Greater Miami Valley Math Circle (GMVMC)

To students and parents of previous OMC, GMVMC, GMVCSC and AMC-8-test participants,

Last year, Wright State University
hosted the Greater Miami Valley Math (as well as the Computer Science) Circle. We have instructors from several area colleges and universities, along with private industries, and students and parents from several local schools.

We will begin the 2016-2017 academic year on Saturday August 27 with a Student/Parent Orientation and classes on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month from 10:30am to noon, in the Mathematical and Microbiological (MM) Building at Wright State University. Please see the attached sheet for a more detailed schedule. The Math Circle has three groups:

·         Beginning (grades at least 5-7)

·         Intermediate (grades 7-9)

·         Advanced (grades 9-12)—MUST have completed Algebra I or equivalent by time of membership

We will continue:

·         Hosting the American Mathematics Contest 8th Grade Test for our younger members, an opportunity that most area schools do not offer their students. (The test is tentatively to be on Saturday, November 19, 2016.)

·         Inviting students to participate in the Ohio Mathematics Contest and Physics Test, held every April at Wright State University. (Scholarships are awarded to top scorers by Wright State University.)

·         Giving enrichment talks and workshops to the Advanced Group by prominent scholars and area teachers once per month.

Math
-Circle classes are for students who are enthusiastic about learning mathematics and enriching their problem solving skills in creative and innovative ways. Subject: The Interfaith Forum of Greater Dayton would like to invite the following program: HUNGER IN THE MIAMI VALLEY: A FAITH RESPONSE

HUNGER IN THE MIAMI VALLEY: A FAITH RESPONSE

Join the Interfaith Forum of Greater Dayton as we discuss the topic of hunger in the Miami Valley. Rev. Dr. Kent Millard, Interim President at United Theological Seminary and Allan Stevens from Feed Ohio will discuss innovative ways we can help end hunger in the Dayton area.

Allan Stevens is currently serving as a southwest regional leader for Feed Ohio. He has traveled the world flying over 2 million miles to highly developed and very poor countries.  This travel has given him a unique perspective on poverty, healthcare, and hunger - including the altruistic and sometimes political sides to the issues.

Time: Sunday, August 28th at 3:00pm – 5 pm
Location: Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd, Kettering, Ohio in the gym.

After the presentation, you will have the opportunity to get involved with community initiatives that are addressing the issue of hunger in the Miami Valley. You can listen and join in their efforts.

Current representatives include Bread for the World, The Dayton Food Bank, and Weavers for Justice, and The Tony Hall Hunger Initiative.

We can make a difference in our community.

Free and open to the public as always.

Some people like to bring a light refreshment to share -- no pork or shellfish please! Ingredient lists on homemade products help those with food sensitivities make safe choices.

Following this event will be an Interfaith Panel discussion focusing on the call from God to address hunger. This panel discussion will feature speakers from various faith traditions. This event will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 3:00pm, Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd. Kettering Ohio.  Both events are free and open to the public. Please bring a canned good as a donation.

Subject: Syrian and Muslim refugees

You probably have heard and watched with horror the latest casualty in the war torn Syrian region.
The following is the clip from CNN: http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2016/08/18/syrian-boy-aleppo-omran-bolduan-breaks-down-ath.cnn

The following is my Op-Ed piece in the Dayton Daily News from last week: http://ireader.olivesoftware.com/Olive/iReader/DaytonDailyNews/SharedArticle.ashx?document=DDN%5C2016%5C08%5C12&article=Ar01004

If the link doesn't work, then here it is:

