Subject: Re: Antisemitism

The spread of antisemitism in this country is real, and terrifying.

Neo-Nazis march down America’s main streets. The president calls them “very fine people,” and retweets conspiracy theorists claiming Jews control the world’s finances. White supremacists have growing platforms in mainstream media and receive humanizing profiles in The New York Times.

But who is most likely to be labeled antisemitic? Advocates for Palestinian human rights like you.

Enough.

Real antisemites like Steve Bannon have joined forces with right-wing Zionist groups like the Zionist Organization of America to forge a toxic political force: Zionist antisemitism.

The only way to fight oppression is to fight all oppression— that’s what real intersectionality means. That’s why we fight for Palestinian human rights, and why we don’t see a contradiction between fighting antisemitism and fighting devastating Israeli policies. That’s what JVP is all about. If you agree, donate what you can now.

We’re ramping up right now.

Tonight, we’re hosting a major event in New York with Rebecca Vilkomerson, Linda Sarsour, Lina Morales, Leo Ferguson, and Amy Goodman, to push back against the rise of real antisemitism and the escalating war on the movement for equality and justice.

We’re bringing hundreds of people together all over the country to discuss our book On Antisemitism and share their fears, experiences, and questions. Because people are feeling real hurt as they grapple with what it means to be targeted as a Jew in Trump’s America, and simultaneously silenced and attacked as antisemitic for supporting Palestinian rights.

AND we’re supporting powerful activism on college campuses with the #ReturnTheBirthright campaign, and leading the charge against Kenneth Marcus, a Trump Education Department nominee who fought to defund college departments he thinks are too critical of Israel.

The truth is JVP is one of the only groups in the U.S. actively proving every day that you can care about both Jews and Palestinians. Your donations give us crucial independence to keep up that fight. Chip in what you can now.

We’ll never leave the fight against antisemitism to those who seek to cynically exploit very real and well-founded fears of anti-Jewish prejudice in order to advance their own oppressive agendas. JVP is proud of our Jewishness AND proud of our support of Palestinians, and with your help we can keep fighting for equality for all people, everywhere.

American Indian activists marked Thanksgiving with a National Day of Mourning for Native Americans by occupying Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, the alleged landing spot of the Pilgrims’ arrival in Massachusetts colony.

Led by Wamsutta Frank James, an Aquinnah Wampanoag elder and music teacher, over 200 Indians seized the Mayflower II and painted Plymouth Rock red.

James had refused to speak at a state dinner the night before commemorating the 350th anniversary of the landing, and went on to organize United American Indians of New England.

Subject: Sign the petition opposing Trump’s birth control rules

Last month, the Trump administration issued new rules that allow employers, health insurance providers, and universities that claim a religious or moral objection to drop coverage for birth control.

The Trump administration’s decision to limit contraceptive coverage robs women of the ability to control their lives and futures. We aren’t letting it go unchallenged.

While the new rules went into effect immediately, the Department of Health and Human Services is required to take public comments into consideration until December 5th before making the rules permanent.

Sign the petition to tell the Trump administration: Don’t allow employers and universities
to deny their employees and students insurance coverage for birth control.

ADD YOUR NAME

The right to birth control is only meaningful if it’s affordable. These new rules are unacceptable, discriminatory, and unconstitutional -- and we’re working our hardest to block them using every tool we have.

We filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop these rules in court. We worked with members of Congress to introduce a bill that would reverse the rules. And now, we’re asking you to urge the administration directly to rethink these harmful policies.

Speak out. Sign and add your official comment to the Department of Health and Human Services now
to oppose the Trump administration rules limiting insurance coverage for birth control.

Subject: Fewer Guns. Period.

Guns Down is not like other gun violence prevention organizations. In the era of Trump and a pro-gun Congress that’s in bed with the NRA, we’re not pretending that our opponents want to find a compromise.

Instead, Guns Down says it like it is: The only way to end gun violence is fewer guns!

