Subject: Republicans UNDERMINING churches

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED:
Stop Big Money Republicans from using churches to buy our elections

Republicans want to GUT a critical law known as the Johnson Amendment.

Why? Because it's the only thing stopping Big Money groups from hijacking churches and charities and spending MILLIONS to elect radical Republicans.

If they succeed, Republican billionaires could use churches to funnel UNLIMITED secret money to buy our elections.

So we need 15,OOO signatures TODAY to stop them. Add your name to stop Republicans from gutting the Johnson Amendment >>

STOP REPUBLICANS FROM GUTTING THE JOHNSON AMENDMENT. ADD YOUR NAME >>

For decades, the Johnson Amendment has stopped churches and charities from spending in our elections -- protecting the separation of church and state.

But the GOP plan could let radical right wingers hijack churches and our Democracy.

That means billionaires could secretly funnel unlimited amounts through churches to buy our elections.. without us EVER knowing.

If we don't take action today, the Johnson Amendment's critical protections against Big Money could be lost for good.

Sign your name right away: http://go.fightforreform.org/Johnson-Amendment

Please don't wait!

Subject: Reject white supremacy! Reject Trump and the Confederate "culture"

While we were happy to see Steve Bannon leave the White House last Friday as a result of your work to put pressure on the White House, we cannot forget Trump has still been spending his time tweeting praise for memorials to Confederates as "beautiful" and planning to host an incendiary rally tomorrow in Arizona. Let's be clear, Trump is speaking of white supremacy when he praises the "culture" of men who committed treason against the United States in order to continue a society based upon enslaving Black men, women, and children. When Trump talks about good people fighting for Confederate statues he's talking about people who chanted "Jews will not replace us" and threatened a Black church the night before killing someone in Charlottesville.

Trump is desperately tweeting because he sees the writing on the wall, white supremacy is now under direct attack. His white nationalist chief strategist has been forced to resign, and these symbols of hate are coming down across the country. Senator Cory Booker has announced that he is introducing a resolution to meet our demands: removing all Confederate statues from the US Capitol. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi has also come out to demand that the United States Capitol Hill Statuary Hall as well. We are winning, Bannon is out of power and these monuments are coming down across the country.

Join us in pushing back against Trump's open advocacy for white supremacy and join us in supporting Senator Booker's resolution to remove these memorials to the Confederacy from the United States Capitol Hill Statuary Hall. Sign my petition today. Below you will find my original email.

Rachael Payton just started a petition to
Kick Confederates out of the Capitol!

Kick Confederates out of the Capitol

I just started a petition titled "Take Em ALL Down! No Confederate Statues in the US Capitol"

Following the acts of white supremacist terrorism in Charlottesville, congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle made statements condemning the violence.
Paul Ryan wrote, "The views fueling the spectacle in Charlottesville are repugnant. Let it only serve to unite Americans against this kind of vile bigotry," and Ted Cruz wrote in a statement "...white supremacists are repulsive and evil, and all of us have a moral obligation to speak out against the lies, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred that they propagate."

Will you sign the petition to tell Congress that they should kick the Confederates out of the Capitol?

These words ring hollow when Confederate leaders are enshrined with honor in the statuary hall at the US Capitol. Men who committed treason against the United States to keep Black people enslaved should not be in the most hallowed halls of government. Each of these statues were installed despite the obvious betrayal of these Confederates against America in response to the recognition of the humanity of Black Americans. These statues in the capitol are there to project the power of white supremacy directly from the states' Capitol. These statues Join us and tell members of Congress to remove the Confederates from the Capitol.

Join us if you don't want to see Black people passing Confederates whenever they visit Congress!

Thousands of white supremacist gather across the country and commits violent acts of terror and intimidation in the name of these Confederate symbols. These people have been emboldened by Trump who continues to promote racism and signal his approval to white supremacists. While Trump has inflamed these white supremacists, the statues honoring Confederates in the halls of the United States Congress are proof that white nationalism has long needed to be confronted in America.

Congress should not keep Confederates in a place of honor, kick Confederates out the Capitol!

