Trump Supports Plan to Cut Legal Immigration by Half

By PETER BAKER

Legislation would favor immigrants based on skills and education, while curtailing those brought into the country through family ties.

Nissan Workers just started a petition to Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO, Renault-Nissan Alliance

Stand with Nissan Workers now! This campaign of intimidation and pressure from the company must end. Tell Nissan to stop standing in the way of its workers' right to unionize.

Fair Representation Now!

We just started a petition titled Stand with Nissan Workers!

Thousands of Nissan auto workers in Canton, Mississippi—80 percent of whom are African-American—have had enough. They endure dangerous working conditions, bullying by management, punishing production demands, and long hours.

Will you sign the petition to act in solidarity with workers in Mississippi? Workers are set to vote on a union this week, we need your support now!

That's why Nissan Workers will be voting this week on whether to unionize, despite underhanded interference from management. The company is already waging an incredibly hostile campaign of intimidation and pressure against union supporters. By refusing to allow a fair election with lies and manipulation, Nissan is denying Black workers in Canton the fundamental freedom to vote and to therefore have a say in their workplace.

Join us in pledging to tell Nissan that workers have the right to unionize. Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, needs to know how much support workers in Canton have.

Nissan has union representation at every one of its 45 manufacturing plants around the world, except for the three plants in the American South, which consist mostly of Black workers. Southern workers should not be denied the rights that all other Nissan Workers around the globe can exercise.

This campaign of intimidation and pressure from the company must end. Tell Nissan to stop standing in the way of its workers' right to unionize!

Will you pledge to join the fight for fair representation for Black workers?

From: Josh Silver; Director, Represent.Us
Subject: INVITATION: Unrig The System Summit

I have some exciting news. Today we're announcing the first-ever Unrig The System Summit – featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Kerry Washington, Adam McKay; conservative leaders in the anti-corruption movement like John Pudner of Take Back our Republic and Richard Painter, ethics czar for George W. Bush; and progressive leaders including former FEC Chair Ann Ravel and Professor Lawrence Lessig. Will you join us?

The Summit – February 2-4 at Tulane University in New Orleans – is not an ordinary conference. It is not about problems; it is about solutions. It's not about left vs. right; it's about conservatives, progressives and independents crossing partisan and ideological divides, and working together to unrig America's political system. It's about sharing ideas, best practices, building relationships, and advancing concrete, winning strategies.

Registration opens in the fall, but if you're interested in attending, please
go to this website and sign up to get more information on the program, speakers, and registration.

We'll have all kinds of people there: reform leaders, grassroots activists, entertainers, academics, philanthropists and journalists. And it's not just workshops, panels, and (short) keynote speeches. It's going to feature top-level comedians, musicians, celebrities, and plenty of time to self-organize. And it's more than policy advocates: It's tech innovators who are building amazing new technology to improve democracy; and it's leaders of other major issue reforms that are adversely affected by the rigged system.

I hope you can join what promises to be informative, inspiring, and a lot of fun!
Please go to the Summit website and sign up to receive more information.

Looking forward to seeing you in New Orleans

P.S. The event is one week before Mardi Gras, which means the city won't be crowded yet, but it is when the locals start celebrating. It's an awesome time to be in NOLA!

Republicans' ignorant attempts to repeal Obamacare backfired completely. And now, the push for universal healthcare is stronger than ever!!

The U.S. is the only developed nation in the world without single-payer healthcare for all its citizens. It's time we change this and guarantee healthcare as a right, not a privilege.

But in order to make this plan a reality, we need as many supporters as possible to back Bernie's Medicare for All plan. Can you add your name right away?

Subject: The Senate is still serving greedy pharma corporations

We may have defeated Trumpcare, but that doesn't mean Senate Republicans are done trying to exploit the American people. Sen. Mitch McConnell just filed cloture on the OPEN Act, which is an $11.6 billion handout to prescription drug corporations. We're delivering your signatures to every Senate office this week--we need you behind us!

Stand with Social Security Works to oppose another billion dollar giveaway to drug corporations and say no to big pharma monopolies.

You can read more abut the OPEN Act in our original email below.

In 1983, Congress passed a law aimed at spurring innovation for drugs that treat rare diseases, offering tax credits and monopolies as incentives. But, as they so often do, pharmaceutical corporations immediately turned the law into yet another way to extract money from the people's pockets. A year's treatment can cost people with rare diseases more than a house.

