Coco's February Sunday Brunches
to Benefit Stivers

by Alexis Larsen, contributing writer for Dayton.com <http://dayton.com>

For eight of the last 10 years, the Coco's Bistro in Dayton has put on
"Savor your Sunday" brunches benefiting Stivers School for the Arts in
February. The special brunch dates are a way to celebrate art, food,
education, community and the opportunity to give back.

The popular brunches sell-out quickly bringing in 150-200 people per
brunch, for a total of about 800 meals served. Getting a reservation in
early is key. The cost is $30 per person with $15 donated back to Stivers.
Meals include a fruit and cinnamon pita chip starter, a choice of one dish
on the menu and live entertainment from a different Stivers group of
musicians. Visual art students also get involved with a large painting on
display based on the Fernand Leger painting, "Les Trois Musiciens."

It's a special opportunity to dine for a good cause - Coco's does offer
brunch on special occasions like Mother's Day and Easter, but it's the only
time during the year to be able to enjoy brunch at Coco's on any kind of a
schedule.

Subject: Funding Needed!!!

Unity in the Valley is looking to bring a series of "workshop"
opportunities to Dayton, approximately quarterly, over the next two years. I
would love to have a broad Multi-faith/Multi-organizational Alliance help
fund this endeavor which seeks to highlight the dimensions of institutional
racism and implicit biases that perpetuate negative interactions in our
community. The total amount needed to present the entire program offerings
will be approximately $18,000 - $20,000 over the remainder of 2016 and all
of 2017. I will be happy to provide the overview documents describing each
component as mentioned, but omitted, in the previous posting of this
opportunity - just send me an email request at
unityindiversity_2015_Dayton@yahoo.com
<mailto:unityindiversity_2015_Dayton@yahoo.com>

As it has been proven that many things that are free are often not valued
or regarded as worthwhile, I suggest asking participants to pay between $10
and $15 (or possibly "free-will offerings") to basically cover the costs of
the food that is to be served during each event. Some events will be a few
hours to a half day, while others are weekend or 4 Sunday afternoons or 5
weekday evenings as best fit the needs of the community where it is to be
held.

If, once you have reviewed the attachments, you believe in the value of
these community-building and race unity workshops, please send the
attachments out to your business owner, organizational, as well as members
of the faith community, with your recommendation that they contribute to
this endeavor as I hope you will yourselves.

I also look forward to your input and would be happy to meet in person and
I can also be reached by phone at 937-274-7009.

Antonin Scalia

scalia

Antonin Scalia
(1936-2016) was, until this past weekend, the longest-serving judge on the US Supreme Court, the highest court in the land. He was also its most outspoken and, along with Bobbsey Twin Clarence Thomas, arguably its most right-wing. He was appointed by President Reagan in 1986, becoming the first Italian American on the court and the 101st White man.

His death leaves the Court divided four to four between liberals and conservatives. That gives President Obama the golden opportunity to make it a liberal court. But he will have to get his appointment through the Republican-controlled Senate in an election year!

Scalia was against:

·         1964 Civil Rights Act,

·         1965 Voting Rights Act,

·         affirmative action,

·         school desegregation,

·         same-sex marriage,

·         equal rights for women,

·         abortion.

Etc.

In Shelby County v Holder (2013) he helped to gut the Voting Rights Act, saying it was unfair to Whites.

In Citizens United v FEC (2010) he allowed the rich to, in effect, buy elections in the name of "free speech".

He helped to send Troy Davis to his death, even though there was no physical evidence and most witnesses had taken back their testimony. Sending possibly innocent (Black) men to their death was no big deal:

"This Court has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant who has had a full and fair trial but is later able to convince a habeas court that he is 'actually' innocent."

He also helped to send Gary Graham to his death, also probably innocent.

Scalia was a big believer in capital punishment, pointing to the case ofHenry McCollum, found guilty of raping and killing an 11-year-old girl, calling a "quiet death by lethal injection" an "enviable" fate. But McCollum, like Davis, was found guilty based on coerced testimony and no physical evidence. Twenty years after Scalia refused to hear his case, DNA evidence proved that McCollum was innocent.

Scalia was an "originalist", meaning he read the US Constitution according to the original intent of those who wrote it: rich White men who lived in the 1780s, many of them slave owners.

But that was just intellectual window dressing to make his stone-cold racism and sexism and homophobia and classism look respectable. When it came to, say, the Fourteenth Amendment, which was clearly intended give Black people equal protection under the law, he suddenly became a "textualist", going strictly by the letter of the law, not the original intent.

His racism became crystal clear in the affirmative action case Fisher v University of Texas (2013), where he said:

"… there are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school a slower-track school where they do well I'm just not impressed by the fact the University of Texas may have fewer [Blacks]. Maybe it ought to have fewer."

Scalia died this past weekend
in his sleep after a day of hunting. He was 79.

Within
hours of Justice Antonin Scalia's passing, top Republicans announced plans to block ANY of President Obama's nominees for the Supreme Court. They think we should wait until after the election for the next president to choose who fills Scalia's seat.1

Can
you imagine Donald Trump or Ted Cruz picking the next justice? The idea is positively terrifying--to say nothing of the thought that landmark abortion and birth control cases will be decided this spring without President Obama's nominee on the court.2 President Obama needs to be able to do his job and appoint a replacement. The stakes are too high for anything else.

Republicans
are watching to see how the country reacts to their declaration. Before their ideas take hold, we need to speak out loudly, and show them in no uncertain terms that the only acceptable way forward is for them to do their jobs and consider the current president's nominee.

Tell the Senate: Don't block President Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

One
of the most important jobs the president has is appointing Supreme Court justices. The Senate's job is to be consulted and to approve or reject--not summarily refuse to even consider the nominee.

