Subject: BREAKING: Jeff Sessions announces DACA is ending.
|
Jeff Sessions just announced that the Trump administration will end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals DACA.1 Today, more than ever our communities must continue to fight back against the Trump regime. DACA currently protects over 800,000 young immigrants from being deported. It allows immigrants to stay in the U.S., live with their families, work, go to school, and thrive in their communities. Without such a program, millions of families will be torn apart.
But there's more: Trump is refusing to extend the Temporary Protected Status program for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have sought safety here in the U.S. from harm, climate disaster, violence in their home country. Many Haitian immigrants and other Black immigrants benefit from this program. It is expected to expire in January. When it expires, many of these immigrants will be immediately deported -- forcing many to live in fear. There is already bipartisan support for the extension of TPS. But not for Haitian immigrants. The Trump administration has even said, "Haitians should be prepared to go home."2 No one should have to live in that kind of fear. There is no time to waste -- Congress must act quickly to protect all immigrants.
Since the start of Trump’s occupation in the White House, he has laid out an agenda that harms immigrants. It began with the executive orders to strip funds from Sanctuary Cities and issuing travel bans that target Muslim immigrants. We cannot forget the Trump administration is determined to build a border wall. One of the country’s largest private prison companies GEO Group received one of the first contracts from the Trump administration that resulted in the opening of a large Texas detention center for children and families. All of this is happening right on the heels of Trump abusing his power and pardoning former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio who was just convicted weeks ago for human rights abuses. He is a known racist who spent his entire tenure as sheriff racially profiling Latinx communities. But at every turn, people have fought back: blocking the travel ban, stalling the funding of the border wall, and cities filing lawsuits to protect Sanctuary Cities. So we know together we will continue to win each and every battle.
Trump's agenda is all part of a larger racist, white supremacist agenda to get rid of communities of color, and Black and Brown immigrants. Congress must stop Trump now. Congress must put forth the effort to not allow Trump use immigrants as pawns for his agenda to build a wall and must stop the increased policing. Their silence must end today.
Sign the petition to demand Congress pass the DREAM Act and extend TPS.
Trump does not care about any immigrant. He wants to get rid of every immigrant and their families. This is a clear attack on all Black and Brown immigrants regardless of their status. Congress can no longer stay on the sidelines and let Trump continue his vicious attack on immigrants. For years, people have been on the frontlines pushing for change that will end the discrimination and violence against immigrants. The reality is, more needs to be done to ensure all immigrants are protected. Congress must not exploit immigrants to promote Trump's agenda for building a wall or increasing funding for harsher policing and law enforcement. Instead, the legislation must reflect the justice our communities. We must end all criminalization of Black and Brown people. Every single person deserves the right to freely live their lives with dignity and without shame. This means, no ban, no wall, no deportations, no detention centers, #DefendDACA #SaveTPS, pass the DREAM Act, and protect our communities.

Subject: Just Announced: Trump attacks immigrant kids
It's being reported that, in a stunning act of cruelty even for him, Trump will terminate key parts of President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program effective six months from now, upending the lives of 800,000 young people.
These DACA recipients – often referred to as DREAMers -- registered with the government and passed background checks so they could work, pay taxes, and feel secure in their homes without the fear of deportation. They were brought to the US as children and for many of them this is the only country they've ever really known.
Unfortunately, Trump is stooping even lower to satisfy his anti-immigrant and nativist supporters with his attack on these kids, once again undermining American values in order to feed the bigotry of his extreme base.
But in the six month window Congress can undo this outrage by passing the DREAM Act of 2017, which would provide a path to citizenship for DACA recipients and other young undocumented immigrants who graduate from US high schools and attend college, enter the workforce, or enlist in a military program.
And we even have a head start, because the bill already has bipartisan support!
Sign the petition now: Tell Congress to PASS the DREAM Act of 2017 without delay!>>
Last week, Trump pardoned Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a notorious national symbol of racism who refused court orders to stop his racial profiling in his zealous multi-year campaign of persecution against Latino communities.
One week later, Trump is throwing MORE red meat to racists by going after immigrant kids. And with hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants in and around the Houston region, many DACA recipients and their families have been directly impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey ... and now Trump is disgustingly kicking them while they're down.
Many on the anti-immigrant Right who have been fighting against DACA since Day One have focused their criticism on the way in which it was done – with an executive order by President Obama. They have claimed that the real problem was just that Congress didn't pass the law – so now it's up to Congress to call their bluff and pass the DREAM Act.
Tell Congress to pass the DREAM Act now>>
In the Senate, the DREAM Act is sponsored by Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) ... we need to demand that the Senate make this bipartisan bill a priority, to get relief to the DREAMers who need it.
From: Rudy Fichtenbaum; AAUP President
Subject: Trump Is Wrong to Eliminate DACA
The AAUP denounces in the strongest possible terms the decision by the Trump administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). This decision marks a continuation of the anti-immigrant racist policies that the administration has supported from the start.
Many of our members come from families that immigrated to the US. Their forebears came to the US for the same reason that today’s immigrants do, for a better life for their families, especially their children. But the Trump administration, feeding off the fears and insecurity of many Americans, has used the issue of undocumented workers, along with racism and anti-Semitism, to divide people and disguise the real causes of the declining standards of working people, including working people of color.
DACA, which provides renewable two-year work permits for immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children, was created by President Obama after the Republican-led House of Representatives refused to act on immigration. About 1.9 million undocumented young people are eligible to apply for the DACA program. Nearly 800,000 had their request for DACA status granted in 2016. Of those who have DACA status, about 576,000 are enrolled in college. In other words, an overwhelming majority of those granted DACA status are our students.
One of the major factors that makes American higher education a world class system is the diversity of our faculty and students. We owe it to these students and their families, as well as to other undocumented young people, to speak out against this action in the strongest manner possible. We call on our members to urge Congress to act immediately to undo President Trump's action and allow these young people to remain in our classrooms.
We also urge Congress to enact a comprehensive immigration reform policy that will welcome immigrants to our shores--those fleeing political persecution and violence as well as those who simply seek a better life, regardless of their race, religion, or national origin.

