What is Trump hiding in his tax returns?

Lies, half-truths, diversions, distractions. Donald Trump's first press conference since becoming president-elect was no different from his twisted rhetoric on the campaign trail. Trump continued to evade scrutiny on a number of issues – including his ties to Russia, his conflicts of interest, crony cabinet and failure to release his tax returns. He flat out lied when he claimed that "the only ones who care about my tax returns are reporters." In July, we delivered the petition signatures of more than 100,000 CREDO activists, along with 300,000 from our progressive allies, to Trump Tower.

What is Trump trying to hide?

Trump is poised to run a corrupt administration that enriches him and his family and gives corporations and foreign interests unprecedented access to and influence over the executive branch.2 It's time to increase the pressure on him to come clean. Can you add your name today?

Tell Donald Trump: You must release your tax returns. Click here to sign the petition.

Releasing tax returns is something that every presidential candidate has done for the past 40 years, but Trump still refuses to do so. Trump's press conference didn't just show Trump plans to continue to profit from his businesses.3 He also downplayed his ties to Russia and his debt obligations.4,5 Trump's claim that he has "very little debt" is at odds with reporting that he has hundreds of millions of dollars in debt to U.S. and foreign investors.6,7 His tax returns may be one of the only ways left to get full transparency on his financial ties or debts, including any relationship with the Russian government, which could compromise the integrity of the presidency.

Trump continues to hide behind a phony excuse that he can't release his tax returns until the IRS finishes auditing him. But that claim has been repudiated by the IRS itself, and nothing is preventing Trump from releasing multiple years of returns.8

Releasing tax returns is a crucial way for a presidential candidate to assure the public that he or she has no conflicts of interest. If, as he claims, Trump has nothing to hide, he should have no problem releasing his. His continued refusal to do so should raise major red flags for anyone committed to ensuring the integrity of our democracy.

Trump's tax returns need to be out in the open for Americans to see, and we need to force the issue right now.

Skip the inauguration of hate

Rep. John Lewis' decision to stay away from Trump's inauguration is a game changer. Right now, at least 60 congressional Democrats have announced that they are skipping the inauguration. We must keep the pressure on.

On Friday, Rep. Lewis announced that he would skip the inauguration. He also called Trump's presidency illegitimate, given CIA, FBI and NSA reports of Russian cyber attacks that tipped the electoral scales for Trump.1

Trump's retaliation on Twitter was beyond appalling, even for Trump. He called Rep. Lewis "all talk, talk, talk - no actions."2 Rep. Lewis survived a brutal police beating in Selma, Alabama in 1965 while fighting for racial justice and voting rights and has been a consistent advocate for racial justice in his years as a member of Congress. The backlash against Trump has been immediate, with 60 Democrats, including Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Keith Ellison, joining fellow progressive champions like Reps. Luis Gutierrez, Barbara Lee and Raul Grijalva to stand with Rep. Lewis and skip the inauguration.

As Trump himself helped make clear, Democrats have a choice: They can stand with civil rights hero Rep. Lewis and stay away from the inauguration or attend the inauguration and help legitimize Trump's racism, misogyny and hate.

Too many Democrats in Congress, including every Senate Democrat, remain silent. This is not the time for compromise or decorum. We need to do everything we can to make sure Democrats do the right thing.

Tell Democrats in Congress: Skip the inauguration of hate.

Politicians who attend the inauguration will be legitimizing and normalizing Trump's presidency and his hateful agenda. In fact, Trump's tweets gave right-wing lawmakers license to berate Rep. Lewis with racist statements scolding him for speaking out.

Mike Pence said that Donald Trump, a racist bigot, would do more for Black people than Rep. Lewis ever did.3 A Georgia official called Rep. Lewis a racist pig on Facebook.4 Maine Gov. Paul LePage said that Rep. Luis should be grateful for everything Republican presidents have done for Black people, including the emancipation of slaves, essentially whitewashing and rewriting the history of the racial justice and civil rights movement in America.5

Trump's attack on Rep. Lewis, a civil rights hero who is entering his 30th year as a U.S. Representative, has helped draw an even brighter line between congressional Democrats who will fight against Trump's hateful regime and those who won't.

Speak out now to tell all Democrats in Congress that you're counting on them to stand with Rep. Lewis and refuse to attend the inauguration.

Tell Democrats in Congress: Skip the inauguration of hate.

Thank you for speaking out,

A BEAUTIFUL GOP LOVE STORY!!

A
couple were in a busy shopping center just before Christmas.   The wife suddenly noticed that her husband was missing and as they had a lot to do, she called him on the cell phone.   She said, " Where are you, you know we have lots to do."

He
replied "You remember the jewelers we went into about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that diamond necklace?   I could not afford it at the time and I said that one day I would get it for you?"

Little
tears started to flow down her cheek and she got all choked up.   "Yes, I do remember that shop." she replied.

