"Hitler was democratically elected"

"Hitler was democratically elected"
 (1975- ) is something you hear, at least in the US, at least since the 1970s. Strictly speaking it is wrong: when Hitler ran for president of Germany in 1932, he lost. He only got 37% of the vote (compare that to Donald Trump's current 42%). But in a more general sense it is true: the rise of Hitler came through democratic means.

Bernie Sanders:

"A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important."

In 1932
there were four nationwide elections in Germany: two for the Reichstag (parliament) and two for president. By the end of it all, Hitler lost the presidential election to Paul von Hindenburg, 53% to 37%, but the Nazis, his party, won a plurality in parliament of 33%.

That 33% for the Nazis might not sound like muchbut it was way better than any other party. On top of that, the Nazis were the only party with broad support, from both Catholics and Protestants, rich and poor, young and old, men and women, town and country. They had strong support from business and the middle class. That made Hitler the natural choice to become chancellor (prime minister) to form a majority coalition.

So in January 1933, Hindenburg, as president, made Hitler chancellor. Those on the right had assured Hindenburg that they would be able to control Hitler: he needed them to have a majority in parliament. But in practice they were not able to control him.

Hitler moved on limiting civil rights almost right away, particularly rights of protest and free speech. Then, when a fire broke out at the Reichstag in February, he blamed the communists. He got enough people afraid of a communist uprising – unfounded fears as it turned out – that he got President Hindenburg to agree to an emergency decree: the Decree for the Protection of the People and the State. In the name of national security Hitler was able to silence the press and throw anyone he wanted in prison. He was now, in effect, dictator, and he never let go.

So is Trump like Hitler?

Like Trump
, Hitler:

·         played on people's fears and racism;

·         promised to make his country great again;

·         had little regard for civil rights;

·         presented himself as a strongman;

·         was dismissed as a clown who could be controlled.

Unlike Trump
, Hitler:

·         had a strong, united party behind him with broad national support;

·         faced no strong opposition party;

·         had already tried to overthrow the government (in Bavaria in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch);

·         had a master of propaganda (Joseph Goebbels).

Also, Germany in 1932 was in way worse shape than the US in 2016
: it had lost the First World War and was sunk in the Great Depression with high rates of unemployment and poverty. It was a far more desperate country.

Subject: Chairman Bernie Sanders

These three words make me almost giddy: Chairman Bernie Sanders.

As none other than GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan reminded us last week, if the Democrats win back control of the Senate, Bernie is in line to chair a major committee—most likely the powerful Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.1

That means he'd lead the Senate Democrats' agenda on those issues. Just think about Bernie taking charge to advance the public option, free college for working families, and expanding Medicare—issues that are now all part of the Democratic platform.2

But here's the sobering reality: As Hillary Clinton has gained ground in the polls, Democrats running for the Senate have lost ground.3 What's likely happening is known as "anticipatory balancing"—as Clinton's lead becomes clearer, moderate voters split their ticket as a check on her party's power.

That's why we need to get every progressive voter in states with tight Senate races—including millennials and Bernie voters—to the polls. MoveOn is running a massive get-out-the-vote operation—exactly the kind of voter turnout program that has proven to make a difference in close races.4

Will you chip in now to help Democrats win control of the Senate, so that Bernie becomes a powerful committee chairman?

A new poll from NBC and The Wall Street Journal finds that—by a 53%–to–40% margin—registered voters say they'd be more likely to support a Republican candidate for Congress who would be a "check and balance" to Clinton over a Democratic candidate who would help Clinton and Democrats pass their agenda.5

We've seen what happens when Republicans are in charge of Congress. They stop at nothing to obstruct the agenda of a Democratic president. They've done it with President Obama, and they have for more of the same planned for a President Hillary Clinton. Just this week, Senator John McCain said as much, declaring that no Clinton nominee for the Supreme Court would get Republican support.6

Democrats still have a 60% chance of winning the Senate, according to the latest forecast from The New York Times.7 But many of the most competitive races—as in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and New Hampshire—are exceedingly close.8

In these very close races, it's going to come down to turnout. We must do absolutely everything we can to get progressive voters to the polls. But Election Day is only 19 days away, and time is running out. Munsup, will you help out by chipping in to MoveOn now?

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, who's in line to become the Senate Democratic leader, confirmed this week that Bernie "will chair a significant committee if we win the majority."9

This is our chance to make Bernie the chair of a powerful Senate committee. And we definitely can do it—if we join together, right now, while there's still time to make a difference in the tightest Senate races.

Can you chip in?

Want to support MoveOn's work?
Senator Elizabeth Warren says, "I'm so enthusiastic about MoveOn's smart and targeted plan to hire a network of organizers in key battleground states to mobilize and train volunteers to knock on hundreds of thousands of doors. It's bold and ambitious—and exactly what is needed to help swing Senate races, resoundingly defeat Donald Trump, and give Democrats a fighting chance to take back the House." Will you chip in to help make it all possible?

Subject: I hosted. Will you?

I'm Edgar, a MoveOn member in Tucson, and I just hosted a get-out-the-vote canvass to make sure we hand Donald Trump a stinging defeat, and win back the Senate. Will you join me and host one in your town? Sign up here.

"Look for the guy in the gray floppy hat."

That's what I told everyone who signed up to come knock on doors at the canvass I hosted with MoveOn a few weeks ago. I set up in the park in front of a local public library in Tucson, put on my hat, and not only did people find me, but more of them showed up than had RSVP'd for the event!

I was blown away by how committed everyone was. One person who came to canvass was a gentleman in his 50s or 60s who had recently undergone chemotherapy for prostate cancer. At first I thought, "Why are you here? You should be home taking care of yourself!" But I realized how important this must be to him that he was pushing himself after being so sick. He must have been thinking about what kind of world we're going to leave for our children and grandchildren, and how we need to make a difference while we still can.