MUSLIM/SYRIAN REFUGEES A SOURCE OF STRENGTH NOT TERROR

Mr. Khizr Khan who spoke lovingly of his son at the Democratic Convention said if Donald Trump had been in charge, his family and the story of their son’s sacrifice as a Muslim American fallen soldier defending America would not have happened. The presidential Republican nominee Donald Trump’s call for a ban on Muslim immigrants and Syrian refugees entering the US pending a more rigorous vetting process reminded me of a similar refugee crisis 40 years ago. During the last days of the war in Vietnam, the other forgotten war, thousands of Vietnamese people braved the sea to run away from the communist North Vietnamese army invading the South. Many perished in the sea while others were lucky to be saved by the 7th Fleet of the US Navy or evacuated from the rooftop of the US Embassy. My family was lifted out of Saigon with mortar shells exploding around them and many others came to the US later as "boat people". It occurred to me that if Mr. Trump had been there in 1975, how many of us would have been vetted prior to being saved from the sea, prior to board a helicopter with bullets flying overhead, how many of us were suspected of traveling to the US to become “sleeper cells” with the intention of turning America into a communist country and to carry out terror acts? Of course, we were not suspected of such plans as we were running for our lives from the communists!  One thing is for certain, if Trump had been in charge then, many Vietnamese people including my family and me probably would not be here today along with thousands of Muslim refugees. Vietnamese refugees are no different than Syrian or any other refugees.
We both share the common desire to flee an oppressive regime that is hell bent on killing and exterminating humanity. To this day 40 years later, the most ardent anti-communist sentiments are still found among the first generations of Vietnamese-Americans and the same anti-ISIS sentiment can be expected from Syrian refugees who defied the order from ISIS to stay with their caliphate. Because of Islamophobia, many people do not see that Syrian refugees are not violent extreme fundamentalists. ISIS has strict orders to kill any Muslim who wants to join the modern world or who rejects their ideology of extremism and intolerance. If the US has to fight ISIS at home, I recommend one group of Muslims that are the staunchest anti-ISIS and that is the Syrian refugees. They will be the eyes and ears for the law enforcement and security forces in the community, in the mosques, in the schools, in the local food markets to fight terrorism. They will be a force to reckon with in the fight of reforming and modernizing Islam as they are the least likely to be radicalized. Currently the vetting process of Syrian refugees is one of the most comprehensive and complex series of vetting and we need to receive them with open arms as they may represent our best hope in the fight of radical Islam extremism at home. As the ISIS territory and caliphate are rapidly shrinking and systematically defeated overseas, ISIS will resort to global spreading of terror cells as their primary attack modes. Muslim Americans like the Khan family and especially Syrian refugees fighting along side with our Homeland Security forces could be our trump card against ISIS, unless Mr. Trump gets his way.

If you feel inclined, go to DaytonDailyNews.com to comment on this piece.
Or you can give me your feedback here.
For those who have never or could ever come close to an experience that the Syrian boy in the CNN video above, Omran Daqneesh, is going through, I hope that you could at least have an ounce of compassion and understanding of what refugees endure and sacrifice to live in a safe and peaceful place on this earth. Please feel free to share this OP-Ed piece to others.

Subject: Latest From Miami County about the Stop The Pit effort

The Miami County Democratic Party has endorsed the Stop The Pit movement in Miami County. The party helped members of the group collect signatures and provide information to the public at the Miami County FaIr which occurred from Aug. 12 thru Aug 18 in hopes of stopping the strip mine being proposed at Farrington and Experiment Farm Roads

The signatures that were collected will be presented to the county zoning appeals board when the matter is put on their agenda and to Senator Sherrod Brown who it is hoped will intervene to help stop the project.

The first photo shows Democratic candidate Steve Fought (L)  who is running for the House seat in the 8th Congressional  District (John Boehner’s old seat) and Piqua resident Jim Hiegal who is with the Stop the Pit group. Fought spent most of Wednesday 8/17 at the Democratic booth to promote his candidacy and show his support the for the Stop The Pit effort.

The second photo shows our booth being staffed by Miami County Democratic Party vice-chair Audrey Gillespie (L) and Party Chairman David Fisher who fielded questions from the public concerning the Hillary Clinton and Ted Strickland campaigns.