So, this Giving Tuesday, support the organization that’s taking the fight directly to our opponents. Make a donation of $50 or more to Guns Down and tell the NRA, Trump, and gun extremists everywhere that you’re not backing down or letting their “guns everywhere” agenda win.

Fight back by giving to Guns Down

We’re a small team, dedicated to giving our country a safer future by making sure that future includes fewer guns. We count on the support of people like you, all across the country, who are demanding a change. With your help, we’ve started to make that change a reality.

This year, we’ve taken on the gun lobby’s agenda head-on. Together, we’ve called out their corporate allies, fought their Carry Guard “murder insurance,” and stood up to the gun lobby’s dangerous lies in the media. We have big plans to continue the fight in the works for next year too.

But for our work to have the greatest impact, and for the greatest reach, we’ll need your help. Click here and contribute to Guns Down today.

From: Don Hazen, Executive Editor & Jan Frel, Editor-at-Large, AlterNet
Subject: Google Is Making It Much Harder to Stop Trump

We're going to need your help.

This fall we wrote to you and told the disconcerting story of how new threats to democracy were undermining independent, progressive media.

The painful reality is that at the same time Trump and the right wing are wreaking mind-boggling destruction on our society, Google and Facebook, giant monopolies that we all use every day, have become a serious threat to journalism and democracy. This makes it more difficult to challenge Trump at his biggest weak point—that he and his administration can say whatever they want, demonize whomever they want, and expect that the corporate media will let him get away with almost all of it.

In June, Google, under the guise of fighting fake news, and addressing the worries of corporate advertisers, implemented an algorithm change, called Project Owl. It seemed like a good idea. Fighting fake news, often a tool of Trump is a top priority for us.

But we and other progressive sites quickly discovered that Project Owl, while trying to eliminate fake news, screwed us by dramatically reducing the visibility of our content. And we had seen a sharp drop off in traffic from Facebook as well.

How We Were Hurt

The new algorithm reduced our Google search traffic by 40%. The changes at Facebook had a dramatic effect as well. Suddenly every month 2 million fewer people were reading AlterNet stories, and millions more across the internet were not accessing progressive content.

We are suddenly facing the reality that independent, progressive news sites have become inconvenient to the bottom line of the Google and Facebook duopoly.

The impact of Project Owl has been to invisibly censor independent news, while at the same time boosting the standing of a group of mainstream print and broadcast outlets that have collaborated with these platforms to "solve" the fake news crisis.

The Good News

Faced with this crisis, we appealed to you, our community. The response was fantastic with financial contributions and support. As a result, we have stabilized our short-term advertising revenue for now.

But we still need reader support to meet our budget for the year. Can you help?

And unfortunately, the larger duopoly information problem still exists. We have to dedicate ourselves to a long-term fight. AlterNet is missing 2 million monthly readers that we have had for years. Other sites like Salon, Democracy Now, Media Matters and many more have had significant traffic drops. And it all will probably get worse.

What are we doing about the duopoly problem?

AlterNet feels that the long-term future of independent media is at risk. Progressive media is a crucial element in fighting back and stopping a total right wing and corporate take over. Tech giants have a firm grip over the information channels and we must aggressively resist their attempts to marginalize our voices.

Please, can you help us with this struggle?

We all need to fight back. Working with the Media Consortium, in January, we plan to bring together the independent media sector to better understand the issues and prepare to fight back.

  • We call on Google to rescind the algorithm changes made under Project Owl and instead to consider adopting a more transparent method of determining fake news.
  • We call on the public, the FTC, and Congress, to consider regulating Facebook and Google as monopoly platforms for the distribution of content.

What About Trump and the Right Wing?

Despite the monopoly challenges, AlterNet is fiercely fighting the Trump agenda every day, 24/7. White Supremacy, toxic masculinity, anti-science, anti-immigrant, anti-democratic—these are all essential elements of the horrendous Trump administration and the rabid right-wingers in Congress

Despite our traffic loss, every month AlterNet still has one of the biggest audiences online, and we are developing a strategy to build an audience outside of the tech monopoly’s control. We need your support to continue to provide all of our readers with the reporting and analysis that we need to fight back and make it through the crisis we face as a news organization and our democracy at large.

