August 9, 1943

Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian conscientious objector who reported for induction but refused to serve in the army
of the Third Reich, was publicly beheaded in Berlin.

An American, Gordon Zahn, wrote about Jägerstätter while researching the subject of German Roman Catholics' response to Hitler.

Zahn's book, In Solitary Witness, influenced Daniel Ellsberg's decision to stand against the Vietnam War by bringing the previously secret Pentagon Papers to public attention.

Subject: Resist war with North Korea today!

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea have reached dangerous heights. The Trump Administration continues to avoid direct dialogue with North Korea, instead choosing sanctions and a strong-arm approach to the rapidly escalating situation. At the same time, North Korea is advancing its nuclear and missile capabilities.

What we need now is open dialogue on issues where progress is possible, to build the foundations for successful negotiations on nuclear disarmament. The American Friends Service Committee has worked in North Korea for decades, and we know from experience that diplomacy and nonviolent engagement provide a viable path to peace on the Korean Peninsula.

At this critical time, we need your help. Will you give today to support AFSC's peace building work in North Korea and beyond?

We've been working with other pro-peace groups on this issue, by addressing common humanitarian needs—such as repatriating the remains of U.S. servicemen left in North Korea following the Korean War and reuniting divided Korean and Korean-American families. This strategy offers a path to better relations and releases the pressure that pushes our countries toward conflict.

Please give today to support AFSC's critical peace building efforts. With your help, we can continue to promote diplomatic relations over military action on the Korean Peninsula and across the globe.

Your support is essential to promoting peaceful solutions to today's most pressing conflicts. In this critical moment, we see an opportunity to make a real difference in North Korea and beyond. Please help us continue this important work.

The pastor who preached the morning of President Trump's inauguration just said that "God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong-Un."

Robert Jeffress went on to argue that the Bible "gives the government to the authority to do whatever, whether it's assassination, capital punishment or evil punishment to quell the actions of evildoers."

Asked whether Trump should instead "embody the Sermon on the Mount," Jeffress replied, "absolutely not."

In this moment of national crisis, Christians of all theological and denominational persuasions must stand up and name this rhetoric for what it is: heresy.

Police Unions Exposed

Police Unions Exposed just started a petition titled: "Tell police unions: stop defending Trump for encouraging police brutality."

Here's why this is important:

On Friday, Trump gave a speech to police officers encouraging them to brutalize suspects – and the crowd of officers laughed and cheered. No one booed.

It's outrageous and dangerous. Police departments and law enforcement officials across the country responded by condemning Trump's comments. But the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) -- the largest police union in the country actually defended what Trump said. So did the leader of Cleveland's police union.

Dozens of police unions across the country have remained completely silent, while their police chiefs speak out clearly and forcefully. Police unions are winking and nodding at their members, giving police officers who are supposed to serve and protect a license to be even more violent than they already are.

Margaret, join us in calling out police unions and demanding they denounce police brutality-- or become known for supporting it, like Trump.

Police unions have a long history of defending cops who brutalize, kill, and abuse their power. They fight against common sense reforms and any kind of accountability for police. Now, on top of that, they're sending a dangerous message to the police officers that make up their membership. It threatens the communities that police are sworn to serve and protect, and it puts officers themselves in more danger by further eroding trust in police. Only two police unions have said anything that even comes close to disagreeing with Trump's comments -- and their statements were weak and made excuses for Trump.

After being called out by law enforcement officials, the White House has tried to say it was just a joke, and the Fraternal Order of Police echoed that excuse. It's ridiculous and it flies in the face of everything we know about Trump. He has a long history of inciting violence at his rallies, and praising the leaders of brutal police states. Meanwhile, his Justice Department is doing everything it can to undo any reforms aimed at addressing police violence and improving accountability.

By calling an incitement of police brutality a "joke," Trump and the police unions are really trying to normalize the culture of violence, abuse, and lawlessness that is rampant among police.

By calling them out, we can expose how police unions are cheerleaders and enablers of police brutality, and one of the biggest enemies of police accountability and reform. Join us in calling out the FOP and police unions across the country.

It's the first step to reducing their political power, their ability to stop the common sense policing reforms we desperately need, and their practice of shielding officers who brutalize, kill, and break the law.