But here we are, with Republicans categorically rejecting any nominee, before Obama even announces his pick. They're gambling that one of their far-right, anti-woman candidates will win the presidential election in November. Want a sense of what that means? Trump's already on the record saying he thinks Bill Pryor, who called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination in constitutional law in history," is someone worth considering for the Supreme Court.3

President
Obama has pledged to move forward quickly, and he is going to need our help to get his nominee through the Senate. The first step is getting Republicans to back off their high horse and do their jobs to approve a new justice.

Dave,
I believe you are around 50. What percent of what you earn goes to pay for NHS protection for you, your wife and your children who are still at home?

Lewis,
You never worked in the exceptional USA but have been snow-birding in the Lower Rio Grande Valley since you retired from your job with the Canadian Armed Forces. I know your Canadian coverage will cover you for a few days while you snowbird but you have to buy American Health Insurance to cover you until spring arrives and you go back to Canada. So I would like your thoughts also.

Dave,

How lucky can you get?

1 British Pound equals 1.45 US Dollar.

You pay £50 per week for NHS provided healthcare. Translated to US dollars, that is $72.50 per week that you have to pay for good health care. Expanding that to a month, that extrapolates to a couple of dollars more than $300.00 a month that you are paying for NHS health care in US dollars.

I do not know if you have kids or not so we will assume you do not so we are comparing apples to apples.   (You and wife to me and wife)

In the USA, Medicare Part B (pays doctors) costs $104.90 if you were already drawing Social Security like me because there was no COLA (No cost of living adjustment because Obama had no inflation) thanks to the hold blameless clause.   But the people who are just becoming eligible to join Medicare are stuck for $121.80 a month not $104.90.

To what people pay for Part B coverage have to be added Medicare Part D (prescription) premiums and Medigap insurance premiums.   I don't know what each of those things cost but I can guarantee you, they ain't cheap.

I am a retired federal employee so I have FEHBP, the same as US Senators and US Congressmen.   I have Federal Employee BC/BS (Self plus one) which costs me $501.17 a month.   That provides better coverage than Medicare Part D plus Medigap but I strongly suspect that what I have is not nearly as good as what you have.   You are paying a little over $300.00 a month for better coverage than my wife and I are paying $700.00 a month to get.   Now do you understand why I began this message with how lucky can you get.

I am forwarding this message to others I am trying to educate about the benefits of "Single Payer" over "Obamacare."   I will pull your e-mail address when I forward.

I have never met your dad but we have become good friends over the Internet.   My sister lives in El Paso.   The next time your dad goes to Las Cruces to visit friends; I will fly to El Paso so I can have a beer or two with your dad.   I will even take some $2.00 bills to pay for them.

Ask your dad about the $2.00 bill thing.

Please add your name to this rapidly growing petition hosted by PFAW and our allies. Time is running out to stop the witch hunt!!

Tell Speaker Ryan to END the Planned Parenthood witch hunt!

Remember the Planned Parenthood "sting videos?" How could you forget? The smear campaign triggered a tidal wave of state bills to defund the important healthcare provider and a bevy of investigations and congressional hearings that all found no wrongdoing.

Well, a grand jury in Texas investigating the matter also just exonerated Planned Parenthood.

And that's not all.

The grand jury concluded that the anti-choice extremists attempting to smear Planned Parenthood acted fraudulently, and indicted them for, among other things, trying to purchase fetal tissue -- the crime for which they were attempting to frame Planned Parenthood!

But there's still a special committee in the House to "investigate" Planned Parenthood. Its entire existence is based on the campaign and videos that have been flatly and repeatedly discredited.

It's past time for Speaker Paul Ryan to disband the special committee. He needs to stop dragging Planned Parenthood's name through the mud and stop wasting taxpayer dollars on this wild goose chase.

From: Anna, Justin K. Ann, Stephen, and the rest of the team; MoveOn.org Civic Action
Subject: Tell the Senate: Do your job

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away yesterday. President Obama offered his condolences to Justice Scalia's family, ordered flags to be flown at half-mast, and pledged to do his job and nominate a new justice for consideration by the Senate.1,2

Republicans wasted no time in turning to partisan politics. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell announced that "this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President."3 Hours later, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said that President Obama shouldn't get to appoint the next justice.4 And this morning, Senator Ted Cruz vowed to filibuster any Obama nominee.5

We can't let Republicans keep a Supreme Court seat vacant for more than a year due to purely partisan obstructionism. Let's make sure Republican senators do their job as defined in the Constitution: to advise and consent to the president's nominee.

Click here to sign this petition to the Senate: Do your constitutional duty.
Pledge to give President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court a timely vote.

Republicans may think it'll be good election year theater to refuse to consider President Obama's nominee. But the more signatures on our petition, the louder our message: It is critical to fill this vacancy—and anyone who abdicates their constitutional duty will be haunted by their choice through November and beyond.

When this rapid-response petition crosses 50,000 signatures, MoveOn will publicize it in Washington, D.C. and in the home state of any senator who is abdicating his or her responsibility by fighting for a prolonged and destructive vacancy on the court. Will you add your name and send your senators this message now?

From a woman's right to choose, to the ability of workers to organize, to how America can combat climate change, to efforts to craft a humane immigration policy, the Supreme Court is facing pressing topics that directly affect the lives of countless Americans. Leaving a seat empty would reduce the court's ability to decide these matters, create costly uncertainty, and be a direct attack on one of the three branches of American government.

Many justices have been confirmed in election years before, including as recently as in 1988, when Senator McConnell and many other Republican senators voted to confirm Justice Anthony Kennedy.6

Tell your senators and Senator McConnell: It's up to you to do your job as defined by the Constitution.
As soon as President Obama announces a nominee, advise, consent, and move forward.