P.S.: Don’t forget, your contribution today is 100% tax-deductible!

Subject: We’re asking you to do something big

Last week, the Nebraska Public Service Commission granted the final permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, paving the way for construction to start as soon as this spring. But the fight to stop Keystone XL is not over, and we intend to continue fighting until plans for this zombie pipeline are scrapped for good.

Indigenous leaders, our friends at 350.org and other pipeline fighters have organized the Promise to Protect, a pledge to travel to the pipeline route and engage in peaceful, creative resistance if needed to stop the pipeline from being built. More than 8,000 people have already signed on. Can you join them?

Click here to learn more and sign up to join the Promise to Protect.

Joining the Promise to Protect is a big commitment. To sign up, you must be willing to commit to traveling to the Keystone XL pipeline route when called upon by frontline leaders, participate in a training in advance and be fully committed to peacefully and nonviolently resisting the pipeline.

Pipeline fighters have been told repeatedly over the years that the Keystone XL pipeline could not be stopped. Time after time, we have fought back and stopped the pipeline from being built. Now we need to do it once more.

TransCanada, the company behind Keystone XL, has said that it will decide as soon as December whether to move forward with construction. It is up to us to make it clear to TransCanada that the resistance to Keystone XL is stronger and more committed than ever.

Please read the email below from Bill McKibben to learn more. Then, if you’re able to commit to peacefully and creatively resisting Keystone XL, click here to join the Promise to Protect.

Thanks for everything you do.

--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

State authorities in Nebraska just issued a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline – but along a different path than the original route TransCanada wanted. We’re still determining exactly what this re-route means, but we know one thing for sure: this pipeline will not be built.

Trump has tried everything to get this dirty tar sands pipeline built - but this announcement, though complicated, appears to be a setback that creates more hurdles TransCanada will have to jump through – so many that it might be too difficult for the company to move forward.

If they do move forward, they’ll be met with enormous resistance led by Indigenous peoples on the route of the pipeline - and we’re asking you to commit to standing with them. We’re answering the call of our Indigenous allies along the route to continue to oppose this project, and we need you engaged.

Join the Promise to Protect and commit to traveling to the pipeline route to engage in peaceful creative resistance when called upon by frontline leaders.

Together with Indigenous leaders, ranchers, and farmers, we’ll make a series of nonviolent but resolute stands along the proposed pipeline route in opposition to a project that endangers our communities, land, water and climate.

TransCanada said they’ll decide by December whether or not to move forward, and if we can show enough resistance with thousands of people ready to stand up - we’ll perhaps influence this decision.1

Add your name and Promise to Protect the people and water under threat in the path of Keystone XL.

All of us remember the inspiring beauty and power of the Standing Rock encampment a year ago. But we also remember the violent crackdown from authorities and the pipeline company in response. That’s why we will:

  1. Ask everyone to sign up in advance
  2. Require that everyone participate in a training beforehand
  3. Announce that this will be peaceful and nonviolent, at least on our end
  4. Respect the leadership of Indigenous peoples, farmers, and ranchers on the route

Once you sign up, we’ll be working with our Indigenous and frontline partners on the ground to determine the most strategic plan and timeline. We’ll keep you updated about dates and trainings once we know if and when TransCanada moves forward. In the meantime, our partners in Nebraska will use every legal option available to stop the pipeline, and continue to build renewables directly in the route.

We don’t know if we can hold the line on KXL forever, but then again we took on this fight in the summer of 2011 confident we’d lose. We knew we had to fight anyway, and so far we’ve succeeded, keeping 800,000 barrels of earth’s dirtiest oil in the ground day after day, year after year.

This fight has always been bigger than one pipeline. The movement that’s risen since this journey began is stronger than ever - and now every proposed fossil fuel project across the country is being challenged like never before. Now, it will take everyone’s help to stop Keystone, and all the dirty energy projects that threaten our communities and climate.