AALDEF Denounces Ending of
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program;
Calls for Legislative Solution
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) was appalled to hear Attorney General Jeff Sessions announce this morning that the Trump administration is ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protection for the roughly 800,000 young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Under this 2012 program initiated by President Obama, individuals were granted a temporary reprieve from deportation and work authorization if they met age and residence requirements, and completed a certain level of education and military service. Without DACA, the United States will face enormous human and economic costs.
In response to today's announcement, Margaret Fung, AALDEF Executive Director, said: “After several days of anxiety, DACA beneficiaries and their allies are struck by the cruelty of this action. Despite President Trump’s promise to treat DACA recipients with ‘great heart,’ his administration has decided to pursue a heartless and blatant attack on the young immigrants and their families who contribute to and strengthen our country every day.”
As an Asian American civil rights organization, AALDEF has been providing direct legal representation to Asian undocumented youth and has trained pro bono attorneys to take on DACA cases. Annie Wang, a staff attorney in AALDEF's Immigrant Access to Justice program, said: “As a formerly undocumented person who has worked closely with individuals to determine whether they were eligible for DACA, I’ve seen firsthand how this program has transformed the lives of my clients. Thanks to DACA, these young people have been able to pursue higher education, find meaningful employment, help their families, and otherwise more fully contribute to our society.”
In a memorandum issued today, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will reject all new requests filed after Sept. 5, 2017 but will continue to process pending renewal or initial requests, as well as the renewal requests of DACA recipients whose current benefits will be expiring on March 5, 2018.
During this period, AALDEF will advise existing DACA clients about other immigration options and assist eligible individuals with renewing their deferred action and work authorization. We also plan to collaborate with community groups to provide information to individuals who already have DACA.
As the DACA program is being wound down over the next six months, AALDEF is calling on Congress to move forward legislation that will protect undocumented youth. A long-term legislative fix for DACA recipients and the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States would make communities and our country safer and stronger.
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is a national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.

Emergency petition: 800,000 youth need your help urgently!
Congress must deliver a clean, stand-alone DREAM Act to provide legal protections for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants so cruelly impacted by the Trump administration's decision to end the popular Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Sign the petition
Donald Trump just put more than 800,000 immigrant youth at risk by ending the popular Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.1
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke said in a statement that no people currently on DACA will be affected for six months "so Congress can have time to deliver on appropriate legislative solutions."2 That's why we need to reach lawmakers immediately.
Click here to sign our emergency petition: Demand that Congress deliver a clean, stand-alone DREAM Act to provide legal protections for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants.
DACA has protected young people who came to this country as children and have deep roots in our communities. Now, they are facing an uncertain future because of Trump's callous plan.
The politics—not just the morality—are on our side. We can't let this opportunity to pass bipartisan legislation to protect immigrant youth slip away.
Trump is facing fierce resistance from immigrants, their families and allies, business leaders, and municipal leaders across the country.3,4,5 And now some Republicans—including House Speaker Paul Ryan—are starting to speak out.6
But speaking out is not enough. Congress must act.
Will you sign and share our emergency petition and stand up for 800,000 immigrant youth? Congress must use its power to stop Trump—now.
Immigration arrests have increased 38% in Trump's first six months in office, with more than half a million people in detention centers awaiting immigration hearings.7 These arrests and deportations rip families and communities apart, and Trump continues to use inflammatory, anti-immigrant rhetoric that is being repeated across the country.
Every member of Congress should act swiftly to pass a clean, stand-alone DREAM Act. Inaction or opposition from members of Congress is unacceptable and will be viewed as support for Trump’s cruel ending of DACA.
And any bill that uses immigrant youth as bargaining chips—putting more deportation agents on the streets to round up and jail Dreamers' parents, friends, family members or funding Trump's wasteful border wall—is a non-starter. Congress must reject those bills.
Only a clean, stand-alone DREAM Act will do. We need courageous action by Congress to counter Trump's cowardice.
Hurry! Click here to add your name to the petition demanding that Congress take swift action, and then pass it along to your friends.

