September 16, 1974

A federal judge dismissed all charges against American Indian Movement (AIM) leaders Dennis Banks and Russell Means stemming from the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

On February 27, 1973, AIM and supporters seized control of Wounded Knee to draw attention to corruption and conditions on the Pine Ridge (Lakota Sioux) reservation.

Wounded Knee was the site where, on December 29, 1890, over 200 Sioux men, women and children were mercilessly gunned down by U.S. cavalry.

* CALLING ALL POLITICALLY INVOLVED CITIZENS IN THE MIAMI VALLEY *

Mark your calendars for SATURDAY, SEPT 23rd, 2017

Have you started to become more involved in political activism lately, maybe even for the first time in your life? Are you working with the Indivisible movement, perhaps, or engaged in supporting local political campaigns? Have you been calling, texting, or visiting your elected officials? Would you like to take the next step in making the changes in our communities that we want to see?

If you are a leader, a doer, or even just an concerned citizen wanting to make real change… then this training is for YOU

THE COMMUNITY RIGHTS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE WORKSHOP is coming to the Miami Valley for the FIRST time this month, on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd, 2017

This day long event is a unique opportunity to receive training from dedicated and professional activists who have been on the front lines of advancing this transformative approach to community governing.

The workshop is the creation of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF), and is an eye-opening, Ohio-focused program designed to bring a more focused and effective approach for those working for political change in their communities.

CELDF has been working across the country for decades now, helping communities take the power back from the corporations who have usurped our rights as Americans as a self-governing citizenry. The workshop has been derived from their effective, game-changing "Democracy Schools," which have been transforming local political organizing around the country (and now the world) for over two decades now.

*HELP MAKE REAL CHANGE IN YOUR COMMUNITY*

For just $50, you will receive an entire day of training, as well as a large manual containing all the information you will need as you take your newfound knowledge back to your community, and to your respective causes.

These are extraordinary times we are in today, as we face an emergency situation, politically and environmentally. CELDF provides useful insights and some of the tools necessary for meeting those challenges effectively, and helping people organize to ensure the communities they live in are ones that sustain and support their principles of social, economic and environmental justice and sustainability.

JOIN US for this unique and exciting opportunity to elevate your political organizing efforts from a 1.0 to 2.0 level. This isn't just about resistance, but about pro-active, effective transformation of our work, about working FOR the kinds of communities we want to live in, not just fighting against the forces that threaten that.

Whatever your issue may be…environmental, labor rights, media, racial justice, etc…there's something to learn and use from the kinds of legal and organizational insights provided through the work of CELDF.

The times are calling for this kind of transformative effort. Please consider joining us in this critical fight.

Subject: America, Honor your Promise

America, Honor your Promise

When a US citizen adopts a child from overseas, they become American in every way but the one that matters the most to their future – citizenship. If America values family, then Americans must value each and every American child.

We live in a new era, one filled with fear, uncertainty, anxiety. How we manage the roller coaster of these emotions is something I struggle with every day. I am many things - an American, a sister, an immigrant, the daughter of a brave veteran, a Christian, an adoptee, but what brings me to my knees, what keeps me up at night is this…

https://gallery.mailchimp.com/d79d1d5c5ba3eec76b40e71c8/images/937a07d6-99d7-435c-a795-d012f842f568.jpg

"Even though I was adopted by US citizens as a child, I could be deported to Iran. I was adopted by U.S. citizens from Iran at the age of 2. My father was a hero. A Lt. Colonel in the Air Force who fought for his country. He paid the price to preserve our freedom on the battlefield and as a POW. When he returned home to live the American dream he never imagined I would be deprived of what he risked his life to protect. I live in fear of losing my job, my family, and the only country I have ever known."

Who let this happen?

The fault lies with Congress. For it is Congress that decided all adopted children would NOT BE EQUAL. Congress believes that NOT ALL AMERICAN CHILDREN have the right to be American. In 2000, Congress passed a law that protects some but not all internationally adopted children. In fact, an estimated 30,000-50,000 children adopted by US Citizens from overseas were intentionally excluded by Congress from this protection. We know that the majority of these adoptees are people of color and over 1/2 are Asian American.

How can you help?

ARC must raise $5,000 to support two Days of Action in Washington DC
to advocate for the Adoptee Citizenship Act, legislation that will grant citizenship to ALL adoptees. Support us in winning citizenship for all adoptees.

Arpaio Pardon challenged legally; petition for continued prosecution by a private attorney, in lieu of Trumps dept of injustice. See

Arpaio pardon --- unconstitutional?!

