April 4, 2017 is the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.

Groups around the country will be staging public readings of Dr. King's Vietnam speech. In confronting the deeply rooted racism, militarism, and materialism of the United States, Dr. King described the United States as the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.

Dr. King's historical speech was a turning point in the growth of the peace movement and the struggle to end the war in Vietnam. Today we are involved in new wars with no end in sight.

On Tuesday April 4th we are holding a public reading of Dr. King's speech to recognize his role in helping to end the war in Vietnam and to call for an end to our current wars.

Please join us.

We are looking for people to read sections of Dr. King's speech (attached).

Commemorating the Season for Nonviolence
&
MLK's "Beyond Vietnam" Speech

On April 4, 1967, in his "Beyond Vietnam" speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of:

"A nation . . . approaching spiritual death"
"Our only hope [being] . . . our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit . . ."
"[Shifting] from a 'thing-oriented' society to a 'person-oriented' society [in order to conquer] the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism."

On April 4, 2017, the 50th anniversary of that speech and the date we close the 2017 Season for Nonviolence, we in the Dayton area meet to honor our wise, peace-promoting forebears and to dialogue about:

How we can work together to heal our nation's spirit—beginning with our own community
How we can support each other in recapturing the revolutionary spirit that emboldened our ancestors
Practical steps we in Dayton can take as we strive to become less racist, less materialistic, and less militaristic

APRIL IN PARIS EVENT SUPPORTS ESSENTIAL SERVICES

This spring marks the 43rd year for a group of dedicated volunteers to honor the work of Womanline in our community at a Luncheon and Fashion Show. The Republican majority in the Ohio legislature is again trying to derail the state's progress on renewable energy. House Bill 114 would kill Ohio's renewable energy rules, ending any incentive for utility companies to invest in wind or solar energy.

The bill's sponsor is trying to push the bill through as quickly as possible and win enough votes to override a veto from the governor. To stop H.B. 114, we need to make sure that Ohio legislators know their constituents won't accept any move to reverse the transition to clean energy.

Tell Ohio legislators: Don't gut Ohio's renewable energy rules. Oppose H.B. 114.

H.B. 114 would reverse the popular bipartisan 2008 law that created Ohio's renewable energy and energy efficiency standards. Under that law, utilities companies in Ohio must offer renewable energy as a percentage of the power they sell to customers – 12.5 percent by 2026. If H.B. 114 passes, there will be no enforceable clean energy requirements at all. The bill would also weaken energy efficiency standards and allow large commercial customers to ignore energy efficiency rules.1

Even Republican Gov. John Kasich opposes the bill,2 but the House leadership hopes to pass the bill with a two-thirds majority that could override the governor. The bill represents the legislature's fifth attempt to gut the state's renewable energy rules, including a three-year freeze on the rules that passed in 2014. 3 This time, legislators say they may succeed with a permanent repeal.

Tell Ohio legislators: Don't gut Ohio's renewable energy rules. Oppose H.B. 114.

Ohio has a growing clean energy economy that could completely flounder if the state reverses course. According to one renewable energy expert who testified during the bill's hearing, Ohio could lose $10 billion in market opportunities of if the bill passes.4 Today, Ohio has more wind factories than any other state, and wind power has already generated nearly 3,000 jobs and $900 million in wind project investment in Ohio.5

As the editorial board of the Plain Dealer noted, "Is it any wonder that among the groups testifying in favor of HB 114 have been the Ohio Coal Association and the American Petroleum Institute of Ohio?"6

With the help of their friends in the legislature, fossil fuel and utility companies are threatening Ohio's economy, climate, and public health. We can't allow them to endanger our future.

Tell Congress: Support the Presidential Tax Transparency Act

Donald Trump wants people to forget about his taxes. He is hoping people will forget about his close ties to Russia and ignore how he is using the presidency to line his own pockets. We can't let that happen.

Fierce pressure on Congress humiliated Trump and left Paul Ryan helpless to push their radical anti-health Trumpcare bill. Now, constantly hammering on Trump's web of corruption will drive a wedge between Trump and many of the voters who thought he would "drain the swamp." One of the best ways to do that right now is to get behind Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden's Presidential Tax Transparency Act, which would make it mandatory for presidential candidates to release tax returns – and force every member of Congress to take a stand on Trump's taxes.

Trump is trying to skirt bribery laws by kicking off his 2020 campaign this year, which is earlier than any president has before.1 But Trump cannot have it both ways – now as president and as a candidate, we can up the pressure on him to release his taxes.

