August 28, 1963

Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of half a million gathered on the Mall in Washington, D.C. They gathered there for jobs and freedom.

1983: Three hundred thousand marched in Washington on the 20th anniversary of MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech for the second
"March on Washington for Jobs, Peace and Freedom."

Our hearts are breaking for the victims of Hurricane Harvey--the Houston area has now seen an unprecedented amount of rain and flooding, causing several deaths and leaving thousands displaced.

If you are wondering how to help those in need after Harvey, here are a few options:

  1. To give to immediate relief efforts, you can donate to any of these local Texas food banks listed in Texas Monthly.1
  2. Families with young children, the homeless, and people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable right now. To help affected families, you can donate to Driscoll Children's Hospital and the Texas Diaper Bank. To help the homeless, you can give to the Houston Coalition for the Homeless, and to help with evacuations for people with disabilities, you can give to Portlight.2
  3. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has also established a local Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Here's how to donate online or by mail.
  4. To help animals impacted by the floods, you can support Austin Pets Alive!, also recommended by Texas Monthly.

Officials are predicting that the flooding will get worse.3 Many people in Texas have lost everything and it will take years to rebuild their lives. No amount of help is too little or too much.

This is obviously just a partial list. If you'd like to review other options, check out these articles from the Houston ChronicleTexas Monthly, and the Huffington Post.

Sparked by the events in Charlottesville a few weeks ago, a large coalition of clergy, individuals, and activists launched a 110+ mile march from Charlottesville to D.C. yesterday, to be followed by a sustained encampment and further actions in D.C. in the weeks ahead. The marchers are demanding the removal of officials who enable white supremacists, including President Trump, along with the undoing of policies that embolden and protect them.

The march, which is lead by Charlottesville faith leaders, students and community leaders and by veteran organizers from the Movement for Black Lives, Women's March, Working Families Party, United We Dream, Color of Change, and many others, stepped off Monday August 28 from Charlottesville. They'll be on the road for about 10 days, arriving in DC September 6th to start the next phase of the action. Jewish Voice for Peace is supporting the march and we're organizing a delegation of JVP members to join.

If you are planning to join the march or the DC action, please let us know by filling out this quick form here. You can join the march for just a day or two, or support the action in DC later in September. We'll connect you with other JVPers and support as best we can.

You can read about the march so far here in Reuters, Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, and follow the marchers on Twitter or Facebook.

To get updates about the march, sign up to join, or to support with monetary or supply donations, head to their website at cville2dc.us.

From the organizers:

What are we doing and why?

We are marching from Charlottesville to DC to demonstrate our commitment to confronting white supremacy wherever it is found. We can no longer wait for Donald Trump or any elected official to face reality and lead. We are uniting right now to reckon with America's long history of white supremacy and to demand leadership that will side with those of us who will no longer abide it.

What do we want?

This is a time for us to live our values and confront white supremacy in our government and in our history. We are fighting for each other and our common humanity, demanding leadership that will actively fight this ideology of hate, and calling for the removal of all those, including the president, who refuse to do so. Not only will we not accept white supremacy in the White House but we demand an agenda that repairs the damage done by its legacy.

I know lots of JVPers are out in the streets fighting white supremacy locally in Boston, Durham, the Bay Area and around the country. So glad to be part of this community, amidst everything going on right now.

P.S. ICYMI, here's JVP's statement about the racism and antisemitism on display in Charlottesville earlier this month and an interview with a member who was on the ground protesting in Charlottesville.

Sign up here to receive a daily email round up of news of interest to JVP, highlights of JVP's work and members in the news, as well as opinion and analysis highlights, sent at 9 am every M-F. If you have suggestions for things to include please submit them here.

Subject: FW: Top Intelligence Officer makes SHOCKING Trump claim

This TREASONOUS LYING INCOMPETENT excuse for our President is going to get a lot of Americans and other nationals killed if he is not removed from office!  The Republicans have the power to move for impeachment but they are too cowardly to act against what they know to be the right thing to do.  The Democrats are running in as many ways as there are possible instead of really focusing and rallying the nation against the national threat of "Traitor Trump".  Most people know or believe that he is mentally unstable and a threat to our national security! So when will our Congressional, intelligence and military officials take the required actions to protect all Americans and perhaps the world?

FW: Top Intelligence Officer makes SHOCKING Trump claim

Donald Trump is NOT fit to be President of the United States. Click here if you agree >>

Former Intelligence Chief James Clapper just sounded the alarm:

I just find this extremely disturbing. I really question his ability to be -- his fitness to be -- in this office. -James Clapper

Sign your name if you think Trump is NOT fit to serve:

I AGREE →

Clapper is SPOT ON. Trump's exhibited downright erratic behavior since the very beginning of his campaign.

But now that Trump actively sympathizes with white supremacists and spends most of his days attacking the media on Twitter, we must make it loud and clear: Trump is NOT fit to serve.

If you agree Trump is not fit to be President, make it known right now:

Donald Trump is not fit to be President!

We must fight back every day as Democrats and as Americans if our country is going to survive Trump's Presidency.

Subject: Add your name: We reject the Nashville Statement

Yesterday, a group of religious-right activists released a new theological statement condemning lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and purporting to excommunicate Christians who affirm them.

The so-called "Nashville Statement" not only claims that "it is sinful to approve of homosexual immorality or transgenderism" - it says that "such approval constitutes an essential departure from Christian faithfulness."

This new statement is making headlines and causing deep pain for LGBT people, so it's time to stand up and show how many Christians repudiate this hateful theology.

Add your name: Christians reject the Nashville Statement's theology of hate.