People like this man are ready to knock on doors, but they need folks like you to host canvasses for them to do it! Will you join me and host a MoveOn United Against Hate canvass to stop Donald Trump and help win back the Senate for Democrats? Sign up and a local organizer will get in touch to walk you through everything you'll need to know and help make your event a success.

Yes, I'm interested in hosting a canvass.

I can't host, but keep me posted on other volunteer opportunities.

I know there are a lot of things you could be doing with your Saturday or Sunday. But with only two weeks until the election—and the real opportunity to defeat Trump and take the Senate back from Republicans—I hope you'll join me in hosting a canvass with MoveOn's United Against Hate campaign. Even if you can't go out walking yourself, hosting is a powerful thing to do and a great way to provide others with opportunities to talk to the voters who need to hear from us.

The reason I love being part of MoveOn is that I can multiply what I do. So instead of just me knocking on doors for two hours by myself, I can host an event, and local MoveOn members show up. Instead of knocking on 40 doors myself, we can knock on 300 together! Working with MoveOn, my voice means more than it does otherwise. I came out of hosting a canvass feeling proud, knowing I had spent my day doing good for our country and community.

Sign up to join me and say you'll host a canvass.

P.S. Don't miss your last chance to host a canvass before the election—as someone who lives in Ohio, you've got a big role to play, so sign up today to help others get involved.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Senator Elizabeth Warren says, "You can bet Republicans are hoping that progressives won't get our act together. That we won't work our hearts out for Hillary Clinton. That we won't seize the opportunity that's right in front of us to stop Donald Trump's hatred and build a Trump-proof Democratic firewall in the Senate. That's why MoveOn's work is so darn critical right now, and it's why I'm so invested personally in MoveOn's election campaign. Let's all join forces with MoveOn and make it happen. Together."

I needed to make sure you saw this important message from earlier today. NOW is the time to seize this momentum, but we need your help!

Earlier Message:

Things are starting to swing our way! We have the momentum but we can't take anything for granted.

Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight projections give Democrats a strong chance of taking back the Senate -- by a seat or two.

We need to do better than that.

Will you chip in now to support our work in the Senate battlegrounds and make sure we elect a Democratic Senate majority?

We can win with as much as an EIGHT-SEAT Democratic majority (54-46), but the races in states like New Hampshire, Nevada, and Pennsylvania are still on the cusp.

And we need to make up serious ground against strong Republican incumbents in the close races in North Carolina and Florida.

Earlier message:

Simply put, even if Hillary Clinton is our next president, confirming the kinds of Supreme Court justices Americans desperately need to defend our Constitution and our rights will be impossible without the US Senate.

Having a GOP Senate Majority controlled by Mitch McConnell will also guarantee four more years of dysfunctional gridlock and shutdown on Capitol Hill.

That's not checks and balances. That's broken government.
And it's all thanks to the Republican Party's unprecedented extremism.

A miraculous Democratic wave that switches control of the House of Representatives would be historic. We've endorsed some of the best progressive House candidates and our work will potentially impact dozens of House races. But electing a progressive majority in the Senate is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.

And despite the assumption of many, Donald Trump's downfall has not yet translated into a major decline for Republican candidates down ballot.

Will you give now, to make sure we have the resources we need heading into the final two weeks of the election to TAKE BACK THE SENATE?

YES! I'm with you to take back the Senate and save the Supreme Court. Put my contribution to work NOW>>

From: Alex Lawson, Social Security Works
Subject: AARP's Social Security Scare Tactics

On the first day of the current Congress, Republicans passed a rule that mandated a 20% cut in Social Security Disability Insurance benefits unless legislation was passed that either cut retirees' benefits or raised taxes. This cynical attempt to pit retirees against people with disabilities failed, because we stood together and fought for our united Social Security system.

But in the wake of this attack on our earned benefits, a funny thing happened. AARP – the nation's largest senior organization – issued an award to GOP Speaker Paul Ryan for "fixing" a phony crisis he and the Republicans manufactured. That's right, the same Paul Ryan who has spent the last decade peddling plans to dismantle Social Security and Medicare as we know them. And with just over two weeks until Election Day, AARP is running misleading TV ads declaring that if nothing is done, "Social Security recipients could lose up to $10,000 a year."

AARP's outrageous misrepresentation of Social Security is insulting to the millions of seniors they claim to represent. Join Social Security Works in demanding that AARP rescind Paul Ryan's "Champion of the 50+" award and stop using right-wing scare tactics that could lead to damaging cuts to Social Security.

The reality is that Social Security has a $2.8 trillion surplus, can pay out 100% of benefits owed for nearly 2 decades, and over 75% of benefits after that. And all we need to do is ask the wealthy to pay their fair share and we can afford to expand benefits for millions of Americans. And this week's announcement that Social Security's Cost of Living Adjustment will be just 0.3% next year makes it obvious that Social Security benefits are too low!

AARP knows how popular Social Security is with the American people. And their fear mongering is threatening the progress we've made to change the conversation toward the expansion of our earned benefits.

Their scare tactics  used for decades by conservatives on Wall Street are meant to ram through unpopular cuts by scaring people into accepting worse than they should. And Paul Ryan isn't the only pro-cuts Republican that AARP has awarded. Senators Kelly Ayotte (NH) and Richard Burr (NC), along with Representative Todd Young, who is running for Senate in Indiana, have all received champion awards while locked in close Senate races.

Stand with Social Security Works and demand that AARP rescind Paul Ryan's "Champion of the 50+" award and take the right stand on Social Security.

We will not stand quietly by while our Social Security benefits are threatened by disingenuous right-wing talking points.