Together we can help kick the Confederates out of the Capitol and send a strong message to white nationalists and Trump. After the terrorism of Charlottesville we can no longer silently allow the Confederacy and its cause to keep Black Americans enslaved to be honored in the halls of Congress.

Will you pledge to join the fight to kick the Confederates out of the Capitol!

Subject: Nike is funding Trump

Yesterday, dozens of Donald Trump's business councils resigned after he took to national TV to defend the neo-Nazis that marched in Charlottesville. Rather than apologize, he fired all of them.1

But two big corporations--Nike and Starbucks--are not just standing by him, but also lining his pockets with millions in rent for their Trump Tower locations.

Yesterday was bad for his business ties and money, but it's not enough. Both Starbucks and Nike seek to profit off of a progressive and inclusive brand. Nike alone will pay $580 million in rent to Trump over time--money that has given him a platform to spew hate for years.2

This is a national emergency and accountability is critical--the President of the United States is defending white supremacists and neo-Nazis. Will you sign the petition to Starbucks and Nike now?

To Starbucks and Nike: Reject Donald Trump and his embrace of white supremacists. End your leases at Trump Tower.

Even after this embarrassing exodus of his CEO buddies, Trump is still standing by his remarks from early this week, in which he called last weekend's white supremacist demonstrators "very fine people."3 But for every big-name company that rejects Trump's white supremacist-backed agenda, political power is taken away from Trump's alt-right, neo-Nazi supporters.

It was major backlash that caused these CEOs to quit and bruise Trump's administration--if we redirect that outrage to Starbucks and Nike before it peters out, we can make his business pay as well.

Will you sign the petition now?

Dear Faithful America member,

Across the country, momentum is building to take down monuments to the Confederate leaders who fought to preserve slavery. But in Lexington, Virginia, there is still a church named after Robert E Lee.

R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church leaders say they're considering changing the name "in the future" - but they've been saying that for years, and the name has remained in the same.

It's time to show church leaders that this name is not acceptable and must be changed. Now.

Tell Episcopal leaders: Rename Robert E Lee church.

Subject: Syllabus for White People to Educate Themselves

Cross Post from FB entitled,

"Syllabus for White People to Educate Themselves"

UPDATE (8/16/17): I did not realize this would prove as popular and durable as it has and, accordingly, I have not edited this document since a few weeks post-election. In the upcoming days, I'll be adding certain resources and taking off others, given the timeliness for lack thereof of some things on here. Please reach out to me with any suggestions for resources. Now, more than ever, white people of conscience need to take responsibility for educating ourselves and those around us and propelling that education into meaningful action. Now is the time to loudly proclaim our active resistance to white supremacy. Now is the time to stand with our siblings of all races, genders, sexualities, national origins, religions and abilities. I hope this will prove a valuable resource to do so.

Disclaimer: this is long! You won't read it in a day, but if you commit to reading consistently, you will make your way through it!

On Wednesday, November 9, many of us woke up shocked. Many young people felt robbed of what little idealism about this country they had left. Many older white folks felt confused, or like the country they had lived in their whole lives was maybe not what they thought it was. Others clung to their belief that America is still a fundamentally good country, slowly but surely moving in the right direction. They said: "Not all Donald Trump's supporters believe in his racist rhetoric. We need to humanize the angry white working class." But you cannot selectively support a platform like this. Donald Trump's election is a countrywide stamp of approval for his platform of hate and fear, and a reminder that this country, at its core, is a white supremacist state. American exceptionalism and myths about this country's origins and history fuel the misguided belief that America was ever great, and that Trump and the violence that has escalated since he took office, most recently in Charlottesville, is anything new.

Now is the time to affirm our support for those whose lives are in danger. Bigots are not in fear for their lives because they are bigots (and even if they are, that's a disgusting way of life they chose). People of color are. A "difference of opinion" is how you like your coffee, or debates over trade policy. Opinions that dehumanize others, that incite violence against them, cannot be treated as merely "opinions." They must be called what they are: bigotry and white supremacy.

