State Representatives Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) and Bernadine Kennedy Kent (D-Columbus) filed the Ohio Health Security Act, which will establish a single-payer health care plan in Ohio. Medical, dental, mental health, and vision services will be covered under the act and payments to healthcare providers for all eligible services will be made from a single fund, the Ohio Health Care Fund.

"Too many in Ohio are still struggling to get the care they need when they need it," Fedor said when the bill was first announced. She has followed up on that message, taking to Twitter to express her dedication to a single-payer model of healthcare: "Americans have shown that they care about providing affordable, accessible, and sensible healthcare to people. It's time for elected officials to listen." The two representatives have been adamant about the importance of healthcare: "We all need healthcare at some point in our lives, and we shouldn't have to mortgage our future to get it," Fedor said in a press conference announcing the bill.

Versions of the bill have been introduced in the past but never before have received so much support. Elected officials are, as Fedor called for on Twitter, listening to Ohioans. The bill, which will be heard in committee in the coming weeks, has 18 co-sponsors in addition to Representatives Fedor and Kennedy Kent. Representatives Antonio, Boggs, Boyd, Cera, Galonski, Holmes, Howse, Ingram, Kelly, Leland, Lepore-Hagan, Miller, Patterson, Ramos, Reece, Sheehy, Sykes, and West have all signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

Wait a minute.  What did I do?

This bill has not been introduced since 2013 when it was sponsored by Mike Foley and Bob Hagan.   After that session, they were term limited and did not run for re-election, so we were left with no sponsors.   But, due to the hard work of many of you around the state, Representatives Fedor and Kennedy Kent stepped up to the plate and became the new sponsors of the Ohio Health Security Act.

The other thing you did was to secure so many legislators as co-sponsors.  The last time this bill was introduced in the house, it had only four co-sponsors:   Representatives Antonio, Boyd (Barbara), Patterson and Ramos.   This time we have 18!   And, even more exciting, this bill has never had so many sponsors!   It was your letters and phone calls and emails that made the difference.

Great job! Thank you!

What will happen to HR 676 now that Congressman Conyers has resigned?

John Conyers, who has been the lead sponsor of the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act (H.R. 676) since its introduction to Congress almost 15 years ago, resigned Tuesday amid allegations of sexual harassment made by former staffers. You may have heard about this and wondered what it means for the bill.

Our first thoughts are of the victims of sexual assault and harassment and we stand in support of them.

Regarding H.R. 676, the bill remains in Congress through 2018, and reps can still sign on as co-sponsors. National groups will conduct a search for a new lead sponsor for the bill, but until then rest assured that H.R. 676 remains active. We hope you'll still continue lobbying your members of Congress to sign on to this and the Senate Medicare for All bill, S. 1804!

That Nasty Tax Bill

Action

Thank you to Steve Wagner of UHCAN Ohio for this information:

The tax bill is not done, until it's DONE.  And even then, it is important that members of Congress know where you stand and that they will be held accountable. Since the bill will have to go back to the House and Senate for a vote, call both.  Write.  Visit.  Keep in mind that the most effective method is a phone call or a visit.  If it is difficult to get through or you are just getting the answering machine, that is a good sign.   Keep trying.

It has been reported that members of Congress have not gotten the volume of phone calls regarding the tax bill that they received during the attempted healthcare repeal.   That surprised them, and they took it as a nod to go ahead.   Staffers say calls and visits to home offices are very effective.

Threats to Medicaid and Medicare

The tax bill is important because it may leave a $1.5 trillion deficit that will require cuts to Medicaid and Medicare.  Additionally, the House version of the bill eliminates deductions for major medical expenses, such as those often associated with long-term care, a special needs child or very expensive drugs for diseases like cancer. The Senate includes elimination of the tax penalty for the individual mandate.

Repealing the ACA's individual mandate in the tax bill would lead to 4 million more uninsured Americans by 2019 and 13 million by 2027, according to a new estimate from the Congressional Budget Office.

