Standing with Las Vegas

We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victims killed in the Las Vegas shooting on Sunday. During this time of mourning we stand in solidarity with the American people, authorities, and medical professionals working diligently to attend to the hundreds of victims injured in the attack. We wish them a full and speedy recovery. On Monday, European Council President Donald Tusk said, "Every killing of innocent people is an attack on us all. Europe mourns victims in #LasVegas."

Subject: We're taking on the NRA directly. Here's how.

In any other country, what happened in Las Vegas, NV, on Sunday and its aftermath would be unthinkable: a devastating gun massacre followed by zero legislative action. But here in the U.S., that's just how it is—because our politics are frozen by the perceived power of the NRA.

The key word: "perceived." Because Republican politicians see the NRA as ultra-powerful, they think that staying in power means always siding with the gun lobby—against public safety. So the only way to end this lethal political limbo is to show that the NRA is not a political blessing, but, in fact, a political curse.

We've got a massive opportunity to do this—to take on the NRA in its own backyard. On November 7, Virginia—the state where the NRA's headquarters are located—will elect a governor and state legislature. This is becoming, in part, a referendum on NRA's power and has the potential to transform the perception of the gun lobby's strength—especially important as we head into the 2018 elections.

MoveOn is ready to scale up our work in Virginia to the next level—if we have the resources. Can you chip in to help?  Donate

The GOP candidate for governor of Virginia, Ed Gillespie, has an "A" from the NRA and says that it's "too soon" to discuss policy change after the Las Vegas shootings. By contrast, the Democratic candidate, Ralph Northam, has an "F" from the NRA and argues that "we do not need assault weapons on our streets."1

Gun safety will be a critical issue in the House of Delegate races, too. As The Washington Post reported, "[g]un violence roils Virginia election"—the NRA is already on its heels, delaying a huge planned ad campaign by a week.2

This is it. We've got just 33 days to puncture the myth of NRA invulnerability in Virginia. Can you help?  Donate

With your support, here's what MoveOn will do:

  • Mega-volunteer mobilization through our new custom-built, volunteer-driven text message mobilization tool. Not only can we get volunteers out in the streets, we can start testing tactics that will be central to our 2018 efforts.
  • Viral gun-safety videos on social media. The video that we posted two nights ago—featuring a gun-owning MoveOn member urging gun safety laws—has already notched a million views. We'll pay to get those videos in front of every person who needs a reminder of what's at stake. We'll also use these videos to test their impact and fine-tune our micro-targeting.
  • Media advocacy to make our message clear: In print and on TV, we'll make sure that the Virginia election serves, in part, as a referendum on the NRA's power.

If Democrats win big in Virginia, Republicans nationwide will see the wave building—accelerating a growing wave of GOP retirements and giving us our best shot at taking the House (and perhaps even the Senate) in 2018. We'll make progressive policies possible in Virginia and nationwide. And we'll show that an unapologetic anti-gun-violence position can help win elections.

Can you support this critical work?  Donate

In the United States of America, power should flow from people voting at the ballot box, not a shadowy special interest group committed to undermining public safety. The horror in Las Vegas should not paralyze us, but propel us to action. Let's stand up to fight for a country in which no one has to live in fear and where our democracy is worthy of its people.

Emergency petition: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now.

Sunday night in Las Vegas, a lone gunman rained gunfire down on a country music concert, killing 59 people and sending more than 500 to the hospital. It was one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.1

Republicans in Congress – who have fought for years to block any legislation that would protect Americans from gun violence – were quick to offer their “thoughts and prayers” in response. But thoughts and prayers are not enough to keep weapons of war out of dangerous hands and begin to address our country’s horrific gun violence epidemic.

It is time for Republicans in Congress to join Democrats in standing up to the National Rifle Association and pass commonsense gun control laws that will save American lives.

Tell Republicans in Congress: Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need gun control now. Click here to sign the petition.

Sunday’s shooting is far from an isolated incident. According to Newsweek’s John Haltiwanger, there have now been “273 mass shootings and over 11,000 deaths from gun violence in America” in 2017 alone.2

But instead of working to protect Americans from the gun violence epidemic, Republicans in Congress are planning to vote as soon as this week on two bills that would make Americans even more vulnerable to gun violence:

  • The SHARE Act (H.R. 3668), which would repeal restrictions on gun silencers and make it harder to detect the source of gunfire during mass shootings.3
  • The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38), which would undermine state efforts to protect residents from gun violence by forcing states to recognize concealed carry permits issued by any other state, no matter how lax the state’s permitting standards are.4

We must forcefully demand that Congress reject both of these dangerous pieces of legislation and take immediate action to ban weapons of war, including assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Please add your name to our emergency petition now.

Stephen Paddock, the suspect in the Las Vegas shooting, reportedly had at least 23 guns in the hotel room he used as a sniper perch.6 There’s simply no good reason for a private citizen to have access to that many weapons of war, but it should not come as a surprise.

