welcomed diverse new neighbors to join us in building a stronger community.

As Welcome Dayton continues its work of creating a safe and inclusive community for everyone who lives, gathers, works, and plays in the city of Dayton, we also want to ask you to continue to step up and show support. Following are three ways you can join us in working to ensure immigrants and refugees are welcomed and for you to spread the welcoming message:

  1. Become a Welcome Dayton Ambassador
  2. Host a Voices of the Immigrant Experience
  3. Volunteer with one of our Community Partners

Welcome Dayton is here for you. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need of additional support.

Resource of the Month: Ohio Protects

While everyone is at risk for consumer fraud, some scams specifically prey on immigrants and ethnic communities by taking advantage of language and cultural barriers. In fact, Latino and African-American communities are two to three times more likely to be victims of fraud than non-Hispanic whites, according to a 2016 Federal Trade Commission report. Examples of scams targeting immigrants and ethnic communities include:

  • Notario scams/immigration scams (non-lawyers offering to provide legal services for immigration matters).
  • False promises of obtaining a green card or government identification
  • Threats of deportation if you do not pay a large sum of money.
  • Affinity scams (scam artists targeting individuals from their same ethnic or racial group).
  • Home loan scams and car buying scams.
  • Calls demanding payment for unpaid debt.
  • Charging fees for services that are never provided or that are available for free.
  • Falsely impersonating government officials.
  • Healthcare enrollment scams by non-authorized individuals.