We need to be thinking about how we are thinking about this election and its aftermath. This sense of comfort, of insulation from the horrors of America, is precisely what this syllabus is meant to disrupt. We, white people, clearly weren't listening hard enough to people of color, to women, to queer people, to immigrants, to Muslims, to anyone who holds a marginalized identity. This did not come as a shock to many marginalized people. Instead, as a friend of mine put it: "I am hurt but my hurt comes mainly from having my fears proven. Not from surprise. I am so angry because there are so many people who needed this result to prove to them the divide of this country instead of listening to the voices of their token friends. Instead of hearing. Instead of trusting." Now is the time to hear. Now is the time to educate and propel that education into action.

Note: Many of these sources are not from traditional news media outlets. This is intentional, as those outlets often times only feature the most heard voices and partially got us into this mess in the first place. In an effort to unlearn systemic racism and understand how we ourselves are complicit, we have chosen a variety of forms of content on top of traditional news articles, including blog posts, scholarly articles, fiction books, movies. We have organized the material thematically and chronologically, so if you are overwhelmed with the length of the document, pick a couple from each section and then move on. I ask you to read through this syllabus with an open mind and heart. If you have any thoughts on additional materials or just in general, please use the comment feature! Thanks.

How can we make sense of this election and move forward accordingly?

We can start by facing the fact that the United States has always been and is still currently a white supremacist state. For many of people in color, this election wasn't a surprise–it was a confirmation of their fears.

From: Anne, Elsie, Sara, Seth, and the rest of the MoveOn Video Lab team
Subject: Worse than Fox News

I'm Anne Thompson, MoveOn's Video Lab Director. I don't write you very often because I'm usually behind the scenes, producing videos. But I'm writing you today to talk about what Video Lab is; two big new challenges that we're facing right now and how we're planning to deal with them; and how you can help.

What MoveOn's Video Lab is:

MoveOn launched Video Lab in June 2016. Since then—in just over a year—we've had more than 300 million views on Facebook alone, with viewers having spent 139 million minutes (or a grand total of 264 years) absorbing MoveOn's fact-based stories, context, and timely information.

In this new media environment where roughly half of American adults get their news from social media, video is playing a key role in our priority campaigns.1 In the fight to stop Trumpcare—which we won(!)—we created 142 videos that were viewed 40 million times and shared over 900,000 times. Our videos also generated 37,000 calls to members of Congress.

Two big, new challenges that we're facing:

We've had breakout successes over the past year. But now, there are two big, new challenges that we're facing in the right-wing, fake-news space:

  1. Donald Trump has launched a new project, which some reporters are calling "Trump TV."2 Trump TV is an attempt to deliver fake news and "alternative facts" directly to the American people.
  2. For years, Fox News has pumped right-wing propaganda into millions of homes. Now, the right-wing media giant Sinclair Broadcast Group is trying to do to local TV news what Fox has done to cable news. Sinclair is forcing their local TV stations to run over-the-top pro-Trump commentaries by Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn during their news broadcasts, and after a proposed mega-merger with Tribune Media, Sinclair would reach 72 percent of households in America.3

How we're fighting back against right-wing, pro-Trump media:

We have an enormous opportunity to respond to these big new challenges and get the truth out—tens of millions of times—by doubling down on what's worked over the past year, continuing to innovate, and growing our team. And it's critical that we make big investments right now, to make sure that we're prepared to respond to an unprecedented assault on the truth going into the 2018 election season.

So here's my simple request: Can you join the fight against right-wing pro-Trump media by chipping in monthly to help MoveOn expand our Video Lab team?

Because you've saved your payment information with MoveOn, your donation will go straight through.

Donate monthly  or  make a one-time gift

It has never been harder for the American people to hear through the noise and learn the facts about what's happening in our country. And I don't need to tell you how extremely dangerous these new developments are to our already teetering democracy.

We've got to counter the right-wing media takeover and tell the truth. Over the past year, we've proven that what Video Lab does really makes a difference. Now, I'm asking for your help to take Video Lab to the next level.