Nevada has some of the weakest gun control laws in the United States. There are no limits on the number of guns an individual can own, and assault weapons are legal in the state as long as they are registered.5 The combination of weak state and federal gun laws made such a horrific attack possible.

There’s one reason why Congress consistently fails to take real action on gun violence: the National Rifle Association.
The NRA has a chokehold on Congress that keeps most bills about gun control from even coming to the floor for a vote. Politicians beholden to – or afraid of – the NRA are willing to turn their backs on their constituents when it comes time to implement reasonable limits and controls on guns. But you can count on them for a “heartbroken” tweet about their “thoughts and prayers” when a tragic shooting makes the national news.

Finally breaking the NRA’s chokehold on Congress will require massive grassroots pressure on our elected officials, demanding that they deliver more than thoughts and prayers in the face of our epidemic of gun violence.

After last November’s election, we expressed our concern about unique threats posed by the new administration to core institutions of our democracy and to academic freedom. In the months since, we have seen these threats begin to unfold.

Faculty members are being targeted and harassed, the freedom to join together on the job is in jeopardy, and producers of independent thought and knowledge, including faculty, scientists, and journalists, are threatened. The academic year has begun with a spate of racist incidents on campus, another travel ban aimed primarily at Muslims, the decision to end the DACA program that grants residency to many of our students, and, just last Thursday, a decision by the Supreme Court to take up a case that could strip workers in unions of rights.

We believe that democracy thrives on dissent, critical inquiry, free speech, and free research. And that means that we must do more than witness these events; we must resist them.

That’s why we invite you to check out our One Faculty, One Resistance campaign.

The AAUP is the voice of the profession. As such, we've been speaking up for academic freedom for more than 100 years. And in these troubled times, we’re doing it with renewed urgency and vigor.

We’ve created a central space for our campaigns and materials related to these threats-- materials to help you fight against targeted harassment of faculty and for the right to teach and conduct research freely, and to resist political interference and litmus tests in higher education.

Subject: UPDATE: Abortion ban PASSED

Yesterday, instead of working to help Puerto Rico or address the Las Vegas tragedy, the House of Representatives passed a 20-week abortion ban. We need to start our campaign NOW to stop the ban in the Senate. Will you chip in?

House of Representatives has scheduled a vote TODAY to ban abortion after 20 weeks nationwide.

That's right. Less than 48 hours after the tragic shooting in Las Vegas and with Puerto Rico still in ruins, this is what Trump and the anti-choice Republicans in Congress have been up to.

Worse yet, the bill is so extreme that abortion providers who help women in the most desperate health situations will face up to five years in prison.1 But with anti-choice Republicans in charge of both houses of Congress and Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, this abortion ban could actually become law--unless we mobilize the kind of public outcry that stopped Trumpcare.

UltraViolet is launching an emergency push to stop this awful bill from getting to Trump's desk. Will you chip in $5?

Under the 20-week ban, women facing the most tragic and difficult circumstances threatening their health, future ability to have children, and other risks will suddenly be unable to access the care they need. Women often discover fatal fetal anomalies and other complications after 20 weeks. But instead of women making decisions about their own bodies, Trump will be deciding for them.

And you have to ask, with all the problems facing us from Puerto Rico to Las Vegas, why are Republicans pushing an abortion ban now? To appease their far right base, which is livid over their failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

To fight back, we need to organize a rapid response effort to flood Congress with phone calls and generate the kind of widespread media coverage that put so much pressure on Republicans to back away from Trumpcare.

But we don't have much time, and already three Democrats in the Senate have come out in favor of the ban. So we'll need to fight tooth and nail to keep the bill off the president's desk. Will you chip in $5?  Yes, I'll chip in $5 to help stop the 20-week abortion ban.

Republican leadership is once again trying to distract from their inability to govern by attacking who they see as an easy target: women.

House Republicans just passed a BAN on abortions after 20 weeks! The bill is an unconstitutional attack on women's health, reproductive freedom, and even our basic equality ... part of the Right's ongoing campaign grant “personhood” to fetuses at the expense of women's fundamental rights.

We don't have any time to waste and must move quickly to STOP this abortion ban in the Senate! Will you join me?

Please sign the petition demanding your senators stop the 20-week abortion ban>>

The anti-choice Right's disregard for women's lives is disturbing, and it's up to all of us to do everything we can to stop these ideologues' efforts to control women's bodies.

This bill -- championed by Arizona Representative Trent Franks and sponsored by a group of 170 representatives which includes only 12 women -- doesn't just ban abortion at 20 weeks. It also introduces criminal penalties for doctors who perform these abortions -- signaling to doctors that they could go to prison for doing their jobs.

Please join PFAW and me in standing up to the right-wing, mostly male politicians who don't understand the realities of women's lives and want to run roughshod over our fundamental rights.

Don’t let Roger Goodell and the NFL owners co-opt and whitewash this racial justice movement.

Tell the NFL: Support the players’ platform for racial equality and Unity Month

The whitewashing and erasing of the national anthem movement began in earnest this week. While we saw many players take emotional stands for racial justice, many teams, owners, and media outlets began to erase Colin Kaepernick and racial justice from this protest movement in favor of vague statements about “unity.”

