Subject: NEWS RELEASE -- PEACE DAYTON
PEACE DAYton, the Regional month-long celebration of the United Nations sponsored International Day of Peace, has grown to include 80 local organizations hosting over 30 events from September 7th to the 27th at multiple venues. For a detailed schedule, go to: www.peacedayton.org
International Day of Peace, officially designated by the General Assembly IN 1984, is celebrated globally on September 21st of each year. The Dayton Regional celebration has grown to include over 30 events during the month of September, with the official kickoff at the Peace Heroes Walk on Riverscape on September 11th.
The Peace Day's theme for 2016, chosen by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, is "Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace." The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at the historic summit of the world's leaders in New York in September 2015. The new ambitious 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years. It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
The Peace Dayton Collaborative Group is an association of over 80 organizations throughout the Dayton Region. Individuals and organizational participants in the Group mount an impressive array of events during September designed to the needs of their specific members. Peace Dayton's vision is to encourage and highlight each organization's year-long efforts to build a more peaceful community for the Dayton Region's children and families.
Peace is defined by the Group as the consensus values of increased safety, prosperity, and quality of life. All sectors of the Dayton community participate, including the arts and healthcare, governments and faith-based institutions, education and commerce, safety and security, sports and recreation, as ell as the service and environmental groups.

Sunday, September 11, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm
House tours at 1 pm; light refreshments follow.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is dedicated to the achievements of American workers. It is a tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
During the second Sunday of September our literary circle will share poetry and short stories influenced by the benefits of labor.
"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence." Martin Luther King Jr.
"My grandfather once told me there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to be in the first group; there was much less competition." Indira Gandhi
"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius
Join us on Sunday, September 11th, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, as we share poetry and short stories about the meaning of labor, Labor Day and our connection to it at our Dunbar Literary Circle. Come read a passage from your favorite poet or writer or simply listen and enjoy the recitation from others.

This summer dozens of local young people have been learning peace literacy through programs offered by the Dayton International Peace Museum and NCCJ of Greater Dayton. These new generation peace leaders will be among a cross-section of hundreds of walkers who will commemorate the 15th year since the 9-11 attacks by honoring role models who offer positive ideals that help make our community stronger. We will celebrate the important work of our very own first responder's - Police Officers , Firemen and Emergency Medical Services.
More than 75 teams -representing service organizations, faith communities, and nonprofit organizations-preregistered for the event. Of these teams, at least 16 are walking in honor or memory of area citizens who are role models for living peaceably.
Presented by the 21st Century Peace Literacy Foundation (www.21cplf.org) in collaboration with nearly a dozen local nonprofits and corporate sponsors, the event will promote peace literacy education as an antidote to the epidemic of violence in our communities. According to the former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, "The environment of violence in our nation is a top public health priority."

Celebrating 'International Youth Day' with state representative Fred Strahorn:
Fighting back to keep 10,000 youth summer jobs
In 1999 the United Nations General Assembly declared August 12th 'International Youth Day'. The 2016 theme is "The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production".
The West Dayton Youth Task Force will celebrate International Youth Day by hosting State Representative Fred Strahorn at an open community meeting to discuss how a decision to defund the summer youth job program statewide can be overturned.
As of right now, the funding for the Montgomery County Youth Works summer program is gone.
Come out and let your State Representative know that you care about this issue and won't go away quietly.

DAYTON CHAPTER OF HADASSAH ANNOUNCES
'RESEARCH IN SERVICE TO HUMANITY' MEETING
Dr. Douglas Kniss, OSU Biomedical Research to be Keynote Speaker
Hadassah (The Women's Zionist Organization of America), has introduced its new educational program, 'Research in Service to Humanity'. Twenty years ago, when stem cell therapy was highly regulated in the United States (as late as 2006) and other countries, it was well underway in Hadassah Medical Organization's labs. Stem cells have changed the medical equation. Human embryonic stem cells have the potential to turn into any kind of cell in the body—brain, heart, lung, retina, bone marrow—and infinitely multiply. Adult stem cells live all over our bodies; their function is to repair local damage. Using human embryonic stem cells, HMO scientists have halted the deterioration of the retina in laboratory models; using patients' own stem cells, they have inhibited the progression of ALS in human clinical trials. Treatments or cures for diseases like age-related macular degeneration ALS, MS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes could be a reality in the foreseeable future.
Dr. Douglas Kniss, Ohio State - Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Biomedical Engineering, will be our keynote speaker. In addition to his work at OSU, he has been the university's expert in stem cell research policy at the Ohio Statehouse for more than a decade. He has testified before the Ohio House and Senate and has spoken to many concerned citizens' groups on stem cell research policy in our state. We look forward to meeting him and learning from him.
The program:
Beth Jacob Synagogue; 7020 N Main Street Dayton, OH 45415

DAYTON METRO LIBRARY PROGRAMS
ADDRESS HEROIN EPIDEMIC
Huber Heights and Miami Township Branch Libraries
Drug overdose deaths in Montgomery County have increased 104% from 2010 to 2015. 92% of the overdose deaths involved an opioid. Dayton recently ranked worst among cities with over 400,000 people for drug overdoses, with Cincinnati and Toledo also in the top 10. In light of these statistics, the Dayton Metro Library presents two free programs in September focused on opioid abuse prevention, intervention and support. "Heroin addiction and opioid abuse clearly affects countless families in the Dayton area, but there are organizations that can help," said Jennifer Spillman, chair of Programming Committee at the Dayton Metro Library. "These Library programs are timely, and offer insights and support to people who need it most."

Subject: A fundraiser in support of Ted Strickland
Along with electing Hillary Clinton as President, it's equally critical to win back a Democratic majority in the US Senate, which can protect the future of the Supreme Court. It's why we're hosting a fundraiser for Ted and you're invited!
Sunday, September 25th @ 12:00PM - 3:00PM
Our home in Beavercreek, Ohio.
Rob Portman has doubled down on his endorsement of Donald Trump, in spite of the toxic statement's he's made, shown in the cartoon below. You are invited to fill in future statements as time goes on.
We have two objectives for the fundraiser:
1. Raise money for Strickland's campaign, and
2. To create an opportunity for voters to meet with and talk to Governor Strickland
We invite all to attend. Second we invite all (who are inclined) to contribute to his campaign. We are looking for a number of sponsors who will contribute $500 to $1000 or more. And we are asking for others to contribute as disposed - but please come and take advantage of this opportunity to help elect Ted Strickland to represent us in the US Senate.