Tell Congress: Support the Presidential Tax Transparency Act. Click here to sign the petition.

We're joining with our friends at Americans for Tax Fairness and other allies in the progressive community to get Congress to force Trump to release his tax returns. Sen. Ron Wyden's bill would require all candidates and sitting presidents to release their last three years of tax returns or the Federal Election Commission would do it for them.
2 Republicans who oppose this bill are simply putting partisan loyalties ahead of allowing Americans to make informed decisions. Trump's taxes are the window to his entire web of swampy corruption:

  • Foreign entanglements. Trump's debt load increased from $350 to $630 million in 2016, when American banks were reluctant to extend Trump credit.3 In 2008, Trump's son Donald Jr. is claimed to have said "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia."4 Without a look at his tax returns, the American public cannot know whether Trump's current debt or his previous business partnerships obligate him financially to Russian oligarchs aligned with Vladimir Putin.
  • Tax dodging. The American people who pay their taxes deserve to know if Trump has refused to pay his fair share. Trump has said he is "smart" not to pay taxes – and the campaign has not denied The New York Times reports that he dodged taxes.5
  • Fitness for the presidency. A government watchdog filed a lawsuit just days after the inauguration claiming that Trump is in violation of the Constitution because any payments to Trump from foreign entities violates the anti-bribery "emoluments" clause of the Constitution.6 A president using his power to enrich himself while indebted to foreign governments is not normal, and we cannot let Congress and the corporate media pretend it is.

By demanding that Congress act, we can keep the spotlight on Trump's outrageous stonewalling, force Republicans to pick between loyalty to party and country, and lay down a principle for all candidates in future elections.

Tell Congress: Support the Presidential Tax Transparency Act. Click here to sign the petition.

Americans need to get the truth about Trump's business dealings, his claims of extreme wealth, how he truly makes his money, what tax loopholes he is using to dodge taxes and the tax rate he actually pays. As Congress starts considering massive tax cuts for corporations and Wall Street billionaires, the American people deserve to know how much Trump stands to personally profit from Republican tax plans.

We need to put the spotlight on the way Trump is potentially using government to enrich himself and his well-heeled friends and make sure Trump's greed doesn't put our security and safety at risk.

Subject: #HijabisHoopToo

We told you that sixteen-year-old student-athlete, Je'Nan Hayes was banned from her varsity basketball team's championship game because she was wearing a hijab--even though she played in all 24 games throughout the season. And you responded--over 40,000 of you signed the petition asking the National Federation of State High School Associations to lift their hijab ban. But the NFHS hasn't responded. They've continued business as usual--leaving a rule in place that marginalizes Muslim student-athletes.

That's why we're stepping it up and asking you to #StandWithJenan. Call the NFHS before their board meeting next week and tell them to lift the hijab ban now.

Here's the original email:

Tech firms must take a stand against Trump's Muslim registry.
Tell the NFSHSA to stop targeting Muslim teenagers now!

They stopped 16-year-old Je'Nan Hayes from playing in the championship basketball game because she was wearing a hijab.

Tell the NFSHSA to stop targeting Muslim teenagers.

Make sure no other child has to endure this humiliation because of her faith.

Take action

They banned her from playing in the championship game because she was wearing a hijab.

Sixteen-year-old, Je'Nan Hayes
had spent months perfecting her basketball game--unrelentingly practicing dribbling and shooting every day with her beloved team mates after school. As a practicing Muslim, she wore a hijab every single day--but that didn't stop her from playing in 24 games throughout the season. That was set to change on the day of the big championship game. The anticipation was high, with the shouts of proud parents and the smell of gym shoes and popcorn in the air. As Je'Nan stood for the National Anthem, her excitement grew--this was the moment she had been waiting for all season. The moment all of her hard work would pay off. But as the game started, Je'Nan never got off the bench. There she sat--watching as every single member of her team got to participate in the championship game. Her spirits sank lower as she watched her team suffer a defeat--but nothing prepared her for her coach pulling her aside after the game and gently breaking the news as Je'Nan sobbed: the referee wouldn't let her play in the game because she wore a hijab even though she'd played in every game that season.1

Tell the National Federation of State High School Associations to lift the ban on hijabs now!