Join us in exposing police unions for siding with Trump's incitement of police violence.

Subject: FW: welcome to the team

Congressman Brad Sherman has filed articles of Impeachment (H. Res. 438). Recent polls show that nearly half of voters already support Impeachment of the President now. But, Congress has not acted and won't move forward without additional support from members of both parties.

We need to deliver a powerful message to Congress that the Judiciary Committee must immediately begin hearings on President Trump's Obstruction of Justice and Collusion with Russia. That is why we need 1OO,OOO signatures on our petition to demand Congress begin hearings NOW.

Can you join me and take action?  Visit https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/1ooooo-signatures-needed?sp_ref=326506899.271.182285.e.0.2&source=email-urgent-reply-needed-impeachment-articles-filed-2-3-2&subsource=email-urgent-reply-needed-impeachment-articles-filed-2-3-2&source=email to add your name.

Public support for impeaching President Trump is growing. Americans are tiring of the blatant abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and reckless incompetence. Thank you for stepping up and demanding congressional Republicans take up the Articles of Impeachment filed by Congressman Brad Sherman.

Your voice is joining thousands of others insisting the House Judiciary Committee immediately begin hearings on President Trump's obstruction of justice and collusion with Russia.

Will you take a moment and urge your friends to also take action?

Thank you for taking action – and for holding President Trump accountable for his abuses.

Subject: Trump's deportation machine

You know about Trump's hate driven plans to target immigrants: his expensive, unpopular border wall is just the start. He wants to ramp up deportations, build more detention centers, and hire more enforcement agents. And he'll do it all — if he can get the budget to fund it.

We have to stop him. Tell your members of Congress: Not One Dollar for Trump's anti-immigrant agenda!

Trump and Republicans in Congress are seeking over $6 billion to ramp up Trump's deportation machine.
If Congress approves a budget with these funds, that means more money to terrorize communities, more money to separate families, and more money to detain and deport immigrants — with no regard for their situations. But Congress has the power to stop this, and they need to hear from you. Sign this petition urging your members of Congress to stop funding for detention and deportation from being included in the federal budget.

We've got to end the deportation nightmare that so many immigrant families are suffering from. ICE officials recently stated that during official operations, nearly 70 percent of those detained were not the intended targets — further evidence that this administration is aggressively going after any and all undocumented immigrants. That's hateful, and it's wrong.

We need to stand up for our communities and insist that Not One Dollar in the budget go toward deportation, detention, and harmful immigration enforcement. Add your name right now to fight back against Trump's hateful agenda!

The report directly contradicts Trump administration claims about global warming and concludes that temperatures have risen rapidly since 1980.

Subject: Pharmaceutical industry just lost―but the fight is not over

Before the Senate left on August recess, Social Security Works and our partners achieved a major victory. (And I'm not talking about Trumpcare―though that was huge).

In a 94-1 vote, the Senate reauthorized an FDA "user fee" bill. And at face value, this might not sound like much. But what was important about that bill is that it excluded the pharma-backed OPEN Act―which would have granted drug manufacturers six additional months of monopoly power that would allow the companies to charge as much as they like.

Achieving a bi-partisan victory over the pharmaceutical industry is no small feat. And it's thanks to your hard work and activism. But our work is far from over. We're drawing a line in the sand against pharmaceutical monopolies!

In 2015 alone, the five largest drug corporations raked in more than $50 BILLION in profits. And at a time when 37% of the average Social Security check goes toward out-of-pocket health care costs, we must keep fighting to protect the American people.

Donate to Social Security Works today to keep fighting the greedy out-of-control pharmaceutical industry.

The one "no" vote on the Senate bill was our champion U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. Sanders voted against the bill because it "does nothing to lower drug prices and is a giveaway to the pharmaceutical industry," according to a Sanders spokesperson.

And Bernie's right! We may have stopped Pharma from expanding their monopoly power, but this bill did nothing to rein in the abuses by the greedy pharmaceutical industry. Next we have to take monopoly power away from the drug corporations who are using it to harm the American people.

Donate to Social Security Works today to fight for a health care system and retirement system that protects everyone. And that means stopping pharmaceutical monopolies!
