Scopes "Monkey Trial" ends

The so-called "Monkey Trial" ended in Dayton, Tennessee, with high school teacher John T. Scopes convicted of violating a state law against teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.

It was considered illegal to contradict the Bible's description of God's seven-day creation of the world in Genesis.

The trial pitted two of America's leading advocates as the opposing lawyers: William Jennings Bryan, thrice the Democratic presidential candidate (1896, 1900, 1908) and the state's prosecutor; Clarence Darrow, a lawyer famous for representing the underdog, at the defense table.

Referred to as "the trial of the century" even before it began, it was the first trial ever broadcast (on radio).

Subject: The GOP's #1 goal: Cut earned benefits

Regardless of whether they call it "health care" or "tax reform", the GOP's real goal is always the same:  Cut our earned benefits to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations.

Paul Ryan and the Republican-controlled House have just advanced a budget out of committee that will cut $500 billion from Social Security and Medicare and $1.5 trillion from Medicaid and other health care programs.

We must keep fighting to stop this dangerous Republican agenda.

Late last night, we learned that the Senate's version of Trumpcare―which cuts taxes for the rich and destroys Medicaid and Medicare―has failed. And that is thanks to your hard work and activism.

But Republicans' attempts to destroy our earned benefits don't stop there. This week, Paul Ryan's House of Representatives is unveiling a new budget that cuts taxes for the rich, and slashes Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Republicans keep coming back to the same cruel play book―written by Wall Street lobbyists intent on destroying our earned benefits. They are playing a cruel game of whack-a-mole with Americans' economic security―and we can't miss even once.

Become a member of Social Security Works today with a donation as small as $5 and help fight Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan's dangerous ideological plans to destroy Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Become a member of Social Security Works instantly:

Despite Donald Trump's rhetoric about wanting to protect our earned benefits, his and the GOP's proposals repeatedly break that promise. And now, despite the House's ugly, dangerous budget that blatantly cuts Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Trump's own Budget Director called it "a bold effort that follows the leadership of President Trump."

With Republicans in control of Congress and the White House, expanding Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid won't happen right away. But as a member you're providing us with the resources to win today's political battles, and prepare for the fights ahead.

Donate $5 or more today to become a member of Social Security Works!

When you become a Social Security Works member you will:

We're not going to stop fighting. And we want you by our side.

Subject: First Black valedictorian in 110 years denied honors

Jasmine Shepard should have been the first Black valedictorian at Cleveland High School in Mississippi in its 110 years, but she was forced to share that title with a white student who didn't earn the honor.

Jasmine deserves recognition for her achievements. Demand Cleveland High School recognize Jasmine as the sole valedictorian!

Take Action

Earlier this summer, Jasmine Shepard should have become the first Black valedictorian in 110 years at Cleveland High School in Mississippi.1 An amazing achievement considering that Cleveland, MS still has not fully complied with federal desegregation orders from the land mark Brown v. Board of Ed ruling 60 years ago.2 But Jasmine was denied this honor when she was forced to share it with a white student who did not qualify for it. To add insult to injury, she was even asked to walk behind the white student at graduation and give her speech second.

Since filing a lawsuit against the school district a few weeks ago, Jasmine and her family have been the target of a torrent of racist and hateful messages.3 Messages that are too sickening and hateful to be shared here. This whole incident exemplifies the barriers that Black girls and women face - when we work twice as hard we get half the credit, and when we speak out about that unfairness we get flooded with hateful messages.

In a society that regularly invalidates the experiences and achievements of Black girls like Jasmine, it's important that we fight to give Black women the recognition they deserve.

Demand school principal Steven Craddock and supervisor Jacquelyn Thigpen recognize sole valedictorian honors for Jasmine Shepard!

Denying Jasmine the right to be sole valedictorian of Cleveland High School and the flood of hateful messages directed at her are part of a larger trend of robbing Black girls of the education and resources they deserve as well as incriminating them. In recent years Black girls have been experiencing increased rates of criminalization in schools. Black girls make up only 16 percent of girls enrolled in school but makeup 33 percent of girls with school-related arrests, and in some places, like New York, Black girls are expelled at 53 times the rate for white girls.45 According to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Education, nationally Black girls are suspended six times more than white girls.

This criminalization of Black girls is exemplified in recent incidents that sparked national outrage, including Kiera Wilmot, the 16-year-old Florida girl expelled for a harmless science experiment6; Dajerria Becton, the 15-year-old girl tossed and pinned to the ground by a McKinney, Texas, police officer during a pool-party squabble7; and Shakara, the 16-year-old girl dragged out of her seat and thrown across a South Carolina classroom over a cell phone.8

These Black girls know all too well that they must often navigate through a landscape that reinforces multidimensional stereotypes, discrimination, and debilitating narratives about their Black femininity. Recognizing Jasmine as the sole valedictorian is a small but crucial step to changing these harmful narratives about Black girls. Jasmine Shepard should be recognized for the incredible work she's done to become the first Black student to ever earn valedictorian honors in Cleveland, Mississippi.