In Ohio, repeal of the individual mandate would cause 433,000 people to lose coverage, raise premiums on middle-class families by $1,480, impose an age tax of up to $1,100 on older Ohioans, and cut $1 billion in Medicare funds to Ohio, all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.

Dear Mr. Seoh:

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ("JCPOA"), the nuclear agreement between Iran and the international community. I appreciate hearing from you.

As you know, the United States and our international partners – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, "the P5+1" – reached an agreement with Iran in July 2015 to impose strict, long-term limits on Iran's nuclear program. As mandated by the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, the JCPOA was then subject to a 60-day Congressional review period. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted the most comprehensive, intrusive inspections ever of Iran's nuclear facilities in order to verify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA. In January 2016, after the IAEA had verified that Iran was abiding by the restrictions outlined by the JCPOA, the international community relieved sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program. The IAEA will continue regular inspections, and the JCPOA enables the immediate snap-back of sanctions should Iran fail to comply with its commitments.

In accordance with the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act – which passed the Senate with my support by a vote of 98-1 in May 2015 – the President must certify every 90 days, among other things, that Iran is complying with the JCPOA, and that continuing to provide proportionate sanctions relief to Iran, consistent with steps it has taken under the agreement, is in the US national security interest. The IAEA has repeatedly certified Iran's compliance with the JCPOA, and President Trump himself twice certified Iran's compliance. And even though both Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis have stated that it is in our national security interest to remain in the agreement, President Trump announced on October 13 that he was refusing to certify that continuing to provide proportionate sanctions relief by the US was in the US national interest. He also urged Congress to unilaterally make changes to the conditions under US law that would apply to continued US implementation of the JCPOA.

I supported – and continue to support – the JCPOA because I believe it is the only viable option to prevent Iran from developing or acquiring a nuclear weapon. This agreement works with our allies to enforce comprehensive, verifiable restrictions that block Iran's pathways to a nuclear bomb, avoids precipitating another war in the Middle East, and contains the most intrusive inspections regime ever adopted in peacetime. By taking this action—despite the IAEA's assurances that Iran is complying with the deal, an assessment that the U.S. intelligence community shares—President Trump erodes American credibility and undermines cooperation with our allies in Europe and elsewhere.

While the focus of the JCPOA was to address Iran's nuclear program, we must also confront Iran's other nefarious activities in the region. That is why I worked with my colleagues to pass sanctions legislation, which does not conflict with JCPOA, to address Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism in the region. The President signed these new measures into law on August 2, 2017. In my view, abandoning the JCPOA would make it harder—not easier—to address future issues related to Iran.

Under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, now that the President has refused to certify to Congress that providing proportionate US sanctions relief is in the US national interest, Congress will conduct its own review of these issues, and can either act to snap back sanctions that were relieved under the JCPOA, modify the Iran Review Act, or take no action. In addition, the President will be faced with a formal decision under US law early next year as to whether or not he will continue to provide sanctions relief by exercising key waivers in US law. As long as Iran continues to comply with the JCPOA, I hope he takes that key step.

Our national security is one of the most important issues I work on in the Senate, and I will keep your thoughts in mind as the Senate considers future action on the JCPOA.

Thank you again for contacting me.

Call Sen. Rob Portman: Don't let the FCC gut net neutrality

Trump's FCC is about to vote to end net neutrality. Our best shot of stopping the plan is to get our congressional representatives to pressure FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to back down. Call and tell him to stand up for net neutrality.

Net neutrality nowDespite overwhelming public outrage, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) still plans to end net neutrality – with a vote next Thursday, Dec. 14.

Our only chance to stop the vote now is to get Congress to intervene. Because Congress has oversight over the FCC, our congressional representatives could influence Pai to delay or abandon his plan to end net neutrality. Fortunately, even some Republicans in Congress are starting to respond to the widespread public opposition – but they are not yet doing enough. We need to add more pressure now.

Call Sen. Rob Portman now and tell him to stand up for net neutrality. Click here to make a call.

Net neutrality is the First Amendment of the internet. It's the basic principle that prevents powerful internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast and AT&T from controlling what we see and do online. Without net neutrality, ISPs would be able to slow, block or charge extra for content online.