Descriptions of Arpaio's conduct as a law officer reveal a despicable individual and behavior that grossly violates not merely standards of civil liberty but of basic human rights - as well as ordinary criminal law protecting persons - so difficult to enforce when law officers are the perpetrators. The more I read about his conduct, the more it appears to me that Arpaio should be prosecuted to the hilt through public and private legal action to reveal to all and punish severely a sociopath and monster whose vile acts were tolerated far too long; whose chronic, sadistic violation and torture of the weak and unprotected went unpunished.  By extension, this being the man POTUS has praised and attempted to release from any liability under the law, Donald Trump is inexorably stained by the monstrosity of Arpaio's abuses. Moreover, Trump's Department of Justice, letting Arpaio completely off, proceeds on another track yet towards the promotion of injustice.

But private attorneys have taken up the cause to pursue Arpaio, including advocacy of the position that his pardon was unconstitutional. Here is an informative article in SLATE, with additionally informative links:

Subject: FW: Watch: Rev. Barber on how to stop white supremacy

As Rev Barber states we must all stand up and take note of the systemic policies and changes that are being employed (that support the KKK, Nazis and white supremacy alt-right agendas), instead of focusing only on statures and flags.  TRAITOR Trump and his corrupt regime are employing serious policies behind closed doors that are designed to destroy America, and that makes his handler in Russia President Putin very happy.  WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

-----Forwarded Message: From MoveOn onbehalf of Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II; Pres. & Sr. Lecturer, Repairers of the Breach-----

Donald Trump is not the first politician to openly stoke racism and hatred.

He is a part of a much larger system of white supremacy that is reinforced in our nation election after election.

In a new video, I share my thoughts on why we need to dig deeper to address structural racism—and how we move forward.  You can click here to watch it and share it with friends.

Rev. Barber sets the record straight on white supremacy.

It's important to pull down Confederate symbols—many of which were erected as monuments to white supremacy during the Jim Crow era, decades after the Civil War. And we must also focus on the policy violence of voter suppression, attacks on immigrants, and denial of access to health care and living wages, which continue to oppress communities of color and the poor.

White supremacy is about maintaining power through the politics of division and oppression—and it impacts everyone, Black, brown, or white.

Advancing a moral agenda to confront and take down white supremacy in all its forms is work we all can do together. As I and my colleagues at Repairers of the Breach tour the country with the new #PoorPeoplesCampaign, the diversity of the communities committed to reviving the heart of democracy gives me hope.

His publications include contributor, “Unspeakable suffering - the humanitarian impact of nuclearweapons” (2013), and author, “The Legality of Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons: A Guide to the Historic Opinion of the International Court of Justice” (1998). He has additionally published articles and op-eds in journals and newspapers including the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the World Policy Journal, and Newsday.

Jackie Cabasso is Executive Director of Western States Legal Foundation in Oakland, California. A leading voice for nuclear abolition, she has been involved in nuclear disarmament, peace and environmental advocacy locally, nationally and internationally for more than 35 years. She was a “founding mother” of the Abolition 2000 Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons in 1995. Since 2007, she has served as North American Coordinator for Mayors for Peace. She currently serves as National Co-convener for United for Peace and Justice. Jackie received the International Peace Bureau’s 2008 Sean MacBride Peace Award, and Agape Foundation’s 2009 Enduring Visionary Prize.

Click Here to watch a short interview with Jackie Cabasso at the United Nations on July 7, 2017, immediately following the historic vote on the Ban Treaty.

On December 22, 2016, President-elect Trump tweeted: “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes”.

On July 7, 2017, at the United Nations, the majority of the world’s countries
adopted a historic treaty to prohibit the possession, development, testing, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons. The vote, by 122 to 1, unambiguously demonstrates that most of the world has indeed come to its senses regarding nuclear weapons. The treaty opens for signature on September 20 at United Nations headquarters in New York, during the High-Level Segment of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, where heads of state, foreign ministers andother representatives of governments are expected to publicly sign the treaty. Fifty countries must sign and ratify the treaty for it to enter into force.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons represents the total repudiation of nuclear deterrence by most of the states that don’t possess or rely on nuclear weapons. But the US and the eight other nuclear-armed states boycotted the negotiations, along with Japan, Australia, South Korea and all but one of the 28 NATO member states (The Netherlands) – all countries under the US nuclear umbrella. In a joint statement following the vote, the US, France and the United Kingdom declared: “We do not intend to sign, ratify or ever become party to [the Treaty].” Meanwhile, nuclear tensions have risen to levels not seen for decades.

While the Ban Treaty negotiations were taking place in the United Nations, two floors up in the same building, in an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the United States was threatening military action against North Korea, in response to its July 4 missile test.

We must keep both realities – the promise of the Ban Treaty and growing dangers of nuclear war – fully in mind as we develop strategies to accomplish the urgent goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

What does the Ban Treaty mean in our sharply divided world? How can we best utilize it in the United States to stigmatize nuclear weapons and delegitimize the doctrine of nuclear deterrence? How can we move from prohibition to disarmament?
