First Regula Classes of the Greater Miami Valley Math Circle (GMVMC)

The Greater Miami Valley Math Circle had another successful kick off with an orientation and a short class last Saturday, August 26.

The Math Circle, consisting of three groups: Beginning (grades 5-7), Intermediate (grades 7-9) and advanced (grades 9-12) Groups, having typically classes on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays unless notified otherwise, now have 20 students in the beginning Group; 14 students in the Intermediate Group and 5 students in the Advance Group. Our first regular class will be on Saturday, September 9 at 10:30 am (instead of 11:00 at the Orientation) on the second floor of MM building at Wright State University.

Trying the number of students per Group limited to 15, we have NO more available seats in the Beginning Group, but can accommodate a couple of more students in the Intermediate Group and 10 students in the Advanced Group.

Parents and guardians of older kids are encouraged to apply by filling and mailing the attached registration form to the below address and then come to the first class.

Subject: FW: Seeking Dayton Riverfront Master Plan Input

The Dayton Riverfront Master Plan is officially underway. As you may recall, the Plan will focus on greater downtown’s waterways and explores the tremendous potential our rivers have in enhancing vibrancy, livability, and economic vitality. The study area for this Riverfront Master Plan centers on downtown Dayton and extends along all four waterways: the Great Miami, Mad, and Stillwater rivers and the Wolf Creek.

Last week, we held two public input sessions at the new Downtown Dayton Library as well as some information booths at the Second Street Market and the African American Cultural Festival.  We also plan to have a presence at the Hispanic Heritage Festival in September.  We will continue to seek public input during the month of September.

The Dayton Riverfront Master Plan Steering Committee would like to offer the opportunity to come give a brief presentation on the Plan and provide an update as well as get additional community input.  If there is an opportunity to get on your neighborhood association or organization’s meeting agenda, we would love the opportunity to come speak with you.  I would also encourage you to take a 10-minute interactive survey to help us learn more on how you use and interact with the rivers at www.daytonriverfrontplan.org if you have not already done so.

DAYTON METRO LIBRARY, REBUILDING TOGETHER DAYTON & WYSO

Dayton
Metro Library is collaborating with Rebuilding Together Dayton and WYSO in a partnership that will not only help low-income seniors have safer homes, it will also preserve and share their unique memories, stories and perspectives on life in the Dayton area.

The
Senior Voices project addresses both the physical and mental well-being of older citizens, particularly residents of West Dayton. Homeowners who qualify for home repair and safety modifications through Rebuilding Dayton Together will be encouraged to participate in interviews conducted by trained volunteers. The recorded Senior Voices stories will be archived as part of the Dayton Metro Library’s Local History collection and air as a radio series on WYSO.

“With
this collaboration, three community-minded organizations are working together to focus attention on the lives of older adults in our area,” said Dave Hicks, Library Volunteer Services Manager. “Rebuilding Together Dayton brings their skills and experience with home rehab, and WYSO brings its commitment to sharing citizen voices. The Dayton Metro Library, which serves older adults in our area through Homebound Delivery, the Lobby Stop Library and many Lifelong Learning initiatives, is recruiting and coordinating volunteers, particularly those age 55 and older. This will be an especially interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunity,” he said.
These
volunteers are needed:

  • HOMEOWNERS who meet the age and income requirements to qualify for Rebuilding Together Dayton’s home safety and efficiency modifications.
  • VOLUNTEERS AGE 55+ who have a story to tell about their lives and the changes they’ve seen in their community.
  • VOLUNTEERS OF ANY AGE to help install materials for safer, more efficient homes.

WYSO Public Radio will train volunteers to collect stories and create a radio and web series in early 2018. General Manager Neenah Ellis said, “We plan to air at least fifty stories in 2018. We expect to hear important and compelling stories about life in the Dayton area.”

Rebuilding
Together Dayton is an affiliate of the largest volunteer home repair organization in the nation, providing home rehabilitation for low-income Dayton area homeowners, particularly the elderly, so they can live safely and independently in their own homes. Typical home repairs and accessibility modifications include carpentry, electrical work, plumbing repair, painting, grab bars, handrails, trash removal and yard work.

The
Senior Voices collaboration received a Del Mar Social Innovation Award for Older Adult Programming from The Dayton Foundation’s DMH-Fund. The award recognizes innovations from area nonprofits that are working to address issues faced by older adults.

From: Wright State Communications on behalf of Cheryl B. Schrader, Ph.D.; President of Wright State University
Subject: [OFFICIAL-L] From the President's Desk

Dear Campus Community,

This week we welcome thousands of new and returning students to our Dayton and Lake Campuses. It is an invigorating time as we enthusiastically begin another academic year with a renewed commitment to transforming the lives of our students and the communities we serve.

We are a university where we measure success not by those we exclude but by those we include. We are a community that commits to creating an environment where every student learns and grows without prejudice, intimidation, or discrimination. Our diversity of perspective, thought, and individuality is our greatest strength.

As we celebrate the beginning of another year, many of us are also wrestling with the impact of the recent actions of others in Charlottesville, Virginia. Acts of racism, anti-Semitism, violence, and hatred continue to exist in our country. Let me be clear: Hateful actions and speech are not welcome at Wright State University. The senior leadership team at Wright State is united—we strongly condemn the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia. This behavior is incongruent with our commitment to creating and sustaining a safe, accepting, and welcoming environment for people of all identities and backgrounds.

My hope is you will join me in doing the following:

  • Be willing to engage in difficult yet civil and productive conversations with others who believe differently than you do;
  • Counter negative speech with positive speech; and
  • Counter hateful action with acts of kindness.

I encourage every member of the Wright State family to shine a light on incidents of violence and hatred. If you experience or become aware of such incidents, you are encouraged to report them via our anonymous reporting system or directly to the Office of Equity and Inclusion by email at oei@wright.edu or telephone at (937) 775-3207.

We are a community that is committed to justice, inclusion, freedom of expression, and civil discourse. We will remain steadfast in our opposition to discrimination in any form.

As an educational institution, we have the ability to transform lives through the varied curricular and co-curricular experiences offered in our local and expanded communities. Please join me in welcoming our new and returning students, staff, faculty, and alumni to a community where everyone is welcome and where we celebrate the contributions that diversity and inclusion bring to our campus and to our lives.
