Traffic cameras to return in October

Traffic safety enforcement cameras will be active on Dayton streets as early as October 1, with 10 cameras posted at five locations. The camera system activation follows an Ohio Supreme Court ruling overturning restrictions imposed by the state legislature in 2015. During October, speed or red light violations will result in warnings. Beginning November 1, violations detected by cameras will generate citations with an $85 fine. The following camera sites were chosen based on vehicle crash data:

  • West Third Street at James H. McGee Boulevard
  • North Gettysburg Avenue at Fairbanks Avenue
  • North Main Street at Siebenthaler Avenue
  • South Keowee Street between East Third Street and East Fourth Street
  • South Smithville Road at Linden Avenue.

Subject: (Oct. 2, 7 & 10) YWCA Dayton recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month with celebrity purse, 40th anniversary of shelter

Given blow is our press release detailing all our activities for October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Major highlights:

  • 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of our domestic violence shelter in Montgomery County, which is the county’s only such shelter
  • For the second year, we have been chosen for Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge, a crowdfunding competition among DV agencies. We’ll be handing off our limited-edition celebrity-designed purple purse (courtesy of Challenge spokeswoman Serena Williams) to a new individual or group each day of October in hopes of raising $40,000 in honor of our shelter anniversary.
  • Our signature YWomen Breakfast is celebrating its 15th year, and will feature keynote remarks by Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron), who has long been a champion of legislation that supports and empowers domestic violence and teen dating victims. The event will also feature the presentation of the 2017 Marsha Froelich Survivor Award, this year given to Nora L. Vondrell, executive director of SICSA Pet Adoption Center. In addition to her own personal story of survivorship, Nora is an advocate of the Protected Pets Program, which allows women in YW’s domestic violence shelter to shelter their pets concurrently with SICSA.

YWCA Dayton to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month
#PassThePurseDYT campaign enters second year

Dayton, Ohio, Sept. 25, 2017 – In the U.S., 1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. This epidemic crosses every racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic class and costs more than $5.8 billion each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This October, YWCA Dayton is raising awareness of, and funds for, their critical domestic violence services in Montgomery and Preble county. YW is both counties’ only provider of domestic violence shelter and is the operator of both counties’ longest-running 24/7 crisis hotline. In total, more than 100 women and children are helped by YWCA Dayton DV services every day.

2017 Domestic Violence Awareness Month highlights include:

Oct. 2-31 | Purple Purse Challenge
Starts Oct. 2 at noon; ends at 1:59 p.m. Oct. 31
The number one reason women don’t leave abusive relationships is because they’re being abused financially. The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge is a crowdfunding competition supporting DV agencies; the top fundraisers in each of two divisions are eligible for additional grants, up to $100,000, from Allstate. YW is one of only 198 organizations nationwide chosen to participate. This year marks our second year in the Challenge, and our goal is to raise $40,000 in honor of the 40th anniversary of our Dayton domestic violence shelter, which opened in 1977. Find our Challenge page at
www.ywcadayton.org/purplepurse

To help spread the word, we’re again taking to social media with #PassThePurseDYT. For each of the 29 days of the Purple Purse Challenge, individuals and groups across the Miami Valley will carry a purple purse – a limited-edition Cristian Marcucci bag designed by Challenge spokeswoman Serena Williams – to support YW services for DV survivors and play a key role in helping YW meet its Challenge fundraising goal. Kickoff party Oct. 2, 6-9 p.m., at Fifth Street Brewpub (FSB Gives Back Night). YW staff will guest bartend.

Oct. 7 | Purple Paws: Preble Pets Against Domestic Violence
Noon-2 p.m. | The Residences at Eagles Point, 307 N. Cherry St., Eaton, OH 45320
For the second time, YWCA Dayton will host a signature fundraising event for its Preble County shelter. YW has operated the only DV shelter in Preble County since 2004, and opened a formal business office in Eaton, Ohio, in fall 2016. Purple Paws is an outdoor event for everyone in the family – even Fido. Activities include a Pet Pageant, Pet Parade, pet caricature artist, hot dog meals, and more. Registration available at
http://bit.ly/PurplePaws17  Rain date: Oct. 21, 2017.