Subject: DACA: Halted Dreams for Nearly A Million DREAMers
This is cruel, even for Donald Trump: he just ended DACA, a program that has allowed nearly 800,000 DREAMERs to work and live their lives without fear of deportation. Now these young people who have called the United States home are at risk for deportation, and our communities are at risk of being torn apart. We’re mobilizing, because DREAMers are our neighbors, friends, and community leaders, and America is better than this decision. We need your help!
Can you call Speaker Paul Ryan’s office at 866-575-9410 and tell him to keep DREAMers from being deported by passing a DREAM Act that provides a permanent solution for immigrant youth without adding money to Trump’s deportation force?
Immigrants make America great, and DREAMers — young immigrants who have called America home for most of their lives — matter. Passing the DREAM Act, a permanent solution for DREAMers, is the right thing to do, and Speaker Ryan knows it. Yet he has caved again and again to Trump’s demands, standing aside to allow more deportations and increase the funding for immigration enforcement instead of doing his job and passing bills that will fix our broken immigration system, bills like the DREAM Act. But this time, he can’t stand by. We won’t let him.
It’s time to tell Speaker Ryan that inaction is unacceptable. Will you call his office and tell him to step up for DREAMers and immediately pass a DREAM Act without adding money for Trump’s deportation agenda?
Making a call only takes two minutes. Call 866-575-9410 and say:
“Hi. I’m [your name] from [where you live], and I’m calling on Speaker Ryan to protect immigrant youth and pass DREAM Act legislation that provides a permanent solution for DREAMers without adding money to Trump’s deportation force.”
A call is the first step to supporting the people affected by DACA’s elimination. We’ll be in touch soon with more ways you can help.

Since TRAITOR Trump is to COWARDLY to act I strongly encourage Congress to act and do the right thing for our fellow AMERICANS.

From: Monique Teal, Daily Kos
After weeks of holding the futures of nearly 800,000 undocumented youth hostage, Jeff Sessions officially announced today that the Trump administration has rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Unless Congress takes action, in just six short months, DACA recipients will be at risk for deportation.
DACA allowed immigrant youth brought to the U.S. as children to work legally, apply for driver’s licenses, attend school and live free from the fear of deportation. It was successful, life-changing, and necessary for hundreds of thousands of our undocumented family members, friends and neighbors who call the U.S. home.
Sign on today to join the fight to protect undocumented youth.
JOIN THE FIGHT
Rescinding DACA is a cruel, infuriating setback but the fight isn't over. The Dream Act of 2017 is bipartisan legislation that would allow around 1.5 million U.S.-raised immigrant youth to earn lawful permanent residence and American citizenship if they:
- Are longtime residents who came to the U.S. as children;
- Graduate from high school or obtain a GED;
- Pursue higher education, work lawfully for at least three years, or serve in the military;
- Pass security and law enforcement background checks and pay a reasonable application fee;
- Demonstrate proficiency in the English language and a knowledge of United States history; and
- Have not committed a felony or other serious crimes and do not pose a threat to our country.
Versions of the Dream Act have been introduced at least ten times before, starting in 2001. They have passed either the House or Senate, but not both in the same Congressional session.
This version of the bill improves upon previous legislation. It expands eligibility and raises the age of entry requirement to 18 years of age—allowing more undocumented youth to qualify. It also works with current DACA recipients to reduce some barriers as they work towards citizenship. Without legislation like the Dream Act, there is no pathway to citizenship for undocumented youth living in the U.S.
Sign the petition: Congress must pass the Dream Act of 2017.
SIGN ON TODAY
This is not a perfect bill. Language requirements are xenophobic and Black and Brown communities are policed more so than white communities, increasing the likelihood of having a criminal record. And we'll have to fight nativists every step of the way as they attempt to add border enforcement and aim to criminalize the parents of the youth the bill protects. But when we win, we'll be protecting hundreds of thousands of youth who, as citizens, will continue to fight for everyone left behind.
Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA 40th District) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL 27th District) have introduced the bill in the House of Representatives, and Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have introduced a companion bill in the Senate. For this bill to finally pass without anti-migrant amendments, we'll need heavy, sustained grassroots pressure. And with DACA rescinded, it can't happen soon enough.
Our partners at United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the nation, remind us that the only reason we won DACA is because thousands of undocumented youth had the courage to demand it. Let's make sure we have their backs as they once again move this country forward.
Sign if you agree: Congress must pass the Dream Act of 2017.