"Well
I am in the gun shop next door to it."

Subject: Tom Price: Health care killer

Trump's upcoming cabinet pick is waiting in the wings--and he's poised to unleash havoc on women.

Starting next week, the Senate will begin to rush through confirmation of Representative Tom Price (R-GA) as the head of the Health and Human Services Department (HHS).1 Rep. Price is widely known for his staunch opposition to abortion, reproductive access, Planned Parenthood, Obamacare, and even birth control. If he is confirmed as the head of HHS, he could lead the charge to gut the health care services that millions of women, children, and families rely on every day.

We can't stand by and let this happen without putting up a fight. Rep. Price is about to appear before a key Senate committee, and we need to make sure our voices are heard loudly by committee members and the entire Senate BEFORE his confirmation hearing next week. Will you sign the petition?

Rep. Price has never hidden his disdain for Obamacare. In fact, he's gone to great lengths to cut funding to key programs like Medicare and Medicaid--both of which offer health care services for some of our country's most vulnerable citizens. Rep. Price is especially dangerous for women and reproductive health care and has committed to policy changes that could eliminate abortion access and increase the cost of birth control, making reproductive care virtually impossible for innumerable women.2 As the director of HHS, he would also have the power to green-light major funding cuts to women's health care programs, a move similar to last year's efforts by Floridian lawmakers who set out to withhold Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood in an attempt to force clinics to close.

Time is of the essence because Rep. Price's confirmation hearings are scheduled to begin in less than a week. Even worse, two days ago Republicans began the first step to repeal Obamacare (literally in the middle of the night while most of the nation was sleeping3). By doing so, they've essentially laid the red carpet that could lead HHS nominee Price directly to his goal of ripping apart the health care provisions so many of us have come to rely on.4

Time is ticking, and we have to move to block Rep. Tom Price's confirmation as the head of Health and Human Services. Will you join us today?

Subject: They're already coming for Social Security

Trump isn't even sworn in yet, and the GOP has already made the first moves to destroy Medicare. Social Security will be next. We don't have a second to lose.

Donald Trump ran on a promise of no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. His base needs them. The GOP is split on them. This is winnable.

Other98 is working directly with Bernie Sanders and other national leaders at "Our First Stand" rallies across the country on Sunday, January 15. Click here to find an event near you.

On the first day of the new Congress, Republicans introduced a budget resolution that would repeal the Affordable Care Act and lay the groundwork for annihilating Medicare.

And in December, while they knew you were looking the other way, the GOP unveiled their plot to obliterate Social Security – Rep. Sam Johnson's dangerous "Social Security Reform Act." This ruthless collection of benefit cuts would slash America's most important safety net by almost 30% - and the cuts would only get bigger as we get older. The GOP has no shame about their eagerness to destroy Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

But we can stop this.

Other98 will be partnering with Senator Sanders to defend these programs and the people who need them. But we'll need you, too. It starts now.

Join us: find out if there's an "Our First Stand" rally near you.

This will be a tough four years, but we can keep winning—as long as we keep fighting. Thank you for everything you do.

From: Angelo Carusone; Media Matters
Subject: Trump vs. CNN (sign the petition)

At Donald Trump's first press conference as president-elect, he berated and blacklisted CNN reporter Jim Acosta for daring to ask questions in reference to CNN's bombshell reporting on Trump's relationship with Russia. The incoming White House press secretary threatened to throw Acosta out for daring to do his job and ask questions, and another Trump adviser verbally attacked him, too.1

Will you sign my petition calling on the White House Correspondents' Association to stand strong against Trump's outrageous bullying of the media?

If Trump blacklists or bans one of you, the rest of you need to stand up. Instead of ignoring Trump's bad behavior and going about your business, close ranks and stand up for journalism. Don't keep talking about what Trump wants to talk about. Amplify your colleague's inquiry or refuse to engage until Trump removes that person or media outlet from the blacklist.

Sign Angelo's petition

You would expect that the press would be outraged at such behavior from the administration. But you would be wrong. The press acted like none of this happened.2 They ignored that their colleague was being punished and shut out right in the middle of the press conference and continued engaging with Trump as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on.

Trump has a history of doing this to the press—and worse.

He banned The Des Moines Register from covering his events. He banned Univision from attending his events. He revoked The Washington Post's credentials for a length of time in retaliation for a headline that he didn't like. He revoked Politico's credentials for a while to punish them for an article that he didn't like.3 BuzzFeed—which Trump called a "failing pile of garbage" during the press conference—has been on a blacklist since June of 2015.4 The Daily Beast is on the blacklist and is almost always denied credentials as a result.5 And this list isn't exhaustive.

But journalists covering Trump don't learn. Time and time again—as one outlet after another is frozen out—reporters continue to go about their interactions with Trump and his people as if nothing is wrong.

Enough is enough. Some principles are more important than competition among news outlets.