Grassroots activists won an epic victory two years ago when we pushed the FCC to pass strong net neutrality rules. Hundreds of thousands of CREDO members and millions of others fought for years to protect the free and open internet. In 2015, together we won.

Now Chairman Pai is threatening that victory. His plan would make following net neutrality principles only a voluntary commitment for ISPs, relinquishing the FCC's authority to enforce them.
1

We didn't fight for years to win strong net neutrality rules only to watch Trump's FCC hand control over the internet to Comcast and AT&T.

Call Sen. Rob Portman now and tell him to stand up for net neutrality. Click here to make a call.

Lawmakers regularly call the FCC about issues that matter to their constituents. If they get enough calls from constituents, even Republican members of Congress might decide to stand up for net neutrality. After all, 76 percent of U.S. internet users, including Democrats, Republicans and independents, support net neutrality.
2

But if members of Congress don't step in, the FCC could get away with killing net neutrality. Now more than ever, we cannot allow corporations or their government friends to limit our freedom to organize, communicate and access information.

I am no IT whiz, but I do not believe people have been discussing fully the implications of the demise of net neutrality. Here are a few things I foresee if this is not fought tooth and nail by those who cherish the freedom of the world wide web.

  1. I have a shopping mall in my town, others in two nearby towns, and a smattering of strip malls etc. and can pick and choose where I shop on any day, in any combination. What if i needed to pay to subscribe to a mall or superstore, or something like Sams,  etc., or to any other shopping venue as well. Not being wealthy, I would not be likely to subscribe to all of those venues where, for one thing or another, at one time or another, I like to shop (or eat out for that matter.) Destruction of net neutrality could have a similar effect - you can visit any store you like at the mall to which you have a subscription; if you like one elsewhere, you will just have to pay for a subscription to that mall also.
  2. I know college educated people who do not truly know the difference between a browser and a search engine. Everyone should be sure that they do.
I may use four or five different internet browsers, some on my computer, another one on my smart phone, some for different purposes. I am annoyed when Google attempts to grab my search but - no problem; I visit on the web my favorite search engine,duckduckgo.com. I can currently do this on IE, on Edge, on Firefox, on Chrome, or on Samsung Internet. What if my internet service provider, however, tells me I can no longer use duckduckgo.com; that I must use Google, Bing, or whatever; that I would need to pay an exorbitant fee if I wanted to get a subscription elsewhere, in addition, in order to be able to use duckduckgo.com. Or what if none of the ISPs liked duckduckgo.com because it is less commercially oriented, and I am effectively blocked from using it?  (and it would necessarily die out, despite being a superior search engine?)

In addition, I can run IE, Chrome, Firefox and Edge all at the same time, and sometimes I do, multitasking with work and personal uses, accessing web tools from different places, simultaneously, because it is convenient to toggle several windows on my computer. There is no one holding me back, saying I can only access what they control. I am not at all confident that the loss of net neutrality will not force a radical and profound circumscription of what I am permitted to do or able to afford to due on the internet.

I can enter URLs as I like by my desktop keyboard and go almost anywhere on the web, virtually anywhere that is safe that is - I can go directly there. I never was a fan of AOL or any mediary service - I want to search outright and find what I can find. With net neutrality,  I can do this. Without net neutrality, I have little confidence that this freedom will remain.
  3. Another analogy. Some States have payroads - turnpikes on the Interstate highway system, not mine. But that is okay, I can drive State to State, using whatever public roads I like. But what if I had to subscribe to a transportation system. I could only use this subset of all of the roads, because I had a paid subscription; and not being wealthy, I can only afford one subscription. Maybe I will catch a superhighway here, but not there; a country road here, but not there. I can only drive on those roads as permitted by my provider.

We should all be wary that our full experience of the internet as we have known it for years will change drastically, in the direction of far less freedom than ever, to serve corporate profits, if the perpetually smiling and smugly superior Agit Pai's dream comes true.

Yes, the biggest tenant in Trump Tower has ended its lease, worth $580 million, after a public outcry denouncing Trump's racist defense of Nazis earlier this year.