Demand school principal Steven Craddock and supervisor Jacquelyn Thigpen recognize sole valedictorian honors for Jasmine Shepard!

Subject: Nooooo on Trumpcare!

Mitch McConnell and his bruised ego keep coming back for more. Despite multiple failed attempts to force through Trumpcare, McConnell held an emergency meeting last night to try to revive the bill again.

We will not let millions of Americans lose vital healthcare because Mitch McConnell is too embarrassed to admit he couldn't kill Obamacare.

Call Senator Rob Portman at (202) 224-3353. Use this sample script to tell him it's past time for Republicans to let go of their obsession with destroying Obamacare.

Hello, my name is Munsup calling from 45431 in Beavercreek. Trumpcare has failed multiple times because Americans want to keep Obamacare. Don't replace it. Don't repeal it. Leave Obamacare alone and move on.

After you've finished your call(s), please fill out this form and let us know how it went.

Can't call? Getting a busy signal? Send an urgent letter to your Republican senator(s) demanding that he leave Obamacare alone and move on.

McConnell is still trying to find a proposal that both conservative and moderate GOP senators can agree on, but the Republican party is a hot mess right now. In addition to congressional in-fighting, Donald Trump changes his position on healthcare legislation every few hours.

Trumpcare continues to fail because of us, Munsup. The GOP has wanted to kill Obamacare for years, but sustained opposition and pressure from constituents has divided the party. We cannot let up now.

Call Senator Rob Portman at (202) 224-3353. Tell him no repeal, no replacement. Just leave Obamacare alone. Click here and tell us how it went.

URGENT: Make a call today: Protect the Affordable Care Act

Trumpcare is dead, but this fight is not over. Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are now trying to partially repeal the Affordable Care Act without replacing it. That's even more dangerous than passing Trumpcare. Key Senate Republicans need to hear from us today.

URGENT: Make a call today: Protect the Affordable Care Act

Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are so desperate for a win on health care that they just introduced legislation that would partially repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without replacing it.1 McConnell has promised a vote on the bill next week.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, Republicans' new ACA repeal bill would strip 17 million people of their health coverage in the first year and leave 32 million people uninsured by 2026.2

Our activism worked to stop Trumpcare twice. It can work again now to block Republicans' reckless clawbacks. Will you call now to help keep the pressure on?

Tell key Republican senators: Block all attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Click here for a script and the number to call.

Without sufficient Republican support, McConnell delayed his Trumpcare push on Monday and then immediately pivoted to a new strategy – repeal the ACA without introducing a health plan to replace it. Now, McConnell is twisting arms to get several Senate Republicans who withheld their support for Trumpcare to back his disastrous partial ACA repeal and delay bill.

Republicans' partial ACA repeal bill would:

  • Roll back Medicaid expansion
  • End health care subsidies that help people purchase health insurance
  • Cut taxes for the wealthy by removing pre-tax deduction caps on Health Savings Accounts
  • Eliminate taxes on medical devices and chronic care

Nine Republican senators are already on the record against repealing the ACA without a replacement.
4 They are coming under intense pressure from right-wing extremists, including the Koch brothers, who are determined to gut our health care and social safety by any means necessary. We must continue to build massive opposition to make sure they hold the line.

Together, we have made more than 63,000 calls and sent more than 650,000 petition signatures to Congress opposing Trumpcare. Now we need your help again to protect the ACA.

Make a call today to make sure key Republican senators refuse to support their party's cruel and heartless partial ACA repeal bill. Click on the link below for a script and the number to call.

OMG this weekend was amazing! On behalf of more than 100,000 UltraViolet members who've been pushing the U.S. Golf Association to move the 2017 Women's Open from Trump's Bedminster golf course, we protested at the event.

He saw us. He was mad. And he tweeted about it.

Here's how it went down:

--First, more than 30 UltraViolet members and allies held a rally outside of the golf resort.

--Then, they set up a motorcade--with cars that had signs like "This is a sexual predator's golf course"--that drove along the path audiences used to head to the Women's Open. They were followed by a truck that read Trump's infamous Access Hollywood quote. And they kept going despite being stopped by New Jersey State Police for protesting.

--Next, and this is probably the best part, a handful of those UltraViolet members went inside the golf course, waited until the final round until Trump himself showed up, and--right in front of him and tons of press--silently took off their shirts to reveal purple shirts that read "USGA: Dump sexist Trump."

--And finally, after hours of protesting out in the heat, and after they knew he'd seen them, they went out for ice cream!

Here are just a few of hundreds of press hits:

Some tweets!

UltraViolet members pulled these actions off with allies like CREDO and the New Jersey Working Families Party amid often-violent Trump supporters--some of whom showed up the day before. Because, as Hope S. (one of the UltraViolet members who confronted Trump) said: "This is how we take on Trump. We stay visible. We stay bold. We stay united."

Because of UltraViolet members, hundreds of thousands of people were reminded that associating with Trump is an endorsement of his behavior. Neither Trump nor the USGA should get away with their actions in the public eye, so UltraViolet members made sure they didn't.

And none of this would have been possible without thousands of UltraViolet members teaming together to take action. Thank you for speaking out.
