The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF)

invites you to a special presentation on

THE ASIAN AMERICAN VOTE 2016

During the 2016 Presidential Elections, 13,846 Asian American voters participated in AALDEF's multilingual exit poll, the largest nonpartisan survey of its kind in the nation. It was conducted in 11 Asian languages and English in 55 cities across 14 states – NY, NJ, MA, PA, VA, MD, MI, GA, LA, FL, TX, NV, NM, and CA – and Washington, DC. The exit poll reveals vital information about Asian American voting patterns that is often overlooked in mainstream voter surveys.

At this special presentation, learn about the Asian American vote in the Presidential and Congressional elections and opinions on key issues by ethnicity, nativity, party enrollment, age, and English proficiency. We will present national data, as well as special data on each respective state.

Subject: Democrats just flipped two seats in ...

Democrats just flipped two more seats from red to blue in special elections this week in dark red Oklahoma.

No, that's not a typo: Democrats are winning in OKLAHOMA.

Last November, Democrats lost these seats with 40 and 42 percent of the vote. This week, we won them with 52 and 55 percent of the vote. I don't need to tell you this, but I will anyway: That is a huge swing.

The next special election is coming up fast: There a special election for state Senate in New Hampshire on July 25, and winning it could put Democrats on the path to the state Senate majority in 2018.

Can you chip in $5 to Daily Kos-endorsed Democrat Kevin Cavanaugh right now?

Democrats have been surging in special elections up and down the ballot this year, and we've picked up some seats at that state legislative level—including one in New Hampshire already.

But you know how hard it is to get voters to the polls for special elections like these. That's why we need to make sure Cavanaugh has the resources he needs to Get Out The Vote.

Please chip in $5 now.

Subject: Breaking: Social Security Trustees report shows we can expand benefits, not cut

Republicans like to pretend that their long-held desire to cut Social Security is based on economic concerns about affordability. They hide behind deficit fear-mongering to cover their ideology that when it comes to our retirement security, or a disability, or the loss of a loved one―we're on our own. But this ideology isn't about economics. It's just cruel—and the numbers back this up.

The new Social Security Trustees report―released today―shows a program that is strong and growing. It projects that, even if Congress took no action whatsoever, Social Security could pay 100% of benefits owed through 2034, and 77% of benefits owed after that.

And if the wealthy pay their fair share, and we can afford to expand Social Security and extend the lifespan of the trust fund.

Sign the petition today! Tell Congress that the numbers don't lie. We can afford to protect and expand Social Security.

This year's report projects that in 2017 Social Security will run an annual surplus of roughly $58.6 billion, bringing the accumulated surplus to about $2.9 trillion by the end of the year.

This is why the Democratic Party strongly favors expanding, not cutting Social Security, and why expansion was even included in the 2016 Democratic Party Platform:

We will fight every effort to cut, privatize, or weaken Social Security, including attempts to raise the retirement age, diminish benefits by cutting cost-of-living adjustments, or reducing earned benefits. Democrats will expand Social Security.

And they've shown this not through words, but through actions.

Since 2015, 20 Social Security expansion bills have been introduced in the House and Senate. And the Social Security 2100 Act, introduced this year by Rep. John Larson (D-CT), has 162 cosponsors in the House―the largest number of supporters for any expansion bill ever.

Sign the petition today and tell Congress to expand, not cut Social Security!

Poll after poll shows that the American people overwhelmingly support expanding, not cutting Social Security's modest benefits. Let's hold Republicans accountable and demand a safe and secure retirement for all Americans, not just the wealthy few.

From: Nick Hanauer
Subject: the pitchforks are coming

I just published this article in Politico and I wanted to make sure you got a chance to read it -- but first, please chip in $3 to help Civic Action keep causing trouble.

Since Election Day, I've been overwhelmed by anguished calls, emails, and conversations from my wealthy friends who, for the first time, are confronting the real possibility that our cozy utopian, urban, pluralistic lifestyles may be in peril.

I know what you're thinking: "Welcome to our reality, one-percenters."

The truth is, all of us, from the top 1% all the way down to the bottom 1% are feeling a lot of anxiety right now.

That's why I've written a new letter to my fellow one-percenters, letting them know that the pitchforks are at the gate, and time is running short.

I tried to warn them three years ago, Munsup, but they didn't listen. I told them that 30 years of rising inequality would inevitably lead to some sort of populist revolt that would disrupt the fantastic lives we elites enjoy. I cautioned that any society which allows itself to become radically and indefensibly unequal eventually faces either an uprising or a police state—or both.

Donald Trump rode to the White House on a wave of faux-populism, and now he's using the language of populist revolution to distract Americans from his Congressional cadre of trickle-downers and their plans to make America even more unequal.

What can we do about it? I believe that we in the American political and economic elite face an extraordinarily inconvenient but undeniable truth: Our country will not get better until our fellow citizens feel better; and they will not feel better until they actually do better. And this is the hard part for many of my rich pals: The American people will not do better until they are actually paid more.

That's why I created Civic Action—I wanted to create an organization that demands policies that will allow Americans to create better lives: policies like overtime pay, a higher minimum wage, and paid sick leave. And these policies just don't help individuals—they help businesses and our economy as a whole.

"How can this be?" you're probably thinking. "I've been told that pro-worker reforms hurt the economy!"

I'm here to tell you that's a lie—a scare tactic put forward by elites to keep your wages low. And you can take my word for it—as a venture capitalist and business owner, I'm the very definition of an elite. The truth is the exact opposite: when workers earn more money, businesses have more customers and hire more workers. That's because a thriving middle class is the source and cause of growth in capitalist economies. I'm not a job creator. You are.

The more we pretend that people like me are the origin of economic prosperity, the more pitchforks we'll see in the streets. Too many people are being left behind because of our greed.

The pitchforks are coming, my friends, and there's no good end of a pitchfork.

So what do you say, Munsup? Are you on the team… or are you on the wrong side of the pitchfork?