So on we go--and thank you so much for being part of this big broad movement and this long and beautiful fight for the future.

TransCanada to make final decision on Keystone XL by December - Reuters

Subject: Senate vote on GOP tax bill IMMINENT (and it could get even WORSE)

Senate Republicans are trying to ram through their tax scam bill with a vote as soon as Thursday!

If the Senate passes any version of the GOP tax scam, working families are going to suffer… millions of people will lose health care … and Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will be on the chopping block!

VOTE IMMINENT: Sign now to send a message to your senators to OPPOSE this bill>>

Even if you’ve already taken action, add your name again -- an email message will be sent to your senators … and they need to hear from everyone!

Several Republican senators have expressed deep reservations about supporting the current bill, but amendments are being proposed and Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and their allies are still wheeling and dealing, trying to get every Republican they can on board.

And Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) is now trying to slip repeal of the Johnson Amendment into the Senate version of the tax bill as a means to sway conservative senators like him who might be on the fence. The Johnson Amendment is a critical barrier between church and state and protects against a new flood of money in politics.

Already in the House-passed version of the tax bill, if the Senate passes its version and it includes repeal of the Johnson Amendment, then what is already a massive redistribution of wealth from the middle class to corporations and those at the very top will also become a severe assault on democracy and the separation of church and state!

We need to kill the bill, with all of its awful provisions and any that Republicans might add at the last minute. And NOW is our chance.

Add your name to demand that your senators OPPOSE the tax bill>>

From: Senator Bernie Sanders
Subject: Stop this immoral disaster

Throughout my political career, I have asked us all to imagine what our nation's future could be: a country with a minimum wage that is a living wage; with students graduating college without crushing debt that stifles their ability to pursue their dreams; where health care is recognized as a right for every man, woman, and child; and where we lead other nations in the fight against climate change.

I have asked us to believe that we could level the playing field and create a vibrant democracy where the billionaire class would no longer be able to buy and sell our candidates and elections.

I will always believe in that vision of America—even as I watch Republicans try to pass a tax scam that is literally the opposite agenda of what you and I have championed over the years.

As they continue to fight for more tax giveaways for their wealthy Wall Street donors, less health care for ordinary Americans, and more debt for college students, we must stand up, fight back, and make our voices heard.

That's why I'm hitting the road—with MoveOn and other partners—to share the message that we must reject this outrageous corporate giveaway. Instead, we need to invest in our communities and build an economy that works for all of us, not just the one percent.

Together, we're bringing this progressive agenda—which is supported by the vast majority of American voters—to Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania next weekend, with big rallies to push members of Congress to reject this tax scam.

Will you chip in $10 to help MoveOn, as we go on the road to stop the destructive, obscene, and immoral GOP budget and tax plan?

Over the summer, I went on the road with MoveOn to help defeat the Republican "health care" bill that would have thrown as many as 32 million Americans off of the health insurance that they currently have.

And I'm going on the road again because we have to defeat this bill, too—a tax bill that will slash taxes for the rich, raise taxes on working families, and lay the groundwork for a massive attack on the most vulnerable people in our country.

This bill is an immoral disaster. If it passes, 13 million fewer Americans will be insured, and health care premiums will surge for tens of millions more. Further, the Republican budget cuts Medicaid by $1 trillion over 10 years and Medicare by over $400 billion. In order to give huge tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations, the Republican budget also makes enormous cuts to education, nutrition, affordable housing, and transportation—and will crush college students and college graduates struggling with debt.

In short: This budget will do incalculable harm to tens of millions of working families, women, kids, the sick, the elderly, and the poor. We have to fight this budget and stop it. That's why I'm hitting the road with MoveOn, and why I'm asking you to support the work that we're doing.

Can you chip in and join the fight with me? Donate

Now is exactly the time to demand the agenda that we fought so hard for.

