A film collaboration between John Richie and Dayton Native Ian Cook. 91% is a documentary that examines U.S. gun policies with a focus on the background check system. 91% of Americans are for background checks on all gun sales, yet Congress continues to fail to close the loophole. Why is that and how does that undermine our public safety? The hour long film will be followed by a discussion afterwards. Please join us for this important event!" RJN thanked in Huffington Post Article

Once again, Racial Justice NOW! 's organizing and policy work to stop the school to prison pipeline has been recognized in the news. On August 23, 2016 a well respected and circulated publication, The Huffington Post, published an article by Dr. Kevin Gilbert , the Executive Committee Member of the National Education Association called, The School-To-Prison Pipeline Is An Epidemic That Can Be Cured.

Here is an excerpt from the article,

"As educators, we are late to the game in addressing this issue. We owe a debt of gratitude to civil rights, youth and family organizations that have been on the front lines of this fight for decades highlighting the impact zero tolerance policies were having on our children - like the Dignity in Schools Campaign, a nationwide coalition of youth and parent groups across the country, in many of the places we serve, organizing to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.  And national organizations like Advancement Project, who along with DC's Critical Exposure and Ohio's Racial Justice Now! took the time to meet with our taskforce to provide needed input and guidance.

This policy statement is about US – the educators, and not assessing blame on others! If there's anything we can do to end the flow of students into the school-to-prison pipeline, we MUST do it. We help shape the minds and lives of every student we touch. This work is part of our core mission:

GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR EVERY STUDENT."

This week your Ombudsman Office opened 17 cases on the City of Dayton Inspection Services, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Social Security, Homeless Services, and HUD for households in Dayton, Kettering, Oakwood, Huber Heights, Miamisburg and Trotwood.  We assisted another 32 households in Brookville, Dayton, Harrison Township, Kettering, Miamisburg, Riverside and Trotwood with information about Dayton Municipal Court, Food Stamps, HUD, Social Security, the Health District, the Attorney General's office, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the State Medical Board, and the Ohio Public Utilities Commission.

We assisted a grieving mother to obtain her son's ashes and personal possessions from the prison where he had died.

Our Long-Term Care Ombudsmen opened cases in nine facilities on menu quality; inadequate care plans; transportation; lack of choice of activities; staff attitudes regarding dignity and respect; lost laundry items; billing charges; and lack of privacy.  We participated in six surveys by the Ohio Department of Health to report the complaints we have resolved in the facilities they are inspecting.  We provided information and advice to 12 callers concerning benefits and rights in facilities and how to select a nursing home.

Subject: Community Violence

Fellow Community Police Council Members – Greetings!

This message is a request for us to seek bolder impactful action to help reduce the senseless violence in our community.  I'm frustrated, angry and disappointed that we have not been more effective in reducing the violence that is deeply entrenched in our community.

I'm tired of waking up every morning to learn of the crime that besieges our neighborhoods, specifically the black neighborhoods.  I realize we have to address the long standing tension and mistrust between our police officers and community, however, the black on black crime needs to be addressed and we can't continue to tip toe around it!  Enough is Enough!

My frustration is heighted as a result of a personal experience.

Last evening as I was driving home from a meeting about 8:00 p.m., I stopped at my daughter's home who lives between Cornell and Philadelphia.  After leaving her house, I traveled up Gettysburg where traffic came to a stop near Gettysburg and Hillcrest.  Individuals in a truck and car were in both lanes blocking traffic.  I was 3rd or 4th in lineup of cars.  Most times when this occurs, I'm annoyed for a few seconds or minutes and wait for the individuals to move on.  But this didn't happen this time.  Individuals from either the car or truck began shooting.  After the gunshots, the truck sped off and the individuals in the car followed it.  Realizing what just occurred, drivers in both lanes didn't move.  What a terrifying experience.

I'm open to having a candid conversation about the violence in our community that includes a serious discussion and plan to address black on black crime in our neighborhoods.  I ask that CPC make this part of our agenda.

Regards,

Mary E. Tyler; Executive Director, The National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Dayton