Please, chip in whatever you can afford each month, and help us stand up for the truth:

Donate monthly  or  make a one-time gift

P.S. Here's why Video Lab works so well:

  • We're fast. MoveOn's Video Lab team uses cutting-edge production techniques to create powerful, Facebook-optimized videos within the fast-paced news cycle. This ability to move from inception to posting in a few hours means that we're shaping the political conversation as news breaks, providing our audience with independent, carefully sourced, progressive content and analysis that they can share with others. Video Lab releases five to ten videos per week, with a typical viewership of 100,000 per video. At the same time, Video Lab also produces signature pieces with breakout success, such as our Trump's tax returns video created in partnership with Senator Elizabeth Warren—that has received more than 37 million views to date.
  • We have a huge reach. Even the best, most timely content has no impact if it doesn't reach viewers. That's why MoveOn's 1.4 million Facebook followers, 264,000 Twitter followers, 45,000 YouTube followers, 24,000 Instagram followers, and millions of members who receive videos over email are so important—along with our team's relationships with some of the internet's biggest social media publishers and networkers, who serve as crucial amplifiers for our messages, helping MoveOn's Facebook posts reach 5-10 million people in a typical week. Video Lab's compelling, shareable storytelling carries widely and quickly, reaching a broad audience at a fraction of the cost of TV ads and other forms of paid media.
  • We're an independent, trusted voice. We aren't beholden to any politician, party, corporation, or foundation. We are accountable only to MoveOn members! We fight Trump's lies with the truth, and we stand for core progressive values, including economic and racial justice, healing the planet, and a democracy that belongs to the people instead of to billionaires and corporations. That spirit of independence and our core values come through in our videos.

Convinced? Good! We need your help! Can you chip in monthly to help expand MoveOn's Video Lab?

Subject: "New strategy?" Nonsense!

Afghanistan.jpg

On January 11, 2013, Donald Trump sent a message over Twitter that said, "Let's get out of Afghanistan. Our troops are being killed by the Afghanis we train and we waste billions there. Nonsense!" We agree.

Yet tonight, President Trump is likely to announce that his "new strategy" for Afghanistan entails sending thousands more US troops into harm's way, in addition to the 8,400 US soldiers already there. Tell Trump: End US military intervention in Afghanistan.

US troops in Afghanistan are part of the problem, not the solution. Although the United States has invested $70 billion and 16 years in rebuilding the Afghan military, Afghan government forces control less than 60 percent of the nation's territory. As long as US forces occupy Afghanistan, the Afghan government will always be dependent on outsiders to prop it up; opposition forces will always be fighting to rid the nation of foreign intervention; and the Afghan people will continue to suffer from the tragedy of decades of endless militarism.

US military intervention has cost us 2,300 dead service members and an additional 17,600 wounded, as well as trillions of dollars. Operations in Afghanistan cost us $4 million per hour, and that doesn't even include any new troops or equipment.

Imagine what we could do with such massive amounts of money. We could hire tens of thousands of teachers, pay for Trump's touted infrastructure promises, provide better care for our veterans, and furnish all Afghans with clean drinking water.

US intervention has resulted in large-scale corruption, with Afghanistan third from the bottom in international rankings, ahead of only Somalia and North Korea. Corruption in the military is infamous, with tens of thousands of "ghost soldiers" on the books so that higher-ranking military can steal their salaries—all on the US taxpayer's dime. According to the Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction John Sopko, these "ghost employees" exist in the ministries of education, health, public works, military and police.

The United States has spent $8.5 billion to battle narcotics in Afghanistan, but opium production there has reached an all-time high.We should have left a long time ago. All we're doing now is protecting the government we put in place and engaging in skirmishes with those who attack it. President Trump is making the same mistake as both Republican and Democratic presidents before him, prolonging a war that has no likely positive outcome.

Tell Donald Trump: It's time to bring our soldiers home and let the Afghans determine their future. And share this message on Twitter and Facebook.

P.S. Spaces are still available in our August 26-27 Sonoma Valley Peace Camp, or join us in late October in Cuba!