Together, we must build a progressive grassroots movement across this country that not only defeats this disastrous legislation, but which leads the struggle to create an economy and government that work for all of us, not just the one percent.

Instead of cutting taxes on the wealthy, let's increase them—and use that money to pay for universal health care and free tuition at public colleges and universities. Let's raise the minimum wage to a living wage—$15 an hour—lead the world in combating climate change, transform our broken criminal justice system, and pass comprehensive immigration reform.

This is your agenda. This is my agenda. This is the MoveOn agenda. And we need to fight for it—and against the GOP's efforts to undermine it. Munsup, I need to know if you are still with me in this fight. Donate

Want to support our work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back towards sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your support, now more than ever. Will you stand with MoveOn? . Donate

Let’s Make One More Phone Call

Ok, maybe two

We are about to set a record for the number of co-sponsors of our bill in the Ohio House. We currently have 17 co-sponsors:

Nickie Antonio, Dan Ramos, Dave Leland, Michele Lepore-Hagan, Janine Boyd, John Patterson, Stephanie Howse, Thomas West, Adam Miller, Glenn Holmes, Tavia Galonski, Emilia Strong-Sykes, Jack Cera, Catherine Ingram, Brigid Kelly, Mike Sheehy, and Alicia Reece.

If you haven’t already, call their offices and tell them thank you. You can find contact information here.

Now, what about setting a record? Let’s make this year the one with the most co-sponsors ever! Can we get 3 more? How about 5? Do I hear 10? If your representative hasn’t signed on yet, make that first call. Again, contact information can be found here.

The Second Call

Rob Portman is again in need of your counsel. Call his office and tell him strongly that he needs to vote no on the tax bill. It is estimated that in order to fund the tax cuts for the already wealthy, it will be necessary to cut $25 billion from Medicare. This is not acceptable. You can call Rob at the following numbers:

Subject: Re: HUGE loss for Trump tax giveaway

The list of Republican senators expressing doubts about Trump's giant tax scam keeps growing, with conservatives Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, and James Lankford now on the fence.1 Will you chip in $5 to help keep the pressure on?

We're. So. Close.

First, Senator Ron Johnson, an arch-conservative from Wisconsin, came out against the Republican Party's misguided plan to cut taxes for the wealthy and sabotage Obamacare.2 Then, 13 Republicans voted against the House tax bill.

Now, Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski seem to be leaning our way, and a new analysis shows the Senate tax plan will actually RAISE taxes on the poor and the middle class--a huge political blow to the bill's chances.3,4

If Sens. Collins, Murkowski, and Johnson vote no, the bill is dead. That's why we're making Senate phones ring off the hook in Washington, D.C., and organizing our members in key states to tell their stories about what this tax DEFORM plan would mean for them.

Will you chip in $5 to UltraViolet Action to help kill the Trump tax giveaway?

Desperate for a win, Senator Mitch McConnell and Trump are pushing to pass their rich-person giveaway when they come back after Thanksgiving. That means we've got just one week to raise hell in Maine, Arizona, Nevada, and Alaska--the same kind of organizing that helped us kill Trumpcare earlier this year.

But just like this summer, we have to keep the pressure on senators from these states. We've got the cold hard facts: 13 million will lose their health insurance.5 Americans earning less than $75,000 a year will see their taxes INCREASE.6

We have to back up those facts with the stories of real people, real voters, who can't afford for this dangerous tax plan to become law.

And we certainly won't be silent about who would benefit from this tax bill: the super-rich. Trump, the Mercers, the Kochs--these are the special interests who'll get even richer off the backs of the poor and the sick if the Senate tax plan becomes law.

Yes, I'll chip in $5 to UltraViolet Action.

Eighty-nine American Indians seized Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, offering to buy the island from the federal government for $24 worth of beads (the alleged price paid to the Canarsee Delaware Indians for Manhattan Island; it was actually 60 Dutch guilders).

Their numbers swelled into the at times hundreds; the General Services Administration, which had responsibility for the site of the former federal prison, and Coast Guard gave them the opportunity to leave the island peacefully.

