From: Wright State Communications on behalf of Dr. Gary Dickstein; Interim Vice President for Student Affairs
Subject: Anti-abortion display planned September 20 on Dayton Campus Quad

To our Raider Community,

Wright State University has received notification that a group of approximately 10 individuals from the organization Create Equality will erect an anti-abortion display and hand out literature on the Dayton Campus on Wednesday, September 20. The display is scheduled to be on the Quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They have informed the university that they plan to bring large 4X3 placards that contain very graphic images.

As an institution of higher education, it is imperative that we embrace diverse thoughts and ideas. Moreover, as a public university, Wright State must allow individuals or groups who wish to exercise their First Amendment rights on its campuses the opportunity to do so. This is true even when individuals and/or groups express views that some in our community find offensive. However, it is important to note the university will make sure that any individual and/or group behaves in a manner that is consistent with the guidelines established under the Constitution, all applicable laws, and university policy.

Members of our community who are uncomfortable with viewing these images may want to avoid the Quad area during this time. Furthermore, if you need support or wish to talk with someone, you are encouraged to visit our Counseling and Wellness Center, located in 053 Student Union, or call RaiderCares at 855-224-2887 (TTY: 855-327-9151). The staff in the Women’s Center, located in 148 Millett Hall, will also be available.

For further questions or concerns about this planned demonstration, contact the Division of Student Affairs at 775-2808 or email Vanessa Borelly Vega at vanessa.borellyvega@wright.edu.

Given that drug overdoses, cancer and heart disease are leading causes of death in Ohio, addictions to opiates and nicotine are two of the greatest challenges to health and wellbeing in the state. This forum will explore addiction across the life course and identify evidence-based policy options to reduce opiate and tobacco use, including examples of effective strategies from other states.

Speakers include:

  • Micah Berman, The Ohio State University
  • Leighton Ku, George Washington University
  • Donovan Maust, University of Michigan
  • Shawn Ryan, Brightview

    And more to be announced!

According to the 2017 Health Value Dashboard, Ohio ranks 46 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia on health value. This means that Ohioans are living less healthy lives and spending more on health care than people in most other states. Tobacco use and opioid abuse are two areas that were identified in the Dashboard as among the greatest health challenges facing Ohio.

Lunch will be served (vegetarian options available) Registration begins at 9:00, with program starting at 9:30.