This victory is in part thanks to you and tens of thousands of UltraViolet members who took swift action to demand Nike and Starbucks end their Trump Tower leases. With Nike out, that's one down, one more to go.

We can't let this momentum go to waste. While this news is still making rounds and Starbucks is paying attention, will you share the petition again to get Starbucks to end its lease in Trump Tower?

Here are the ways UltraViolet members made this victory possible:

  • In August, 73,000 UltraViolet members signed the petition: "Tell Nike and Starbucks: Reject Donald Trump and his embrace of white supremacists. End your leases at Trump Tower."
  • Nearly 1,000 UltraViolet members flooded Nike and Starbucks offices with calls for over three weeks.
  • You and other members made it possible to fly a plane over Nike's shareholder meeting in September. The plane banner read: "NIKE: STOP PAYING RENT TO RACIST TRUMP."

This is just another example of how taking action together can make even the biggest, seemingly immoveable establishments relent. Now, let's put pressure on Starbucks to move out of Trump Tower.

Noam Chomsky, though a linguist of enormous stature, is best known outside his original field for an intense, left-leaning political engagement that has entailed pointed criticism of US foreign policy and an abiding interest in nuclear weapons and other technology-based threats to human civilization. In this interview, Chomsky speaks with Bulletin senior editor Lucien Crowder about the Trump administration's policies on climate change, nuclear modernization, North Korea, and Iran – and about an intensification of "the extremely severe threats that all of us face."

Thanks for adding your voice to push back on Trump's disastrous plan to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

We have to do everything in our power to stop this— so we're urgently stepping things up!

We're working the phones now securing digital billboards in DC and beyond to take our message, that declaring Jerusalem the Israeli capital is an attack on Palestinian rights, directly to our nation's capital.

It costs just $30 to keep one mobile billboard on the street for 15 minutes— and that can mean hundreds, even thousands of people will see it. Can you chip in $30 to help get our message out?
  Yes, I'll donate $30 now to #TellTrumpNo!

P.S.: Here's our original email again:
------------------------------------------------------------

President Trump just declared that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and will move forward with plans to move the U.S. embassy there.

I have faith that one day, we'll be strong enough to bend U.S. foreign policy toward justice— but this is really going to test it.

Because this is a reckless, deeply irresponsible decision: for Palestinians, Israelis, and all of us. And it's on us to stand up.

Click here to tell your Congressperson: recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital is wrong.

In addition to the dangers this move poses for the region and geopolitical stability, it's just flat out wrong. What we need is a U.S. policy that recognizes and addresses the root causes of the ongoing crisis in Israel/Palestine, not one that drastically inflames already existing inequities. Because what's happening today is an expression of these larger truths:

  • That throughout the last 50 years of occupation, successive Israeli governments have stripped Palestinian Jerusalemites of residency rights, citizenship, and access to any type of democratic government. Just in 2016, Israeli authorities demolished or seized 1,093 Palestinian-owned structures1 in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and 2017 is on track to exceed that number.
  • That even for the state of Israel to be created in the first place, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes.
  • And that for decades, the U.S. has been a one-sided champion for the Israeli government, never an impartial, honest, or productive peace broker.

Trump's announcement today is especially an example of that final truth. It is a cynical— and ill-advised— chess move, one that overtly aligns the U.S. with an increasingly expansionist Israel, at the expense of Palestinian people's lives and rights, and without any regard for diplomacy.

Click here to tell your Congressperson: recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital is an attack on Palestinian rights, and dangerous for all the people of Jerusalem and Israel/Palestine. Please make a bold statement against it.

I don't want to sound alarmist, but I'm alarmed.

No country in the world has an embassy in Jerusalem today, because the international community doesn't recognize Israeli jurisdiction over the city. And there's near-global consensus that moving the Embassy is a very bad idea — from Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and other countries in the region, and from Germany, France, and the European Union, not to mention many senior U.S. State Department officials.

There's a reason the status of Jerusalem hasn't been determined yet— it's at the core of the struggle against permanent Israeli domination and Palestinian dispossession.