They were reclaiming it as Indian land by right of discovery, and demanding fairness and respect for native peoples.

The occupation lasted for more than a year. Said Richard Oakes, a Mohawk from New York, "We hold The Rock."

By CECILIA KANG

A rollback of net neutrality regulations would represent a significant victory for companies like AT&T and Comcast and would amount to a strike against consumers.

PRESS RELEASE

NAACP OPPOSES FCC PLAN TO REPEAL NET NEUTRALITY

NOVEMBER 21, 2017

Baltimore, MD (November 21, 2017) – The NAACP, the nation’s premier civil rights organization, staunchly opposes the Federal Communication Commission’s plans to eliminate critical safeguards ensuring an accessible internet.

Under the Obama administration, the country made essential steps towards protecting net neutrality, but the FCC’s new proposal announced by Chairman Ajit Pai calls for a set of repeals that would dismantle that progress. The plan would roll back the regulations implemented in 2015 and effectively exempt high-speed broadband internet service from the prohibition against unreasonable discrimination in Title II of the Communications Act. In sum, the plan ignores the importance of high-speed internet service to the well-being and advancement of the nation and puts the interests of wealthy corporations far above American citizens.

“The NAACP resolutely supports an open internet and opposes the FCC’s new plan,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO. “The internet is fundamental to economic opportunity, social action, and innovation in the modern age. It has the power to democratize information, it allows us to communicate instantly and effectively, and in recent years, it has facilitated innovation and been the catalyst for social justice movements. Throughout our 108 year history, the NAACP has fought against discrimination and for justice and equal opportunity for all. We see the fight for net neutrality as an extension of that mission.”

The FCC’s commissioners will vote to formally approve the plan on December 14. The NAACP calls upon the FCC leadership – and the telecom companies whom the plan would effect – to understand net neutrality as a social justice issue and respect the regulations already in place.

I've just released a new video, and I hope that you'll click here and take a moment to watch it.

Robert Reich: Five Reasons to Support MoveOn

This video is a little bit different from the videos that I normally make—this video is actually about MoveOn.

I wanted to make a video about MoveOn because I've been a proud MoveOn member for many years, and I'm also proud to have partnered with them on videos and other projects.

MoveOn's work has a huge impact. And as we battle a trillion-dollar redistribution of wealth to the rich, we need MoveOn now more than ever.

Click here to watch my new video, "Five reasons why I support MoveOn," and learn how you can keep MoveOn strong in the months and years ahead.

We'll need MoveOn—as part of a powerful, broad-based social movement—to stop the immoral, shameful, and disastrous tax giveaway to corporations and the ultra wealthy that was just passed in the House, to protect the Affordable Care Act from going into a death spiral, to save 800,000 Dreamers from deportation, to continue pushing for investigations and the impeachment of Donald Trump, and to run an all-hands-on-deck campaign to get our country back on track in 2018.

Click here to watch my latest video, "Five reasons why I support MoveOn," and find out how you can help MoveOn continue its critical work.

Want to support MoveOn's work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your ongoing support, now more than ever. Will you stand with us?

Subject: Live from Times Square: IMPEACH DONALD TRUMP

If you happened to be walking around Times Square today, like countless Americans do every day, you may have noticed something:

A brand new Need To Impeach digital billboard, featuring a map and a running count of the 2.5 million Americans (and growing by the second!) who have already signed our petition to impeach Donald Trump.

We launched this billboard in Times Square for a simple reason: The American people, Congress, and President Trump himself need to see the nationwide strength of our movement.

So we're making a splash that millions of people will see -- and we hope you'll share it far and wide, so folks who aren't walking around Times Square can see it, too.

Donald Trump continues to taunt rogue nuclear powers, attempt to cut taxes for wealthy corporations, and undermine our nation's healthcare system. He's a clear and present danger to the United States.

Enough is enough. Americans across the country are declaring that this president is unfit for office and must be removed.