Pharmaceutical corporations' ravenous hunger for profits leads to Social Security benefits that are increasingly eroded by medical co-pays and out of pocket expenses. And Congress has a new handout on the way.

Stand with Social Security Works to oppose another billion dollar giveaway to drug corporations and say no to big pharma monopolies.

The greed of the drug companies is boundless. Now, their Washington lobbyists are pushing a new bill―the Orphan Product Extensions Now (OPEN) Act―which would grant drug manufacturers six additional months of exclusivity, the monopoly power that allows the companies to charge as much as they like.

It's estimated that this new law would cost patients and taxpayers up to $11.6 billion over 10 years―padding the pockets of the greedy pharmaceutical industry and ensuring that we continue to pay the highest drug prices in the world!

Former Congressman Henry Waxman of California, the author of the 1982 Orphan Drug Act, had this to say about how drug companies are manipulating the system:

"We're seeing the Orphan Drug Act used in ways that we never anticipated when the law was adopted. In the way people use the word 'orphan status,' it's almost becoming a synonym for a monopoly price."

Stand with Social Security Works to oppose the OPEN Act, yet another billion dollar giveaway to big pharma corporations.

If passed, the bill would allow drug companies to repurpose drugs that are already on the market, giving them "orphan" status. For patients this means competing drugs that might lower prices would be kept off the market, leading to budget busting drug prices for even longer for the people.

Instead of padding the insurance company profits, Congress should be focusing on bills that rein in abuses by drug companies, and make sure people can afford the health care they need.

Together, we're fighting the greedy pharmaceutical industry and their powerful Washington lobbyists.

Thank you,

Michael Phelan; Social Security Works

Tell Congress: Don't give Big Pharma more monopolies

Americans pay the highest pharmaceutical drug prices in the world.1 Now, Congress wants to make the situation worse.

Drug costs are already breaking the bank for tens of millions of Americans. But Big Pharma lobbyists are pushing a bill that would extend pharmaceutical monopolies and let companies exploit sick Americans for profit for an additional six months.2

Pharmaceutical companies are hoping to sneak this measure through as an amendment to must-pass legislation.
That's why we are teaming up with our friends at Social Security Works to make it clear to members of Congress from both parties that we are paying attention and won't stand for more handouts to Big Pharma.

Tell Congress: Don't give Big Pharma longer monopolies. Click here to sign the petition.

Congress originally passed the Orphan Drug Act in 1982 in hopes to make headway against rare diseases. The legislation offered tax credits and monopolies as incentives for companies to produce cures, but Big Pharma has spent the last few decades exploiting the act to rake in big bucks.
3

We need legislators willing to take on Big Pharma and fight to rein in abuses, monopolies and corporate concentration in the drug industry. Instead, some in Congress are pushing a bill that would extend monopoly rights for an additional six months.

In fact, if this bill becomes law, drug companies will be able to take drugs that are already on the market, repurpose them slightly, and call them "orphan" drugs and then hold monopoly rights. Patients would have no access to competing drugs at lower prices. Pharmaceutical giants would reap huge rewards while sick people could go broke trying to pay the bills.
4 We can't let pharmaceutical lobbyists push this toxic proposal without a fight.

Tell Congress: Don't give Big Pharma longer monopolies. Click here to sign the petition.

Big Pharma's business model today is to use exclusive rights to produce certain medicines to charge as much as possible for as long as possible. Companies increasingly outsource innovation to universities or government research while focusing on building monopoly control over patents. The goal is to suck as much money out of people as possible instead of improving their health.

A loud outcry now will send a stern message that Congress should focus on reining in Big Pharma's abuses instead of giving them new loopholes to exploit. Click the link below to sign the petition:

The New White Man's Burden
How can the white man succeed in a world that treats him only as an equal?

Author: Justin Rosario, published on 8/2/2017

In 1899, Rudyard Kipling wrote his famous poem, "The White Man's Burden: The United States and the Philippine Islands". The poem was a call to American imperialism and became one of the many moral justifications for the West to exploit the rest of the world. After all, someone had to civilize all the non-white savages and the white man would just have to shoulder that responsibility.

But that was then and this is now.   (Read more here!)