If a free press has any hope of surviving the next four years, we need the journalists covering Trump to pledge: If Trump blacklists one of you, the rest of you need to stand up.

Tell the White House press corps: If you see Trump blacklisting a reporter or a media outlet, speak up and fight back. If not, you could be next.

"The Yanks Are Coming!" - Obama Orders
Greatest Redeployment to Germany in a Quarter Century

Victor Grossman on January 8, 2017, Portside

Hit that old song again, loud and clear! "Over there, over there, Send the word, send the word, That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming." Yes, sirree! Shades of 1918 and the Battle of the Marne! Shades of 1944 and the beaches of Normandy! But no, not just shades and not just words have already been sent. The U.S. is sending significant military assets to Germany, and to countries bordering Russia.

2017 had hardly begun in Germany's port of  Bremerhaven when 4000 lads and lasses in Yankee uniform disembarked and unloaded three shiploads, over 2,500 tanks, trucks and other combat vehicles, and sent them on by rail, on ferries through the Baltic or clanking along those Autobahn highways through North Germany. So many memories!

Colonel Bertulis at US Command Headquarters in Stuttgart called it "the greatest redeployment operation of the US Army to Germany since 1990.It will ensure that the necessary combat power is brought to the right place in Europe at the right time." Higher up the ladder, Lt. Gen. Frederick Hodges, commander of US forces in Europe, said, "Three years after the last American tanks left the continent, we need to get them back."

What dangerous front are they moving to defend? Where, this time, is "over there"?

Well, it is not exactly a front. Or not yet! Not one BB gun has been fired along the Russian border with Latvia or Estonia, nor along the short Polish or Lithuanian borders around the small, fully surrounded Russian enclave at Kaliningrad. Nor has anyone heard Putin or any other Russian leader utter a single threat or make one demand directed at any of those countries.

But, as General Hodges told journalists, the measures were a "response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea." He added consolingly, "This does not mean that there necessarily has to be a war, none of this is inevitable, but Moscow is preparing for the possibility."

Peace demonstrations (far too few) point out that Russia has 900,000 armed troops while NATO has 3.5 million, stationed in over a hundred bases in a world-wide ring around Russia. It threatened to shut off Russia's only warm-water naval base on the Crimea (where most people, Russian-speakers, voted for their "take-over" in a referendum) while moving to close the ring from the south. It's coup d'état Ukrainian government of Russophobes (and many fascist types) was largely set up by Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in 2014. "'Yats' is our man," she telephoned and, after more money and violence, Yatsenyuk it was! People wondered what Washington would do if friends of Russia moved right up to American borders. Then they recalled coups or invasions in Guatemala, Cuba, Grenada, Panama, Chile. Not to mention Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, hardly closer to US borders!

Some Europeans even wondered at the planned arrival date of the new troops at the Russian borders, January 20th of all days! Were there any star-struck generals or well-groomed connivers who hoped to end an era not with a whimper but with a bang? Did some fear that Donald Trump, while switching back and forth on nearly everything else he said in his campaign, might just possibly, for whatever reason,  keep his word about getting along peacefully with Putin? For the highest ranking neo-con enthusiast down to the last deluded riveter at Lockheed-Martin - that sounded alarming!

How many Germans believe all the New Year's fireworks from Washington about Putin's electoral hacking? Most of them certainly drew other conclusions as to why Clinton was defeated. They have many questions about that mysterious American institution, the Electoral College, which somehow offers nothing remotely resembling anything like an academic degree. Many have lost old faiths in their great friend and protector.

But some welcome this operation, "Atlantic Resolve", like smaller ones which preceded it. Although it is not sponsored by the UN, not even by NATO, but only by the outgoing US administration, some political leaders, as in Canada and Britain, now want to have the German Bundeswehr get into the act and send a battalion to Lithuania. The Baltic countries are not far from St. Petersburg. Then still called Leningrad, a million and a half people died there, mostly of hunger and cold during the genocidal Nazi siege in 1941 to 1944. The flags and uniform colors of those who maintained that siege were different, but some traditions have long lives, as too many have been demonstrating in loud marches and more and more voting booths.

As yet, at least, not too many in Germany like the idea of playing mass scale Russian roulette. In Augsburg, over 50,000 people, many old-timers unable to walk, had to leave homes and hospitals on Christmas Day so a giant triple-fused bomb from World War Two, 75 years ago, could be defused. And now there are those, only a hundred miles away in Stuttgart, who speak lightly of a Number Three! And today's missiles can have phosphorus, uranium and nuclear components, and be delivered by unmanned drones.

If this Operation Atlantic Resolve somehow recalls the idea of New Year's resolutions, millions could supply a few of absolute, overriding urgency; move troops and weapons out and away, negotiate, make peace, break with the conscience-less plans and ambitions of a limited number of greedy adventurers and turn to the planet's vitally crucial problems - a decent life for all its people and plans for saving our tortured planet.
