U.S. Will Station New Nuclear Weapons In Germany Against Russia

By Eric Zuesse

Germany's ZDF public television network headlines on Tuesday September 22nd, "New U.S. Atomic Weapons to Be Stationed in Germany," and reports that the U.S. will bring into Germany 20 new nuclear bombs, each being four times the destructive power of the one that was used on Hiroshima. Hans Kristensen, the Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, says, "With the new bombs the boundaries blur between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons."

Subject: What's your question for the presidential candidates?

If you were on stage with Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb, and Lincoln Chafee Tuesday night for the first Democratic debate of the 2016 presidential primary, what would you ask them?

Click here to submit the question that you'd ask the Democratic candidates—and we'll share some of them with debate host CNN, reporters and pundits covering the debate, and the public before Tuesday's debate.

And, as the primary heats up, our team is working on more ways to make sure the candidates are directly and specifically addressing the issues most important to the 8 million-member MoveOn community.

If you were one of the tens of millions of Americans who tuned in to the multiple debates Republicans have held so far, you know that there was barely a mention—if any at all—of the issues that really matter to most Americans—protecting and expanding Social Security, getting big money out of politics, being able to drive to work without being taken into police custody or to go to school without fear of someone wielding a gun, addressing climate change, and more.

Let's make sure the Democratic debates don't go the same way.

Submit your question now.

Looking for some inspiration? Here are some of the questions MoveOn members have already submitted:

How will you defend and expand Social Security?—Donna, San Francisco, CA
What are you going to do to help People of Color achieve equality in America?—Tammarra, Mesa, AZ
What are your planned initiatives regarding climate change re: standing up to big business and oil companies?—Autumn, Sabael, NY

What makes a good debate question? One that suggests what you think the right thing is, one that demands a clear answer. And, especially, questions that you don't think CNN will already ask if they didn't hear from us.

MoveOn is a massive, powerful community of 8 million members—with 8 million opinions! What makes us powerful and beautiful is that we share commitments across a range of critical issues—and we expect that anyone who wants to be president will speak to our shared priorities.

Click here to submit your question for the Democratic presidential candidates now.

As Charleston pays family of Walter Scott $6.5 million, true justice is as elusive as ever

by Shaun King

Officer Michael Slager executing Walter Scott
Walter Scott shot and killed in cold blood by Officer Michael Slager

We've seen this before. In its largest police brutality settlement ever, the city of North Charleston paid the family of Walter Scott $6.5 million because of his wrongful death at the hands of Officer Michael Slager. Aside from discussing how the cost of a life is calculated, we've seen this before.

The family of Freddie Gray just settled for $6.4 million.

The family of Eric Garner just settled for $5.9 million.

Rekia Boyd: $4.5 million.

Laquan McDonald: $5 million.

Jonathan Ferrell: $2.5 million.

This list could have thousands of names on it.

New York City alone has paid billions of dollars in settlements for police brutality, and Chicago is not far behind.

Wanna know the one consistent theme in all of those cases?

Not one officer was found guilty of a crime. Not one.

How could it be that billions of dollars are spent in an admission that wrongdoing took place, but nobody is ever held truly responsible for that wrongdoing?

Even the officers who fired 41 shots at Amadou Diallo were found not guilty. The city paid millions for it, but the officers all got off.

It's simply not enough for these families who are destroyed by police brutality to receive huge taxpayer-funded settlements. Officers and departments must be held truly accountable for their actions.

This isn't justice. These are payoffs.

You might have read about Shell's recent abandonment of plans to drill for oil off the coast of Alaska. A big part of that move was that investors simply dried up.

Fossil fuel divestment and clean energy investment is a rapidly growing movement. In just the last few weeks, high-profile celebrity activists like Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio have divested. And various institutions and leaders have pledged to move their money -- over $2.6 trillion and counting -- out of fossil fuels and into clean energy solutions.

Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York is even now taking steps to begin moving the pension fund investments of America's largest city out of dirty fossil fuels and into clean energy.