From Roger Goodell’s weak rebuke of Trump’s comments, to owners Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder, and Shahid Khan using the protests as a photo-op, to Sports Illustrated erasing Kaepernick by leaving him off their athlete activism cover, to teams like the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints being pressured into standing for the anthem, it’s clear that those in charge want to avoid the much-needed conversation regarding police brutality and racial justice.1 2 3 4

With these efforts to erase the core message behind the anthem protests, and the ongoing blackballing of Kaepernick, it’s critical that we reaffirm what these protest are about and not let the league off the hook. They are about ending police brutality and racial justice. And the league has been given a concrete plan by their own players for how to engage and use their considerable resources to make a difference in the fight against police brutality and racial injustice. It’s time for the NFL to move past words and meaningless displays of “unity” and support the Support Players’ Platform for Racial Equality and Criminal Justice Reform.

Black NFL players peacefully protested racial inequality, Trump called them “sons of bitches.”

Tell the NFL: Support the players’ platform for racial equality and Unity Month

Take Action!

Once again, 45 has proven that Black people are nothing more than property to him. In response, athletes and individuals around the league and our country united to fight back. Now, we’re calling on owners to reject Trump’s words by doing more than linking arms with players but actually working to protect their safety, rights, and freedoms both on and off the field.

Tell the NFL: Support Player's Platform & Plan for Racial Equality

On Friday night in Alabama, Donald Trump reaffirmed his disdain for Black people by referring to any NFL player who peacefully protests racial inequality during the pregame national anthem as a “son of a bitch” who should be forced off the field. During his rambling speech, Trump also took the time to criticize the NFL for implementing rules to promote player safety because those efforts impact his personal entertainment. This came about a week after Trump went after sports journalist Jemele Hill and tried to publicly strongarm ESPN into firing her for comments made on her personal social media.

Perhaps he was feeling emboldened by NFL buddies like Dan Snyder (Washington), Shad Khan (Jaguars), Bob McNair (Texans), Robert Kraft (Patriots), Woody Johnson (Jets) and Stan Kroenke (Rams), all of whom each contributed $1 Million to his inauguration. Kraft even gave him a Super Bowl ring. Or perhaps he had the consent of the league itself, as their marketing department contributed $100,000. Either way, Trump feels way too comfortable demanding the NFL be nothing more than a league of modern day gladiators whose sole purpose is to destroy their bodies for entertainment. Now it’s time for Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL owners to choose which side they’re on.

The NFL can’t have it both ways: either support the people who are the reason the league exists or continue to cower to a bigot.

Earlier this year, a group of players and a former player, Malcolm Jenkins, Michael Bennett, Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin, met with Goodell and NFL officers to discuss the Player's Coalition's activism in their local communities. They delivered a recently publicized memo calling on the NFL to declare November a month of social activism to advance racial justice causes, including criminal justice reform, to elevate the issue in the same way the NFL does with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The request is detailed and includes an ask for owners and league officials to attend player-led visits to local prisons and meetings with formerly incarcerated people and their family. It also makes clear that the request is not for permission but financial support and genuine collaboration.

Demand the NFL listen to players and designate November an official month for racial justice activism.

After Trump’s Friday night tirade, several NFL owners rushed to release statements condemning his words.5 But we need action- not more words. To this day Colin Kaepernick remains blackballed by league owners, despite public acknowledgment from elite quarterbacks around the league from Cam Newton to Tom Brady that Kaepernick is more talented that numerous QBs who have jobs today. Equivocation and calls for unity from the league are no longer acceptable.

Now that several NFL owners claim to support of their players’ rights, it is time for Commissioner Goodell to declare November a “month of unity.” NFL rosters are 70% black, and the league owes it to its players to recognize the heroes who have stood up to racial intolerance in America.6 Soccer leagues around the world are working to stand up to racism;7 it is past time for the NFL to do the same. As DeMaurice Smith, the president of the players’ union, said on Saturday, “We will never back down. We no longer can afford to stick to sports.”8

Columbus, OH—Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, introduced the Local Food and Regional Market Supply (FARMS) Act (HR 3941) yesterday. This legislation directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to continue positive investments in local food systems, community economic development, and public health.

Ohio Ecological Food and Farming Association (OEFFA) Policy Coordinator Amalie Lipstreu, released the following statement:

“The bill introduced by Senator Brown makes important investments that will allow farmers to reach new markets; increase community access to fresh, healthy, local food; and support the food infrastructure that connects producers to buyers. With commodity prices falling, farmers are increasingly looking for new opportunities and for some that means investments close to home where markets for locally and regionally produced food continue to rise.

Even with the growing demand for food produced in Ohio, some farmers struggle because they don’t have access to the infrastructure they need. It could be storage, transportation, or processing that limits the growth of markets that enrich farmers and local communities. Ohio is home to many thriving cities, rural communities, and farmland. By connecting the dots we can create wealth and health and move toward greater sustainability.”