The referee was enacting an anti-Muslim rule in the National Federation of State High School Associations' handbook which outlaws religious headwear unless the player has a signed waiver from the state. But in a country built on the principles of religious freedom, it's outrageous that there's a rule that inherently singles out Muslim teenagers and other religious minorities--why should they need permission to wear garb that is essential to the practice of their faith?  Especially because there has never been a recorded incident of a hijab being a safety hazard during a basketball game. And even the state governing body is backing Je'Nan up, stating that she should have been allowed to play in the game. But as long as the rule exists, it leaves Muslim students open to irregular enforcement by referees who may or may not be anti-Muslim. No child should be denied the fruits of their labor due to religious practice. That's why it's time for the National Federation of State High School Associations to stop targeting Muslim teenagers and lift the ban on hijabs and other religious headwear now.

Tell the National Federation of State High School Associations to stop targeting Muslims and other religious minorities and lift the ban on hijabs now!

The NFHS targeting Muslim teenagers shouldn't be taken lightly--it's a policy that's simply stoking the flames of anti-Muslim bigotry that have reached a terrifying height since Donald Trump was elected. Since his election, hate crimes have already risen to a level not seen since 9/11.2 And the Trump administration has already tried to implement two Muslim bans--halting immigration, and even tourism from Black and Brown Muslims. The National Federation of State High School Associations must lift the ban on hijabs now.

No more anti-Muslim bigotry. Tell the National Federation of State High School Associations to lift the ban on hijabs.

Now, more than ever, governing bodies like the NFHS that claim to advocate for all student-athletes, must responsibly wield the enormous power they hold. As they are the supervisory organization over high school athletics, the National Federation of State High School Associations can either normalize--or stigmatize students of marginalized religions, countries of origin, and ethnicities. They must take this responsibility seriously and create an equitable playing environment for all student-athletes. Tell them to lift the ban on hijabs now, so no more students have to endure what Je'Nan Hayes did: putting in all of the hard work to win a championship, only to have her dreams ripped away from her--just because she's Muslim.

Tell the National Federation of State High School Associations to lift the ban on hijabs now!

Subject: A Climate of Fear for Adjunct Faculty

70.4%.

That's the latest AAUP data on the percentage of faculty jobs that are contingent. It's a trend that over the past forty years has only gone in one direction: up.

Related to contingency are a host of issues -- a lack of due process that protects academic freedom, exploitative pay and working conditions, and, frequently, no provisions for participation in the governance of institutions of higher education.

This week, the AAUP released a report on the investigation of the case of Nathanial Bork, an adjunct faculty member dismissed from the Community College of Aurora (CCA) in the fall semester of 2016.

Read the report now.

Bork's case offers unvarnished insight into the conditions of contingency. He was summarily dismissed after six years of teaching philosophy and related courses--with positive reviews. The administration alleged that he was dismissed because he had failed to adequately implement a curriculum redesign mandated by CCA. But Bork, an active advocate for adjunct rights, alerted the AAUP, because he believed his dismissal was in fact due to his having written a report to the Higher Learning Commission about what he saw as CCA's efforts to raise course completion rates by lowering standards. Specifically, he asserted that CCA had modified certain entry-level liberal arts courses, like the courses he taught, in an effort to improve their pass rates.

Our investigation found strong evidence to suggest that by dismissing Bork the administration "violated basic tenets of academic freedom, as set forth in the 1940 Statement of Principles and derivative AAUP policy documents." The report further noted that at CCA, the academic freedom of adjunct faculty members "is not universally guaranteed as a matter of institutional policy but selectively bestowed as a function of administrative benevolence."

The result? The loss of true academic freedom: As the proportion of the faculty employed in adjunct and other contingent positions grows, protections for academic freedom dwindle. Through our chapters and our national organization, the AAUP will continue to advocate for rights and protections that should be afforded to all faculty, tenured or not.

Subject: FW: Health Care Repeal defeated for now

On Friday, March 24, 2017, the so-called "American Health Care Act" (AHCA) was officially pulled from consideration by the Congress, thus handing a defeat to those who called for the repeal the Affordable Care Act  (a.k.a. "the ACA," or "Obamacare").  The AHCA, which was touted as the "repeal and replace" bill would have decimated health care coverage, returning many of us to where we were before the enactment of the ACA, or worse.  By pulling the bill from consideration the proposal is now dead for the foreseeable future.  As Speaker Ryan said in his post-mortem press conference, "Obamacare (the ACA) is the law of the land."  He has since vowed to continue to attempt to repeal and replace the ACA.

For more information on the legislation, it's defeat, and what it may mean to you, please see this Issue Update.