Oct. 10 | YWomen Breakfast
8-9 a.m. (Doors open 7:30 a.m.) | Schuster Center Wintergarden, 1 W. Second St., Dayton OH 45402
YWCA Dayton will recognize the strength and resilience of domestic violence survivors at our 15th annual YWomen Breakfast, which will have a special focus on the 40th anniversary of our Dayton DV shelter. Keynote remarks by Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-Akron) and presentation of the 2017 Marsha Froelich Survivor Award to honoree Nora Vondrell, executive director of SICSA Pet Adoption Center. Registration is available at
www.ywcadayton.org/breakfast

Plus: Paint the Town Purple, an initiative that includes displaying purple ribbons on area lightposts, lighting up a variety of downtown buildings purple, championing legislation supporting domestic violence survivors, and more. For a full list, visit
www.ywcadayton.org/dvam

YWCA Dayton staff are available to speak on any of the above events or domestic violence as a topic. To arrange an interview, contact Audrey Starr at the contact information above or email

YWCA is On A Mission
For more than 150 years, YWCA has been at the forefront of the most critical social movements — from voting rights and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and health care reform. Today, YWCA is one of the top 25 largest charities in the U.S., according to NonProfit Times, with total revenues of more than $775 million. YWCA helps more than 2 million women and children each year in the U.S.; worldwide, YWCA serves 25 million women and girls in 120 countries.

At YWCA Dayton, we:

  • Operate the only domestic violence shelters in Montgomery and Preble Counties. In 2016, more than 2,000 calls were fielded through our 24-hour crisis and domestic violence hotline, and 20,771 bed nights of emergency protective shelter were provided to 511 women and children in both these counties.
  • Provide affordable housing and housing-related services for women and families who are victims of domestic violence or at risk of homelessness. In 2016, nearly 8,000 nights of shelter were provided for more than 200 homeless women, and 108 women called our Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) housing units home.
  • Empower teens to explore and achieve their highest potential through educational and prevention outreach programming as well as our Girls Inc. program. Nearly 1,000 teens received services last year, including participants of our Girls Inc. program, which is part of an international network inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold and empowers them to succeed. Across the U.S. and Canada, Girls Inc. chapters provide more than 140,000 girls with a sisterhood of support to set goals, overcome obstacles and improve academic performance and achievement.
  • Advocate for legislative priorities that address racial justice and civil rights, women’s economic empowerment, and women’s health and safety.

YWCA Dayton is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families and strengthen our community. For comprehensive information about this important work, visit
www.ywcadayton.org and follow the conversation on social media with hashtag #OnAMission.

From: Audrey Starr; Director, Marketing and Communications, YWCA Dayton Communications
Subject: (Oct. 10) YWCA Dayton Announces 2017 Marsha Froelich Award Honoree

For the first time, YWCA Dayton is announcing its annual Marsha Froelich Survivor Award honoree in advance of its YWomen Breakfast, where the award is presented. The award is named in honor of the late Marsha Froelich, a former development VP of YWCA Dayton, and it recognizes a woman whose words and actions serve to exemplify, inspire, set an example, and celebrate the spirit of a survivor who has overcome the odds and continued on an amazing journey, both personally and professionally.

This year, YW is proud to honor Nora L. Vondrell, executive director of SICSA Pet Adoption Center, as this year’s honoree. In addition to Nora’s personal story of survivorship, she notes: “In addition to my personal story, SICSA is one of three local animal centers which provides shelter for the animals of domestic violence survivors who are seeking temporary shelter and can’t bring their pets. It’s called the Protected Pets Program, and we have had many women from YWCA Dayton’s domestic violence shelter utilize this option. For many, they won’t leave an abusive relationship because they fear their animals will be abused in their absence.”

Please see attached press release for further details, and stay tuned for our full slate of Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities!
